I'll say this, youtube doesn't always recommend me what I like, but every time it recommends a someone's talking arms, discussing vintage or weird tech, I'm always happy.
this RME card is used in recording studios a lot. MADI is one of the big standards in audio. the expansion card has word clock and midi, and the SDI connectors are for time sync as well, this card doesn't do video.
Certain optical media drives have very desirable properties on the controller side (some old Plextor drives have the capability to deliver the raw, converted optical signal making them suitable for super low level disc ripping) excellent opticals (will cope very well with badly pressed or degraded media), some didn't "correctly" implement parts of the specs, making them more consumer friendly (DVD region lock not properly enforced, not limited to the 5 "allowed" region changes). I'm pretty sure this TEAC unit falls into one of those categories.
At first I assumed this was some audiophile server snake oil but if this drives 96 speaker surround sound then I mean yeah, that's... fair.
Advantech don't do cheap things, their industrial/embedded boards cost way more than you'd expect
They also make boards for big names in the industrial domain(Rockwell, Siemens, GE... etc)
That particular board you're holding costs 457 USD on mouser right now, the resale value is always there
Nice to see you again, missed your videos.
I'm terrible at getting around to editing videos. Shooting them, I'm pretty good. But I put off editing for so long. :P
@@PeterBrockie lol I'm not alone on that )))
Some Tascam audio CD writers will take TEAC drives, so it’s possible that’s why there’s a market. Glad you got your money back by selling that audio card. As for the cat… Mine just typed at least half of this comment…
Makes sense. Reminds me of how 5 volt SmartMedia cards are worth WAY more than 3.3 volt ones because they're used in a bunch of drum machines, etc.
These Advantech industrial motherboards are not junk at all, they usually sell for 100~200€. It just takes some time for the right buyer to come around...
Yeah, anything used in high end gear like this usually worth a lot, once per decade. Hehe
One nice piece of attention to detail is the reservoir caps next to all those USB headers on the motherboard. Trying to ensure that that voltage supply is stable, even across long cabling, is quite nice, and more than a lot of manufacturers do!
Although the motherboard specs looks trash, but it's actually designed for industrial application, probably for better reliable OS environment?🤔
Oh I'm sure it's as reliable as any other industrial motherboard. I meant it more in the context of resale value after the teardown and in relation to the X99 board the others came with.
For the fans, you can easily increase the speed on demand by wiring a soldering iron to your 12v, bonus points if you use the reset switch to toggle it off and on
It's funny how you're complaining about the motherboard only having two audio jacks when HP, Dell, and some Lenovo OEM motherboards only have one "combo" jack.
All the hallmarks of an industrial product rather than a consumer one. Weight is of little concern when you’re building a few hundred of something.
Happy to find your channel!
Have you sold that Advantech board? If not, I'm interested!
From what I know about Barco they skimp on absoutely nothing when it comes to quality. They are like the HP of specialty AV equipment. I wonder if they may have run VXWorks or RTLinux on this rather than Windows knowing the application.
Agreed. I didn't see anything remotely poor quality in this. Especially after looking at companies like Barracuda who put the cheapest garbage in their systems and charge $25k for it.
Cool! You should contact audio savvy tubers like unfa and ask about this hw.
I was thinking on bidding on that thing. I like that seller. Nice to see it even though I didn't get it.
i do the same thing, look for obscure high end stuff, cause it shows up eventually and cheep usally, people dont know what it is or got alot of times.
I think I'm autistic for enjoying this so much
Oh man where do I buy one of these? It sounds like an absolute bargain for the Madi alone
Interesting. Did you get the software running? Where did you get this unit? Florida? That mobo was not what is supposed to be in there. We only made 7 prototypes and the one you have is 1 of the first 2.
eBay. I've seen a few on eBay around the same time with 2 different motherboards, so it's possible there are variants or custom models out there for a specific use case.
@@PeterBrockie well not with the audiocue branding in that logo. Did you ever try and run the machine. If the drives were not repurposed it should boot right up. Indeed its an audio processor and generator for simulation systems.
@@TheOriginalThomas It was from a hardware recycler, so no drives installed. From what I saw, Barco isn't exactly forthcoming with software downloads to make a new boot drive. haha
@@PeterBrockie yeah indeed the normal software is a proprietary Linux version. It’s a shame if you ever wanted to know how a 64 speaker immersive sound system would sound like this would be the way to go. You still got fine money for the RME madi interface. They’re really good.
I think You didn't get video because this CPU does not have an iGPU...
The Intel i7-2600 100% has an iGPU. The issue was a faulty DisplayPort to HDMI adapter I was using.
@@PeterBrockie My mistake, it's the 2550k does not have an iGPU
