What is Gil talking about (5:03)? The Lakers didn't go to the Western Conference Finals two years in a row before Magic arrived. They lost in the First Round then Semis the two years prior. That was Seattle vs Denver (1978), Seattle vs Phoenix (1979). The Lakers last went to the Western Conference Finals in 1977 and went to the NBA Finals in 1973 (and lost). Magic arrived in 1979-80 season. They were by no means a dynasty when Magic arrived. They were a 47 win team the year prior.
Exactly. And they had a really good squad on paper the year (even two years) before Magic arrived. TONS of missing context on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's greatness. Missed the playoffs two years in a row - still somehow gets an MVP one of those seasons (!) - and played too much listless basketball. Even Jerry West (his coach then) thought that Kareem was a big pretender when it came to greatness. FFS, they're on TAPE DELAY in '80 because they were going nowhere leading up to Magic/Bird's rookie seasons. Seattle makes it to two Finals, what the hell is Kareem doing? He had from '69-'76, his peak overlaps with the ABA's existence, so the league is watered-down and he should have been racking up championships. He played in a centers-league, at the height of it BEING a centers league, and somehow, only wins "1" time; and racks up 5 MVPs before Magic comes along. Moses Malone won x3 MVPs, overlapping Kareem's prime; moving away from peak years here. Who thinks Moses Malone was greater than Kareem? And they played in the same conference for two of Malone's MVPs. Kareem was the face of the NBA in the '70s, yet Dr. J (who is nowhere near as great of a player) was FAR MORE influential on basketball; in a lesser league! Magic was Showtime, not Kareem.
He merely mis spoke, but I knew what he meant, c'mon man. Heck I was into the Lakers back then and he was correct, Magic was handed an already made team. Norm Nixon, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jamaal Wilkes, and Micheal Cooper were already on the roster when they drafted Magic. In fact, Magic Johnson said the reason he left Michigan State was because the Lakers had the #1 pick asnd he knew he would go #1. 2 years later they drafted James Worthy is the #1 pick, but he couldn't start becaus of Jamaal Wilkes, whom had already won a championship with the Golden State Warriors with Rick Barry, so lets keep it real here.
@@jameswarner300 Worthy went #1 overall 3 years later; not 2. Jerry West didn't want to draft Magic 1st overall, and he was the GM at the time; he wanted Moncrief. Bringing up Steph playing with KD for two of his chips as some sort of demerit, while overlooking that Magic played with the #2 player of all time for all of his Finals appearances and chips is nasty work.
Bruh he didn't just have KD...The warriors had the best record OF ALL-TIME then added KD for nothing. IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS PRIME!!!!! Kareem was already past his prime at the point. That's like when Clyde Drexler won a ring with the Rockets. Or Dwight Howard won a ring with the Lakers or Jason Kidd won a ring with the Mavericks. Only problem with Gil's reasoning with the pg debate ... Bron has only been listed at pg like twice in his 20 year career whereas Magic has been listed as a guard since college so he is very much a pg
Thank you! Also it’s untrue that the Lakers were a dominant team before Magic got there. 1979 they won the chip, Magics rookie year. Yes, they were a good team but not dominant until Magic. Lakers lost in the WCF SEMIS in 78, and in the first round of the playoffs in 77. Lost WCF in 76, and in 75 & 74 didn’t even make the playoffs. But I still agree that Steph is the BEST PG of all time. But Gil’s points sometimes be exaggerated when you actually look up the facts
