I'm currently rewatching your videos again, and I really love how everything is explained so clearly and organized so conveniently (I mean the playlists). I'm writing my thesis now on the topic of creating a pop-up book, and in the future, I want to work on this professionally. You're helping me a lot with this :) Thank you, wonderful person!
It's nice to hear that you find the videos so useful. The playlists are a little out of date! A number of videos have been added since I organised the playlists and I do intend to update them all. In the meantime if you have any questions I'd be happy to try and answer them.
*You are a Godsend.* I hope you know how happy you make me, finding this channel means everything to me!💕 I'm autistic and I've always, always had a passion for making things in paper and clay (cards and miniatures especially) and pop-up books fashinated me from a very young age. But I've been recovering from a very dark episode in my life, when I lost my ability to do most things, and I couldn't continue to go to school :( I have an upcoming project I've been working on in my mind for MONTHS now, and all I hear is voices inside me that I can't do it, and learning new things and following instructions is hard for me, so I tend to give up and just cry about it.... I know, lame, right? 😩 Anyway, I want to thank you for being SUCH a good teacher and not just inspiring but MOTIVATING me to keep trying and do things step by step. You have filled a deep void in my life, and I wish I could express my gratitude to you in a greater way. *Thank you SO much!* 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 Love, Rosie.
Thank you Rosie - what a wonderful message from you - really delightful. I'm so pleased to hear that the videos help and encourage people in ways that I had never thought of. So I'm wishing you all the best for your project, you sound so enthusiastic that I'm sure you'll do really well. Duncan
Hi Rosie,, I hope your project is going well. I've just released another video (Tutorial 31), you might find it interesting/useful/fun .... I'm aiming to have another eight on the site by the end of the week. Best wishes, Duncan
He is a calming terrific teacher. I’m sure you’ll make some beautiful projects and perhaps share them with the rest of us some day. Part of the problem with being creative is managing what’s in our heads and getting it out! You are not alone!
I just wanted to thank you for doing these videos! I'm trying to learn based off your older manual and it's *so* nice to have video to explain where my gaps of understanding are. Thank you thank you thank you!
Hey, thank you so so much for your tutorials - they are perfect!! You literally saved my life, cause I'm a student of design and we have to deliver some Pop ups til next week and I was really desperated (my professor didn't explained anything!), before I came across your channel. THANKS A LOT!!
Hi Duncan-I absolutely love this channel!! I’m learning so much. How can I buy your book “Pop-Up!:A Manual of Paper Mechanics” without spending a fortune. Will you be reprinting this book soon? I already have your first book “Pop-Up Design and Paper Mechanics”. Love this book so much. I’d love to learn more about pivoting mechanisms.
“Pop-Up Design and Paper Mechanics” is the most recent of the two books. It's a much higher quality print job and much more user friendly. I wrote "Pop-Up!:A Manual of Paper Mechanisms" before I understood the subject as well as I do now! It does have a few pull-tab mechanisms that are not covered in the newer book, but apart from that I wouldn't really recomend it! I don't think it will be reprinted. I see there is a copy available on Amazon... there are also various placs on line where you can find a pdf. I am currently working on another book about the more complex mechanisms that have been invented in the last few years. Hopefully it wont be too long before this is available.
At 5:25 mark of your video the use of the pull strip isn't just an image behind a window. How would you get the image change to seemingly appear from slots and lock in?
Yes, you've spotted a clever variation. I may do a video on this later in the year.. The design in the book is based on the simple pull strip but with some additions. There is quite a big piece of card (A) attached to the back of the page behind the window. There are two additional pieces of card attached to the pull-strip that are pulled down as the strip is pulled. The bottom of the lower of these two is attached to the strip and even when the strip is pulled down the top edge of the piece must remain between A and the back of the page. Similarly the upper piece - its top is attached to the pull-strip and it's bottom edge must remain between A and the back of the page even when the pull- strip is all the way up. How to control the direction and amount of movement is explained in the tutorial. I hope this helps.
@@thepop-upchannel4919 I am sure I will be able to find them, it is just nice to be able to support an artist such as yourself whom I am getting so much help from.
Is there a way to make a pull-strip non-linear so it goes along a slightly curved path instead of a straight line? Also, can you make a diagonal automatic pull-strip?
To make an image move along a slightly wiggly path (but more or less going in one direction) you could use the mechanism explained in Tutorial 39 but make the little piece shown at 2.21 quite narrow so that it can follow the curves....... To make an image follow a big curve you could use the type of mechanism explained in Tutorial 27 at 7.47 - but in this case keep all of the mechanism behind the page and attach the image to the end of the swooping arm using the kind of mechanism explained in Tutorial 39........ A diagonal automatic pull strip? Tutorial 72 is something like that.
Amazing videos. But I believe there are some softwares to accomplish this, like Photoshop, After Effects, InDesign or OpenToonz. Does anyone know about this?
So, the way he showed to do it, you don't need measurements. The distance from the opposite crease to the tab is where he marked, then spun it around and put the correct crease/tab there.
this sweet grandpa's videos helps me a lot on my last exam's project

great tutorial im using this as inspiration for my magazine
Just ordered the earlier book (used copy) from Amazon! In the meantime, I'm enjoying the latest book.
Thanks for the tutorial. Can you pls. provide measurements?

It would be greatly beneficial if you could provide a schematic with measurements of the parts so I can better comprehend their scale and positioning.
This is great!! I would love to support you, how can I get your books? They are ridiculously unaffordable on Amazon?
It seems the book is currently out of print (I'm sure it will be reissued) - meanwhile there are pdf versions available on the net.
