Zander Circuitry Cafetiere: Like a Harmonic Percolator that also does lattes and mochas

  • It's really down to luck that the Interfax HP-1 Harmonic Percolator wasn't forgotten decades ago. This was an ultra-indie job made by a chap in Milwaukee called Ed Giese, later lifted to mythical status by an association with Steve Albini.
Now, I like Albini because he's a maverick nerd (plus he recorded Tweez, Surfer Rosa and the first Owls album), but it seems he doesn't actually use Percolators much. Well, maybe if he had a Zander Cafetiere he'd find more use for it - because this thing goes way beyond simple clone status.
I don't even touch the gain and tone controls in this video - they're left at noon - but I hope you'll agree there are lots of unique and tasty distortion textures to enjoy here, not all of them fuzzy or splatty.
(Guitar is a Gordon Smith GS Deluxe Semi-Solid.)

Yes, the Cafetiere is less thick-sounding than other percolators I've tried.

Hey, nice riff. Not that I’m going to nick it but can you tell me what the chords you play between G and resolving back to D? Thanks

Oh man, now you're asking... first one is sliding up to a B flat, with the middle finger damping the A string and the index on the fifth fret of the G string, so it's 6xO56x. Then for the E flat you move the middle finger down to the A string and the index up to the D string, so it's x65O6x. And for the extra chord at 0:38, you keep that shape and slide up to the 11th fret for an A flat.

Please let me know if that makes sense - I'm not used to writing chords down!

Oh, I wish I could remember… basically I turned on about seven pedals at once, definitely including a Red Panda Particle.
