“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.” Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
Julia okay while I 100% agree with this quote out of context, it did come out of the mouth of one of that book’s most irritating characters lol. Still, even if I hated Miss Bingley, she was right about this one haha
Helena de la Peña SAME - I think there is just a stereotype surrounding those books that I can’t get past 😂 like I don’t want people seeing me reading them lolol. definitely need to get over that haha
A Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue is so so funny! It's a historically set adventure, comedy, romance series that had me laughing randomly, shedding tears sporadically and lifting my mood like nothing else. I recommend this book 1000x over
While not *really* historical, Red, White, and Royal Blue is GREAT if you're looking for romantic comedy content. Female President, First Son, a Prince (not quite dukedom), and American and UK politics included. It's incredible! Casey McQuiston's humor and characters have a place in my heart. If you've read it already, my apologies.
I've been finding your videos especially comforting over the last couple weeks. Thank you for providing a little peace of mind in these troubling times!
IDK why I like.... never thought about people reading Jane Austin back when she was writing them?? Like some part of my brain thought they just appeared in high schools around the globe in 2000...
If you want another series that follows an assassin from childhood to adulthood, please read the Light and Shadow series by Moira Katson, it's one of my favorites and it's about a little girl who is chosen to be a spy/assassin/protector for the Duke's niece as she goes off to court. It's super interesting and it has really intense court politics because the niece is trying to social climb!
I would recommend the Deanna Raybourne books! She has two series: the Lady Julia Grey series and the Veronica Speedwell series! Love both :) Also for a wee throwback I loved the Meg Cabot regency romances which are Nicola and the Viscount and Victoria and the Rogue
Mary Balogh ,Huxtable Quintet series. Starting with First comes marriage. Madeline Hunter, The Rarest Blooms series. Starting with Ravishing in Red. Sarah MacLean- love by numbers series. Starting with Nine rules to break when romancing a rake
You should read Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos! Its a delightful middle grade that was my favorite as a child! I know it has been compared to Harry Potter, but Theodosia shines on her own! I feel like this is a series that is never talked about so you should give it a go!!
I loved the books by Elizabeth Aston, especially 'The True Darcy Spirit'! It's all about the Darcy family after Pride and Prejudice took place and Darcy and Lizzy had five daughters. I love the way she delves deeper into the world like it was then, not just the viewpoint of the upper class. If you like romance in a historical setting, you'll love these books :)
For Regency romance you have to try anything by Julia Quinn my personal favourites are Because of Miss Bridgerton, The Viscount Who Loved Me and How to Marry a Marquis.
I’ve been watching your videos for years and we have the same reading tastes and I was so unsure about nevernight but I saw you read it and enjoy it so I knew I just had to read it, I binged the whole trilogy and it became my favorite series of all time and I even got a tattoo of my favorite quote. Thank. You. Regan.
I loved Middlegame so much!! It's actually more coming of age than you might expect, and very relationship based as you follow these two siblings who keep losing and finding each other.
For historical fiction maybe "The Duke and I" by Julia Quinn. "Night Fire" by Catherine Coulter is one of my favorites But also I started to read Anna K and I'm obsessed!
Sarah Maclean’s Scandal and Scoundrel, is a fabulous series. Also Julia Quin’s Brigderton series. Amanda Quck has some great characters. Soulless by Gail Carriger. How To Love A Duke in Ten Days by Kerrigen Byrne.
Another vote for Sarah MacLean, especially if you like Greek mythology-inspired tales. Her Rules of Scoundrels series is where a lot of people start and it is great, but I would recommend starting with her Scandal & Scoundrel series since some of the characters make appearances in the Rules of Scoundrels books.
If you are looking for romance novels in the same style as the Duke books you should absolutely check out Cat Sebastian's The Turner Series. Lots of dukes, LGBTQ+ romance, neurodivergent characters. It's wonderful!
Regency romance recommendations: The Malory - Anderson series by Johanna Lindsey (The Malory family is super fun to read about. The first 5 books especially are *chef's kiss* in my opinion.) Then Came You and Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas The Devine & Friends series by Olivia Parker The Bevelstoke series by Julia Quinn (The first book is a bit more serious, but the second and third are quite funny.) The Sterling trilogy by Samantha James (I've read the third one only, without realizing it's a series at first and it's a great book, so I'm recommending the whole series.) The Crown's Spies series by Julie Garwood (I have to admit I haven't read the full series, only the last two books, but Castles (the final book) is one of my all time favorites.) And many others historical romances, but I'll stop here.
