I still like getting the boxes but gotta say that I haven’t really loved the book selections this year. I feel like the add-on special editions are stronger. I’m going to give them both one more year but might cancel too. Waterstones editions are really good!!
Totally agree. Honestly, early access to the SEs is part of why I'm keeping the adult book from FL - but I have also been enjoying those more so it was easier to keep
I've been with Illumicrate since December. I've only gotten one box (basically the mandatory one you have to get when you're first accepted), but I've skipped every box since. The special editions are nice, the little trinkets are cool. But I quickly realized I could get 2-4 books I'm genuinely interested in for the same price as these box/book subscriptions that come with a single book that I may or may not be interested in.
I've been on FL waiting list for months, but I doubt I'll bite whenever a spot finally opens up. I'll probably drop/cancel my illumicrate sub as well.
That's fair enough. I think they're especially good when you're first getting into reading, as they introduce you to lots of new books and authors. Perhaps not so good for those of us who already have a TBR as long as our arms
@@sophiasthoughts this. I'm a fairly new reader (more I returned, I did read classics like Anne of Green Gables, Wuthering Heights, Pride & Prejudice and Anna Karenina etc in the past) and I've recently taken interest in the fantasy book genre. But as a new reader I find myself lost on what book to get when I stand in a bookstore. I just subscribed to illumicrate, let's see if the books are my cup of tea first.
@@kapiminger5352 it's a good plan! And exciting, getting back into reading and exploring what's out there is so fun
I cancelled my Fairyloot Adult sub a couple of months ago. Every title that I was truly excited about, waterstones had a special edition of.
Waterstones are definitely in the SE game now
Waterstones really are on their A game lately with their editions
Oh absolutely! For example, I actually liked their edition of In The Lives of Puppets thank the Fairyloot one
I switched my FL YA to book only last year and cancelled completely this year (after Divine Rivals!) and switched my Illumicrate to book only early this year (and also cancelled Afterlight). I have no regrets at all - it’s so nice to not have to find somewhere to put all the stuff every month!
Haha yeah that will definitely be nice! Plus my partner will be so glad that I will stop collecting mugs 🤣
@@sophiasthoughts THE MUGS! So many 😂
I just did the same last month. No regrets saying goodbye to FL. Hated the skip policy and the book picks this year.
@@saramm3765 I think I'll miss it a bit since it's been such a big part of my life and channel for so long, but it's the right move for me
I go back and forth on keeping my Illumicrate subscription. These books get EXPENSIVE lol, but the FOMO is still higher than my financial saviness lol I don't know how people do the full boxes with all the stuff, it seems like all the knick knacks would build up so fast
They really do. I sometimes regift items but yeah it was time to go book only on illumicrate
I'm getting kind of discouraged at how late my box always is. Edit: I canceled my Illumicrate subscription. September will be my last one.
I get that. I'm presuming you're outside the UK where I know it has been pretty bad for a while. It is frustrating
Thank you for sharing 🥰💕

I have Fairyloot YA box but recently i think about canceling it and maybe getting adult. Or that romance box (if they really will decide to make it). It was exciting and fun at the begining but now i only like few of the items they put in that box (usually the ones wich are practical and i can really use in my daily life - like mug or plate etc) and i think i'm outgrown YA books. I like how those books look, because in my opinion Fairyloot makes very beautiful special editions, but... i guess it's just not for me anymore. I'm still thinking but i guess till the end of this year i will make my decision.
It's definitely a tricky call to make!! And I agree, the editions are very pretty, it is hard to pass them up
