I thought the same once I saw Snoop Dog's cookbook in a white girl store. Great to see someone work so hard and achieve the best, settle down and begin side quests 🥳
You can imagine how excited I was when I realized that my wedding dress had pockets. One of the funniest parts of my wedding video is when I pulled a tissue out of my pocket and you can audibly hear all of the women in the room gasp.
The fact that the women on Team Theorists demanded a pockets episode at the announcement of the channel just goes to show how deprived of pockets we really are.
It's crazy that we went from "if you carry something, you're poor" to "if you don't carry something, you're poor". Just like we went from being pale meant you didn't have to work outside and you were wealthy, and now if you're tan it means you have the means to tan all day instead of working. It's a luxury.
As a man I have seen women buying clothes with pockets and then cutting them off and sewing the holes shut. So very clearly there a i huge demand for women's clothing without pockets. That's why it's made.
My sisters wedding dress was gorgeous and she got tons of complements on it. Her response to every single one was "Thanks! It has pockets too!". You couldn't tell they were there, but she happily showed everyone how they were hidden within as all the women were immediately as excited about the pockets in this dress as she was. Such a simple thing.
My dress for homecoming my junior year of high school had huge pockets in the skirt. I felt so helpful! I carried around all my friends’ wallets and keys all night.
I've noticed that multiple brands I buy from will often have a picture on a product page of a model putting her hands in the pockets just to show how functional they are. I've seen ads built around dresses having pockets. It's honestly kinda hilarious.
I remember as a kid shouting "IT HAS POCKETS" when my grandma gave me a new dress, I had it for a month and was at the mall when I finally noticed and everyone around us stopped and looked at me, a few women cheered and the men with them laughed.
when your friend is giving a fashion show of their new clothes and they try on a dress, and slip their hands into pockets and immediately you both yell “IT HAS POCKETS!!!.”
I did this with a skirt of mine just last year. Imagine a 25 year old standing in the middle of walmart just gasping and screaming "Mom! I have POCKETS!" to a woman three aisles over lmao
I recently discovered that one pair my brother’s pants has a pocket INSIDE another pocket. And it’s just as big. These are regular slacks. We were both so confused as I stood there in pants with FAKE pockets.
As a woman I had always believed that the reason why pockets on our pants just disappeared is because of the purse and handbag industry, I’m glad you guys did a style theory on this!
The question I’m asking is there are many fashion companies owned and managed by women, why don’t they make properly pocketed clothing if they want them so much?
@@InfernalBlizzard1715 one quick google search would have told you that only 15% of the 50 biggest fashion brands are owned by women. so basically they just don't have enough sway on the fashion industry as a whole.
There is something so wholesome about complimenting a woman on her dress only for her to give you an adorable smile and say "Thank you! It has pockets!" while putting her hands in said pockets. It's one of my favorite interactions to have with a stranger from both sides. I love my dress pockets, but it's always so fun to see that another woman has found yet another dress she loves that also has pockets.
Heck, I don't even wear dresses but even i find ones that have pockets cool whenever i see them. There've been multiple times when I'm in a clothing store and see a dress with pockets and just go "YOOOOOOOO NEAT!" in my head XD
I have literally stood in a bathroom looking up the dress that someone else was wearing while they helped. It was one of those "I love your dress" "thanks it has pockets!" "REALLY?" "Yeah, [store name] for [price]" interactions.
I (36F) needed black dress pants for a retail job a while back. I went to like 15 stores looking for a pair that was A) durable enough to last more than a few weeks, B) made of a fabric that wouldn't pick up dust or lint specks if you looked at it wrong, C) had pockets deep enough to hold a box cutter and a sharpie without them falling out when you crouch to pick things up (I took my box cutter with me while shopping to check), and D) didn't wrinkle easily. I ended up having my retired military dad take me to the closest Navy exchange and buy me a pair of *their* women's dress slacks (I paid him back of course). I took those pants to a local dry cleaner to get them tailored to fit me and pockets added. They didn't have any pockets at all by default, but it turns out tailors can generally add stuff like that to almost any pants that aren't skintight. For not as expensive as you'd think. It cost me like $100 all in all (pants + tailoring and this was like 8 years ago so it'd probably be more now), but those pants fit me perfectly without needing a belt, looked great, had wonderful pockets, and lasted me several years even though I didn't go easy on them. Zero regrets.
I remember being in line at an attraction at Disney World and saw my wife pull something out of her dress pocket. I blurted out "woah that dress has pockets that's so cool!" When the lady in front of us told my wife I was a keeper I didn't really get it but my wife laughed about. Now I know why it was a big enough deal for them to have that exchange.
