Okay. So maybe we have some research to do. We are open-minded, and BTS is already our favorite Kpop group. So we didn't understand this one song... that's why we look to the comments. Thank you for those that are helpful and not rude 😊

I understand your introduction to BTS was 2/3 of their uplifting English songs, but if you JUST want good vibes music from BTS you will be disappointed, yes they do have happy upbeat songs (even in Korean) that are feel good while still having great lyricism, but most of their discography you will find them talking abt deep, meaningful and at times painful topics as well as a fiction storyline embedded in their music videos, if that’s not what you are looking for I suggest you check out basically almost any other “K-pop” groups. This is why ppl say BTS isn’t K-pop, BTS is so much more than K-pop. But if you just want “bops” easy to listen to where lyrics don’t even matter or are just talking abt a girl or abt love, you’ll find it in other K-pop groups (as well as the actual lazy writing of repetitive non-sensical words/sounds).

In order to understand BTS's music, you have to want to work at it. If you don't have an interest in learning about literature, psychology, and introspection, or don't want to take the time to do research, then move on. BTS is not for. There are hundreds of other musical artists that you can listen to. Listening to songs with catchy beats and simple lyrics that mostly talk about falling in or out of love might be a better path for you to follow. It's okay to like simple songs. Most people do.

I have never heard someone say Black Swan has lazy writing just because of a couple of repeated words in the hook 😂 The song is a favorite among the fans literally because of the lyrics and how relatable it is. It’s about a person’s fear of losing their passion. In BTS’ case, their passion for music, but anybody who has a career can relate to this song.

If you don't read books you won't understand any of the song. If you don't read any literature you won't understand any of their music. It has nothing to do with heartbreak or girls. This is inspired by Martha Graham's quote a dancer dies twice and the first death is more painful. It's about losing their passion for their art. And the second layer of the song has to with the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jungs book Map of the Soul which talks about how a person must learn to accept all sides of themselves Persona, Shadow and Ego in order to become whole. They have 2 albums exploring this premise

"Lazy writing" - Oh really? How many songs have you written in a language you aren't fluent in or don't speak at all? But that's not even the reason they do it in this song. Repeating words is a literary device that puts emphasis on something. It's called epizeuxis. "bump bump bump" is the sound of the heartbeat referred to in that phrase. "jump jump jump" deepens the sense of depression and dark thoughts that are referenced in the song. Other times they use repetition as something their multinational/multilingual audience can sing along to in the hook - "nah nah nah" and "yeah yeah yeah."
"Black Swan" is on the album by BTS called "Map of the Soul: 7." It is inspired by a book about the psychological theories of Carl Jung called "the Map of the Soul" - the persona, the shadow, and the ego. This particular song explores the concept of the "Shadow" - the darker things that exist in everyone but that we hide and/or repress - our fears or our prejudices, for example. In the case of this song, it's the fear of losing one's passion for creating music, or perhaps losing one's ability to perform/sing/dance due to something physical and beyond one's control. The context of this song and this album is that BTS was coming out of a period in which they were all stressed, overwhelmed, overworked, receiving a lot of hate and push-back from all sides (other groups in Korea, the media, the music industry (labels, charts), all while skyrocketing to fame and fortune. They were all feeling and doing much better, but this album and the world tour promoting it was to be their last before members began entering the military. It was released in February 2020. They were to tour until October, then Jin and SUGA planned to enter the military by the end of 2020. In South Korea, there is something called "The 7 Year Curse" - basically it's very difficult for groups to come back after members join the military. When BTS was writing this album, they were tired, but they also knew that after this album and tour they might not be able to return as a group, as hard as they might try and as much as they wanted/intended to...since a lot depends upon the public, over which they have a lot less control. So this song has a very deep, personal meaning for them - what if when we return we have no passion for music/dance/performance? What if when we return we DO have a passion for it all, but we had to sit out too long due to mandatory military service and our fans have moved on? These were the things they were facing when they wrote this - very beautiful, very honest, very vulnerable, very deep - song.
Hopefully this serves as a lesson to you that BTS isn't "lazy" or "singing about girls" or whatever other frilly or meaningless thing you are used to with American musicians. Everything they do is well thought out, tied to literature, psychology, social commentary, and more. Even their 3-album series on the topic of "Love" - "Love Yourself: Her," Love Yourself: Tear" and "Love Yourself: Answer" wasn't just a bunch of silly love songs. It was a deep exploration of love - with the central message that you have to love yourself before you can love or be loved by others.

