- The snow slowly melts this week as I clean up my workshop site and build 2 eight foot work benches, one low and one high, from a diseased massive yellow birch tree I cut down beside my timber workshop.
Here is the video showing how I made the wood chips and flipped the workbench over.

Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me.

Thanks! I kept wondering how you would get that heavy bench on it's feet.
2:59 buys you a codpiece Shawn @myselfreliance especially after the nose job 🤦🏻♀️ XX

Why does the bench look like Andrae the Giant with Deontey Wilders legs lol
Çok geçmiş olsun kolay gelsin iyi günler
Cali facial expressions are amazing. Her eyebrows have a life of their own.
That takes me back to a place I used to know
Yea Calli, Nothing beats a good swim at the end of a long day, fetching and watching Dad as he makes new things. While you Shawn pick up an injury when you least expect one. Life of a back woodsman, never dull.
These are the videos I love so much from you ...
Waited to see you flip it over. Next scene it was right side up. Oh well.
Bet that spot is becoming one productive and handy sugar shack. Awesome.
I couldn't imagine doing my work AND filming it...Those hardwoods are Awesome.
What a great life! You are blessed!
That’s quite the weapon you’re using on the huge log! The look of sheer adoration the Cali bestows on you is awesome. I have a 15 year old grandpup and when he looks at me that way my heart just about explodes. To know we’ve been honoured by their pure love is such a blessing. Cali is so special ❤. Big admirer in Ottawa 🇨🇦👵🐶💝
Go away.
James, vuelvo sobre ruedas a verlos, a tí a Cali y tus obras espectaculares, me place verte trabajar con tu innata creatividad. Te sigo desde hace años. Gracias! Desde Argentina mis saludos 🇦🇷😊
Thank you, Shawn. Been following you for a long time. love your videos!
Mister, I know you fall asleep before your head hits the pillow. You sure are a hard worker.
Best regards from Russia
Love these longer videos!
I've been watching since inception
More funner with hand tools
Thanks dude
👋BE BLESSED🤲 and safe.
.? was waiting to see how you got the 4 leg thing upright?😅
Me too!
He used a small tractor
The thing I like best about this channel is, no matter how long I have been watching this channel, (a long time) I always say, “what the hell is he doing?” I love that.
There's a method to his madness
@@randybryant9936 always.
Exactly 😂😂😂 it’s so awesome
I always know that not too long after I say "what in the hell is he doing now?" I just have to wait a few minutes until I can say "oh that's what it is!"
I literally came to the comments section to see if I could find out 'what the hell he was doing '😂
14:22 Am I the only one that thinks this slice would make a great tabletop? The wood is beautiful.
Also the tree stump would make a beautiful coffee table. Leave the live edge on too.😁
It will most likely split as it dries.
@@beckyumphrey2626 bummer.
Nope and yes? I mean I english isn't my first language.
The workbench is more valuable
You used almost the full range of basic wood "chewing" tools and techniques in this video, getting back to the basics again..
I am impressed by how sharp your auger, adze and other hand tools are, Shawn.
Watching Cali retrieve her toy never gets old...what a lovely dog...she is a champ.
27:47 I like how you switched to videoing with a potato to give using traditional tools that old timey feel.
m r s a vous et votre famille 👪 👪 je vous souhaite un bon week-end et de bonne fêtes de pâques 🐇🐇
This Video reminds me when i first started watching you building that first Cabin and i love it :) Greetings from Bosnia to you Shawn!
Good evening Shaun sorry to see you hurt yourself. I done that last week by dislocated my figure. Hurt more getting put back in
Hey, you always do a awesome job. And I just wanted to wish you and your family a happy Easter.
Inspector Cali James appears to be on top of things and has given her approval to continue with construction (a good thing for you, Shawn).
I really like watching your craftsmanship in felling, debarking, shaping, slabbing, and ultimately utilizing the timbers on your land.
Un abrazo fraterno para vos y Cali, es muy lindo lo que has hecho, te sigo desde el primer video. Cuando hablas no lo veo. NO HABLO INGLES. PERO CUANDO MOSTRAS TU TRABAJO. LO VEO TODO
I have been a "loner" most of my life, always doing things by myself. That's the way I like it and a big reason I enjoy and relate to what you do. Thanks!!
I prefer videos in which the people talk about what they're doing.
Это что, новый проект?!? Очередная стройка? Тогда я буду смотреть этот канал постоянно, я это очень люблю!!! Удачи, Шон!!!
How the heck did you get the work bench turned right side up?? was kinda hoping you would show it to us!
ruclips.net/video/u6JSW01v3yA/видео.html
I'm curious what the plan is for those workbenches and why they need to be 400lbs. Exciting stuff.
I am a stove guy. Adding firebrick on the inside walls of your stove,
will direct more of the heat upwards help preserve the walls of the stove.
Also never clean out all the ash, leave a 1-2" later in the bottom and fluff it up,
to act as an insulation blanket.
Stove will heat up faster and last years longer.
Being a Stove guy: these tips just flue out of you? Someone who's unbothered by a draft. I'll bet you!re a grate guy too! I'm sure you can be banked on to save energy. But don't let me dampen your spirit! I'll just pipe down now and let you vent.
Grande hermano eres ejemplo de muchas cosas para los que te seguimos gracias por tuvvalor y grandesa como ser humano
Always worth the effort you put into it to make the best version possible for your needs.
You have come a long way Shawn and we all look forward to seeing what you’ll do next.😊
Excellent video!
Hello Shawn,
It’s been a while. I hope you’re doing good.
Thanks for sharing, great video. And thanks for the education.
Take care, all the best, and God bless.

