I have fond memories of Vasary's elegant and sympathetic 1960's Chopin and Liszt recordings for DG, but I'm not sure what he is trying to convey with this recording of the Marosszek Dances. While I do not doubt his authenticity and commitment, the effect is one of heavy-handedness at best, and relentless banging at worst. TBH it is a very difficult piece to bring off, but I'm sure Vasary could have given a benchmark performance had he chosen to do so. What a pity he didn't.

Oh, dear! I'm an admirer of Vasary, but this is just a mess. He pulls this marvellous piece about mercilessly so that it loses all sense of dance rhythms. Listen to László Váradi's delightful performance (not the one on its own, which is missing the end, but the one preceded by Bach and Chopin). No contest!

I love this piece. I just don’t understand why the pianist bangs so much and takes the otherwise graceful rhythms and somehow makes them ugly