Yeah, that exactly happened with my prom dress it had a pockets and I didn’t even notice and it was the best surprises ever. All the girls were so jealous of my pocket dress. I could hide so many snacks and my phone without needing a bag, life changer.
Yup, can confirm. When a piece of women's clothing has _functional_ pockets it is genuinely one of the most happy/exciting finds on an entire outfit. For most of high school I straight refused to wear "women's" clothes because it just wasn't practical or cost effective; I could go to the men's section, get better quality clothes for a MUCH better price. For pants I just re-stitch the bottoms so they don't drag (and double perk was it is far less of a puzzle trying to find the right size!). Nearly all of my shirts to this day are from the men's section because they get the comfy thick cotton rather than the itchy thin (nearly see through) cotton and I'm spending at _least_ half as much for the same, if not better, shirt.
Usually, I just like to modify the men’s clothes when I get home to attach it to how I like it. Too baggy? Modified! (Side note: please make sure you watch out for your sizes. (And width) I sometimes accidentally make it too tight
I got a dress from a charity shop and it is one of my favourites simply because of the pockets. The pockets go from hip to mid thigh! I never need to take a bag with me!
I'm fully with you on this. Women's clothes almost feel suffocating while men's clothes actually feel like they're letting you breathe. I also don't really like the flashy style most women's clothing has.
Yeah, who wants to carry a purse or leave their purse somewhere unattended while dancing? Where would women put their keys, phone, or essentials. Plus, public phones have diminished. And not everyone drives to be able to keep things in their car. Citynerd talked about how he didn't drive to a Walmart and they wouldn't let him in cause he was carrying a backpack. They told him to put it in his car. Which he didn't have.
My mom literally makes my family dresses with the biggest built in pockets she can manage, you can't even see them but when I told my friends, they shoved their phones in my dress and we all celebrated
I am so glad that you covered this. I, and every woman I know, has been complaining about this for *years* and I keep hearing things like, "That's not true," "women don't WANT pockets or women's clothes would HAVE pockets," or (the bane of my personal existence), "just buy MEN'S pants; boom, problem solved." I cannot fully express the sheer and utter horror I felt not four years ago when I was looking for work pants and came across a pair of women's cargo pants with decorative pockets.
Anyone who says to "just wear men's clothing" has never felt the pain of not being able to pull your pants up past your knees because your hips and thighs are dummy thick. Or the equally terrible feeling of going up a size or two and having the pants sag because of your waist/hip ratio
@@magnus6609 Get the bigger size and go to a tailor. I discovered that tailors aren't that expensive for regular tailoring (not having to do with weddings or events)
Fun fact, one day I saw a comic that joked about fitting a newborn into a man's pocket. My wife and I decided to carefully see if we could fit my then newborn daughter snugly into it. And yes, it was just big enough. I have carried the entire contents of my wife's purse in my pockets, I used to go on band trips with my phone, wallet, keys, 2 NintendoDS snacks, etc. in them. I also wore carpenter jeans with the extra side pockets, but the fact remains that men's pockets are SIGNIFICANTLY bigger. Even my son had pockets when he was 4 that could carry my wife's flip phone completely, but her pockets could not.
Ruining your childhood 1 Ruining your childhood 2 Ruining your recipes Ruining your fashion sense He really has ruined a lot of our lives, I am here for it.
I'm so happy that someone is talking about this. I have been trying to explain my frustration with women's pockets to my male friends, but they never understood its importance. Thank you Matpat.
I've even been ridiculed for putting my phone in my back pocket. I was told I should put it in my front pocket. Excuse me, where?? My front pockets fit a single key, maybe. If the pants I happened to be wearing that day even had front pockets in the first place. So then I complained about womens pants never having big pockets and I was told to just buy men's jeans. Gosh, if only I fit those. Men's jeans fall of my waist
Yeah, My husband never understood why I would give him everything to hold (I hate purses, my clothes should have enough space for keys, wallet and phone. Sorry) and I'm like you can't fit a hand in my pant pockets let alone anything else. He inititally didn't believe me but then tried and realized how true it was. Meanwhile his pockets go from his waist to mid thigh.. c'mon now.
@@firasal-tell How does a high heel being sharp sexist against men. It’s not sexist at all and can be used as a weapon against anyone. Also, a knife is better and using a shoe as a weapon is useless.
