  • There’s a reason he’s called the Mad Titan, after all. Thanos is one of the most universally-recognized supervillains to ever emerge from Marvel Comics- period. Created by writer-artist Jim Starlin, he debuted in The Invincible Iron Man issue #55 in 1973 and has been a staple of the comic book company’s Villains Pantheon since. From his early days of chasing the Avengers in a rad helicopter to becoming the very embodiment of the Multiverse itself, he’s been at the core of major cross-over storylines involving Marvel’s super-groups for over 50 years. In some depictions, he’s a delusional tyrant, convinced of his glorious purpose and his quest for the Ultimate Prize. In others, he’s a cold-blooded conqueror who’s become indifferent to the very concept of Death itself. So iconic is the legacy that he has served as the inspiration for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s decade-long box office dominance in the form of the Infinity Saga. But where Kevin Feige’s Thanos was a “strong-willed rationalist” whose origins remain obscured in mystery, Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi’s 2006 mini-series Thanos Rising gives us insight into the psyche of the Destroyer; and it is downright spine-chilling. Thanos’ origin story is disturbing as hell, and involves some gruesome and rather personal deaths. Let’s Explore!

    Thanos Rising contradicts nearly everything that Jim Starlin, Thanos' creator wrote about his creation, including having Death speak to Thanos (Death never speaks to Thanos), having Death relish in the agony of people dying (Death hates suffering), Thanos having any offspring whatsoever (Thanos almost killed Nebula for suggesting this), Thanos having an insane mother instead of a caring, loving one (a mother that Thanos in fact killed during his nuclear bombardment of Titan and NOT vivisection), Thanos relying on technology to shoot energy blasts (instead of his natural Eternal abilities), and last but not least saying that Titan's computers cannot perceive Lady Death, when I.S.S.A.C did in fact perceive Lady Death in Captain Marvel # 33.
    Thanos Rising is essentially published fanfiction set in an Elseworld, or maybe the distorted memories of a Thanosai clone as it dies on some barren rock and should be thrown in the dustbin along with other such atrocious retcons like the Star Wars sequel trilogy and the Timeless Child episode of Doctor Who.

      Yeah, it's called bad fanfic writing from an author that didn't know or didn't give a shit about the character's actual backstory, the one that he was paid to write about. In previous issues, Thanos' mother loved and cared for him, and she was killed in the nuclear bombardment of Titan, and Thanos stated that she was the only one he would have considered sparing.

    • @reviewwithyou2
      @reviewwithyou2 2 года назад +4

      Mentor was his father, and the smartest titan, while his mother was a "seeer," who ..traditionally, was believed. Except when she tried to kill her son. Then, they just thought she went crazy.
      The Original verson was a bit better though. This was done because they wanted to make Thanos as dark as possible, and that's the worst they could think up (which is pretty bad, to be fair).

    • @reviewwithyou2
      @reviewwithyou2 2 года назад

      In the comics, he didn't really kill unless he thought mistress death wanted it, or commanded it (outside of the snap). One kind of had to tick him off to get him to kill.
      Example: The gardener he didn't want to kill, and told him so, but he fought back against Thanos and Thanos took his gem and killed him. The Speeder he didn't kill, but did leave him (as a baby) to the Collector.

      @reviewwithyou2 2 года назад

      Eh, yes and no.
      Thanos being killed early Does prevent that, but does also cause a few other things in return.
      1. Celestials numbers would go upward, because they would have more planets to feed from (in the comics, their numbers had to be reduced for the universe to thrive).
      2. You would probably still have "Thunderstrike Thor," which was rtarded.
      3. There would be no "restart" to the 616 marvel universe.
      4. Eventually, a few of the Reed Richard(s) learn from this problem, and choose to make "food planets" in various universes.
      5. There is a theory floating around that if the Infinity stones aren't used every so many thousands of years, they would cause the universe to self-restart (big-bang), which means everything would be destroyed and returned new. Thanos hunted them down in the comics universe, and not too many people knew about them, besides him, ..or weren't actively looking for them. Which means they would still be laying about, unused.
      6. Also, IF someone else gathered them, it could've been even worse. We saw how the magus, goddess, and nebula used the gauntlet.
      The best plan is basically what warlock did, and give stones to various separate people to hold and defend. They were a little too open with showing the gems off during fights, but you get the idea. Killing Thanos would probably screw everything up even worse, and the best thing would be to secure the stones in the past, to ensure he doesn't eventually get them.

      In the Marvel universe she is a real being that supposedly likes Deadpool alot.

    • @reviewwithyou2
      @reviewwithyou2 2 года назад +1

      She is what they call an, "aspect." meaning, she IS real, but has no real true physical form.
      examples:
      Galactus is viewed only to US in this "humanoid form," or to Earth-based people, but to other races among the stars, he looks like a verson of those races. It's basically what THEY see, not what IS, otherwise you would see a cloud, like from the crappy Fantastic four movie.
      Mephisto has been shown in MANY forms, based on where he is located, or who is viewing him. Not only because he can change form, but because everyone sees him differently.
      In the comics, his henchmen see her as just a dead corpse laying around that he messes around with, so they are pretty sure Thanos is fuqqed up and not to be messed with, but heroes never really SEE her at all, and she is only talked about by other aspects, like Thanos or Mephisto.
      I hope that clears it up a little.

    Movie Marvel changed Thanos character to better fit a wider audience I would guess but the movie Thanos is completely incorrect especially in motivation. The created comic and real character that is Thanos wanted to wipe our existence on a massive scale with the infinity stones to impress death. Death is personified as a female figure which through different instances Thanos met her earlier in his life and wanted to be with her. Intimately and forever. So in order to gain access to her and impress her as there was a bit of a need there, he reasoned that killing the majority of the universe if not all existence would be a great way to feed her souls and make her extremely happy with him. That was his motivation for gathering the infinity stones and trying to wipe out existence. Because he wanted a girl to fall in love with them, and that girl/female… Was death. So ya ….. movie marble and Figgy didn’t think that would be good for sales with the general public as the decision making that they geared towards has to do with pandering and profit, so they change his character and his motivation to better fit a wider audience to do just that… Pander and profit. This is the water down less than Thanos compared to the real Thanos

      @@riveraharper8166 Everything about movie Thanos was alright. Brolin did great, he looked just right...Only, the writing was terrible and the character himself was weak af compared to his comic book counterpart. I mean, Thanos was immortal because of mistress death in the comics, and was able to use the stones to change the entire universe into everything he wanted, not just a single snap (which also fried him kfc-style).

      @@reviewwithyou2 Correction: Everything in that movie was pathetic and mediocre.
      -They oversimplified Thanos.
      -Vastly inferior than Infinity War.
      -They screw up his complex motivation and family issues.
      -No extra time for the Thanos family issues or no more part of the original Infinity war story was introduced or shown.
      -He became some mere punching bag for overbuffed heroes.
      -Become a mere plot device for cringe feminist pleasing forced girl power moment!
      -Made a lousy cheap time travel nonsense instead of the original IW story.
      A time travel story which was shown better in movies like 2067...
      What's next in Mcu? Galactus or Gorr will be punched in the face by some pink hair female group again?
      Joke...

      @@riveraharper8166 You had better be careful, they'll do it too..
      Throwing away mistress death like that is what did me in for the entire series of movies.
      ..And yet, here I am, rooting for a female character, while all the fems call me a pig..? The world is so weird...