Facts…and even though Magic was drafted to a great team he was definitely a catalyst to their winning. He compared Tim Duncan joining a great team but they didn’t win immediately nor did he won a finals MVP in his rookie season 🤷🏾♂️
Then what is a point guard? is it purely what your listed at. How is Lebron not the starting point guard when he's the one setting the plays, passing the ball, creating looks. When Lebron does everything a point guard does and is the same size as magic the only difference is the listed at. Damn even when you look at the teams there was 2 guards running beside magic, and he's (size wise) the sf he is just listed differently. He was bugging lol, that def matters but I feel like you have to have a certain individual status coupled with winning to be really certified without doubt
Before Magic arrived in '79 the Lakers won a championship in '72 and their last conference title was in' 73. They were either losing in the first round or one year not making it at all to the playoffs. They lost in the second round of the play-offs the year before Magic arrived. This was also just after the expansion from the ABA. So they actually weren't a stacked team dominating the league.
@@ACL_Entertainment1 They weren't. The ABA had just merged with the NBA. The Lakers didn't dominate the 70s. They were an average to good team and didn't always make the playoffs. No, Michael Jordan was the influence on scoring guards. AI was not that great to warrant the league consider changing how they drafted. He was doing illegal things, so they had to enforce some rules but he was exciting so they loosened the dribbling rules for him and guys like Kobe at the time.
No rules were made for AI. But Kenyon is crazy wrong Wilt literally had the most rule changes because of him. Magic had everyone trying to find big pgs.
They have their moments when experience gives them great insight and perspective but they often have weird reasoning or criteria for the position they take.
Yes. Michael Jordan texted Stephen Smith in a personal response to a conversation they'd been having at 5:54 in the morning to motivate Steph Curry. You're brilliant.
Every top 10 guys is a one of a kind player with extraordinary physical gifts. Then here comes Steph (he obviously has gifts), a 6'2 scrawny guy. 6'2 and thin is a penny a dozen build. In my opinion, this could be the best debate that I have witnessed on this podcast since it’s inception. Now I may have missed quite a few, but the way that this debate was articulated and debated with sensibility ( by the panel) leads me to believe that this was the best yet. Best point that changed EVERYTHING was the fact that Magic, Bird, and Duncan came into the NBA to teams already on the fringe of being GREAT and these players (Magic, Bird, Duncan) came in and made very good teams GREAT teams, and or DYNASTIES - On The other hand, Michael Jordan and Steph Curry came from bottom feeding organizations, and their dynasty was built from the ground up.
The Dynasty was built by getting Kevin Durant after already having the best record in the NBA. Without KD they CLEARLY could not beat a healthy Cavs team. They would've lost the first time if Kyrie & Kevin Love weren't injured. When healthy they never legitimately beat the Cavs. Without injury or without Kevin Durant they would've been another version of the Utah Jazz or New York Knicks. A great team that never won.
Steph is the best shooter of all time. Gil moving the goal post talking about what team drafted them. Still doesn’t take away from their greatness. They still had too perform…

