- Hey Myco Family! I've been receiving so many messaged on Instagram and here on RUclips in regards to my first Grain TEK video and wanted to give an updated version to how im prepping my grain bags, as well as answer all your questions. With any profession or hobby, there are many ways to do anything, i never stop learning or refining my process. On this channel my intent is to give you all the things that have worked for me as well as give updates to my process as I continue to learn and grow as a mycologist.
The biggest updates in this video are that:
1. I no longer soak my oats for 18-24 hours.
2. I boil my oats for 25 mins.
3. I no longer line my Pressure Cooker with a towel.
I hope this is WAY easier for you because its WAY easier for me, I also hope that i answered a bunch of your questions! Thank you all for the continued support and have a beautiful day!

Hey brother man - a quick tip, you may want to throw that steam rack or a heavy plate on top of your bags. It’s just an added safety precaution in case a bag swells and plugs the release.
Or a wet towel wrapped around them
Yea accident waiting to happen
@@johnnyboysky2274 a wet towel is just as dumb.
I started using whole oats after watching your tutorials. I get 50lb bag for under $20 at my local feed store. Holy hell...my blue oyster lc ripped through those grains in 3 days. I had to store my spawn in the fridge to slow growth. Wasn't quite ready for the mycelium explosion. Thanks bro 🤘
newbie question, once i inoculate grain...and get heavy mycelium coverage...can i stall or delay it from fruiting ?? by putting in fridge or freezer?
@@markbattisti put it in cooler spot
I know "one year later".... But just curious glenn were you using wild bird seeds before?
I appreciate how real you are. Not afraid of pointing out your mistakes. We all are at different stages in this hobby and I would imagine the most experienced mycologists are making mistakes as well. It's part of the journey. The hobby is always evolving and new TEKS are being tried all the time. That's part of what makes the hobby fun and interesting.
You're style is refreshing. thanks Myco
You did a great job, here. Your depth of explanation was both approachable and enlightening without a lot of cruft. Well done.
Dont worry bro we love ur content
Awesome tek! Thanks for the info. The music looping over and over made my head want to explode but was well worth it
Good stuff 👍🏻 I ran this tek beside a no prep oat tek. Just add water and oats and cook. This out performed the no prep be a long shot. This method has much faster stronger colonization
Great, what vol of LC are you injecting into a 1L jar or 5L bag to get such rapid colonisation?
Laberatory grade scooper lol. dude I love your channel. Long time grower but still learning new things from your videos
What I like to do is use my 5 gallon bucket strainer/net just like you did here, but just pour dry grain in them, boil enough water to cover the grains, wait till the grain rises past the water(no boil) and use a wide metal strainer on top of another 5 gallon bucket.. once the grain pushes past the boiled water I take the netting out, set it on the metal strainer and wait till almost all water is done dripping out the net(about 10 mins or so).. then pour on a diy strainer I've built, put a fan over the grains. It gets rid of all the water on the outside of the grains, sometimes when there's too much water but it's still hot, water will pool at the bottom of the bag.. you need the inside of the grain soaked not the outside. Lil extra work but I swear by it. Great video brotha love your work🙏
You gotta leave that trivet or a heavy plate on top bro, those bags can swell, you can’t be absolutely sure the moisture content of the grains. At the very least swelling bags can mess up your cook popping the emergency purge valve or possibly explode all together. Love your channel though, keep up the good work! Mush luv!
I’ve read a few comments and a lot are .. “I love you content , “”BUT””..blah blah blah . Dude your shrooms look absolutely amazing and your sterilization and Attention to detail are probably better than 90% of your viewers so no need to pay attention to people telling you how you can do things better .... love your videos .. your shrooms look FIRE keep on doing you bro
thats a really poor attitude to have. We are all here to learn, including him!
It's true I noticed with popcorn the whole from where it was plucked are the first to colonize. When using LC the ends have growth before the sides. Nice observation.
Great content bro! I always love your videos... so informative!
I save my grain water. Let it cool and use it to water my garden. Plants love it, seeing way more production out of my fruit trees.
Good tip! Thanks!
I water my morel mushroom patches outside with the oat water for spring harvest
Leave the weight off the top until the saftey lock raises. It lets the air escape
This is soooo crucial! Letting your canner vent steam steady for a while before adding the weight is the only way to ensure proper pressure.
Thank you for your knowledge bro
That is the key, mistakes will happen but dont give up. I had 16 colonized B+ rice bags get mold on the top 10% of all 16. Just start over and learn
A Stainless steel wok ring works great as a riser for the bottom plate.
How long before/when do you seal the top of the bag? ❤️
You made this so much more easier lol my bags were soaked 🤣 going to make my plate like yours
I use brew bags also, but I clean, soak and boil them in the bag. This eliminates the pouring and potential of spilling hot water. Soak over night in a bag inside a bucket, pull the bag out and put it into boiling water. Once its time, pull the bag out iof the hot water and put it on a drain screen (or in a bucket as you have).
