    Thanks Ethan!!! Within the last 30 days I just purchased the legacy K12's. I was second guessing myself about the purchase. After watching a few reviews; you all said the same thing about the sound at high volume otherwise there's not much difference. I like what one guy said and that was with the new digital interface on the back; there's more that could break. Cheers!!!

    Good Review buddy. I loved it. U are right stick with the K12 if you have already and if you wanna buy new ones, then get K12.2 . As for me I will keep my K12s and KW181.

    Very good review, I agree with everything you have said in part 1 & 2. I recently sold my K12 speakers and decided to upgrade to the K12.2. They are still a good speaker but if you have the K12 there is not the noticeable sound improvement that I was expecting. If you have a perfectly good pair of K12 speakers stick with them. I did get a reasonable price when I sold my K12's so it's not to much of a big deal, I just have the latest/newer model. Just a bit of a disappointment that they did not give me the extra power I was after, and the build quality just doesn't seem quite so sturdy. But all in all still one of the best speakers on the market of this class.

    Has QSC ever heard the phrase, "If it ain't broke DONT FIX IT!!" That original K-12 was simple with its controls. The new 12.2 is a pain in the ass and anytime you deal with a digital screen, there is always problems. Stupid complexity. Just like "Apple" doing away with a headphone jack on its phones. Come on QSC...

    • @monkeyattack44

      That was my impression at first as well. However after becoming familiar with the digital screen I prefer it over the manual switches. Just personal preference.

    Good job Ethan. You gave it honest review. Hear in Florida people like outdoor events. The extra head room from these this past weekend worked out so good for me. I tried to max them out to the point to where I swore I was going to blow the sub out of the box lol. All the wedding stuff was done and I opened up the dance floor with a little 24KT and I swear the clarity of the vocals and the crispness of highs was really quality compared to K12's. I did exactly what you mentioned in your review. I sold one of my older sets to a fellow DJ friend who was using some older JBL's for 1100 with bags and added another 500 and ordered myself these that came with new bags for 1599 free shipping. Both of my old sets were out of warranty. Keep up the informative videos, you do a good job. If you ever need a idea of how to make a battery powered mic and battery powered speaker setup for remote locations, I found a solution. Been successful with it for over a year. Take care..

      Yeah I would love to open them up full throttle sometime, just need to find a good place to do it. So are there actually bags made specifically for the K12.2 or did you just buy more K12 bags?
      And thanks, I really only post on a topic when I see no one else has. But I do try to keep it honest and simple.
      And actually that would be great, especially for wedding ceremonies. Do you have a link to a video or something?

    I a/b'd the k10.2 vs k10 for over a month.
    If you're a DJ playing LOUD then absolutely the 10.2 is worth it over the k10. The K10s have that honkiness in the 400k range, which yes, you can eq it out, but it doesn't sound as full as the 10.2 when pushed, or as clear. Better headroom with the new models, which is really all you want. The 10.2 doesn't have that 400hz nastiness, but I did have to turn 1-2khz down just a hair, but not nearly as much as I was cutting the 400hz in the originals.
    I prefer the 10.2 in live bright mode, and then external eq some more 60-80hz. I feel like that's the most full and natural sound I could get out of these. Dance mode has more bass, but the rest of the eq didn't do it for me in the mids.
    Compared to the K10 in "deep" mode, the 10.2 was noticeably fuller and cleaner at louder volumes, with more bass. People say the old models have more bass- this is only true at low-moderate volumes. As you turn up, that extra bass isn't as noticeable and you hear that harshness of the speaker. The new models don't suffer from this. They have different characteristics in the mids, which are more forward and detailed. So it's up to you if you want that or the 400k honk with less headroom. At moderate volumes I think the difference is more preference.
    The other difference not mentioned in this video, is there is a small amount of hiss in the new model compared to the original. Probably not noticeable unless you're in a dead quiet room. Any level of hiss is a big pet peeve for me.