You need to learn how to pay attention. They were calling Curry not a point guard. No one said Magic isnt one just to say it. Theres a thing called cause and effect. Pay attention.
Magic was rookie mvp playing point -center and scored 42 points in the championship game when Kareem was hurt and out. He was the goat point then and now.
Magic is #1 for now - lebron the (point guard ) is #2 for now - curry is #3 for now . But if curry does this prolific play for four or five more years . He may end up being the goat of goats over Jordan. But defense surpassing magic and LeBron. Just saying . If curry does this for 5 more years. And win another chip or two. It's a wrap . Curry the goat . You ever had curry goat 🐐. Yummy 😋
They totally neglected Magic mastery of running the offense and setting up open shots which is the main job of a point guard. He was even a terror in transition. He has the stats, the role criteria, the accolades, and the chips… no excuses. I can give Steph #2 but let’s be honest, golden state runs 2 shooting guards and 3 small forwards.
And those stats, accolades and chips are a factor of being given a golden spoon in his rookie year. It required little-no effort for Magic to get those chips with that stacked of a team. Curry was on a garbage team and built the culture himself and every single one of his team mates states that as fact. Magic was gifted chips, Curry earned chips 🤷🏻♂️

I respect Gil's POV on Magic, but Magic was a difference-maker. There is some merit that he got drafted to a championship-caliber team, but he was a big reason on what got them over that hump.
What Gil said about magic getting drafted to a dynasty that made the conference finals 2 years in a row is just factually very incorrect! Kareem had been there 4 years before magic got there and made the Western Conference finals 1 time the other years he was swept and gentleman swept out of the first and second round.
WCSF the year before magic got there...i had all my stats down..just talking to fast..53 wins/45 wins/47 wins....then they got magic to take them over the top
The point is that Magic got drafted to a stacked team with Kareem who was the best player in the league at that point and they were extremely privileged to have the number one pick 2 out of 4 years. That could never happen in this era. Imagine Steph got drafted to the Cavs with with Lebron and then 3 years later the Cavs got rights to the number one pick again and drafted Anthony Davis. That team would be unstoppable. That’s the position magic inherited.
His point was they weren’t trash. You know how many greats were drafted to a sorry ass team and never won a ring? Magic got drafted into a team that was already competitive.
Bird and Timmy did not inherit great teams with a lot of talent though. Bird rebuilt the Celtics and Timmy replenished a team that was on a downward spiral. In fact when he got hurt in 2000, they did not make it out of the first round and the man got back to back MVPs in the era of Shaq.
Also Magic was the Finals MVP in his rookie year great team or not. Plus Gil saying Magic walked into a dynasty is bullshit, a dynasty is q multi championship team how many rings with Kareem had the Lakers won before Magic arrived. Gil needs to actually know what he's talking about he just sounds dumb. Also Magic played at point in high school and college. I loved Gil as a player but the way he runs his mouth he sounds like Skip Bayless except dumber.
Magic had an influence on the game. You seen taller players getting the chance to play point guard such as Pippen, Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, Jason Kidd, LeBron, Luka
Gil spends the last few year deconstructing the concept of patterned basketball. But the world gets upset when some non-patterned talk happens on his show. Neither Gil or Steph said he’s the best floor general. Funny how when the question is best point guard, then Steph isn’t a point guard. Then when the question is best shooting guard, he doesn’t get mentioned at all
Traditional floor aren’t usually the best players on championship teams. Dominate bigs and wings (SF/SG) have lead to more championships than traditional point guards.
@@Matthew-xl5bcthere is no such thing as a traditional point guard. Bob Cousy was the first legendary point guard and he led the team in scoring for a title until they got an even more stacked team. Top point guards always score at minimum 18-23 points a game which is a lot.
I love that MJ chimed in, Steph is THE Petty King and he will absolutely use these comments and chatter around all these clips as motivation to fuel a tear this upcoming season!
So Steph team won 73 games. Lose 3 straight😮 Then gets KD. Why doesn't he bring that up along the Magic, Bird, and Duncan when talking about stack teams. 🤔
Plus Steph won 2 without kd. I'm tired of people complaining about good team trades lol now look EVERYONE trying to build super teams Lebron included when he was one of biggest critics of those warriors.
Gil was nice, didn't have the best situation which goes to the point of these legends joining already great teams. If Gil was on the lakers with kobe and shaq lakers would've gotten 10 chips 😂
I agree that adding Magic to the Laker which was pretty much a dynasty already is factor but we not gone act like Steph started to get injured less make the All-Star team every season after Steve Kerr and his system came in in 2014 so would Steph Curry still be him with out that system (rhetorical). Also I credit Steph, Draymond and Klay for the elevation of the Golden State franchise.
Gil can’t make that claim and then gloss over LeBron joining the Heat with DWade and Bosh like he didn’t go make a dynasty. It’s at the point right now where this podcast is a broken clock
I agree, man, actually, what's the harder thing to do? Taking over a terrible team or taking over a team. That's already dynastic and incredible before you came there. What's harder taking over as lead singer of the rolling stones or taking or your local bar band? One has a lot more pressure and a lot higher expecpatience l o l
Also what people leavin out is mentality which is half of basketball or any sport, Steph Curry and a few years later Klay Thompson both grew in the NBA lifestyle which is a privilege Magic Johnson and most players or legends don't have

The Lakers were not no dynasty when they drafted Magic and they had not gone to the WCF the prior 2 seasons. Gilbert got in front of a camera and straight up lied.
You can argue that a lot of players dont succeed coming into a franchise so you have to credit Magic for that. His enthusiasm and the way he approached the game in that locker room was a game in itself amongst those vets and coaches.