My learning from your stuff bro keep ot coming my G.Good vibez
50/50 millet and oats are the only nsns tek grain mix that works wonderfully.
I use the same brand. I would suggest to clean the grains first. But your right, they are cleaner than most grains!
Why clean them? It's all getting sterilized brodda
@@rustyvessel5086 I have found trash from the factory in it. Things from bugs to bottle caps. I should have said watch for shit in the bag lol. Your right, really not much of a need to clean it.
Awesome video
Blown out bags... I've seen it. Cooling your pressure cooker too fast causing the hot bag to expand inside. Letting the pressure cooker cool naturally via ambient temperature prevents this.
Where did you get that sock filter thing for your drain bucket?
When and what type of injection ports to you use with the bag ? And do you seal your bags ?
We're do you get your flow hood. Awesome content
How you just be touching the hot water n pans 😂
So after you pc, how would you seal them if you don't have a flow hood? I mainly work out of a sab for the time being.
Rookie catch-up: I only pressure’d my 3# oat bags for ninety minutes is it a disaster?
-after sterilization I opened the bag and fluffed from the outside then double sealed with my Food Saver. Did I infect them enough to start over?
-can grain bags that have issues ( like a hole, etc.) be re-sterilized or is it waste and start over?
Thanks, david
I did 20 and it worked great
How long do you pc the bags for?
Love the video, the music is a bit loud & distracting, definitely good vibes though ❤
Imo the space for the vent is unnecessary as the steam will rise through the openings in between the bags but hey I still keep coming back to this video for instruction so keep it up!
How are you sealing your bags?
What's the weight of the grain before the boil?
15 minute dry time sure seems short. This doesn't make the grain too wet?
Perfect every time for me 🤷🏻♂️
@@MycoTrophic Well, if it ain't broke don't fix it 👍
Thank you so much for your videos. They've definitely been useful in my cultivation journey. I was wondering, have you seen the spawn bag Tek that Midnight mushroom does? No cooking of the grains? If you have, I was wondering what you thought of it.
50/50 mix sorghum and oat 5lbs bag 1/2 tablespoon gypsum mix up good and then pressure cook insanely fast
Can i use this recipe for growing magic muchrooms as well?
Was there any water left if the pressure cooker after two hours? Most prestos have a minimum water line mark on the inside.
Bro awesome
That flow hood is a monster where you get the filter ?
Dumb question....is this just "grain" or "whole grain" or are the same for all intents and purposes here or different? Also.... bag brands again please? Or list them below in description? Thanks so much! Binge watching all the vids!!
The background music was very annoying
Very.
Last question, what weave of micron bag are you using to strain into the bucket?
I'm using the same kind and I can't get one bag or jar to take ive tried all kinds of different methods, but barley anything and I've been doing this for a year first time using oats tho believe it or not
Yessss!!! Thank you!
Whenever I try this method I end up with way too much excess water in the bag how are you getting such good results without letting the grains dry. Do you have to shake or use the bags immediately to redustribute water or are your bags losing the moisture during steralization and mine arnt?
The first few times you said 'hull', I thought you were saying 'hole' :)
Same here. I kept thinking what freaking hole?
You know when I was editing this I thought this might happen lol. HULL > hole. 😂
Have you heard about forced hydration ??
When do you inoculat it
8:01 good quality bags are named
where did you get you flow hood? also where you get your stainless table
Do you keep the husk on during the whole process or do they fall off
How long could one store these grain bags before inoculation? Could I do a bunch of these and store them (refrigerated, frozen, whatever) for an extended amount of time?
If done right they should be viable for at least 6 months
When did you add the gypsum?
Does the weight stay the same after you hydrate your grain? Just curious how much dry weight went into the pot
What size was the mason you used?
So what is your process to seal them from this point? Unwrap it and seal? Details appreciated 😊
It's sealed.
Seems like mushroom media website is off-line/my website browser blocked it
What kinda of pressure cooker do you have
Hey @ 2:38 what size mason jar is that? 16, 32, or 24? It's hard to tell.
i studied it for like 20 mins. compared it to amazon pictures. I think its 32oz
Quart
Didn’t you use to use rye berries?
Good video but the music is so repetitive
Wow nice ! For how many days that substrate can stay clean in that bucket :) ?
I never go longer than 8-10 hours 🤷🏻♂️
@@MycoTrophic u are smart :) but i had to hide my substrate in bucket for like 3 days while pasturizing , now smells a bit fermenting , i did not care so i mixed 2 . Xl 2100 cc growkit with it , hope it works xD
Lordddd is biggg 😉
@@My3elium how did it turn out?
what size bags are those?I got 3 t supposedly and they are Bigger.I tried to fold them for a freaking hour and couldn't get them right. They are bigger
What size mason jar?
What kind of flow hood are you using?
You used 10 jars of oats, can i put more into the pressure cooker? Im trying to mass produce. Tia!