I recently, just for the heck of it, tried on a pair of men's jeans. And to my utter shock and surprise was overcome with anger because of the following two things: 1. Men's jeans fit my hips and waist way better than any women's jeans ever did, and I've got a bit of a curve to myself 2. I could fit my hand well past my wrist into the front /and/ back pockets Needless to say, I've bought those jeans. And multiple other pairs. They're my favorite jeans now. If you're a woman thinking about trying on men's jeans just for the heck of it, do it. You might be a bit limited in terms of sihlouette, color and accessorization, but otherwise, men's jeans are just superior. Try them on, and marvel at just how comfortable jeans can be.
You've summed up exactly why 98% of my pants and shorts are mens' styles. I own one pair of women's skinny jeans for certain occasions, and one pair of short-shorts for those especially balmy summer days here in Florida and because my boyfriend likes them. Neither have significant pockets. My men's pants all have pockets for days.
Once my boyfriend tried to make me stylish and gave me one of his jeans... that was the moment when I realised that how much more pocket space and freedom of movement these give... now I refuse to wear women's jeans and I only have one pair for serious occasions like exams or job interviews
@@ewellynn122 Plus the sizing is so much more consistent, since the numbers indicate actual literal measurements. Not like women's clothes, which are just arbitrary numbers decided by some committee and rarely consistent across brands. I'm anywhere between 6-10 buying pants, and can be XS-L for tops.
13:02 I agree Mat in high school I had a history teacher that would by male jeans and dresses with pockets because “ if everyone buys male pants and dresses with pockets the women fashion company will be scrambling to fix an issue that shouldn’t exist”
@@jypsridic Sure, but, and this might sound crazy, men's clothes aren't made with the female form in mind. Ever tried wearing a unisex shirt? In trying to appeal to both men and women, they just end up looking like you're wearing a paper shopping bag. Women should have stylish options that are form-flattering and has pockets. Buying men's clothing is simply settling and doesn't solve the problem.
I had 3 pairs of jeans that drove me crazy because of tiny, useless front pockets. Started to get rid of them. But then my brain woke up. I simply cut the bottoms off the inside fabric of the pockets and added extensions cut from scraps of fabric. (It didn't matter what color scraps I used, because they were inside where they didn't show.) Now I have deep pockets and the jeans were saved from a landfill.
Yup. Had to get a blazer for work recently and whaddya know? No pockets. Which would be fine except no slacks I could find had pockets either. Ffs I don't know how I'm supposed to work without pockets, it's not like I can carry a purse around. So I mutilated an old pair of men's slacks and did a pocket transplant. Now you can't even tell the difference. :D
I've seen pants where they even HAVE full size pockets but they're sewn shut... and in a permanent stitch too. You can finagle them loose if you're really careful but man... what an insult.
@@vectorwolf I've gone across that too with pants! But, a seam ripper and a needle and thread later, I had real pockets. I had the same issue with my je a's n jacket. Worse though. We hen I ripped the seam, the pockets were huge and had hidden pockets. Why not promote that?
I was just passing by the woman’s section of a clothing store when this group of girls came in and just sort of split up to look for their own clothing. I then hear one of them say “Hey! These pants have deep pockets!” And I kid you not, all of them came running to where she was in a hurry.
THANK YOU for doing an episode on this!! I've always been one to carry alot on my person when out and about, and I always knew women's pockets sucked, however I didn't realise how bad it was until I began wearing men's pants and was SHOCKED at the amount of stuff I could carry with room to spare.
When two of my girls got their first dresses with pockets at age 3 they were super excited. That’s how deep the problem of pockets goes. Their 5 year old brother had pockets in his pants and they never did. Seriously, my 6 month old nephew had functional pockets in his pants and my 3 year old girls’ pants didn’t. Ridiculous.
I mean, I do belive that at these ages, you (or your companion) are the one to buy the clothes. So, why didn't you buy pocketed clothing sooner? Are the more expensive? Isn't it possible to sew pockets onto existing clothes? I don't know one bit about that matter, so my question are plain candid, I don't even know your country.
@@mylittleparody2277 there were not options for pocketed clothing sooner for girls. There are functional pockets in the pants for my infant boys, but not for my infant girls. The pockets in my boys’ clothes at 5 years old are much bigger than the options for my girls’ clothes at the same age and size. It’s ridiculously sexist. Adding pockets to clothing is not in my skill set. Build a house from the foundation up? That I can do, but sewing doesn’t come as easily to me.
@@lmw716 Well, yeah, clothing is sexist. Historically, it's one of the way to discern gender, so that's normal that men and women clothing are different. As for why women/girl don't have pocket, that's an other question. I know that in some place of the world, consumer's group are powerful. maybe seek for one and write a letter/contact clothing manufacturer? Each one have it's skillset. It's awesome that you can build a house from the fundation!