I'd say Steph is close but not over Magic yet. His injury history cost him quite a bit in this debate. Now, if he wins 1-2 more championships? He's got a much better case to be best PG.
NCAA titles mean nothing in the NBA and should never be used in professional discussions. Gil’s points are valid. Magic had a golden spoon his entire career, his job was not nearly as difficult as other people in the discussion for best PG ever. The difficulty of your path absolutely has an impact on your level of greatness.

It was freaking unfair what the Lakers were doing to the league back then. And by the way, Gilbert Arenas didn't even mention the acquisition of Bob McAdoo to keep the train rolling, a guy that had won 3 scoring titles and an MVP, coming off the bench backing up Kareem. And they still weren't done, they went and acquired Mycal Thompson 2 years after the McAdoo acquisition from the Portland Trailblazers. Thompson during that time was a pretty good basketball player, he matched up against Kevin McHale because they played together in college at the University of Minnesota, and even he came off the bench. But people don't want to talk about that, and that was a stacked team, yet LeBron James gets criticized for stacking the deck. and I'm not even a LeBron guy, I've never been a fan of his. And by the way, the only the Lakers didn't win the chaampionship in 1983 against the Moses Malone 76ers team, was because Worthy had broken his leg that season, Kareem, Cooper and Nixon got hurt, lets keep it real, because that season the Lakers were making a mockery of the league. They were blowing teams out so badly that Kareem and Magic had several games of sitting on the bench in the 4th quarter, because McAdoo and Worthy were killing teams second unit coming off the bench.

Alot of times I agree with Gilbert but this time he's just making up criteria that doesn't equal up to magic. If you say that you have to start from the bottom it's not Magic's fault that he didn't start from the bottom, but it is his fault that they have the same amount of years and magic had more championships than Steph did and he was the leader of the team the whole time they won those. Saying Magic isn't the best while trying to explain that two out of four championships for curry were with KD and trying to make excuses for that is like Jordan going to join magic on the Lakers and then they win two more championships. Nobody would give that credit, but because you want to prove your point you now act like oh yeah but he came from the bottom which makes no sense and has nothing to do with the actual argument and the question. Magic is the best pg because he could do everything. When they say magic is not a point guard and then try to say LeBrons a point guard it doesn't make sense since there is a point guard that dribbles the ball down the court for the LeBron is not usually the one dribbling down the court over 50% of the time, and that's the same thing for any other team it doesn't matter if they do it sometimes it matters if they're doing it every single time and LeBron was not point guard on his team's he had legitimate point guards so when you try and add LeBron into the point guard argument it makes no sense because he's not a point guard on any of those teams you're just looking at the Laker team and now he's more of a point guard point forward type of situation but he never was before. He only took control when he had two at the point guard position but magic was a true point guard because when the ball was passed in it would go to magic. You say a few years he didn't play the point guard position but he was in for like 14 years so if you didn't play the point guard position for like 3 years and then play the point guard position for 10 to 11 years. You're telling me that persons not a point guard? Gils argument makes no sense, especially after homeboy mentioned that KD was part of two of his championships and his only answer was that Steph came from the bottom. You can't have a top five guy come to your team, and actually I think at that time he was a top-three guy. Can't have them come to your team and then you count those championships like they really earned them and didn't just wipe people out. Like I said imagine Jordan going to the Lakers and that's KD to the warriors. Top five guys together. I like how nobody mentions the people that magic win with after Kareem, cause some of those teams were like....... Whose that again yet he gets no credit for that but Steph gets credit for having the same allstars around him and added KD. Every team needs two lead people to win so when you say magic and worthy who else are you talking about on that team. There were good people but not stars.