Ahh I am so excited that you are enjoying romance!! All of Tessa Dare’s books are great! I would also recommend Kerrigan Byrne, starting with The Highwayman (historical romance). One of my favorite books of all time! I also think you would like the Faefever series by Karen Marie Moning! They’re urban fantasy and romance later on in the series. I would also LOVE to see you read Black Dagger Brotherhood, which is one of my favorite series of all time. It’s paranormal (vampires) and once you get past the first book, they get AMAZING!
GEORGETTE HEYER is the queen of regency romance (if you're okay with TONS of laughs and NO sex). These Heyer novels have very equal partners: The Grand Sophie, Sylvester, Cotillion, The Nonesuch, The Black Sheep, A Lady of Quality, Faro's Daughter (if you ignore that she kidnaps him and keeps him locked up in the basement... ahem), and others. Another very funny and entertaining series: the Smythe-Smith Quartet by Julia Quinn starting with Just Like Heaven (her early novels have some consent and power dynamic issues etc., but not her later ones). Or if you want it to be more literary and Austen-ish, go with Anthony Trollope or Dickens, e.g. Dombey & Son or Little Dorrit. Or ELizabeth Gaskell! Hope this helps. :-)
Tessa Dare writes fantastic heroines. Glad you’re enjoying. 😊♥️📚 It’s actually quite fun to watch you explore romance books. You might enjoy some paranormal romance also. Kate Daniels is a great one.
The first regency romance I read was A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah Maclean and it did not disappoint! Steamy romance, charming, and I flew through it! It's similar to a Hades/Persephone retelling, but regency and dukes and rogues!
Eeeeeeeee I love love love love historical romances, and The Duchess Deal is hands down one of my favourites. Some others you might want to try: The Autumn Bride by Anne Gracie is another top romance favourite. Cat Sebastian is fantastic in everything she writes - her Regency Imposters series is so good! Mimi Matthews' Parish Orphans of Devon series is wonderful and a bit more on the realistic side. Any Duchess Will Do by Tessa Dare is another excellent one. The first three books of Eloisa James' The Wildes of Lindow Castle are wonderful. And finally, the Scandalous series by Caroline Linden is amazing!
I think with Robin Hobb's Elderlings books each one gets progressively better, I remember thinking the first one (maybe even the second) were good but not great but as you move into the Liveship traders onwards they're amazing :)
Omg...I just started reading “bringing down the duke” and I’m loving every minute of it! I had heard about the book but it was not until your video, that I started reading it! Thank you PS- love that Hattie made him give her “Pride and Prejudice” as reading material 🤣🤣🤣
I am reading The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell and for school I'm reading The Power by Naomi Alderman. I can't wait to get to all of the books on my shelf cause after this series i'm going to read Priory of the Orange Tree next!
I highly recommend Soulless by Gail Carriger - it's a paranormal historical fiction rom-com that I feel you're going to love! And it's extremely funny, I don't really have a sense of humour but I couldn't stop chuckling while reading this one 😂
I haven’t read it myself but the author has a podcast with Brandon Sanderson called writing excuses which I love but the alternate history series by Mary Robinette Kowsl seems right up your alley. The pitch she always gives is Jane Austin with magic. The first one I believe is Shades if Milk and Honey and it is definitely up there on my tbr.
I can't recommend Outlander series by D. Gabaldon enough! I was never into steamy romance novels, but these books hooked me up so hard I couldn't wait till morning to start reading them again. Time-travel (post WWII → Scotland circa 17XX). Great historical stuff (politics, battles, etc). Love triangle between people who live 200 years apart from each other. And no one is safe in those books. So you are eager and at the same time afraid to turn over the page. And Jamie Fraser, he is my all time favorite male character. There's TV Series with the same name @ Starz, cool adaptation.
The Bride Bet by Tessa Dare comes out this year! You should also try Sarah MacLean - Wicked and the Wallflower is the first in a trilogy that concludes in June!
1. I always suggest Sabrina jeffries' hellions of halstead hall series. What a hoot. 2. OWLS readathon this month! I'm aiming to read heartless, bloodwitch, Waistcoats and weaponry, the woma. In cabin 19, and atlas shrugged. I only need 5 owls for the career I want so it seemed doable. Going to be super angsty though. 😂😂
I am stuck at the same point with Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. It's been sitting on my TBR for months since I read the first book and I need the kick in the pants to read it too!
