Q: What is the process for marriage in the Adventist Church? In the Catholic Church one must have a church ceremony (not just a civil service) in order for the marriage to be considered a valid union. - Lizbeth, from the United States
A: The Seventh-day Adventist Church believes that marriage, “instituted by God, is a monogamous, heterosexual relationship between one male and one female. As such, marriage is a public, lawfully binding lifelong commitment of a man and a woman to each other and between the couple and God (Mark 10:2-9; Romans 7:2). Paul indicates that the commitment that Christ has for the church is a model of the relationship between husband and wife (Ephesians 5:31, 32). God intended marriage to be as permanent as Christ’s relationship with the church” (Seventh-day Adventist Church Manual, p. 155).
While a religious wedding service is encouraged, the Adventist Church also recognizes a lawfully constituted marriage performed by a government official such as a justice of the peace, or other legal equivalent.