Like I said, adding KD was overkill he was literally the second best player in the entire league and Steph was the 3rd and Klay and Draymond were both top 15. Klay was the 2nd best shooter in the league only behind Steph, and KD wasn't really that far behind either of them shooting-wise too. Draymond was the best defender in the league. Iggy also made All-Defensive 1st team with Warriors as well. I don't know how much clearer I can explain how much "overkill" that Warriors team was when they added KD.
Gil rewrote history a little bit here. The Lakers won 45 & 47 prior to Magic’s arrival. And he mentioned Kareem but in terms of winning Magic resurrected Kareem’s career, 6 championships and 5 of em were with Magic! During their tenure together Magic won 3 MVP’s to Kareem’s 1 and 3 FMVP’s to 1.
Part of the criteria for me is Assist to Turnover ratio. How many assist (passes leading to points) are you contributing for your team before you turn the ball over (turnovers that don't lead to points). Because I will always see a point guard is the ball handler and facilitator for the team. Can you find the open man off a high screen, back door cuts, transition, skip pass, etc. I see Steph as the greatest scoring PG, but not greatest PG of all time. And Steph as a player is definitely top 10 - 12 all time. But not number 1 PG or Greatest of all time. I just can't see it.
That is one statistic and you cannot choose one stat to define a position because the position is not played the same way. Both guy create shots for their team in different ways. The reason people don't see it is because they get told a point is the passer/facilitator in the team who gets the most assists, whereas that has never been the case in the NBA. Between both guys, Steph is the better player so he is the best point guard of all time.
That is a criteria you can use via perception but it's ultimately isn't the standard just like accumulative stats or PGA imo via intangibles. It's universally known Steph greatest assets is his off ball gravity which is multi dynamic via distribution & shot creation but isn't documented statistically. Under this aspect alone, KD in addition to Iggy won FMVP as many to this day still are deceived in actually believe they were the focal pivot in determining GSW success via those specific series. What Curry does in terms of facilitation is heavily hindered via the art of gravity that's undocumented.
@@sskmanentsa5326 have to disagree with you. Case: Jokic is a facilitating center. But compared to other centers I can't say he's the best. There are certain roles and expectations for a team based on position. I can say that he plays his position in a way beneficial for his teams success. But compared to Shaq, Hakeem, Kareem, The Admiral, and others he's not the "greatest". What I'm saying is that every team oriented sport involves facilitation. Reason being is because you have to move an inanimate object to a goal/objective/target. The only way to do that is facilitation, and that is the designated role for a player at the PG position. You can make it work for your team's success if facilitation isn't your primary skill. But then that usually involves another means of facilitation. Which is why Draymond took on facilitating roles and split them among Steph. So Steph can be a great point guard, hands down, among point guards. He can be among the greatest "player" conversations if you like (using personal skill set). But "PG/point guard". Sorry but we can agree to disagree.

Magic won in high school, college and NBA. He was a winner no matter where he was at. Love Steph and agree that his play changed modern basketball, but what Magic was to the league and what he did with the team he was drafted to is completely undeniable. And to say Magic didn't influence players: Penny, Steve Smith (before being moved to the 2), C Webb (power forward with PG skills), Ron Harper, Ben Simmons (before the mental breakdown), LeBron (as Gil stated Magic game with Jordan ability), Lonzo and D'Angelo (ironically two Lakers #2 overall picks).

Obviously Gil shoots his mouth off without knowing shit.
He merely mis spoke, but I knew what he meant, c'mon man. Heck I was into the Lakers back then and he was correct, Magic was handed an already made team. @@jameswarner300 Worthy went #1 overall 3 years later; not 2. Jerry West didn't want to draft Magic 1st overall, and he was the GM at the time; he wanted Moncrief. The Dynasty was built by getting Kevin Durant after already having the best record in the NBA. Without KD they CLEARLY could not beat a healthy Cavs team. What Gil said about magic getting drafted to a dynasty that made the conference finals 2 years in a row is just factually very incorrect! Right. He a completely fabricated the Lakers before Magic got there.
But y’all the same who hate on Curry playing with KD. Magic joined a stacked ass team, Steph built is.
His point was they weren’t trash. You know how many greats were drafted to a sorry ass team and never won a ring? Magic got drafted into a team that was already competitive.
This is the dumbest conversation I ever heard! To discredit Magic because of his team is crazy!
Bird and Timmy did not inherit great teams with a lot of talent though. Bird rebuilt the Celtics and Timmy replenished a team that was on a downward spiral. In fact when he got hurt in 2000, they did not make it out of the first round and the man got back to back MVPs in the era of Shaq.
bird did inherit a good team but i agree with your point ab tim

