For this Free For All Friday, I thought I would check out a close second in a recent poll, Energize Me by After Forever. I didn't know it was Floor's old band until after I posted it in the poll. 😂 So tell me what you know about this band! Should I listen to anything else by them?

After Forever was Floor's first band she joined at age 16. ReVamp is the band Floor formed when After Forever disbanded in 2009. Nightwish called in 2012.
After Forever was formed in 1995 as a death metal band, co-founded by Sander Gommans and Mark Jansen. Mark left in 2002 and formed EPICA. When Floor joined in 1997 ,they switched to symphonic metal. The song is from the 5th, and final ,self titled album in 2007.
Yes , try more from them. Live versions of Monolith of Doubt or Dreamflight.
And Yes to ReVamp, recommend starting with Disdain live at Graspop 2010.

Great reaction! After Forever was Floor's first band. Revamp was her second band and the one she was in before Nightwish. Revamp actually overlaped with Nightwish for a few years until Floor shut it down because she knew it was too much work to do both. She met her husband while Revamp and Sabaton were touring together in the US which happened after Wacken 2013 and the Imaganerium tour. This is a more commercial/radio friendly song for the band and clearly intended to help them breakout (Netherlands is not a metal country, much more pop oriented). They worked with a Dutch songwriter, Gordon Groothedde, on this song and Envision. Floor turned to him some 15 years later to help her develop her solo sound. Checkout her solo singles Fire and Storm and you will get very similar vibes as this song.

This song, I believe, was the first single off their self-titled, last album, which was released in 2007. Saw them tour for this album in 2008, opening up for Overkill in NYC. I immediately fell in love with this band and actually got to meet Floor afterwards during Overkill's set as she popped out to check out their set. Absolute sweetheart of a gal. Was very sad when I heard that the band disbanded a year later.

Hello Nikki, 'Energize Me' is track #4 on their fifth and final studio album 'After Forever' by the eponymous Dutch symphonic metal band After Forever. It was released in the United States on September 28, 2007, so Floor was 26yo at the time. The album reached number 6 on the Dutch album charts.

Energize Me was my first introduction to Floor. After Forever quickly became one of my favorites, but they disbanded a year or two later. ReVamp wasn't really my cup of tea, but few years after that I hear Floor got called in to fill in for Anette in Nightwish, my favorite band. The rest is history.

Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some other of my favourites:
    Monolith of Doubt: ruclips.net/video/3TmKHkQx45U/видео.html
    Dreamflight: ruclips.net/video/73-_F9prx4I/видео.html
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). Here is a link to a part of a TV show (with english subtitles) of the reunion of the class of the Rock Academy with mostly backstage footage of the Tampere concert of Nightwish in 2015: ruclips.net/video/B3NIfu0qvtg/видео.html
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 which upset Floor very much. Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples:
    Misery’s no Crime: ruclips.net/video/SNPesLFTnUg/видео.html
    Disdain: ruclips.net/video/tIqzPXzhEuw/видео.html
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour, and became a permanent member in 2013. She performed with Revamp for a couple of years also, but in 2016 it was clear she could not combine the two bands anymore, so Revamp disbanded.

@@noneofyerbeeswax8194 There was certainly a reason why Mark was kicked out of the band. The only reason I don't listen to Epica is neither Simone nor the music - it's because Mark thinks he has to growl all the time. If he would finally shut up, Epica would certainly be my favorite band after Nightwish and Pink Floyd.
Btw; Floor growls far better than Mark.

      @noneofyerbeeswax8194 Год назад

@@Kelsea-2002 🤣Totally agree with you on the last one.
In fact, Sander growls far better than Mark too. And he didn't think he had to growl all the time, which is also refreshing. AF were more creative with the music and the vocal styles than Epica will ever be.
"Creative differences" was the official reason for parting ways with Mark, and I think, the real one too. While AF and Epica have always shared a large portion of their fanbase, I don't think they sound particularly alike. I very much like AF's more progressive approach, but Epica leaves me cold.
I don't like Epica regardless of the growls. Their songs are like an airplane: noisy, heavy, running down the runway without ever taking off or changing the direction. Always the same formula.
Since you're a fan of Pink Floyd, I wonder what you think of The Gathering. They have the same tranceatic quality to them, which their heavier doom metal sound only adds to, and Anneke is an exceptional vocalist. Their later trip-rock albums sound even more similar to Floyd.