You shouldn't box with a Moose, lol. Hope you're OK.
What a special team you and Cali are! 👍😎🇨🇦🐾🌞🌲🔥
It makes me so happy when I see that you've posted a long video! I love settling in with a nice cup of Chaga tea, and just watch. ❤
Que bonita esa madera🪚👍🇦🇷
I am looking now for several years at your videos. i learned a lot off how you work and specially from your skills and your patience.
i am a dutch woman who lives in France. I have renovated my house and now i am working in my garden and try too be more self sufficient with wood, fruit, vegetables and my chickens. it gives me a lot off pleasure seeing your videos. Thank you.
Great job , but the bench loke more like a picknick benck to me ... Maybe for a summer party - the barbeque grill is already set :-)
One of a kind, Man and bench😊
Enjoy watching your videos and Cali is so beautiful, dogs are our best friends when we’re in solitude. ☮️💙🙏
❤❤❤Вас смотрю с улыбкой и любовью к Калли.Спасибо.😊😊❤❤
😍😍😍
I would like to know how you up righted the bench without breaking your legs off...
Would have l8ked to see that. Was waiting for it.
Small tractor
@@kingrafa3938 yea, he answered that farther down in the comments.
Happy Easter, I love the sound of the wood as you screw it out very relaxing indeed. Dogs are so much fun and company too.
There is a satisfying sound when working with wood, with the heart of trees. The crisp noise of the drill, the saw and the adze and drawl knife. It is a spiritual connection with the trees and Mother Earth a the gift of creativity. Something unexplainable until you feel that spiritual bond with everything around you. I often say that each of us is an artist to some degree. Making a work bench, maple syrup, an apple pie or the ability to be of service to others. We often will surprise ourselves when we decide to tackle a project we may not feel that we are able to achieve. We have this great gift of creativity and Shawn, it’s an energy you share with us and we so much enjoy watching and are inspired by. The Beauty of that land and Cali always by your side being part of it all, your Family. It is a joy and pleasure to watch your homestead grow and improve and develop with all the Love and Connection that you and your Family have with the land. Thank You So Much and Many Blessings with all the Abundance that Mother Earth gives! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
I would have liked to have seen how you were able to turn the workbench over upright without breaking the legs off. Was it difficult? With a gash on your nose, now you'll have to try and see over it. Nice day for a workshop build.

