Wow! That's quite a revelation about Gus. Eric seems like he probably studied music and that's probably why he got frustrated. One reason that surprised me is because you'd think someone who got credit for horn arrangements would have also studied. But the magic of those arrangements is their simplicity.
I love Eric Carmen's songs and music. He was a great guy. He was incredible and so talented. He was very underrated as a singer and songwriter. He was one of the Best! I'm going to miss him so much. Love You, Eric, Always! Heaven has gained another amazing voice.🌹
I was at Charlotte High School in Rochester, NY in the 1970s when the Raspberries came out. I still remember buying their first self-titled "Vinyl" album with the "Scratch and Sniff" sticker on the front. Yes, if you scratched it, it smelled like Raspberries! They had a lot of great songs but my two favorites were, "I Can Remember," and "If You Change Your Mind." I had lost a high school sweet heart back then, and it seemed every one of Eric's words resonated with the feelings I was going through. After Eric left the band for his solo career in the late 1970s, I believe it was the Summer of 1975, I saw the remaining band with Jim Bonfanti on drums, Wally Bryson on lead guitar, and John Aleksic on bass doing a show at the Hilton High School gymnasium in Hilton, NY. The Raspberries were Great with Eric and Eric had many hits alone and it was great they re-united in the later years to do great shows together again. Thanks RHM, Thanks Eric, Thanks Raspberries, for Great memories... ♥✝🙏
Thank you Caleb. Mr Bernard Purdy claims that those very same nailed down Drums in NYC played on 21 early Beatles tracks AND Ringo has Never denied Bernard's claims. Another great show.
Dudgeon was brilliant, no matter what he did or did not know. I remember reading, at the time, that Eric and He didn't see eye to eye in the studio. "Boats" is Carmen's greatest artistic achievement. It's a near perfect record, even though it didn't sell.
I wonder what album Eric Carmen recorded about what you guys were talking about what was the name of the album is the question with this famous producer
Great topic and interview with Quaye. I do have to ask though, why in God's name would you have a pic or pics of John Lennon's murderer in the background collage @1:05
This was a very odd and stressful period for Carmen as i recall. First-Off, Jimmy Ienner was not producing "Boats", and the reason was your typical evasive speculation as reported by local Clev media. Scene Magazine in Clev always supported Carmen (raspberries ), despite Scene Mag never filtered their sarcasm. However, Ienner's absence was glaring and that in itself was extremely odd. Carmen just had huge success w. his debut record. "All by Myself's" chart topping success was amazing and Carmen's follow-up, "Boats Against the Current" was suppose to be even better . . . or so local Clev Media was saying at that time, 1976. Clev Scene Magazine was reporting that Producer for "Boats" Gus Dudgeon did not like Carmen's supporting band "MAGIC" (a local clev area band), despite they were the same band that supported Carmen's "All by Myself" and no reason for Dudgeon's opinion or not wanting "Magic" was ever made known. Dudgeon wanted Elton John's Studio Band to record with Carmen, no exceptions. Moreover, Carmen supposedly had some cool ideas regarding other players that Eric thought would work better on certain songs . . . as I recall Scene Magazine reported there was conflict over a Sax-Player. Dudgeon had contracted for "Boats" sessions and and Eric Carmen wanted someone else (diff Sax Player) . . . go figure. Production over-runs, delays, pushed everything well into 1977, that cost Carmen alotta out of pocket money to finish the album. "Boats" did not eclipse Carmen's debut of "All by Myself". The album was generally like, but many people wondered how good it could have been if Jimmy Ienner had produced "Boats" instead.
Elton John does not know notation. Elton John does not read sheet music. Elton and Gus got along perfectly. Maybe Eric Carmen is classically trained (including sheet music literacy) and expected everyone else to be also.
RIP wonderful Éric. You will be so very missed. 🙏❤️🙏

RIP Eric... Loved him. 😢
Gus Dudgeon was so instrumental (pun intended!) in helping create that classic Elton John sound between 1970 and 1976.

R.I.P. Eric

I wonder how Eric Carmen is doing. Maybe you can do a segment on The Raspberries.
My favorite Eric Carmen record
He was Tremendous. A Great American.
Thank you Caleb. Mr Bernard Purdy claims that those very same nailed down Drums in NYC played on 21 early Beatles tracks AND Ringo has Never denied Bernard's claims. Another great show.
Great video, John! I had no idea Brian Wilson was involved 0:25 😊
Gus Dudgeon got a huge drum sound with Dave Mattacks on XTC's Nonesuch. Especially on "Books Are Burning".
I just happened to listen to Boats Against the Current last night. Nigel's drums sound AMAZING.
Very excited for this full interview!
oh john..i am so sorry you're sick. I sincerely hope you feel better soon.
Thanks John great interview, some good information fame out of it.
Very cool. Caleb is great!. I love the Bernard Purdie story. lol. Can't change the perfect location for recording the drums.

Love Boats Against the Current, but hate Eric’s politics and his obsession with it.
I feel the same way. I would be interested to know how Eric became so immersed in conservative ideas.

Interesting stuff. I wonder if Ienner has ever talked about this part of his life.
Good video!
Eric Carmen just passed away today at the age of 74.
Elton John does not know notation. Elton John does not read sheet music. Elton and Gus got along perfectly. Maybe Eric Carmen is classically trained (including sheet music literacy) and expected everyone else to be also.
What were Eric's politics? I only listened to his music.
Gus drove off the road and he and his wife died,
Eric Cartman has massive problems with virtually everybody. So take it with a grain of salt.
Eric didn't stay in his lane and trust the pros. He didn't last. A one hot wonder, All By Hisself.
Not a one-hit wonder and he wrote six top ten hits. "That's Rock 'n' Roll" & "Hey Deanie" for Shaun Cassidy & "Almost Paradise" from Footloose.
