Following Stonewall Jackson's narrow-margined, hard-fought victory at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, initiative in the Northern Virginia Campaign shifts out of the hands of Union Major General John Pope over to General Robert E. Lee, who will seize the opportunity to launch a major counter-offensive against Pope's Federal Army of Virginia. Linking James Longstreet's Right Wing with Stonewall Jackson's Left Wing, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia is now fully re-united and ready to do battle against the Federals. However, Pope soon learns of Lee's movements and begins a withdraw beyond the north banks of the Rappahannock River. From August 22nd - 25th, 1862, the two armies will stare down one another on opposite banks of the river in what becomes known as the First Battle of Rappahannock Station. After days of probing and feeling out the Federals' positions, Lee, Longstreet, and Jackson devise a daring plan to launch a wide flanking movement around Pope's right flank using Jackson's Left Wing. And so, from August 25th - 27th, Jackson's "foot cavalry" will conduct a series of marches, maneuvers, and skirmishes with Pope's army in a string of engagements known as the Manassas Station Operations.

The more I learn about McClellan the more I think he was the best general the rebels had
Little mac>>>>>> everyone else before grant
I asked myself, was there ever a time or two when his over cautious attitude actually played in favor of his army or the Union in some sort.
@@SoCalYar id have to think, but its arguably more egregious here than the Peninsula. You can’t send the 6th Corps because you don’t know where Pope is? How? You just sent a brigade to Manassas and its got destroyed, so now you hesitate to send a Corps?
Major General Little Mac, Confederate General, hey that has a ring to it
@@elmascapo6588Meade was better
Pope: “Hah! I took your hat and cape!”
Stuart: “Hah! I took your coat and Dress!”
lol
Pope "Without that hat and cape, you are just a man!" LOL!
Little fact: The Union Cavalry which surprised JEB Stuart and captured his hat and dispatches was commanded by General John Buford, the same John Buford who would hold back the Confederate advance at Gettysburg, and help secure the high ground to the south of the then small Pennsylvania town.
How is that a little Fact ?
hmm thanks, assigning Buford to cavalry was the single best thing Pope did during his time as commander
@@WarhawkYT Got him a promotion and out from behind a desk in the Adjutant General’s Office.
@@WarhawkYT 2nd best was bringing up the Iron Brigade to duty.
For all his impactful efforts during the Civil War, "Little Mac" should have received a medal from the South and a court martial from the North.
you might have something going there lol
Best civil war channel ❤
thanks WitlessCloudz
i have never seen someone put out such high quality, detailed, and accurate videos so consistently. definitely one of my favorite history channels, you totally deserve more popularity. keep up the great work
Pope: What a great opportunity! Let's go!
McClellan: Pff! Let them fail. I'm just gonna sit here and watch. Nobody steals my thunder!
My g-g-grandfather, whose image is my avatar, was killed at the Battle of Bristoe Station/Kettle Run. He was in the 60th Georgia Infantry of Lawton's Georgia Brigade, Ewell's Division. They were positioned behind a deep railroad cut on the flank of the advancing forces of Hooker. Eventually a New Jersey regiment was sent to flank the flankers and they fired a volley into the 60th Georgia, killing my ancestor. He's buried somewhere on the battlefield. His image is on a battlefield marker less than 100 yards from where he fell. I allowed them to use the image in trade for a personalized tour of the battlefield. LOL They assigned a guide to me and my sons who had been preparing for me by metal detecting to find the firing line of the 60th Georgia. A line of dropped, unfired bullets were found indicating the firing line position. We took photos from the approximate position of his unit. I took a handful of dirt and a rock to put by his grave marker in Georgia. His firing line was positioned just off the battlefield boundary on private land and I had permission to take dirt and rock. Anyway it was great being a guest of honor at the 150th commemoration of the battle.
I'm excited for this campaign series. I live in Manassas and hike the battlefield all the time. Second Manassas is such an overlooked fight. Thank you for the great videos!
I’d like to visit Manassas some time, when is the weather the best for hiking it?
@@ryanyoder2694 I recommend the fall. Summer is hot, humid and full of ticks and chiggers. The fall lets you enjoy the landscape and take in the views.
glad to hear that! we're excited for Second Manassas too
@@ryanyoder2694 Grew up in Manassas. Early autumn or mid spring would be your best bet. It’s hot and humid all summer and can get cold as hell in the winter.
I’m shocked 2nd Manassas isn’t a bigger deal. It was so much more wide-ranging geographically and no less strategically important than the early Confederate victory at 1st Manassas. Arguably more so, given the action in the Shenandoah and down by the Rappahannock that preceded 2nd Manassas
For a civil war you think they would go low enough to attack a kitchen
hey man, those confederates are hungry
brilliant insights on why decisions were made
thanks Headhunter!
McClellan should have been court martialed for not helping Pope as ordered.
Little Mac screws up a golden opportunity, part 4!
who else but McClellan!
Most of my Civil War relic collection is from this campaign in August 1862. I have a few videos on my #CivilWarTimeMachine channel of my relic hunts at the “Battle of Thoroughfare Gap” and the Battle of the Fords” along the Rappahannock.
