So many things. We all have the power to change our circumstances. Choice is a gift. Making yourself out to be the victim is also a choice but I personally feel it’s the cowardly way out. This documentary is somehow bias. I'm not denying the refugees were mistreated. I felt sorry for them. But I'm sure at 10:00, the officer was just making a joke on the reporters. Obviously, these officers are less articulate in the presence of camera and foreign media. English is not their first language. It's not fair to be used as if they were cynical and tried to cover up something. This is very good example of how foreign media could antagonistically portrays certain party from their perspective beyond local context. Take a look at some suburban areas in Malaysia or even KL. The life of the locals are struggling not much better than these poor refugees. Illegal immigrants related crime rates are serious. The locals were victimised. Even the Australian government knew this and they don't feel right to give further comments. Not to mention Malaysia is not the signatories of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, yet they still take this 'shit'. And now their compassion and hospitality are being taken for granted. I think the people commenting don't understand why they travel illegally, with limited resources, money and access for legal transportations they had NO choice but to resort to these methods, many people and these refugees travel because they are oppressed in their previous governments, and I don't think it's a horrible wrong idea to find a better life. The people there are kind & generous." So they landed here, with some estimates at close to 500,000. These were the "Boat People". Since 1975 then, there has been a neverending flow of PATIs making M'sia a place to find work. A place to call home. Most of the PATIs in this report wd have laid claim to the fact that they HAD TO FLEE, for fear of limb & life, i.e. they were asylum-seeking "political refugees". Like with most other countries, if you enter without papers, u r considered Illegal Immigrants (PATI) and will be treated accordingly. So there's no point for these PATIs to give war, ethnic strife or brutal oppression to explain or justify how they landed-up in my beloved Malaysia (M'sia). Not many people on this earth know that as early as the mid-1970s, M'sia started becoming a haven, a convenient, safe, interim port-of-call for Vietnamese refugees fleeing the Communist take-over in 1975. They had served their American masters, who fled and left them stranded. Some sneaked into Thailand, Laos and unsafe Cambodia. Somehow God whispered, "Go to M'sia. The people there are kind & generous." So they landed here, with some estimates at close to 500,000. These were the "Boat People". Since 1975 then, there has been a neverending flow of PATIs making M'sia a place to find work. A place to call home. Most of the PATIs in this report wd have laid claim to the fact that they HAD TO FLEE, for fear of limb & life, i.e. they were asylum-seeking "political refugees". But as any aid- worker wd confirm, at least 50.0 % wd actually be economic refugees. Seeking a better life elsewhere. So here they've got of to a bad start, by lying. Listening to these griping, complaining & bitching PATI ingrates I feel compelled to defend my fellow M'sians who had the unenviable task of caring for them. Hence plse give me the chance to raise the following issues : 1) YOU people sought out the human traffickers to help you escape. For a specified sum, traffickers umdertook to provide you with safe passage to AUSTRALIA, not MALAYSIA! YOU never bothered to enquire about AUSTRALIAN entry permits or visas beforehand. Did you imagine AUSTRALIA wd welcome you with open arms after a leisurely 3-day boatride?
