    What is Gil talking about (5:03)? The Lakers didn't go to the Western Conference Finals two years in a row before Magic arrived. They lost in the First Round then Semis the two years prior. That was Seattle vs Denver (1978), Seattle vs Phoenix (1979). The Lakers last went to the Western Conference Finals in 1977 and went to the NBA Finals in 1973 (and lost). Magic arrived in 1979-80 season. They were by no means a dynasty when Magic arrived. They were a 47 win team the year prior.

    • @emmapeel38
      @emmapeel38 Год назад +6

      Exactly. And they had a really good squad on paper the year (even two years) before Magic arrived.
      TONS of missing context on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's greatness. Missed the playoffs two years in a row - still somehow gets an MVP one of those seasons (!) - and played too much listless basketball. Even Jerry West (his coach then) thought that Kareem was a big pretender when it came to greatness.
      FFS, they're on TAPE DELAY in '80 because they were going nowhere leading up to Magic/Bird's rookie seasons. Seattle makes it to two Finals, what the hell is Kareem doing? He had from '69-'76, his peak overlaps with the ABA's existence, so the league is watered-down and he should have been racking up championships. He played in a centers-league, at the height of it BEING a centers league, and somehow, only wins "1" time; and racks up 5 MVPs before Magic comes along.
      Moses Malone won x3 MVPs, overlapping Kareem's prime; moving away from peak years here. Who thinks Moses Malone was greater than Kareem? And they played in the same conference for two of Malone's MVPs.
      Kareem was the face of the NBA in the '70s, yet Dr. J (who is nowhere near as great of a player) was FAR MORE influential on basketball; in a lesser league!
      Magic was Showtime, not Kareem.

      He merely mis spoke, but I knew what he meant, c'mon man. Heck I was into the Lakers back then and he was correct, Magic was handed an already made team. Norm Nixon, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jamaal Wilkes, and Micheal Cooper were already on the roster when they drafted Magic. In fact, Magic Johnson said the reason he left Michigan State was because the Lakers had the #1 pick asnd he knew he would go #1. 2 years later they drafted James Worthy is the #1 pick, but he couldn't start becaus of Jamaal Wilkes, whom had already won a championship with the Golden State Warriors with Rick Barry, so lets keep it real here.

    • @emmapeel38

Damn even when you look at the teams there was 2 guards running beside magic, and he's (size wise) the sf he is just listed differently. Now I may have missed quite a few, but the way that this debate was articulated and debated with sensibility ( by the panel) leads me to believe that this was the best yet. Best point that changed EVERYTHING was the fact that Magic, Bird, and Duncan came into the NBA to teams already on the fringe of being GREAT and these players (Magic, Bird, Duncan) came in and made very good teams GREAT teams, and or DYNASTIES - On The other hand, Michael Jordan and Steph Curry came from bottom feeding organizations, and their dynasty was built from the ground up.

    Heck I was into the Lakers back then and he was correct, Magic was handed an already made team. Norm Nixon, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jamaal Wilkes, and Micheal Cooper were already on the roster when they drafted Magic. In fact, Magic Johnson said the reason he left Michigan State was because the Lakers had the #1 pick asnd he knew he would go #1. 2 years later they drafted James Worthy is the #1 pick, but he couldn't start because of Jamaal Wilkes, whom had already won a championship with the Golden State Warriors with Rick Barry, so lets keep it real here. It was freaking unfair what the Lakers were doing to the league back then. And by the way, Gilbert Arenas didn't even mention the acquisition of Bob McAdoo to keep the train rolling, a guy that had won 3 scoring titles and an MVP, coming off the bench backing up Kareem. And they still weren't done, they went and acquired Mycal Thompson 2 years after the McAdoo acquisition from the Portland Trailblazers. Thompson during that time was a pretty good basketball player, he matched up against Kevin McHale because they played together in college at the University of Minnesota, and even he came off the bench. But people don't want to talk about that, and that was a stacked team, yet LeBron James gets criticized for stacking the deck. and I'm not even a LeBron guy, I've never been a fan of his. And by the way, the only the Lakers didn't win the chaampionship in 1983 against the Moses Malone 76ers team, was because Worthy had broken his leg that season, Kareem, Cooper and Nixon got hurt, lets keep it real, because that season the Lakers were making a mockery of the league. They were blowing teams out so badly that Kareem and Magic had several games of sitting on the bench in the 4th quarter, because McAdoo and Worthy were killing teams second unit coming off the bench.