This was from 2006... the self titled album from After Forever that was the last album the band did. They opened for Nightwish I believe, which is how Floor Jansen became friends w/ the band... After Forever disbanded in 2008 when lead guitarist Sander Gommans bailed ... he was reportedly Floor Jansen's boyfriend, and they split up... Floor wanted to continue the band, but Gommans owned the rights to the name and reportedly refused to let her use it.
Floor formed ReVamp afterwards and released their debut album in 2010, but she also had to take a break for mental issues from a nervous breakdown... In 2012, she signed on w/ Nightwish's management when they asked her to take their singer's spot on tour (Anette Olzen was pregnant and she would not be able to carry on touring in her late term) ... Soon after, she got a call for her to fly to the US in the Fall of 2012 and learn the Nightwish set in 48 hrs after Anette fell ill on the tour and the band decided to send her home and terminate her as the singer.
Floor carried touring w/ Nightwish into 2013 and she was asked to join the band full-time.

    • @noneofyerbeeswax8194
      @noneofyerbeeswax8194 Год назад +1

The album was released in 2007, and the band split up in 2009. Floor and Sander broke up either in late 2006 or early 2007, and this was not the main reason for the band to stop, at least not initially. The rights to all AF material, except for this album, are (still) owned by Hans van Vuren who had a record label Transmission records which he bankrupted in 2005, thus royally screwing over AF and a few other bands. They didn't get paid for their fourth studio album "Remagine" and couldn't record a live DVD because he simply wouldn't allow that. Sander had lost the legal battle and become bitter and disinterested in the band, which might also have been a big factor in his breakup with Floor. This what I have managed to piece together from all the different sources; how close this is to reality, I don't know. But the biggest problem was the enslaving label contract for sure.

@@noneofyerbeeswax8194 Your logic makes no sense at all because After Forever was signed to Nuclear Blast for the last album (OK, in 2007) and they were committed to promoting the band (They even toured the USA for the first time) when Gommans shut the band down in 2008 because of some mental issues... They announced their split in 2009.
Floor said that she wanted to carry on After Forever, but Gommans refused ...and he owned the rights to the name After Forever... Floor was bitter about that herself - she had committed a decade to the band and 1 guy (Gommans) was responsible for folding it...
It had nothing to do w/ their past catalog and Transmission Records.
Floor formed ReVamp w/ former members of After Forever, and they lasted 2 albums.

      "Posted: April 18, 2008 11:16:08
      Sander:
Nuclear Blast can't re-release anything, they haven't got the rights.
Just before Hans van Vuren got bankrupt he "sold" all the rights to his wife, in order to be able to keep the rights, start a new company and continue his releases.
That's why we could not release a DVD since he wouldn"t cooperate and it makes no sense to me to record one with only songs from the last album.
He tried to force a break up of the band when he knew the contract was finished, and he even tried to sabotage the Remagine recordings.
You can't imagine what he has done to the band, and especially to me personally.
When I started to have my personal break, he tried to drain all the energy from me by threatening me, ordering all kinds of stupid stuff on my account, putting fake profiles of me on different sites on the internet etc etc.
I had to go to the police to stop this insanity, and it makes me sad that such a person has managed to get After Forever in a difficult position.
All the money that Remagine and Mea Culpa brought, went directly to him, and it's extremely frustrating that there's nothing we can do about that legally since "he went bankrupt".
The musicbusiness can be a beautiful thing, but guys like him make it an impossible business.
As a member of After Forever I honestly say that we put all the energy we had in our albums, it makes me sick that this idiot can do with them whatever he wants..."