    • @OT7_DopeOldARMY
      @OT7_DopeOldARMY 4 месяца назад +47

I should note that because of the pandemic, BTS released "Dynamite" and "Butter" and "Permission to Dance" - in English - as a way to cheer up their fans and the general public. The plans I mention above as far as the tour/album promotion all had to be scrapped because the world shut down two weeks before their tour was to have kicked off in Seoul. Their popularity ended up skyrocketing during this period, ironically, and as tough as that entire period was for them (and the rest of the world), I think it also made them rise to a level of fame that made it more likely that they can continue their career as a group after the last members' service is over in 2025. They definitely intend to continue as a group and have promised it to fans repeatedly. They still, however, have lingering concerns that fans will move on while they are gone. We ARMY try to make it very clear to them that we will wait - that they will have their fans and their career when they return. We do that by streaming and buying their music, among other things.

Martha Graham: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.”
In a nutshell this song is about the fear of losing your passion (music, dance, art, etc) BTS is sharing their inner shadows (fears) and how it would affect their life.
PS. i will keep checking back for more BTS reaction, till then have a great day.

  • @sugasmeow
    @sugasmeow 4 месяца назад +175

I actually had to pause to compose myself. BTS has NEVER been lazy with anything in their 10 year career.
First, it’s almost never about a girl.
Second, this song was written to reflect dancer Martha Graham’s quote, “a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” BTS is afraid that they may one day lose their passion for music.
Third, BTS’ albums are thematic. Black Swan is in the Map of the Soul series. This album series focuses on the psychological concepts of Carl Jung. Jung believed that our psyche consists of our persona, the outward self we show others. The shadow, our fears and doubts. The ego, our dreams and hopes.
Black Swam falls in the shadow realm. They are showing us their fears and doubts.
Contrary to your “lazy writing” comment, BTS are intelligent people whose music make the fans work at understanding their lyrics. You almost need a PhD in psychology, astrophysics, marine biology, and storytelling to be a fan.

Criticism like "lazy writing" often stems from a misunderstanding of the deeper meaning and purpose behind the song. In the case of "Black Swan," repeating words is not indicative of laziness but rather a deliberate literary device known as epizeuxis. This technique is used to put emphasis on something, intensifying its impact on the listener. For instance, when BTS repeats phrases like "bump bump bump" and "jump jump jump," they are not just random repetitions but symbolic representations. "Bump bump bump" mirrors the sound of a heartbeat, conveying the heightened sense of anxiety and fear explored in the song. Similarly, "jump jump jump" deepens the portrayal of depression and dark thoughts, adding layers of complexity to the lyrics.
Furthermore, repetition serves another purpose in making the song accessible to BTS's multinational and multilingual audience. Phrases like "nah nah nah" and "yeah yeah yeah" become memorable hooks that fans from diverse backgrounds can easily sing along to, fostering a sense of unity and connection within the fandom.
In essence, dismissing "Black Swan" as "lazy writing" overlooks the intricacies of BTS's songwriting and fails to appreciate the depth and intentionality behind their creative choices. It's essential to delve deeper into the song's themes and artistic choices before passing judgment.

I totally understand that making the leap from BTS' fun upbeat English pop songs to one of their own introspective, poetic, Korean-language songs can be a bit discombobulating!! It's too bad you don't have a bit of a guide here to give you a little heads-up info about the content of the next song you give a listen to
Martha Graham is a prolific ballet dancer and choreographer, with a famous quote about how a dancer dies twice, the first death comes when he/she is no longer able physically to dance anymore. It's a difficult loss to accept.
This song by BTS is based on that quote, which is why it's titled after a famous Tchaikovsky ballet, "Swan Lake", which has a character called the Black Swan (there's also a famous ballet movie about the ballet staring Natalie Portman and the movie is titled Black Swan, and is a psychological thriller about a woman's drive for perfection in her dance leading to her having a psychotic break)
BTS uses Graham's quote as a starting point to analyze their own worries about when their passion for music might fade away and just become 'work'...for them, that would feel like dying their first death
The silent ocean floor, the black maw they are jumping into - these are all metaphors for the depression they feel when their music becomes a pressure from the outside instead of a release from within themselves...but the lyrics end with hope, that they will fight against that feeling by looking deeper inside themselves to understand their feelings, know themselves better, and use those feelings as inspiration to make more music
I understand your quibble about repetitive words in lyrics, but for us non-Korean BTS fans, these repetitions are a lifesaver!! They're usually the only lyrics we can initially sing along with to feel an even greater connection to the music, but really I think if you look at it objectively there are far fewer repetitive lyrics in any BTS song compared to say, BlackPink, and it's much more in line with western music repetition (how many times does Beyonce say 'If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it" or the Beatles say "yeah, yeah, yeah"?)...I think if you think about it you might admit you only notice it more here because they're the only sounds/words you recognize in a song that's 95% filled with a foreign language. I dunno, just a thought. I hope you check out more BTS!
And I'm ready to suggest songs with a bit of an explainer first so you know the gist of the lyrics and what you're getting into ❤️