Most injuries are because we do something stupid.
Complacency
Indeed. Most of them happen on a friday afternoon when we're tired. Where we loose the intent of doing it the right way and instead go for the path of least resistance.
Or because someone stupid does something
I can attest to that! 😜
Really enjoy the work. Not counting the technical work on the video., just wondering how much time was spent doing the work. LOOKS GREAT 👍
I am still 6 years behind in the videos so I will post here. In the evening watching your stuff, I always have to put you on pause so that I can get something to eat after you start cooking something.
I imagine you could throw that red thing 500 times and she would go get it 500 times and still want more. 😂❤
Sorry about your injury, but the rest of the video is awesome ❤
Shawn, you're living my dream. Thanks for your extra effort of videoing your progress.
Sir, I hope the cut on your nose was desinfected. You do not seem to bother, hoewer stupid small injuries can turn into the most serious conditions in no time. Please take care of yourself.
A man's love for his DOG is so beautiful. I'm the same and my dog means more to me than most things in life......he never disappoints
Amazing watching you work as always Shawn , although a wee bit scary at times I’m terrified of chainsaws. Cali loves you so much. Have a good weekend. Hugs for Callie ❤️.ps I remember that time you got something in your eye when you forgot to put your goggles on .
Looks like a lot of work ahead thanks for sharing the videos with us.
so sorry aboyt your injury hope you;re doing well! stay safe ! greeting from Greece
Oops well I guess I’ll learn here in a couple minutes. What happened to you. Here watching 9:51 PM Friday. Yay, it’s Friday.
Always have to make time for a pat on the head of your best friend!🐶
日本から応援しています。カリがとても可愛いです。
I liked your 'projects' series better than anything else you do. No talking, just action. I do like hearing about future projects and some explanations but action on the projects is the best. I look forward every week to a new or continued project and I'll admit, I didn’t like having no videos from you for 8 weeks back in January/February, I'm hooked!
Thanks Shawn 💕💖🥰👍❤️🇺🇸🙏
God’s Blessings for you and your family! 🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏 love watching! Thank You! 😊❤️
Decent sized yellow birch log. Beautiful for lumber. Great video Shawn
You never seem to be at a loss for something to do , we love watching you create new things . Hope you are keeping well .
We know you are 🎉
That was funny with Cali. She was like well if I lay my head on my toy maybe he won't throw it and I can rest. Darn it he threw it anyways.
Ok I'll teach him. I'm going to go get it and lay down out there in the snow in the woods and rest and cool off.
😂😂 that'll teach him 😂😂
Take care and I hope you are getting better.
Best wishes and blessings from Spain
I did something stupid today. I was backing up my riding mower and hit my head on a pole. Fortunately, I got to laugh about it. 😂
Great video again Shawn ! Aloha ! Out of all the numerous shows on youtube i enjoy on a weekly basis ' youre channel is by far the #1 and going strong! This is better than the movies or television and its free with my popcorn and chaga iced tea ❤️
Shawn i wanted to ask if you get any marmots ,racoons ,
Porcupines much in your neck of the woods?
Happy Easter to you and your wonderful family and have a great weekend! 👍 ❤ 🐕 🐻 🍁 🌲
Skunks, raccoons, porcupines, and the occasional groundhog, but none of these are common here for some reason. Probably because there are lots of owls fishers, martens, fox, coyote and wolf.
@MySelfReliance that's interesting ! Thanks Shawn . The new work bench is awesome 💪
I have an old school, like from the fifties chrome base with a piece of oak on top, boy would one of those slabs make a beautiful table top. Shawn those are the biggest saw horses I have ever seen. What a great Saturday morning waking up to this. All the best from Michigan.
I remember watching the documentary on Dick Proenneke in Alaska back in the day.
Hello from one hatched in Winnipeg in 1952.
It's something that we all live vicariously by and there's nothing disgenuous about that.
The object of the narrative or story? Better now?
Been watching you for 5yrs now.. now you at your best. Wood working just like your plan from the start. Keep up with the good things you like to do
How you create useful things out of wood, imagination and sweat is amazing. I never tire of watching you make useful things out of solid wood.
Try a channel called Nik Rajivek. Stunning wood working.
Every time I watch I want to say it's "My self reliant" staring Cali with Mr. James in tow. Amazing work as always. Thank you.
Love yor vídeos
There’s some missing detail here… how did you go about flipping the table 180 degrees without overloading two of the legs rolling it? Seems questionable holding that much weight with so little depth into the log. Did you sink them into the ground?
If that's the workbench, what in the H will be the project?
Its easter, not christmas Rudolph 🔴. JK lol ouch glad you're ok, at least you didn't hit your eye this time. It's so satisfying watching you peel the bark off with that giant chisel, and those workbench legs with the wedges in the middle that expand them are so cool, does anyone know what that's called? Alright Cali no more excuses you have your own workbench now, get to work chop 👏 chop 👏. Have a good weekend Shawn, thank you for the upload! 👍
make a table for the next project, you use an entire giant tree to make it and it weighs up to 400 pounds when it's standing up. I think it's very sturdy.
Every drop of that liquid gold maple syrup.
Of all the super heavy logs you’ve moved around by yourself a scrape on the nose is painful but easy in comparison.
First time following since I got staffed on the solar denerator winner deal. I will take the loss for so called tax.🐻🙏🇺🇸
Okay. How did you get that workbench turned over? You didn't show it.
ruclips.net/video/u6JSW01v3yA/видео.html
I have never seen a log fight you like that one. Whatever you are going to make out of it, it doesn’t seem to want to be. Even the stump is like, nope.

He said workbenches in the description.
Hi James and Cali, hope you both are doing well. ??
From Derrick, Perth Western Australia been a long time I am Back.
Love the workbenches but how did you get the highest one up on its legs? You got a show us how you did that.
ruclips.net/video/u6JSW01v3yA/видео.html
Hi. Saw these hollow parts of felled trees. Why not making bird cases out ot them, in order to have a higher density of birds on your area. This would most certainly mean fewer mosquitos in spring and summer. Good idea or rubbish? Greetings from Germany. Chris
Great idea
Hey Shawn, dumb question but how did you flip that table over?

@@MySelfReliance Thanks much Shawn!

Sir I watched you work on that bench the whole video and I kept wondering how are you gonna get that over on its legs and you never showed it how did you do it?
Other channel early next week. I used a small tractor.