Sometimes I put my toddler in an outfit that has more functional pockets than my own (because I stupidly assumed the pockets on the pants I was buying myself were real and not just decorative, ugh).
@@TheLionPear Ugh I hate that. There is no worse feeling then trying to put your phone in the pocket of a new pair of jeans only to have it slip right past a ledge of useless extra fabric.
I would love an episode about inconsistent sizing, which mainly happens with bras but also jeans (and pretty much everything else, realistically). For women's clothing, it's almost a requirement to try the items on when buying jeans because you can have two of the same exact pairs of jeans (brand, style, everything) and they'll fit differently. This is likely due to the manufacturing process, but I _hate_ trying on clothing in-store. Why is creating consistent and universal sizing so difficult?
What sucks is that men have better sizing. For example pants; women have numbers like 4 or 6 which is arbitrary whereas men get stuff like 34x42 or something, giving the waist size and the length of the leg. Why can't they do something for woman pants? But to your point yes, it's crazy that you can be a small in one brand's clothes but be a large in another brand.
Vanity sizing! Expensive cloths for "older" ladies will make you think you need a smaller size so you feel better buying them. But yeah, size seems to be pretty random.
My fiance likes to tease me about how I react to dresses with pockets. I'll always, without fail, yell out "OH MY GOD! POCKETS!" He finds it hilarious while every female I know immediately asks where I bought it because they want one. Pockets are a luxury for women, and we get adorably excited when we find something cute with them. I actually really like that you did this video. It shows all our struggles with pockets in a very educational way.
@@myrablacktail2403 If you choose aesthetics over function that's fine, but stop complaining that companies are making clothes that place aesthetics over function, it's what you're demanding in the only way that matters. Also, your pants don't change how pretty you look.
I knew someone who had her wedding dress tailored to have pockets, and honestly when I saw her pull out her vows from her pocket I exploded with happiness. I mean, sure yeah, i was also happy that she was getting married, but GIRL HAD POCKETS IN HER WEDDING DRESS
@@ThroughGrace88 As someone who's shifted to wearing men's jeans FOR the pockets, I totally get why it was never a thought. It's crazy to see how gender has defined the evolution of clothing!
I'm a woman who loves pockets since I was 5! So I used to wear my dad's outfits as a kid for pockets. As an avid pocket lover, I appreciate this theory to teach me the history of it. I always aimed to buy pants with decent sized pockets as I love to place my whole wrist in it when I go out during cold weather.. (My hands get cold very quick on cold weather).
This video is my wife's favorite thing right now. She loves fashion/clothing history and knew a little bit about the history of pockets. She delighted in telling me little extra tidbits and facts throughout the video. This is gonna be a great channel and congrats on the million subscribers already!

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, not only do we get another great channel from the theorist team (whom I adore for all the hard work they do to not only keep us entretained but also helps us learn about everything) but we also get the answer we were all waiting to get "WHY ARE WOMEN'S POCKETS SO SMALL OR FAKE?"
Funny true story. I went to buy clothes with my wife, and she was looking on some skinny jeans. She lends and asks what I think about it, first thing I do: reach for the pockets. I was mind blown when I found there was no pocket, even though the lines where there, I ask: "What about the pockets?", she replies "What pockets? Women pants don't have pockets!" And I was: "WTF?"
@@CiciChessbuy men's skinny jeans. It might be slightly more comfortable for you. If you have small-ish thighs that is. For larger thighs, still use men's jeans, just buy some larger ones.
Words cannot describe how happy I am that you mentioned the purse industry's part in small pockets, I've literally been saying that for years. Also, a possible style theory idea: Is it possible to make an outfit or clothing item that can easily tear away, like they do in spy movies and cartoons? Something to think about. EDIT: Okaay apparently I'm the only one who wasn't aware tearaway outfits are a thing in real life. IDK, I always thought it was some sort of film secret.
yeah they have "magic" performances where that's all they do. look up "clothes change magic". It falls under the category of magic although not really being a magic trick, it's more of a performance.
Also, back when I was a kid I owned a pair of flared sweat pants that could “rip away” into a pair of long shorts lol. They were either snap buttons or a zipper… I think you zipped them off!
When I was younger, I noticed that most of the women at my church were wearing dresses or skirts despite the freezing winter. I asked my mom to buy me some pants for church (specifically with deep pockets) and I felt so proud walking into the building wearing my brand-new pants with pockets.