Lazy writing and talking about a girl 😂 I've never heard anyone say that about Black Swan before. You think this is repetitive do you not listen to current western music at all? The song totally went over your heads. BTS' songs are generally very deep and have a lot of philosophical, cultural or psychological references that you need to watch explanation videos because there are a lot you wouldn't get on your own. Their lyrics are now being displayed in a museum and taught in schools for how brilliant and poetic they are. It's also a major reason why they are who they are. Their lyrics resonate with people, motivate them and has saved many lives.
BTS cover all genres and make songs for all moods and tastes. If you want uplifting songs or songs to bop your head to you'll find plenty of those, but don't pretend like you're know it all music experts when you're far from that.

If you want shallow, you're on the wrong address with BTS. They write poetic songs with deep messages, double and sometimes triple meanings, and references to cultural, social, psychological issues. You'll need an explanation video for most of their songs to get all of it. BTS will be reunited mid June 2025. Jin was the first to enlist and he will be back mid June 2024. They have to serve for 1,5 year (22 months for military social service).

First time that I saw someone saying that BTS has lazy writing.
They have songs based on Carl Jung's theories (he founded analytical psychology by the way). Black Swan its part of that.
Black Swan" details the relationship artists have with their craft, comparing the harrowing feeling of loss of love for the craft to death, with lyrics such as "If this can no longer resonate, no longer make my heart vibrate, then like this may be how I die my first death."
Not lazy writing but lack of analysis and reading comprehension of your part... OR plain simple closed mind.

BTS discography reflects their life stages. When they were teenagers, they talk about school things, when they were young adults they talk about issues faced as young adults and so on. That's why they can come out with certain theme across their discography.
Black Swan was released in 2020 when all of them are adults and at the 7th year mark of their career. Actually the album map of the soul:7 was supposed to be their last album before military but covid happened and they postponed their plans.

"Black Swan" delves into the fear of losing passion for one's art, expressed through haunting melodies and introspective lyrics.
The song's powerful choreography and emotive vocals highlight BTS's ability to convey deep emotions through music, creating a captivating experience that resonates with listeners on a profound level.
The music video further amplifies these themes through its captivating visuals and choreography. It portrays the struggle between light and darkness, with the dancers representing the inner conflicts and emotions of the artists.
The use of symbolism, such as the mirrors and the shadowy figures, adds depth to the narrative and enhances the viewer's understanding of the song's message.
Overall, "Black Swan" is a masterful piece of artistry that delves into the complexities of the creative process and the emotional challenges faced by artists. It invites listeners to confront their fears and embrace the transformative power of art.

These are artists talking about their fear of losing their love for making music. You are the first of dozens of reactors I have come across who has described their lyrics as "lazy writing" and that totally floored me. As someone here already wrote, "bump bump bump" and "jump jump jump" were meant to emphasize deeper emotions. If you are not into deep, meaningful artistry, you will not appreciate BTS. I suggest that you keep an open mind, keep captions open when watching their Korean-English songs, and watch more of their recommended songs. They are beyond kpop so the 3 English songs they made may appeal to your fun, poppy side because they did that during the pandemic to raise everyone's spirits. But if you want songs that evoke emotions and make you think deeper, then continue watching BTS. I may come back to your channel some day to see if you have changed your minds about their "lazy writing".

Not sure how y’all got “about girls and heartbreak” and “lazy writing.” It was kind of shocking a bit because Suga at the beginning after the “Do your thang” part says “My heart no longer beats to the sound of music, maybe that would be my first death. I’ve been always afraid of.” So it was interesting y’all missed that and just went with the most typical assessment not even a minute into the song. The person on the left (Sorry I didn’t catch your name) mentioned Black Swan represents death…
Namjoon (guy with purple-ish hair/deep voice) says after Suga’s part at the start of the song that “If the song no longer affects me and doesn’t make my heart vibrate then this would be my first death, but what if the moment’s right know?” Like I get not knowing enough about BTS to understand the message right away but from my observations it seemed more like you guys just didn’t take the time to read it properly and immediately jumped into why you don’t like the chorus without connecting the previous lyrics from before to them to see the picture. But anyway, everyone already gave y’all the breakdown. I just needed to give my 2 cents, hopefully the next videos from now on are a little more open minded and please take your time.
I feel like you guys are expecting the music to be generic and typical of a “boy band” but they’re a group of 7 artists who come together as one. I guarantee you if it was lazy writing, I doubt BTS would be where they are now… Good day 💜

This song is about their fear of one day losing their love and passion for music. This song was written during a time when BTS was both physically and mentally exhausted. South Korea's biggest threat is North Korea, not the U.S. South Korea and the U.S. are allies. People should count their blessings that we have enough men and women who volunteer to serve in the military, but just a reminder a draft could easily happen if need be. I could only imagine if military service was mandatory service in the US all the different excuses some men would come up with to not serve. BTS consider it an honor to serve their country and never once tried to dodge their duty as able bodied Korean men even though they definitely deserved an exemption.

