    I know people say stuff like "the best school play of Dune ever" to mock this show, but i think if you watch it as a piece of theatre it actually works really well. Scenes like this would be perfect on the stage, and i actually find the presentation of this mini-series really interesting as like a Shakespearean take on Dune.

      People forget how things were in 2000. Yeah there was Farscape but there was also stuff like Cleopatra 2525. This was pretty solid for the time period.

    This type of scene is what the Lynch film lacked. No incoming danger, no outlandish imagery. Just two characters having a moment, while discussing something interesting about the planet.

    I guess no one on the crew noticed that her contact lense was sliding out of place there for one shot. If they ever do another version of this - and why wouldn't they - I hope they get the eyes right finally. They're supposed to be a solid blue, with no whites, pupils, or irises. The more addicted to spice you are, the darker the blue. The Fremen and Arrakeen natives were said to have eyes of midnight blue, so that's pretty dark.

      Totally agree, they just need the right director and crew to pull it off. There is so much story and detail in Dune, if they want to get it right, they might as well make it a series...

      Contact lenses are always going to slide out of alignment. There’s really nothing that can be done about it. The only way it won’t look that way is for it to be done digitally.

      Like, I would imagine, the majority of Dune fans who have seen Dune visualized on the screen, the 1980s film is very poorly written, designed and and acted, I for one can't stand it. The 2000 critically and commercially acclaimed miniseries and it's equally critically acclaimed sequel - Children of Dune. are far the superior in all areas. If you like Dune you should watch them.

    The series had its good scenes but most of them feel flat an were tedious. I think they overdid the religious references it sounded more like someone was pounding a Bible on my head. The special effects do look dated and also were really done badly except for certain ones with the worms. We definitely need an updated version of the Dune franchise.

    Dune is really a stupid story.
    A couple of points:
    1) The Spice is the most important substance in the Universe. Why does the empire allow it to be controlled by the Fremen and a few waring houses? Why doesn't the emperor take direct control of the planet?
    2) The Fremen are collecting water from the air. How does that work? There isn't any humidity.

    • @benthelearner6104
      @benthelearner6104 4 года назад +5

      I must admit the point #1 is really good...

    • @nodinitiative
      @nodinitiative 4 года назад

      Direct control as in actually personally staying on the Planet Arrakis?

    • @carnivalfun22
      @carnivalfun22 4 года назад +22

      Both of your points are covered in the story.
      1. The Empire rests on a balance of power between a host of different factions, primarily the Landsraad, the Padishah Emperor, the Bene Gesserit, and the Spacing Guild. All are dependent upon and suspicious of the others' powers. If one faction gained total control of Arrakis and spice production, then the balance would collapse and conflict would be inevitable. As for the fremen, they don't try to control spice production. They only launch small raids against harvesters time to time. This is deliberate Fremen policy. They want to hide their true strength until the Mahdi comes to them.
      2. Arrakis actually has a good deal of water, but it is trapped below the surface and inside the sandworms/sandtrout. When there is a spice blow, water is released. As a result, there is humidity, but it comparable to the Atacama desert.

    • @EtzEchad
      @EtzEchad 4 года назад

      Merrick Wilson
      There can not be a conflict unless the spacer guild allows it. They would not allow a war over spice production.
      Yes there is some water, but it is clear that the humidity is essentially zero. You could not extract water from the air.
      If Herbert has described it as deep wells instead of extraction from sir, it would make sense, but it doesn’t.
      Herbert made people act in was that human beings wouldn’t in order to drive the plot. He was a poor writer.

    • @carnivalfun22
      @carnivalfun22 4 года назад +12

      And the spacing guild would allow the war. It's a major plot point that they provide logistics support for the Harkonnen/Imperial attack. They don't do this out of plot convenience; they have good reasons to allow war. If the Emperor or any one House of the Landsraad had absolute control over spice production, then the guild, who above all other factions depends on the spice, would be completely at their mercy. This is exactly what happens after Paul takes control of Arrakis.
      As for the water issue, maybe you are right, and I don't know enough about hydrology to argue. However, nearly all works science fiction contain some scientific inaccuracies and impossibilities, but that doesn't make them inherently bad or stupid. I wouldn't say the Empire Strikes Back is a bad movie just because Hoth could never support life, nor would I say Gene Roddenberry is a bad screenwriter due to the inconsistencies in his depiction of warp travel. I'm not Herbert's biggest fan, but I don't think he's as bad as you're making him out to be.