I bought my first pair of jeans from the men's section last week and I am furious about what levels of euphoria I was missing out on all my life. Truly outrageous!
Truly! I ONLY but pants in the mens section! I bought some SHORTS in the mens section that had pockets that I could fit my SWITCH in, my whole Nintendo switch in a pair of SHORTS and you couldn't even tell they were THERE.
Look I’m 16 and I’ve been only buying male pants for years, their pockets are bigger, the waist is higher, and their looser on your legs honestly I hate the modern trend of women liking tight pants. My women’s pants size was like XL but my male size is M. So welcome to the club of women buying male pants we’re happy to welcome you
the only problem with men's jeans as a women is all the chafing in the thighs! and the fact that to get a size ANYWHERE near your waist size, you need to be up at the crack of dawn!
I found that recently, big pockets are coming into style for women because of the baggy pants fashion trend that is coming into style. I used to never have pockets on any of my pants, now big baggy and pocketted pants are all I own. Its even in my dresses, I literally only buy dresses with pockets now. Companies are definitely catching on
A lot of those "baggy" jeans are really nothing more than the same fit as a pair of men's standard straight-leg jeans. Aka, the practical, comfortable ones. I'm glad you finally have them, I'm just sad they're considered special.
@@Just_A_Dude I agree mostly with your sentiment, but I can tell you they are not quite the same fit. I can not wear men's jeans, I have actually tried before. It's the one reason I've always bought women's jeans and suffered the small pockets, because I did not have a choice.
@@Arissiah Sorry, to clarify, I don't mean _actual_ men's jeans. I mean the ones some brands call "boyfriend jeans." They're fitted to a female figure, but have the more relaxed proportions typical of men's "working" denim.
Pockets are simultaneously the best and worst thing in women's clothing depending on what type of clothing you're wearing... In jeans they're ridiculously small, in leggings they're notoriously non-existent, and in dresses they're the first thing you loudly proclaim the second someone compliments the dress (the fabulous "THANKS IT HAS POCKETS!!!" moment). I've always wanted to know the backstory about women's pockets, this was an excellent theory to start with!! I hope that he does an episode on the frustration of bra sizing someday. That's another similar issue with women's clothing 🤣
In all the pants I have worn, I have almost NEVER had pockets. Also, how exciting is it when you find pockets in your dresses? I don't wear dresses that much, but I am still excited when I find pockets in dresses
While I agree with the bra thing, I hope that that episode would include steph to give a personal account of someone who actually has to deal with this problem daily.
Cool new channel! I'm a small fashion brand and I love putting pockets in my designs, I'm even starting to make portable pockets. I love the cargo trend because of this.
Actually a pocket opening in skirts using the tie-on pockets were like in every skirt, so it was actually pretty easy to use them. Not to mention the skirt were often pleated and thus hid the opening really well. Even well into the edwardian era this way of hiding pockets were used to great effect. Not to mention, victorian pockets were MASSIVE. So if anything the pockets started becoming smaller after the 1910s. Bernadette Banner has a great video about the evolution of women's pockets
FINALLY! Someone's talking about it. I'm really annoyed with this pocket problem, to the point where I'm tempted to modify my own pants! I miss wearing my brother's old pants just because of the pockets. I could fit multiple packets of chips in them, and NO ONE WOULD KNOW! I was so happy to have a pocket in my matric dress, my brother had to tell me to calm down. I couldn't get over it!
I will never get over the excitement I get when I instantly check if any dresses I'm given have pockets. The audible gasp upon finding them and then the slightly higher pitch in tone as I exclaim "It has pockets!!!!" and then putting my hands in said pockets to enjoy for a few seconds. Sadly with some that I have currently, even if they fit my whole hand they are wide and if I put my phone in them and sit down my phone flls out, but I still love having them. :3
I've been ranting about pockets (or lack thereof) in women's clothing for decades! My strategy was to basically dress in men's pants that fit me in flattering outline or coats and jackets that had capacious storage. I am happy to see that designers seems to be paying attention these days. Thank you for the historical context!
Abby Cox has a couple of recent videos about purses and the pockets. Really great stuff if you're really geeky about history. I think she mentioned how the fall of pockets due to the rise in popularity of the purse could also be correlated to the rise of the modern cosmetics industry - i.e. preference to carry cosmetics in a purse vs pockets as you can change a bag much easier than you can rip out a pocket and sew a new one in should there be an accident with cosmetic pigments.
when I was younger, I got these new pants and you cannot describe how excited I was when I figured it out. literally screamed “MOM!! IT HAS POCKETSSS!!!”