I've been loving historical romance audiobooks this year, and it's become my comfort reads genre. I highly recommend two series I've recently read and adored: the Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas and the Bareknuckle Bastards series by Sarah MacLean.
The Secret History of the Pink Carnation series by Lauren Willig is a blast. Historical romance about lady spies set during the Napoleonic Era (which overlaps the Regency Era, iirc). There’s also a modern-era frame story that’s cute and fun. Highly recommend.
I don't read steamy romances, Regency or otherwise, so can't help you there - hopefully you will get some good recommendations in the other comments. Your TBR looks great and perfect for this time. I just picked a list of 12 for the OWLS readathon - wish me luck! Stay well
I have read so many books and I only have two marked as favourite on Goodreads: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase. You NEED to read Lord of Scoundrels!!! It's so witty, so funny and wonderful and almost the only book I reread every now and then... ...and now I want to go and read in again :D
One of my all time favorite books is Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson. It’s so cute! It’s not a very long book and you’ll fly through it with how easily it grabs your attention. Highly recommend!!!
I haven’t completed this series because it’s so long but I feel like you would enjoy Outlanders! It’s got a historical vibe but also has elements of fantasy that you would enjoy. Also romance is steamy so I feel like this would be a really good option for you right now!
have you thought about doing the OWLS readathon?? It seems like something you would enjoy exploring! It's hosted by Book Roast i believe and has super cool harry potter related prompts
Being a mood reader I find it really hard to make monthly tbr lists BUT! for once I know what I'll be reading in the next couple of days. I just started The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh last night and I'll be starting Kings Rising (3rd book in the Captive Prince trilogy) by C. S. Pacat really soon, as well as the short stories that go with this volume.
The best regency romance writer is Georgette Heyer. Her stories are brilliant and are actually set in the regency era with all their etiquette, mannerisms, society and history. Plus they are hilarious.
Also highly recommend the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. They are technically mysteries but are much more of a comedy than your typical detective story.
FYI Seanan Mcguire writes a TON of Urban Fantasy series. I love her Toby Daye series, and the InCryptid series, whilst very different (Cryptozoology?!) is fun
I love Tessa Dare! Duchess Deal is one of my favs by her! If you haven't yet, try Romancing the Duke by her. It has LARP-ing as a plot point. It is amazing
I recommended this on your last video, and I’m gonna push it on you just one more time because it was so good: Well Met by Jen Deluca. It’s along the same lines of a historical romance, but it’s contemporary. It’s really well done!
So, I dont see this one mentioned but...this is my fav regency romance Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean. Honestly I havent read any other book that gets me like this one. Please read it and if you dont like it... dont tell me because I get defensive about how precious this book is to me, hahaha.
I started reading The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes and I've been really enjoying the mix of 1930s Kentucky and romance. I'm pretty picky about the romance novels I read and this one had been impressing me so far! Definitely recommend! 😊
If you need recs on what to read after you finish that Tessa Dare series, my recommendation is...more Tessa Dare! Her Castles Ever After series is also amazing, and I love (most) of her Spindle Cove series as well. Nobody's doing it like Tessa Dare. I also looove Julia Quinn, though many of hers can be a bit problematic, but they're definitely in the comical tone like TD. If you want to try JQ, I recommend starting with Because of Miss Bridgerton.
@@Tinahgirl83 The second book in the series is my FAVORITE. I recommend reading the Beauty and the Blacksmith novella, since it fits into the main narrative, and 4.5, Lord Dashwood Missed Out, is my personal fave. So i guess yes on the novellas lol but you can skip 1.5, Once Upon a Winter's Eve, if you want to!
I cannot believe Georgette Heyer, the Queen of regency romance, hasn't been mentioned here! The writing is very much as authentic as possible to the era. It really helps quench that Pride and Prejudice hole.
If you want a historical fiction and a Romcom try reading Storm and Silence. Although it's a wattpad book, this series is phenomenal and this is coming from a fantasy nerd.
If you would like a good romance series, I would suggest "The Chesapeak Bay Saga" by Nora Roberts. However; it does not fit the "fun historical romance" genre that you are looking for, but it contains probably my favorite book of all time and I think its worth a glance.(BUT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ IT I PERFECTLY UNDERSTAND!)
Since you loved the Girl meets Duke series by Tessa Dare then you should definitely check out the Spindle cove series by her too because it's adorable!
One of my favorite and fun historical romances is “A Bride in the Bargain” by Deanne Gist! It was also my first that opened the door for me, highly recommend!