Floor Jansen and Sander Gommans (the only remaining founder after Mark Jansen left to create Epica with Floors bestie,Simone Simons) "love song" they wrote together,in an attempt to bring After Forever forward after the departure of an important band member in Mark Jansen. In my own opinion,i think if they moved away from theyr original sound to this more straight forward metal,i think they would have eventually gotten that breakthrough they all dreamt of.
I think you might have gotten the very blurred official link to this video,i remember i gave you the title of a much better HD version of it,that would have given you a better resolution then you got,and a much better video and sound quality. Other then that,im happy you reacted to this!
The thing with After Forever is that, yes they are really talented as individuals and as a band. Sander Gommans is a guitar player AND a growler, the same as Mark Jansen that left.
But the thing for me personally is that...... they are much more progressive then this song, its alot of "chaos". Random instrumental changes and vocals, all over the place like with most progressive metal.
I remember you not getting into Epica THAt much, because of theyr progressive influence. Alot happening at once, and it seems to change when you least expect it. Sometimes you feel like you cant get a hold on the beat properly.
BUT..... how about you pick After Forever Strong (filmed and uploaded by MC SharQ)
Its a cellphone recording, but a really nice one for being that many years old already.
I can tell you that its Floors own written song for her mother that has struggled with numberous things, but the main thing being rheumatism.
A TINY spoiler for you. This version is the ONLY one where Floor Jansen doesnt break on. Ever since Floor has humbly admitted that this song breaks her every time she attempts to perform it,and there is plenty of proof out there. And this leads me abit into the TV show Floor Jansen attended(Beste Zangers) where the plot is that every new week,1 artist and theyr favourite songs are to be celebrated and honored by the other artists. And there is a young Dutch woman named Emma Heesters that debuted on television with this show, she has a mom that is a breast cancer survivor, and therefor she embraced Strong and wanted to sing it for Floor on her own week: Emma Heesters sings Strong for Floor Jansen (2019) (with subtitles) Remember to tag in the closed captions, and you will understand everything they say. You might need napkins, but its such a heartwarming performance. You will see the start of theese 2 despite great age difference become close friends over this very moment. The other artists didnt even know who Floor Jansen was before this show, wich leaves for some AMAZING reactions from them during Floors performances.
But you know what Nikki? I JUST now got to think of a uptempo live performance with After Forever i think you might want to see. What if i said that Floor Jansen sings and is clearly drawn to her boyfriend Sander Gommans, wich accompanies her with growls? Its actually not a bad song at all,so here is some simple steps to get that set up.
Search for: After Forever - Live at Pinkpop Festival (2004) Full Concert. And put the actual timer to 6:39 (The song doesnt end until 11:35)
Whats so special about this concert? This is the same concert where they cover Iron Maidens hit The Evil That Men Do,so Floor is wearing a Bruce Dickinson inspired outfit the entire concert,as a tribute. Its not as progressive as they usually get, hard riffs and drums,i think you will enjoy to see thoose 2 perform together. The song is called: Between Love And Fire.
And if you want to check out ReVamp,i strongly recommend: ReVamp - Disgraced Live at Graspop (2010)
Again, based on what you have told us so far with bands, and what you like and not so much, theese are songs i believe you have the highest chance of liking, and that gives you a good first impression of the bands. ReVamp was Floors very own created band, after the sad departure of After Forever wich mentally crushed her.

Hey Nikki. This is one of my favorite "After Forever" song from a young Floor Jansen. So, here are some fun facts for you:
    Fun facts:
    1. Floor Jansen and Mark Jansen (no family relation) were co-members in their first band “After Forever”
    2. Mark Jansen left “After Forever” and founded “Sahara Dust” and asked, then 17 years old girlfriend, Simone Simons to be the front woman and lead singer of the band
    3. Simone Simons became interested in Symphonic Metal and Classical style singing after listening to Nightwish’s Oceanborn.
    4. Mark Jansen changed the name of his band “Sahara Dust” to “Epica” that is the name of one of “Kamelot”’s album, a band they were touring with.
    5. Simone Simons has been featured on more “Kamelot” songs - recommendation for a good live version of “The Haunting”: ruclips.net/video/RsMXxxDMFYY/видео.html
    6. Simone Simons is the long-time partner of the Kamelot’s keyboard player: Oliver Palotal - they have a son together
    7. During their US tour in 2012, Nightwish asked Floor Jansen to join the band as a replacement vocalist after Anette Olzon’s exit. This was the result of the so-called Denver Debacle where Nightwish had the difficult task of choosing between cancelling the gig and going ahead with support band Kamelot’s backing vocalists Elize Ryd (now Amaranthe) and Alissa White-Gluz (The Agonist, now Arch Enemy) in Olzon’s place. With the audience’s blessing they chose the latter, resulting an unforgettable and historic show. Elize, Alissa and Nightwish were applauded for their efforts by seemingly everyone except Olzon, who made her rather ungrateful opinions known the next day via an online post. A few days later - October 1st, 2012 - Olzon was officially given the boot and the tour continued with ReVamp / ex-After Forever singer Floor Jansen fronting the band.
    8. Elisa Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz are still appearing now and then in Kamelot live performance or albums. Here is a recommendation: Sacrimony ruclips.net/video/1WvWbUgCcJw/видео.html
    9. Kamelot’s current lead singer: Tommy Karevik and Simone Simons both have prominent parts in Arjen Anthony Lucassen project, Ayreon. Many great musicians and vocalist participate to this project. As an introduction to and maybe a surprise for you, I recommend: Ayreon, check “The Day That The World Breaks Down” ruclips.net/video/oFuMKdrzPqU/видео.html
    10. ARjen Anthony Lucassen - helped young Floor improve her vocal abilities by constantly challenging her, especially with regards to lower tones and harmonies.
    11. Gjalt Lucassen, Arjen Anthony Lucassen's brother, is a latin teacher and write the latin lyrics you hear in Epica's song.
    12. Floor Jansen is married to Sabaton drummer, Hannes Van Dahl. As an introduction to Sabaton, check Ghost Division (the drummer in this video is NOT Hannes van Dahl - but it’s a great intro anyway): ruclips.net/video/9FkYxnm70vg/видео.html
    13. Sabaton has been touring with Amaranthe (Eliza Ryd) last year. Amaranthe has made it a cover in homage for their touring partner, 82nd all the way ruclips.net/video/56MaYg-LNXM/видео.html - they perform it together live here: ruclips.net/video/56MaYg-LNXM/видео.html