Traditional floor aren’t usually the best players on championship teams. Dominate bigs and wings (SF/SG) have lead to more championships than traditional point guards.
@@Matthew-xl5bcthere is no such thing as a traditional point guard. Bob Cousy was the first legendary point guard and he led the team in scoring for a title until they got an even more stacked team. Top point guards always score at minimum 18-23 points a game which is a lot.

Why do people keep presenting their opinions as facts?! Jeez not because you believe something strongly does it make it true! "Everybody wants to be Curry?" Every AA kid wants to be like Steph? Which statistical survey informed that statement? Arenas is an opinionated joker... see what I did there?
From 1979-1983 Magic and Norm Nixon both avg at least 15 points and 7 assists.
If you want to say Magic is not a PG then you can say the same thing for Steph. He is not a PG either. We can play and dance all day with these technical points.
And Magic won an NCAA title.. Steph didn’t in college. Yet somehow Steph is better than Magic. Yeah no.
I'd say Steph is close but not over Magic yet. His injury history cost him quite a bit in this debate. Now, if he wins 1-2 more championships? He's got a much better case to be best PG.
Who the fuck ever brings up college achievements in a nba debate?
Yall really believes MJ texted Stephen A at 5AM with a long detailed text about how good another was, again at 5am??? 😂😂😂
The basketball hall of fame is your basketball career not just your nba career
Heck I was into the Lakers back then and he was correct, Magic was handed an already made team. Norm Nixon, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jamaal Wilkes, and Micheal Cooper were already on the roster when they drafted Magic. In fact, Magic Johnson said the reason he left Michigan State was because the Lakers had the #1 pick asnd he knew he would go #1. 2 years later they drafted James Worthy is the #1 pick, but he couldn't start because of Jamaal Wilkes, whom had already won a championship with the Golden State Warriors with Rick Barry, so lets keep it real here.

Ai changed the game like how harden changed the game. Harden made the 0 step legal, while Iverson made the lifting legal.

Steph is a SG, playing the PG position. Now with the addition of CP3, he will move to the 2.

HOW IS MAGIC NOT A POINT GUARD
Facts. Some of these guys have perspectives that make absolutely no sense!
His height
@@SergiosFitness_ I guess Charles Barkley was a guard because he was 6'4" 😆
Bird went from 29 wins to 62 wins his rookie season before McHale, and other great players came
Yup these guys need to research more. They are spreading false narratives lol
@Carter-se6xw^dumb ass arguement lol
Magic won in high school, college and NBA. He was a winner no matter where he was at. Love Steph and agree that his play changed modern basketball, but what Magic was to the league and what he did with the team he was drafted to is completely undeniable.
And to say Magic didn't influence players: Penny, Steve Smith (before being moved to the 2), C Webb (power forward with PG skills), Ron Harper, Ben Simmons (before the mental breakdown), LeBron (as Gil stated Magic game with Jordan ability), Lonzo and D'Angelo (ironically two Lakers #2 overall picks).
by gilberts logic then what can we say about kobe being drafted to a team with shaq, i just want to know where this line of logic starts and ends. And also does this make zeek the best pg because he really lead that team by himself.
Shaq came after Kobe wtf are you saying
Kobe was also drafted to a championship contender with 3 All Stars shaq Jones and van exel.
@@donwilliamson3111They came the sane year
Charlotte drafted Kobe not the Lakers
Kobe was a Laker like 5 days before Shaq.
LAL was not a dynasty pre Magic. They were missing playoffs and/or getting bounced in the 1st round pre Magic. This was with KAJ, Wilkes, and Norm Nixon.
People forget the Lakers ain’t make the finals one time with Kareem until Magic got there.