I plan to read Call Me By Your Name, Feedback, Scorch Trials, Borne, Such a Fun Life, and maybe this new Alien: Phalanx novel! The Alien one seems interesting because it’s set in medieval times so I’m interested to see how it unfolds and if they end up defeating them! ❤️
If you want to expand into other Regency romances you could try Sarah MacLean. Her Bareknuckle Bastards series is a lot of fun, it features aristocrats marrying criminal overlords. But nice ones!
I would definitely recommend Courtney Milan's Brothers Sinister -series - SO GOOD! The characters have stayed with me for a long time, I rarely find romance books (historical or contemporary) that I actually care about and don't find immediately off-putting (ugh a big no-no to historical inaccuracies, overbearing/thoughtless men, helpless/dulled down women, one dimensional characters in general, unnecessary drama, lacking of social criticism, weird power dynamics, etc etc.)
Yes! I love Courtney Milan's books. Tessa Dare is really entertaining but definitely full of historical inaccuracies. I'd say Tessa Dare, Courtney Milan, Sarah Maclean, and Lisa Kleypas are all great starting points for historical romances.
Regency Romance Rec: Her Caprice by Kiera Dominguez. And it's sequel The Telling Touch. I don't usually read Regency Romance, but I love the small magical/fantasy twist in these books.
I think you would like J.R Ward’s black dagger series. It’s a romance/urban fantasy. It’s my “candy” books when I need to cleanse the mental pallet. Lol
If you like/ or want to try to read more urban fantasy, you should try the first book of The Hollows series by Kim Harrison. It's called Dead Witch Walking.
@peruseproject Regency authors to look out for (other than Tessa Dare): Sarah MacLean, Loretta Chase, maya Rodale, Anna Campbell, Suzanne Enoch, Lisa Kleypas (I suggest starting with her Wallflower series), Julia Quinn (her Bridgestone series is coming to Netflix), Tracy Anne Warren, Sabrina Jeffries, Stephanie Laurens (her Cynster series is fantastic), Victoria Alexander, Eloisa James, Laura Lee Guhrke and so many more authors it would take me forever to list them all!. Also, if you want to try an urban fantasy/paranormal romance: JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series is one of the best!
“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
Julia okay while I 100% agree with this quote out of context, it did come out of the mouth of one of that book’s most irritating characters lol. Still, even if I hated Miss Bingley, she was right about this one haha
Julia but miss bingley said this tho
Yeah not a fan of her just like the quote 💜
i’d be so much more into romance if the covers didn’t look like that 😭 i know you shouldn’t judge a book for its cover but i just can’t not do it
Same, they're so cheesy and cringy
So true!
Right?😭
Your loss...
I recommend this book 1000x over
Emily Crooks I was going to recommend that one! Such a great book! I don’t hear people talk about it enough. It’s hilarious!
Deanna Raybourn is so good! Her Julia Grey series and her Veronica Speedwell series!!! These are gems 💖💖💖
Yes! Omg I love the Veronica Speedwell series so much. I binged all five available books last month.
I adore the Veronica Speedwell series! 😍❤️💕
"Night Fire" by Catherine Coulter is one of my favorites
But also I started to read Anna K and I'm obsessed!
Sarah Maclean’s Scandal and Scoundrel, is a fabulous series. Also Julia Quin’s Brigderton series. Amanda Quck has some great characters. Soulless by Gail Carriger. How To Love A Duke in Ten Days by Kerrigen Byrne.

Her Rules of Scoundrels series is where a lot of people start and it is great, but I would recommend starting with her Scandal & Scoundrel series since some of the characters make appearances in the Rules of Scoundrels books.
The wallflowers series by Lisa kleypas was quite enjoyable.
If you are looking for romance novels in the same style as the Duke books you should absolutely check out Cat Sebastian's The Turner Series. Lots of dukes, LGBTQ+ romance, neurodivergent characters. It's wonderful!
Regency romance recommendations:
The Malory - Anderson series by Johanna Lindsey (The Malory family is super fun to read about. The first 5 books especially are *chef's kiss* in my opinion.)
Then Came You and Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas
The Devine & Friends series by Olivia Parker
The Bevelstoke series by Julia Quinn (The first book is a bit more serious, but the second and third are quite funny.)
The Sterling trilogy by Samantha James (I've read the third one only, without realizing it's a series at first and it's a great book, so I'm recommending the whole series.)