It's really cool to think that I was there within the first couple of years of game theory, right at the beginning of film theory, food theory, and now style theory. Long live the theorist community!
The "Nice outfit!" "thanks it has pockets" convo has happened many times with me, I only own one dress with pockets and that's because it was modified TwT
The joy some of my classmates and I have felt upon finding PROM DRESSES with POCKETS is crazy! Thanks for giving this frustrating topic a spotlight on the new channel
YEAH RIGHT? When i went prom dress shopping I immediately fell in love with a dress and then the girl helping me said "oh it has pockets". I immediately screamed "OMG POCKETS!!". Needless to say that as the chosen one.
Thank you MatPat! This has always been an issue for me and why I prefer men’s blazers and pajama bottoms. My theory is that they remove pockets so we buy more purses! Pockets should NOT be exclusively decorative. They should be utilized! In seam pockets in dresses are a miracle at this rate. We need REAL pockets! Edit: I KNEW IT!
I’m so hyped to have been here since before the beginning of food theory, style theory AND film theory, watching you guys grow up with me has been absolutely amazing, I’m glad you were a part of my childhood
The way petticotes were made and tied on meant there was always a slit to access your pockets. Those giant pockets are my favorite part of historical dress and they're convenient as long as you wear them between the top two layers
I love that this is one of the first videos on this channel! One of the many reasons MatPat & Steph are my favorite RUclipsrs. The whole pocket thing just isn't fair, and I don't even carry a lot of stuff around with me. And, yes, my eyes got a little teary at 13:21.
Here's some facts about chatelaines, they are the predecessor of keychains. They only held your more useful tools [keys, watches, writing tablets like dance cards, for example, that you need to be out and ready so you don't have to dig into your pockets. Chatelaines as well shown a person in charge, the clinging of the sound of the chains basically told them "I am the matriarch of the household and you better focus on me." I also would recommend you to if you're looking for facts in the Victorian era you can look for Bernadette banner, and the other fabulous dress historians around that court of RUclips. she is quite the expert on the story of corsets, as she was a corset wearer ever since she was young to help combat her scoliosis issues.
I found the holy grail of “it’s got pockets” when I found a wedding dress with pockets! I was already in love but throw in pockets and it’s game over. Gonna have a lot of fun running around showing everyone my pockets like the totally mature and fully grown woman I am 😉
Honestly those pockets are the best thing about that wedding dress, and I mean, that thing can have real diamonds dripping off of it and the pockets would still be the selling point!
As a guy- I’ve been complaining about the lack of pockets in my wife’s clothes for years. And only partly because it means she keeps making me hold things for her. Usually keys.
chatelaines were more like a modern day keychain, lanyard or carabiner, and were most often used by working women. attachments could include any number of useful small household objects, like scissors, keys, thimbles, watches, magnifying glasses, and more. the fancy victorian version of a dad belt!
Lmao thank you for explaining why we always excitedly exclaim “thanks! It has pockets!” It’s not secret girl language- we just don’t get them often!!! 😂
My pockets are so useless I made a belt pouch. Initially it was for the renaisannce faire so I didn't have to reach under my gambeson, which breaks immersion. Then I realized despite its tiny size, it was HANDY. I could carry keys, a couple credit cards and dollar bills, and a mini hairbrush. Then I took my purses and added extra holes to the straps so I could sling them round my waist and hips. I may make a bigger pouch sometime.
My wife was excited that dress pockets came back over the last couple years. Sun dresses are my big love in women's fashion so I was right there with her in the excitement when she wore sun dresses with pockets. Viva la pocket revolution!
I was in a murder mystery game and at the end when the guy pulled me into the room to ask me what I thought happened I was sitting there rubbing my hands against the dress and all of a sudden I gasped. He got all excited and said “Did you figure it out!” My response “My dress has pockets!”
Do you have a fashion historian on your team? Cuz that line of "if you were lucky, you had a slit in your dress" makes it sound like you didnt... I highly recommend getting one or becoming friends with some of the youtube fashion historians like Bernadette Banner or Karolina Zebrowska
This is the theory that really sold me on the Style Theory concept! 🎉 Thanks for bringing this issue up. I’ll add that one of the worst things about pockets in women’s clothes right now is fake pockets! They’re everywhere! Where they have a seam where one should be, but it’s sewn shut with no actual pocket underneath. That’s just adding insult to injury!