    • @monkeyattack44
      @monkeyattack44  6 лет назад

      Thanks for your comparison, having never heard the 10 or 10.2 I can't comment on those. I have noticed the hiss since filming this, which I can't get to go away :(

      The dance mode definitely has more bass, but I agree that it sounds a bit more muffled in the upper/high range. I would have thought the mid/high would still sound clear with more bass, but that is not what I perceive either. For me, with a sub, I leave it on LIVE mode. I havent tried live bright or default. Live sounded a bit cleaner and louder though.

      I haven't tried live bright but default is a great balance. Me personally, I look for every reason not to pack the sub when I gig. After this weekend using these K2's, I'm convinced that I don't need it anymore for smaller events or events that have a small dance floor and are in close proximity to my table.

      Man, I cant live without bass. :D These do indeed put out good bass, but it isnt bass I can feel by any means. It also doesnt seem to hit lower than 55hz or so.. for somewhat obvious reasons.. I mean it is a 12 after all and I have a studio 10 sub that hits quite a bit lower, as well as a 12 that is much lower. But, I did not expect this 12 to hit that low.. mostly good for mid bass range.. as long as it covers the 80hz and above good, which it does in spades, a sub covers the rest. I guess if the music you play doesnt need to hit hard/loud and low, this would work fine. I typically play top 40 and oddly enough I initially bought these to use for outside speakers for a movie setup.

    Night and day compared to the legacy K12s. The higher ends are much crispier, the bass is punchier. As someone who does not usually use subs, this difference is huge. I would recommend purchasing these and renting out the old K12s since they are nearly unblowable. You can make some extra money that way.

    I have to say, I have wanted to upgrade a few times but the k.2s have just not been a step up enough to warrant the change. I see djs liking them for the added clarity but if you are playing without subs, the originals have a better overall balance and bass. When I a/b’d them, I felt the originals just had a better bottom end. I agree, when pushed the originals get harsh but we are talking ear piercing volumes that no one ever should be at anyway.

    Thank you very much for your review of the new K 12.2’s and of the new set up! I did want to ask you one question that you didn’t seem to cover and that is due the new speakers still seem to leak mid low sound frequencies out of the back Lot the old K 12 did? Only it’s a complaint but I’ve heard buttons when they’re playing on stage saying about that when you drive the old K 12 hard you tended to get a lot of mid low that was coming out the back and you have this really weird kind of mid range rumble on stage from the back of the speakers and I wondered if that this of been nullified with the new K 12.2’s?

    • @monkeyattack44
      @monkeyattack44  4 года назад

      Yes they still have this issue, and having owned several brands over the years I would say that any speaker not in a wood enclosure will have this problem.

  • @tonyburt5
    @tonyburt5 7 лет назад

    Ethan, (and maybe even QSC, since I see you're on here) I am seeking a little advice.
    I just bought the K12s with a KW181 3 weeks ago. I knew the 12.2s were getting ready to be released, but I have 2 different buddies that have the same set so they can be paired (or tripled) together for larger gigs. We're not DJs. We use them for live performance and will always use a sub with them. I know the 12.2s will handle low frequencies better but I haven't seen a good comparison with the subs engaged (and lows removed from the speaker)
    I'm within my return window and can trade up to the K12.2s for pretty much free. If I trade up to the 12.2s, then I can no longer couple them with my buddies' systems, but I would get a potential dB boost from just 1 set of 12.2s and a sub. I will mainly use my (single) setup for my band for 80% of my gigs. It's only large outdoor gigs where I'd want multiple systems. I also realize the 1000W vs 2000W is somewhat just marketing (The 12s are 1000W continuous, 2000W peak and the 12.2s are 2000W peak), but the horn and driver have been redesigned and the power ratio is different.
    So, do you have any perspective on whether the "upgrade" is worth it if you're cutting the lows? Does it outweigh the ability to be able to couple them together? Do you have a sound meter that you've tested with to see where the dB increase sits? I really liked your other review which made me think about the amount of rubber reinforcement / padding on the originals compared to the 2s. I have bags / covers for everything. Just need to know if I should be considering returning my 12s for 12.2s.
    Thanks so much!