The Crown's Spies series by Julie Garwood (I have to admit I haven't read the full series, only the last two books, but Castles (the final book) is one of my all time favorites.)
And many others historical romances, but I'll stop here.
Bevelstoke ❤️
My favorite is the McCabe trilogy by Maya Banks. It's not about English nobility, though. It takes place in the Scottish highlands.
Yesssssss

I had heard about the book but it was not until your video, that I started reading it!
Thank you
PS- love that Hattie made him give her “Pride and Prejudice” as reading material 🤣🤣🤣
The Spinster Cove series by Tessa Dare is also amazing!!

And it's extremely funny, I don't really have a sense of humour but I couldn't stop chuckling while reading this one 😂
O Yes I really think you will love the whole Parasol Protectorate Series. They are sooo much fun.
IM pretty sure she read soulless a few years ago and didnt like it. Which is a shame because I love all GC books
Ok I checked she read it in 2016
@@queenigelkotte I had no idea! That's a shame though 😅
YES THIS SERIES OH MY GOD
I haven’t read it myself but the author has a podcast with Brandon Sanderson called writing excuses which I love but the alternate history series by Mary Robinette Kowsl seems right up your alley. Try ' A rogue by any other name' by Sarah Maclean. It's kind of a hades and persephone retelling
That series you mentioned by Jeff Wheeler got my attention now I want to read that series
The Bride Bet by Tessa Dare comes out this year! You should also try Sarah MacLean - Wicked and the Wallflower is the first in a trilogy that concludes in June!
This channel is the only place on RUclips I do not have anxiety.
1. I always suggest Sabrina jeffries' hellions of halstead hall series. What a hoot.

Hi Regan, just a recommendation for historical fiction romance, try Julia Quinn books. They are the best 😍
I second this! And the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn is being adapted into a Shonda Rhimes Netflix series so all the more reason to pick it up!

Jane Steele, pure entertainment. A bit of murder, a sprinkle of romance, a good laugh 👍🏻
If you’re enjoying Jennifer L Armentrout, the first book in her Lux series is free on Kindle right now!
I'm hoping to read Stone Cold Touch this month too!
I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Middlegame!
I already read 2 books this month also lol my TBR is: In 5 Years, Emma, Crescent City, Lovely War, American royals, watching you
If you need recs on what to read after you finish that Tessa Dare series, my recommendation is...more Tessa Dare!
I just read the first one in the Spindle Cove series. I really enjoyed it! Are the novellas worth it? I’ve just bought the second novel in the series.
Luna Lovegood Thank you! Where does Beauty and the Blacksmith fall?
I cannot believe Georgette Heyer, the Queen of regency romance, hasn't been mentioned here! The writing is very much as authentic as possible to the era. It really helps quench that Pride and Prejudice hole.
Im not sure if you have read them but if you like Tessa Dare try Courtney Milan and Lisa Kleypas. They are both auto-buy authors for me.
The Tommyknockers and The Ash Princess!
love that sweater
Ooo I'm crossing animals toooooo! Love it
The Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn!
Rules of Scoundrels series by Sarah MacLean was how I got started in the romance genre
Love, Lies, and Spies by Cindy Anstey is a really good regency romance! Really any Cindy Anstey books are great books.
I just borrowed the audiobook for The Dangerous Alliance from Hoopla, I’m excited to start it soon!
Just started The Broken Kingdoms by NK Jemisin last night. Hoping to read her new release soon
go with the bare knuckle bastards series by sarah McLean next! On par with the girl meets duke tessa dare series in my opinion.
I'm busy reading Duchess in Love by Eloisa James and enjoying it so much!
I think you would like J.R Ward’s black dagger series. It’s a romance/urban fantasy. It’s my “candy” books when I need to cleanse the mental pallet. Lol
If you haven't watched Jane the Virgin, I recommend it (and the book that comes out of it)
I’m hoping to finish all the books that I’ve started but never finished during April! I’ve already read two, so I’m guessing I’ll do pretty good 🙄😋
Keeping within your "Duke" theme I would recommend The Winter Duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett! It seems like it would be up your alley.
I am reading Godsgrave now and loving it :)
I’m the biggest fan of your Instagram and I didn’t even know there was a RUclips channel, but love the videos💕📚
Please read The Outlander!! It’s historical fiction with a good romance, politics, action & adventure, and a touch of fantasy.
Have you read Red, White & Royal Blue? It’s contemporary romance but it’s so cute and funny.
I really want to read Middlegame too!
i love your sweater!