Not everyone one has seen the movie Black Swan or are looking for deeper meanings when listening to a song mainly because here in the US most songs don’t have it! But that aside it’s about the music! And Black Swan is one of my top favorites! I don’t think you meant disrespect by saying lazy writing! You could have termed it better! BTS Army is very protective of the boys with good reason! But even some go a little overboard! This is your only 3rd song by them and the first two were their all English songs released during pandemic! They were meant to make you feel good! Permission to Dance their only other English song is the same! I’m a 59 years and have been Army since 2018! I love all their music and you’ll find their not usually about loving someone or losing someone! Mainly the topics have more meanings! It’s fun trying to figure them out ! Don’t take a lot of the comments to heart! Keep an open mind and you will find they have really good songs!

You missed the bars at the start that explained the point of the song. The album explores Jungion psychological concepts of a person's Persona, Shadow and Ego. This is a song about BTS members fear of losing their passion for music and what would that mean to them if it happened right now.
I don't think there is any likelihood that South Korea will attack America! They have the constant threat of North Korea on their border, I think that is a bit more worrisome to them.
I am 51 year old ARMY from UK. You do get used to reading the lyrics whilst watching and it becomes 2nd nature. You also could watch a section to hear the flow and watch the MV and then go back to read the lyrics or vice versa. Some reactors watch lyric videos first to understand the lyrics then watch the MV. Up to you really. But this was definitely NOT lazy writing, the metaphors help to paint the picture if what they are feeling. Also, if you think a song is about a girl, heartbreak, or romantic relationship, you are 99% of the time wrong with BTS. They are often talking about internal struggles, love for ARMY, or just simply friendship.

The song is way deeper than you think it is.
It's about being afraid that you will eventually loose your love for music and that is the absolut death for an Artist in the music industry.

You could not like one genre but still respect the art. I mean lazy writing just because you heard “pump pump pump” and “jump jump jump jump” that’s kinda superficial listening and not trying to understand. I wish you pay more attention to the lyrics and the meaning behind the song since most of their songs go deeper and have emotional connections. If not then it’s okay for you to not react to them. Hey guys I just want to say right off the bat, just in case any ARMYs might've missed this, or may have a different opinion from me, even though they shouldn't because this is literally True; MAJORITY, if not all, of their 2015+ Songs, were Never about FEMALES. They changed all that Loooooong Ago, and Since got more introspective and spoke more about Themselves, self-growth and each other as a group, and of course, their love for ARMY the Fandom. So just in case if you ever is like oh did they not have any females or why is there no female this, and female that. Even most of stray kids and 80s, are not talking about a simple romance and such, it's either BROmance, their Fans, and\or introspective Profound self recognition type such, which are uusually ver or quite Emotional. So yeah just keep that in mind. Now Some MOre Recent stuff, Some Solos (Jk, Jm,V /maknae Line) stuff, there's been romantic undertones. But that's about it

Hi, my comment may be late at this point but just want to share them with you nonetheless. The lyrics to this song is about their fear of losing their passion for their art. This is their expression of how they feel about their craft as artists at this point in their careers. So while the repetitive words may seem lazy writing may actually be poetic justice for the artist.
Since these men are genuine in conveying their feelings to fans we often realize their true emotions in the music and lyrics they put out.
Thank you for giving them a listen. Hope you find something in their discography that you will like 😊.

"Black Swan" details the relationship artists have with their craft, comparing the harrowing feeling of loss of love for the craft to death, with lyrics such as "If this can no longer resonate, no longer make my heart vibrate, then like this may be how I die my first death."
"A dancer dies twice, and the first death is the more painful" - Martha Graham Quote. This song was inspired by that quote, and by the movie Black Swan. It also covers themes from their Map of the Soul: 7 album and Jungian psychology, the theory of Individuation, (the Shadow, Ego, and Persona).
Here are a couple songs from their album, that are nothing like any of the songs you have already listened to. These are BTS songs, but performed by the main songwriters of the group as solo songs. Please react to them. And the lyrics are meaningful.

If you take out all the english parts of the song, you won't say its lazy writing. Maybe you can try writing a song in korean and let us judge if its lazy writing from you 😊
