  • In this video I struggle through several issues to metal cast a 3d printed Easter egg, but after melting the metal and casting it we end up with something truly awesome.

I think this cast looks amazing and the video was interesting and informative.
About the blowout on the top of the cast - if it's not dangerously sharp and you can handle it safely, then you should leave it there, it adds character to the thing, the main shape is interesting and beautiful, but it is too regular and organized in its form, it has to have something for the eye could rest on

    @ ProjectTube , I just bought a 3d pen !
You can add sprues and vents like welding with the pen, just preprint the pieces then use pen to attach to print.
you can also add support for when pouring plaster to hold print in place.
Works really well - worth the 30 bucks just for that !
P.s. your vac table needs a canister bottom so it has area to cool and be in an ice bucket.
no more melted hoses - use a old propane torch tank cut top off and weld plate to that then add silicone mat on top with hole to tank and weld barb fitting on tank side so vac pump dont get anything sucked through. Get an old peanut jar for glass vac cover - they are thick and work great.

Speaking from experience, it's possibly to destroy a good vacuum pump if the molten metal gets to it. After trashing a pump I made a metal box in the vacuum line to intercept any molten metal and and added a replaceable paper lawn mover air filter to clean any small debris from getting into the pump.
I've also found the a moist piece of cardboard (not corrugated) can be used in place of the silicone seal when vacuuming the hot flask. It will last 10 or 20 pours. It's cheaper and for me, the cardboard survives the heat better than the silicone.

Thanks for the tip! Good idea to protect the vacuum pump and i'll have to try the cardboard.

it's kind of a pain in the butt but fine metal mesh in one layer, wrapped near the edge of the investment can help hold things together. this was probably just bad luck with the mold cracking but if you're worried about it in the future it's a thing that you can do.

Yeah I think I didn't leave enough headroom from the top of the model to the top of the investment. This investment isn't really made for resin so the resin expanded during burn out and popped the top. I'll leave more headroom on future models until I use up all this investment and get something more specialized for loss resin.

@@RealProjectTube lol and youre pushing the limits through using the jewelry casting process. Bunch of weird stuff is bound to happen

The thing I learned. Sometimes THE ROCK will roll down the hill, no matter what !!! The trick is to get out of the way. Leave it the way it is. Thanks for sharing (the error).

The result is cool, once you'll have removed the thing on top it will be a nice egg, tbh.

You should try to cast some bronze too. The brass is pretty thick, but bronze is really more fluid. You'd have better results, IMHO.
It's more expensive because of tin, of course, but you'll enjoy the result.
