- In this excerpt from the film, Bright Light Fine Art and The Artists Guild captures the only self-portrait drawing David has ever done in public. While fielding some questions and speaking about his process, this consummate master slowly coaxes his likeness out of the paper. You will benefit from fifty years of teaching experience and get a love for observation translated into line. Go to the Artist Guild Library for the full unedited version. Join The Artists Guild and get access to painting and drawing classes: brightlightfin...
One of my very very favorite artist and teacher.
The best one!!!
Love this demo especially because he names all the parts of the facial anatomy.
I like the comment about not trying for a likeness. Takes pressure off. Thank you sir. Great presentation.
Likeness is a big factor if u r a professional painter. No master would be a master if there was no likeness.
@@ferdousislam2323 To me he wasnt discounting the importance of likeness but rather putting likeness in the context of other aspects with comments such as "being with it and doing as good a job as possible then the likeness will be there or not". But otherwise, I agree with your comment. Cheers
@@peterwilliamson4296 u r right
@@ferdousislam2323 Likeness is important only for commissions of portraits. Likeness otherwise can be in the way and can even be a problem. Trying to get and getting the likeness is less important that achieving stylization and overall vitality. if nobody knows the model, why care so much about likeness?
@@LyubomirIko whatever melody you are trying to say that's all present in classical old masters paintings. I am talking about that. melody and likeness in paintings are more important than anything. if anyone doesn't want it that's his or her choice.
Amazing artist great teacher
Amazing!
A few things I wished he had said in his 1st book
Sir so nice.
I really appreciate this
Wonderful, thank you so much¡¡
proportions are not fully correct...but who cares...there is so much on what he explains, how he constructs with ideas and thoughts...he makes the process way more important than the outcome.
@Nadeen Abd Elrahman Yes, and I find very powerful the way he manages to translate ideas into movements of the brush, in the mixing of colors... Everything has a meaning. Everything is enjoyed. No random quick movements or repetitive recipes and formulas, but observation and thoughts. His way of thinking and making blow my mind. True artist!
Who cares its amazing to me
Most of these people who pay to watch these demos in person are women in their 50s and 60s who are just glad to be there and paint as a hobby. Anything David says will get a reaction out of them.
the best
I guess there's at least one in every crowd, so let me be the bad guy. I do not like this drawing at all, or the techniques employed. I have spent my entire life drawing and studying the great drawings of the masters. I recognize so-so talent and superficiality when I see it.
For a entire life of drawing you surely need to have a portfolio to look at. Critique is easy, but let see what you got?
