I grew up almost in the shadow of memorial stadium in Champaign circa, 60's. One cannot imagine the aura of those years when Butkus ruled. It was everything to grade school kids such as my self. Later in the 80's I sat next to him in the stands as he watched his nephew, Mark play the same position. He was gracious but fans just wouldn't let him watch. He went along with it & that impressed me. I did not bother him as I admired him too much. It was enough just to sit there & soak it all in. Dick will be missed as the end of an era gone by. Aloha.
He was the nos. #1 sports announcer here in in Chicago's Channel 2/ CBS every night. Late 1960's early 70's.. before a newspaper writer on the Chicago American I think
@@robertlosasso4222I thought he lost his job due to focusing, during the natl championship broadcast re Bama and ND, on the very good looking wife of AJ McCarron. If so, it's a shame. He meant no harm and caused none.
Everybody tuned into Monday night football in the 70's and 80's to hear Howard Cossell, Don Meredith, and Frank Gifford. That trio was pure magical. I can still hear ' Turn out the lights the parties over.' I really don't think those 3 will ever be replaced. The ratings for those 3 were incredible.
Brent was the voice of "The NFL Today" on CBS with Irv Cross, Phyliss George, and Jimmy the Greek back in my hey day of the 70's! Yipppeeeee m--f*ckers!!!!
Sadly, Dick never went to the playoffs and played on only two winning Bears teams, but he had one of the greatest one liners ever - owner George Halas, after a lousy Bears season, said the Bears were "three players away" from being contenders, and Butkus muttered, "Yeah, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost!" :-D
Grizzly bears 🐻 aren't considered "fast" but they will run a deer or racehorse down very quickly. Butkus had unprecedented Lateral Pursuit and sideline to sideline speed. His Teamate Ed O'Bradovich said: "Twenty yards this way..twenty yards that way...NO ONE WAS QUICKER!" Simply the best..Matt NYC
@@MIKECNW Illinois was later busted for a slush fund in the late 1960s. Pre-SMU payroll to keep you could say, just that SMU did it a whole lot better.
outstanding interview involving my favorite announcer and player bravo

Aloha.
He secretly respected that. Deep down he is just a guy like you and me.
They should rename CVS Butkus Vocational high school
Brent was the great leader in the booth. Was never the same without the Jimmy Greek and Howard Coselle. Great to hear you.
Didn’t Brent get arrested for molesting a woman ?

Good to hear Brent underated broadcaster my favorite as a kid
I wish Brent still did the Saturday game of the week. He and Gus Johnson are the best college football announcer all-time.
I didn't know he was still with us ..I remember brent as the local Chicago sports broadcaster on CBS.. he was a newspaper sports writer
Great stories! Thanks for sharing Brent.
RIP GOAT, no one will ever patrol and enforce the middle of the field like you 51
When I think of The Monsters of the Midway I think of The great Dick Butkus
I absolutely love the nonchalance when he says "He was okay and came back & played..." 😁

LOL Never heard that. Classic.
Yeah, I thought the same thing - in fact if I heard that and didn't know who said it, Dick would be on my ID short list!@@kentkearney6623
I’m now 60 always appreciated Brent 📺🏈👀❤️
Butkus was not “fast” per se, but could really go side to side and get back into coverage; had quite a few picks

Brent was so goofy he did not even mention he and butkus and irv cross were on the nfl today on cbs for years together im the 80s🤔
Brett, and butkus, irv cross all did pre game on cbs they where great. This was after jimmy the greek firing
My brother played with Butkus at Illinois . He told me every year Butkus magically had a new fancy car put in his private parking space .
How did he have that? To the best of my knowledge, he didn't come from a rich background.
@@MIKECNW Because Butkus was the best they had it was their way of paying him . Meaning Illinois .

The track was Balmoral in Chicago..easy giveaway
Hawthorne Racetrack
🙏🙏🙏😞
Butkus had a personality of a fried lobster.
He loved the vax and questioned those who chose medical freedom. Any questions now?
I've seen footage of Butkus playing, but is Brent exaggerating on him a bit?
Looks like he was doing the same with everyone he encountered.