The one thing I really hate is fake pockets. I remember buying a pair of shorts only to find that the pockets had been sewn shut, I rip the stitches out. Why would they give it pockets and render them useless? The shorts didn't last as long but I had pockets!
You might gain some insight on this in a quote from Christian Dior, the founder of the Dior brand: "Men have pockets to keep things in. Women, for decoration." Really progressive fellow there.
there is a difference between fake pockets that don't exist and pocket that are bast stitched for shipping and anti shoplifting purposes. you had the latter, as the former wouldn't have anything there even if you did rip stitching out.
My husband and I were LITERALLY discussing this earlier today! I had on a denim skirt that my phone barely fit in and he said it’s so I’d have to buy a purse
Congrats Matt on filling out the fourth channel's place The Great Theory Wheel, but also hearing "Hello internet, welcome to style theory" i'll never get used to 😂
Recently some brands have started making their pockets bigger in women's clothing. I have joggers with massive pockets and even pajama pants with pockets I guess so I can store my midnight snacks. We're thankfully moving in the right direction.
I was literally sorting my dresses the other day trying to figure out which ones to get rid of, and almost every dress that had pockets in it I kept. Pockets are so convenient for women's fashion. Sometimes, we don't have the perfect purse for the 'fit and just want to use our pockets for carrying our valuables in. A lot of the times though the pants we own don't have those massive pockets that men's do. There is huge appreciation for this episode. Excited for more of this channel's content.
honestly this always bugged me and seemed so damn unfair that my girl friends all had these false pockets whilst wasting the effort to sew it in, it's nice to have a history lesson on why and more importantly why it's still happening and I'm glad that there's efforts and companies pushing to change that , equalizer being man purses but we got fanny packs and messenger bags already so it's uneven, give ladies their pockets back!!
THANK YOU FOR POINTING THIS OUT!!! (whenever pockets of any kind come up, my brother yells "Y'ALL HAVE PURSES - I wish I had a purse" and it leads to a HUGE argument, though, he never actually takes it up with a man who would object to it - namely his dad) (never minding the difference between a purse and a messenger bag, when we're actually talking about the latter - my apologies for ranting, but could your parents please adopt me so you can be my brother instead?)
i got some overalls for christmas last year, and aside from it being made from corduroy and being super soft and comfortable, it had these MASSIVE pockets. i love it. they fit literally everything
My mum told me that her grandmother, who would have been alive late 1800s-early 1900s, got in huge trouble with her family and basically disowned for refusing to wear skirts and instead choosing to wear her riding pants out and about. Probably partly because of pockets, but the women on her side of the family definitely kept that fiery Scottish defiance through the generations even after coming to Canada long before. My mum's own mother lied about her age and said she was 16 when she was 15 so she could go to university in the 1940s. I was told she was set to help work on Canada's first computers when she met my grandfather and had to give that up to travel with him for his first year of work as a doctor up north treating the native communities there. She had been gifted a full seal skin outfit by the locals, but when she went back to Toronto because she was pregnant she donated the items to a museum because they would be damaged by the warmer climate. I wish she had kept something, even a pair of mittens
I wonder if my great grandmother was the type to hide weapons in her pockets. I know she had been part of the suffragette movement and wouldn't put it past her to carry something for self defense
I grabbed my school laptop, just shoved it in my Jean pocket and walked into the next class. Meanwhile, there was a girl in that class that had a phone that was half in the pocket. It was hilarious, like this computer was fully submerged to my blue jeans
I would like to point out that the title of this channel is "Style Theorists" meaning that it doesn't only have to be about clothing... it could be about architecture, it could be about how someone writes, it could be about practically anything... in other words... whether realizing it or not, MatPat made a way for him to keep this channel alive even when he runs out of ideas involving clothing
I’m so, so glad this is being talked about! I’m sick to death of having to hunt through the store, sticking my hands into the “pockets” to see if they go past the first digits ( and I have small hands!) or even exist at all, and then pay more for the privilege. And a huge thanks as well for showing me the companies that actually include functional pockets! Will definitely be checking them out!
I am a massive space nerd, and a trans man who is not out yet (so yes, I have experienced the suffering of small pockets). As a gift, a relative of mine got me a NASA jacket from their official store, a jacket that is unisex. The pockets are MASSIVE. I can fit my Switch in there. I was never more excited in my life than when I discovered the sheer size of those pockets
I hope that when you come out (if you do) your family accepts you, and if they don’t, I do! Also, if you want you could buy a chest binder so you can hide your chest, and wear long shirts, tie the front of the shirt, and stuff it in your pants. It might help? It usually only has a slight bulge on my male days (im genderfluid). You might need to shift it around, but I hope this helps with feeling more comfortable with your body!

