It's not even uncommon to do that, a 460 will fit into them fairly easily, because the Mustang II has no strut towers in the way, instead, it has that famous "Mustang II front end" that all the hot rodders sought out, for years, because they're self contained and handle very well. The car requires a customized trans tunnel to clear the larger transmission behind the 460, and optimally, you'd want to slide the whole drivetrain back into the chassis a few inches to improve weight bias. But there are hundreds of 460 powered Mustang IIs out there, some with huge stroker setups.(500+ cubes)
Sad the stang 2 got no respect. They were slow from the factory (really, everything in the 70s sucked) .This one is super. Fast, nice car with some performance mods...

A 79 Fox body with a 302 V8 was actually a few tenths slower than a Mustang II with the same V8, due to the Mustang II being lighter. Funny though, you never hear about hot rodders looking to install Fox body front suspension in their cars, they all want Mustang II front ends. That's because the Mustang II has a tiny, self contained suspension setup that handles great and allows for huge engines under the hood.
AmericanThunder my 77 weighed 3200 pounds my 70 fastback weighed 2700 pounds, the fox bodies weighed much less than the ll's at 2550 pounds, the mustang ll was way over built, solid platform handled very well, but stock 302 made 145 horsepower, but they could handle hp, unlike some other cars out there in there class, ripping floor pans not to mention there suspensions couldn't handle it.

I hear so many stupid "rumors" about the Mustang II over the years I've been building and working with them it's ridiculous, the worst one being. "Mustang II was really heavy, like 4200 lbs, and it used a pinto chassis" Logically, if you read that statement and thought, that person is a fucking idiot, you'd be right. Even if the mustang II WAS based on a pinto chassis(which it wasn't) how the FUCK would a pinto chassis weigh as much as a Ford LTD or 2WD truck?? The Mustang II, has a unique chassis, designed for ITSELF that SHARES some commonalities with the pinto design, but 90% of the parts will not interchange. The original Mustangs had more in common with Falcons than Mustang II does with Pinto. As for weight? The Mustang Coupe with a V8, weighs 2700 and change. I know this, because over the last 30+ years, I've had dozens of them in various configurations on my certified scale. My particular Mustang II is even less, because I lightened quite a bit. Is something that light with a 500+ hp stroker V8 pretty quick? Yes. Does a car that light with rack and pinion steering, heavy sway bars and performance springs handle very well at high speeds? Yes it does.

I have the drag coefficient numbers for the II, and it's very good in the wind tunnel. The reason was simple, Ford focused on fuel mileage, because they had to, due to the gas prices at the time. Making the car aerodynamic also makes it great for high speeds.

Your absolutely right, the problem was that was during the time of the gas crises, and car manufacturers were moving away from gas guzzlers.