    Alot of times I agree with Gilbert but this time he's just making up criteria that doesn't equal up to magic. If you say that you have to start from the bottom it's not Magic's fault that he didn't start from the bottom, but it is his fault that they have the same amount of years and magic had more championships than Steph did and he was the leader of the team the whole time they won those. Saying Magic isn't the best while trying to explain that two out of four championships for curry were with KD and trying to make excuses for that is like Jordan going to join magic on the Lakers and then they win two more championships. Nobody would give that credit, but because you want to prove your point you now act like oh yeah but he came from the bottom which makes no sense and has nothing to do with the actual argument and the question. Magic is the best pg because he could do everything. When they say magic is not a point guard and then try to say LeBrons a point guard it doesn't make sense since there is a point guard that dribbles the ball down the court for the LeBron is not usually the one dribbling down the court over 50% of the time, and that's the same thing for any other team it doesn't matter if they do it sometimes it matters if they're doing it every single time and LeBron was not point guard on his team's he had legitimate point guards so when you try and add LeBron into the point guard argument it makes no sense because he's not a point guard on any of those teams you're just looking at the Laker team and now he's more of a point guard point forward type of situation but he never was before. He only took control when he had two at the point guard position but magic was a true point guard because when the ball was passed in it would go to magic. You say a few years he didn't play the point guard position but he was in for like 14 years so if you didn't play the point guard position for like 3 years and then play the point guard position for 10 to 11 years. You're telling me that persons not a point guard? Gils argument makes no sense, especially after homeboy mentioned that KD was part of two of his championships and his only answer was that Steph came from the bottom. You can't have a top five guy come to your team, and actually I think at that time he was a top-three guy. Can't have them come to your team and then you count those championships like they really earned them and didn't just wipe people out. Like I said imagine Jordan going to the Lakers and that's KD to the warriors. Top five guys together. I like how nobody mentions the people that magic win with after Kareem, cause some of those teams were like....... Whose that again yet he gets no credit for that but Steph gets credit for having the same allstars around him and added KD. Every team needs two lead people to win so when you say magic and worthy who else are you talking about on that team. There were good people but not stars.

    Part of the criteria for me is Assist to Turnover ratio. How many assist (passes leading to points) are you contributing for your team before you turn the ball over (turnovers that don't lead to points). Because I will always see a point guard is the ball handler and facilitator for the team. Can you find the open man off a high screen, back door cuts, transition, skip pass, etc. I see Steph as the greatest scoring PG, but not greatest PG of all time. And Steph as a player is definitely top 10 - 12 all time. But not number 1 PG or Greatest of all time. I just can't see it.

      That is a criteria you can use via perception but it's ultimately isn't the standard just like accumulative stats or PGA imo via intangibles. It's universally known Steph greatest assets is his off ball gravity which is multi dynamic via distribution & shot creation but isn't documented statistically. Under this aspect alone, KD in addition to Iggy won FMVP as many to this day still are deceived in actually believe they were the focal pivot in determining GSW success via those specific series. What Curry does in terms of facilitation is heavily hindered via the art of gravity that's undocumented.

      What I'm saying is that every team oriented sport involves facilitation. Reason being is because you have to move an inanimate object to a goal/objective/target.
      The only way to do that is facilitation, and that is the designated role for a player at the PG position.
      You can make it work for your team's success if facilitation isn't your primary skill. But then that usually involves another means of facilitation. Which is why Draymond took on facilitating roles and split them among Steph.
      So Steph can be a great point guard, hands down, among point guards. He can be among the greatest "player" conversations if you like (using personal skill set). But "PG/point guard".

    • @emmapeel38
      @emmapeel38 Год назад +1

      @@4everoldskool626 He made it worse? The ratings in the '20 Finals was the worst it's been since '78. He undid all of the work that Magic and Bird did in the '80s, and MJ in the '90s.
      Remember the "pandemic", and its height in '20, when EVERYONE had to be at home? He's on the Lakers. The LAKERS! The lowest ratings in over 40 years. Lower than the Lakers Finals in '80, the one that was on tape delay. Kareem was their the whole decade, and fewer people wanted to watch HIS greatness, just like LeBron. Isiah Thomas likes ratings losers to be the face of basketball.

    Magic won in high school, college and NBA. He was a winner no matter where he was at. Love Steph and agree that his play changed modern basketball, but what Magic was to the league and what he did with the team he was drafted to is completely undeniable.
    And to say Magic didn't influence players: Penny, Steve Smith (before being moved to the 2), C Webb (power forward with PG skills), Ron Harper, Ben Simmons (before the mental breakdown), LeBron (as Gil stated Magic game with Jordan ability), Lonzo and D'Angelo (ironically two Lakers #2 overall picks).