Sometimes my comment will stay, but be invisible to everyone else (and to myself once I've logged out) - which means that it is indeed being held captive and brutally interrogated in some dark "for review" dungeon. As nobody normally checks those dungeons, this means that it will remain invisible forever. All of this is because of the automated YT algorithm which sucks. I don't think machines should be allowed to decide what's appropriate and what isn't. But somehow, the owners of YT and Goolag have forgotten to ask my opinion on the matter...

That was the last and most successful single from After Forever. The accompanying album reached number 6 in the Dutch album charts in 2007. In Germany it was the first album to appear in the charts. After Forever was on the verge of a breakthrough. But the band breaks up due to the long-term illness of the founder.
Floor didn't co-found the band, but was part of the original line-up and was instrumental in the songwriting.

Actually the band broke up because the founder, who was Floor's long term boyfriend, cheated on her with her vocal coach. Yes he did suffer a burn out but that wasn't why the band broke up.

And they give that up because of a private argument? Floor was still upset about the breakup while she was with Nightwish, and the Energize Me album hangs on her gold/platinum vinyl wall.

The band got royally fucked over by the record label. Transmission Records went bankrupt (or rather was bankrupted) in 2005, and they didn't get paid for their album "Remagine" at all. They also couldn't make a live DVD because the rights to most of their material belonged (and still do) to Hans van Vuren. Sander said on the After Forever forum back in 2008 that it was the main reason they were taking a break. He knew they were recording their last album in 2006. He had lost the legal battle and, as a consequence, all the interest in the band (and Floor :). Signing to Nuclear Blast and finding a new producer (Gordon Groothedde - the same guy who's behind Floor's current solo project) didn't change much.

I hadn't heard this either. It was pretty good
Floor as a single artist or with her previous bands will get a lot of love in the votes, but Nightwish is Floor and five other fantastic musicians playing great compositions so they will as a group always get the most votes from the fans

you probably know more about Floor than I do Nikki, I just got done watching footage of her opening for Metallica in Amsterdam, actually thought that this was the song she opened with but when the techno- like keys started I realized it wasn't...the sound was a bit iffy for the performance I watched, and the crowd sadly seemed a little unenthusiastic considering they're supposedly a home crowd, possibly only there for the headliners 🙁

Well, opening for Metallica with a (mostly) pop setlist wasn't the greatest idea to begin with, so the crowd's reaction should have been expected. Not that I'm a fan of Metallica, they sold out decades ago...

Oh well, I'm not a big fan of Nightwish, I much prefer her early work that most people don't care about, so I could recommend some After Forever and ReVamp songs which nobody ever reacts to. But I don't know what kind of music you're into. I suppose it's not gothic, symphonic or progressive metal (saw your comment in the Dream Theater reaction), so it's either heavier genres of metal or no metal.

It's a very bold assumption that he would be the one making the decision, even if he DID want to break up AF. Here is a snippet of an interview with Floor from September 2007:
"Q: Ok, to conclude, a more general question: what is the most positive thing about being the singer of After Forever?
Floor: Well, the fact that I can sing things that are written by myself: lyrics and melodies. It's great to be able to do that. For instance, look at Anette, or even Tarja from Nightwish, she sang what Tuomas wrote: his lines, his words. And I can do my thing, I'm totally myself in this band, and I think that's the most important thing!"
People really seem to believe these days that becoming the singer of NW was a "dream come true" for her. It really wasn't. She would've never joined NW, had AF not broken up and had she not suffered from a severe burnout.