    • @monkeyattack44
      @monkeyattack44  7 лет назад

      Tony Burt Never thought someone would be asking for advice from QSC and myself in the same sentence lol. To answer your question, you shouldn't be coupling these speakers anyway, they're not meant to be arrayed and you get pretty harsh comb filtering. It is ok to angle them away from each other enough that they don't overlap, at which point using the k12s and k12.2's would be ok in my opinion, because they're not really working together so to speak. So yes, I would trade them in for the improved features and future proof-ness, but don't array them regardless. Did that actually answer the question?

    • @tonyburt5
      @tonyburt5 7 лет назад

      I meant that we do splay them for wider coverage, but QSC recommends against pairing / splaying K12s with K12.2s. From QSC's FAQ:
      Can I mix-and-match my legacy K and KW Series loudspeakers with newer K.2 loudspeakers?
      A. As long as they are separated by a short distance then yes, it will be fine. For example if you are using the new K.2 loudspeakers for your mains and KW or legacy Ks for your monitors, then this will work perfectly fine. What is not recommended however is attempting to “array” K.2 loudspeakers alongside K or KW Series within close proximity. For broader coverage, two or more speakers may be splayed
      (aimed so that the horizontal coverage of the speakers has minimum overlap). For best results, this should always be done with identical speakers.

    • @b3owu1f
      @b3owu1f 7 лет назад

      So I dont know a lot about using two or more (per side) vs the use of array speakers.. just getting in to all this myself. I would love to understand more why two+ side by side causes comb filtering (still dont fully understand how that happens). However, I will say that I finally set these up last night outside at a pool area.. I had 2 K12.2s, and an EVETX15SP sub. The sub is at 80hz, and I set the K2s at 80hz as well. All I can say is, they cranked. I have them at 0db, and my input to them is not nearly maxed, and you could clearly hear them 100 feet away. They were not super loud 100 feet away, but definitely enjoyable. I suspect.. never had speakers like these so not sure how much headroom they have, but I suspect I could have gone quite a bit louder.
      Which baffles me too..because I read lots of DJs saying they would only use these types of speakers for a 150 or so crowd, maybe up to 300.. but I know in the pool area we could fit over 1000 people around the area, and unless that muffles the sound greatly just because bodies are in the area, I assume they would all hear the sound well enough to enjoy it. Or maybe its my lack of understanding of how the sound changes and thus gets lower in volume in smaller confined spaces with more bodies.

    • @monkeyattack44
      @monkeyattack44  7 лет назад

      I think they're basically saying what I was saying, which is that it's ok to use them together as long as they're not arrayed, or otherwise too close together. But if you're using the k12.2's for your mains, and the k12s playing to the sides of the crowd, I don't see any problem with that. Because the sound from the two won't overlap. What would probably be a bad idea would be if you put the pair of k12's on say the right side and the k12.2's on the left side so it was unbalanced, with the left overpowering the right. But as long as it's "symmetrical" sound wise so to speak, I think that's fine.

    • @monkeyattack44
      @monkeyattack44  7 лет назад

      Bodies make a HUGE difference. What also makes a difference is the type of event. I use a pair of k12's with a pair of kw181's for weddings and it's plenty of output for even 500 people, because it's a wedding. But for a school dance/party/concert/etc I wouldn't want to use that same setup for 500 people. Humans are like sound sponges. Comb filtering is *basically* when two sound sources are too close together, the their frequencies start cancelling each other out, or boosting each other, so it ends up just sounding like garbage, but only in a few hotspots. So if you're sitting in the crowd at a concert, it could sound fine to one person but terrible to the person next to them.

    would you get 152s or k.2 12s?

      That depends, what's your budget? Will you be using them with an external sub? Will you be using them for mobile uses or permanent install?

      Dance mode is really bassy at low volume, but when you turn the volume up it balances out really well.

      I did some adjusting at the house and what I found is leave the eq on zero and use the dance mode and adjust the highs and mids from your controller or mixer. Can't believe I didn't do this from the start. I guess I expected it to be perfect out of the box. I realized that this is a complete new sound from the original and doing the side by side comparison was unrealistic.

      I wouldn't go so far as to say it's crap, it's certainly still I high quality speaker. It just doesn't seem AS well built as the K12, but overall I'd say it's a nicer speaker.

      Just to clarify, the legacy K Series and the K.2 Series are both made of the same ABS plastic material.