Great video but the music is distracting
Wait, hold up, what's Super APE? About to start my first APE in a couple weeks.
Hi, don't the bags need to be sealed or is this happening during cooking?
I am also wondering this
@@Hunter-ui9cn I can tell you. The bags dont get sealed as during sterilizing gas evaporates out of them which could make the bags blast. During cooling down the bags shrink a bit like isolating tube which makes the folded bits of tve bag kind of stick together and if handled with care staying like that until sealing.
Great video, but that music was driving me nuts, lol
Do you vacuum seal your bags after putting the agar in it?
Also how much agar for one 3.5 pound bag?
Thank you, your videos are a great help.
He seals them but theres a microporous filter
100mm full colonized dish, NO vacuum
i have used 2 - 50 lb bags of organic, triple cleaned whole oats & every time it turns green.
any thought on that ?
I have followed every method I can find and it still turns out green, I have no problems using Rye, wheat or popcorn so its not a contamination in the air reason & i have also tried .5 and .22 filter bags, jars & even ziploc bags (I use ziploc bags with mushrooms all the time)
thanks for the vids & any tips
Look up how to do the vinegar treatment on them there is antifungal additives in those oats they have four animals and even humans
@@lifebehindtheselens 95% of the time when something gets contaminated it's improper sterile technique. To check if your pressure cooker is sterilizing correctly fill 1/4 of a jar with hydrated grains and put a normal lid on it, no micropore no syringe filter, just a normal lid, and screw it on tight. Then after cocking it don't open it just leave it be on a shelf somewhere with proper grain colonisation temp and see if it gets contaminated, if it does then either you didn't cook it long enough or there's a problem with your pressure cooker. If it didn't contam then it's your fault. Simple as that.
At the very least you shouldn't see any contam for 2 weeks.
@@lifebehindtheselens where to look up? Can you please provide the link, thank you
I would say sterile technique or dirty cultures 🤷🏻♂️
@@MycoTrophic i have over 40 cultures that are shipped all over north america & grown on other grains & wood based substrates, the 100% organic, triple cleaned oats grow trich every time.
so i am clear, only the oats get contam
Mush On Brudah!
Also… hear me out… you could have brought the water to a boil in the PC and then added the grains lol. Maybe there’s a reason you didn’t that I missed though. 😂
What’d you use to make the strain bucket man? That looks useful af. I make a mess with all my strainers.
I need this info as well
What is in his bucket is a 5-gallon paint strainer, I noticed also in a prior video he drills holes in the bottom of that bucket that has the paint strainer in it.
@@kevinfromcali7062 ahhh a paint strainer. I had no clue what that was thanks a ton homie
Wow Arthur, you asked that question five months ago I just watched it for the first time and you replied within five minutes, that's scary cool though I'm happy it helped I used to paint houses for a living.
Hey man so how is it grain bag sealed when you open it to break up spawn .
You seal the bag with an impulse sealer
Have you ever had a grain bag start turning white in one day?
Is the gypsum optional? Or can it be substituted for something else.
its completely optional. You dont have to substitute it for anything. The gain will work fine by itself. Its nice to have, but completely unnecessary. Hope this helps :)
Also now you can order smaller quantities of bags through Unicorn. They opened up a separate store for us broke boys
Might wanna do a update to this update and put a plate on top of them bags before that shit blows up
How do you seal the top of the bag?
Impulse sealer
Does the bag automatically seal the top when you pressure cook it?
No
He talks about what bags he uses @7:25
Did you let the pressure cooker eject steam out of the rocker stem for 10 minutes before putting the rocker on and letting it build pressure?
I've always heard that you're supposed to do that before building pressure in the cooker otherwise you aren't necessarily at the correct pressure
but if the rockers tipping back and forth isn't it at 15psi regardless?
Maybe someone could chime in on this hahahaha
If the rocker is moving around releasing steam then it’s absolutely at 15
Iv heard the same I just do 10 mins just in case
He said "unicorn bags" and "paul stamets bags"
I use that bag and it's was actually a bit dirty I washed/ drained triple the times lol
Throw a hotdog in the bag before pressure cooking. The mycelium appreciates a glizzy.
What size is your pressure cooker?
22 quart i think
Throw that spare trivit right on top of those grain bags and you got it. Good video good info even the talking out of the ass.lol
I'm ready for someone to host a multiple day seminar on cultivating mushrooms. Any volunteers? The videos are awesome but for me there is nothing equal to in-person learning.
Are you in CA?
Central oregon
You forgot to treat them with vinegar that's the number one important step is a vinegar treatment to kill all the added antifungal additives
No I actually didn’t forget, I just don’t do that lol 😉 great tip though.
Why didn't you just heat up the water to a boil in your pressure cooker instead of using another pot to heat up the water? Things that make you go hmmm
The video would be better without the music in the back ground.
What u fail to realize Neo, is that there is no spoon 🤯