There is something so wholesome about complimenting a woman on her dress only for her to give you an adorable smile and say "Thank you! It has pockets!" while putting her hands in said pockets.
Sir, you have no idea how deep this goes, and props to your wife for choosing wisely. 👍

I recently, just for the heck of it, tried on a pair of men's jeans. And to my utter shock and surprise was overcome with anger because of the following two things:
1. Men's jeans fit my hips and waist way better than any women's jeans ever did, and I've got a bit of a curve to myself
2. I could fit my hand well past my wrist into the front /and/ back pockets
Needless to say, I've bought those jeans.

IDK, I always thought it was some sort of film secret.
tearaway outfits do exist. They generally have a front and a back that are velcro'd together like a sandwich.
yeah they have "magic" performances where that's all they do. look up "clothes change magic". It falls under the category of magic although not really being a magic trick, it's more of a performance.
It was my own supposition, as well, and this video just proved it.
Yea, they exist. Idk what they’re called but are often used in movies when i a character has to rip off clothing

Companies are definitely catching on
MY BAGGY JEANS ARE THE ONLY JEANS I HAVE THAT CAN CARRY MY STUFF
I don't wear dresses that much, but I am still excited when I find pockets in dresses
in jackets they're either really bad and things fall out or absolutely massive and ugly :')
While I agree with the bra thing, I hope that that episode would include steph to give a personal account of someone who actually has to deal with this problem daily.
If you’re wanting to know, sweats usually have pockets
@@lazybee8201 yeah but you couldn't really wear those to dinner
I love Banner's videos.
my school uniform had pockets on a pleated skirt.
@@juliachristine6290 ours didn't, but a lot of girls sewed some on anyway. In my case, I always had the gym jacket on my waist, even in summer 😂
This is why i like overalls 😂😂😂😂

I love abby

I once bought a dress for a wedding, and when I found out that they had pockets I squealed and walked over to my friend and screamed “IT HAS POCKETS!”
This whole "small/fake woman pocket" thing has gotten so bad that it's not even pants anymore, it's jackets too💀

Dude, I get so excited when I go to the store, and find pockets in the dresses! It's wonderful being able to look pretty while have pockets.
Also, when someone wearing a dress says, "Thanks, it has pockets!!" That is a beautiful, pure form of joy.

Chatelaines as well shown a person in charge, the clinging of the sound of the chains basically told them "I am the matriarch of the household and you better focus on me."
I also would recommend you to if you're looking for facts in the Victorian era you can look for Bernadette banner, and the other fabulous dress historians around that court of RUclips. she is quite the expert on the story of corsets, as she was a corset wearer ever since she was young to help combat her scoliosis issues.
I found the holy grail of “it’s got pockets” when I found a wedding dress with pockets! I was already in love but throw in pockets and it’s game over. Gonna have a lot of fun running around showing everyone my pockets like the totally mature and fully grown woman I am 😉
I have complete respect for this and would 100% do the same. Also yes, show EVERYONE those pockets!!!!!
Usually keys.
me: FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABT POCKETS
matpat: i just realized it was an issue
me: seriously? SERIOUSLY!
chatelaines were more like a modern day keychain, lanyard or carabiner, and were most often used by working women. attachments could include any number of useful small household objects, like scissors, keys, thimbles, watches, magnifying glasses, and more. the fancy victorian version of a dad belt!
Man, I didn't even know that about pockets. Also, Pistol Pockets?! Matpat's giving me more education than my own school. This guy should be a teacher
Using the Game Theory to Style Theory pipeline, gamers will finally have drip
I was in a murder mystery game and at the end when the guy pulled me into the room to ask me what I thought happened I was sitting there rubbing my hands against the dress and all of a sudden I gasped. He got all excited and said “Did you figure it out!” My response
“My dress has pockets!”
Thanks for bringing this issue up.
They also exists in men fashion. Not to the likness of men.
there is a difference between fake pockets that don't exist and pocket that are bast stitched for shipping and anti shoplifting purposes. you had the latter, as the former wouldn't have anything there even if you did rip stitching out.

You can wear men stuff without modifying your body btw. The onyl importent thing to appear male is the body shape mostly. You know, the "V" shape.
I hope that when you come out (if you do) your family accepts you, and if they don’t, I do! Also, if you want you could buy a chest binder so you can hide your chest, and wear long shirts, tie the front of the shirt, and stuff it in your pants. It might help?
