Ugh. Tell that to my spell check when I try to type neighbour, favour, colour, etc and get nothing but red underlines because it's not "US English" lol
False! If that was true, then there would only be like a few dozen to a few hundred languages. Right now today there is still 6500 acknowledged languages in use on Earth. The truth is, when a language is different enough that a person who has never heard it has trouble making daily conversation, then it is in fact a whole new language, even if he has extreme commonality s with another language. If a British person or an American had never heard the other speak and tried to communicate all day, they would find conversation very difficult. A professor of linguistics at Berkeley stated the following on when a language has evolved into a new language: "The gold standard criterion is mutual intelligibility. If a speaker of only one of them hears the other, can they understand? (and vice versa). If so they are the same language; if not, not. The criterion looks for mutual intelligibility without prior learning of the other variety." For my money, American English is different enough to be it's on language, and the only reason some like you don't think so, is low esteem for America. Who are we to not have our own language. God knows it's different enough. Why should we not be allowed to say it is different enough to qualify?
it’s very common. often when people move their accent slowly begins to change and adapt to become what they are around. when he goes back to NZ and spends some time there the accent will strengthen again:)

KJ’s face when Whoopi tries to say that southern US accents are easier bc they stem from Britain 😂😂 like, what is she on about so do NZ and AUS (English language speaking) accents
It's true though. The southern accent DOES come from the England English language. If you're American, do a southern accent and then talk fast with that same accent, it sounds British, due to the British going there in the 17 and 1800s.
MusicBoxAlsoWater Britain didn’t just “go there”, they colonised America. They also colonised Australia and New Zealand. All of these accents to some degree stem from England, not just the southern American accent. Therefore, Whoopi’s point that the southern accent is ‘easier’ for Australians and New Zealanders to learn because the southern American accent stems from English is invalid, as this is also the case for AUS and NZ.
@@auntiesnixx5071 I know they colonized all of these countries, along with almost a hundred more around the world throughout centuries, as there are currently 54 countries a part of the commonwealth. What Whoopi was saying and that I'm agreeing with is that the American southern accent is easier for other English speaking countries, such England, NZ, AU to mimic because the dialects are similar due to mouth shapes needed to pronounce the words. Northern American and West coast accents are harder for other English speaking countries to produce because vowels and consonants are pronounced differently. Another reason the northern american accent is difficult is because of it's influence from other colonizing countries, such as the Irish, Dutch, and Swedish who were in the US and later the influx of immigration from many more countries in the late 19th century. Whoopi nor I are stupid and I know plenty of history. I learned all of this info and have heard experts talk on it a long time ago. If you choose to continue to disagree, have a great day. Bye.
MusicBoxAlsoWater lmao have you studied other areas or are you only talking about the American accent. Americans are quite closed minded and only think and talk about their own instead of trying to relate that information into a broader context . Critical thinking is needed and all you’ve stated is a matter of opinion since you have yet to reference or give evidence to your point. You claim to study in that area, one from Australia and New Zealand would see it from another view since we are also Influenced by the British, but you also have to take into account the indigenous and how their language and dialect can influence accents and language. To claim your argument is superior due to your own knowledge is not critical thinking but being closed minded
@@x.Rhymiie.x You do realize that they are referring to actors who have studied the craft of imitating other accents/dialects correct? When I state this, I'm not saying that all people can just do an accent. Obviously there are indigenous people in AU and NZ, as any other country, including the US, CA, Central America, and the Carribean who have been colonized, so I'm unclear as to why you're mentioning this, as all languages are influenced by many cultures/migration. Every country, no matter how big or small, comes with several dialects accents. Very nice of you to stereotype Americans as closed minded. I'm not one of your stereotypes though, as I've travelled around the world, lived in different countries, and speak several languages. If you want an argument, seek it elsewhere. I'm not going to prove anything to you by providing you with a history and linguistics lesson. This discussion is not that hard to grasp and you're making it into a bigger deal than needed. Do your own research and the proof will be before your eyes and ears. I'm done with this conversation. Have a great day and I wish you well. Bye.
