Well you have the right basic idea Matty. I am Scottish, started playing golf at 4 years old. Scratch here is probably +2 elsewhere because of the weather. Always avoid rough! Always avoid bunkers! Keep it simple, middle of the green! Putt from around the greens. Keep your chin up, it’s great to be alive 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏌️‍♂️

It just takes a while to adjust to different types of courses. I've got a friend who moved from Scotland to the US and it took him a year to get back to shooting in the 70s here because shots that in Scotland are punished by rolling into rough are lost balls in the forest here because our rough doesn't catch the ball as much. When we'd go to a "links style" course, he'd tear it up. He eventually learned to hit the ball high.

This video shows why this is my favorite golf channel and why I look for new Matt content every morning before I get out of bed. This guy is HONEST about his game and sharing this is something most of us wouldn’t do. Even guys with way better than average ball striking/club head speed, and short-game like Matt have rounds like this. This reminds me that these things do happen, but there is always tomorrow. He is the playa-in-chief!

Am loving this !!! I had 6 years of playing in Thailand and came back to Scotland to find out I was actually shite at golf. Went from 8 to right up to god knows what.
The temperature is a big factor. You just cannot get loose enough and keep on getting tighter and more worked up.
This is also one of the reasons Scottish people swear so much and would describe you as a Fanny.

Played last week on a 2-day trip. Played really well on day 1. Had a terrible night’s sleep and completely had no touch on day 2. Played a few days later and shot my lowest round of the year. I totally relate to this video. All you can do is laugh. Golf is a crazy ride.

@@chrislaing8444 mood and sleep are definitely massive factors!! I shot my lowest round ever last year, after returning from a nice relaxing holiday in Portugal. Then 2 weeks later, after going back to work and doing some night shifts, put 20 strokes on that. You are right, you have to just try and laugh and enjoy the rollercoaster 😂

Thanks for making this video Matty. Today I shot a 97 (10 handicap) and I was pretty upset, honestly wanted to give up all afternoon. It was 40 degrees F, wind blowing hard, raining, and the rough on the course was so thick I was constantly losing balls in plain sight. I hate swinging in multiple layers. My swing gets restricted and releasing the club becomes very clumsy. I'm just glad I'm not alone, although I really am considering not hitting the course as much as we get closer to Winter. I've had a personal goal of hitting a 300 yard drive for almost two years, I think it's a good time to just focus on pure strength.

Well done Matty - Scottish golf is tough. The cold and the heavier conditions mean yardages are less favourable particularly somewhere like Gleneagles. It is one of the most beautiful settings in the world to play golf though so if you aren't at your best you can always enjoy the vistas.

    Golf is a crazy game.
It’s all about perspective. I’m a 37 handicap, and yes, I’m serious. I’ve played 18 rounds this year, since July, and I love the game.
To shoot in the high 80’s on a course like this would be the greatest day of my golfing life.
Felt like garbage to you. 😂
Unbelievably, there are playas out there at their current spot in the journey who would trade me for my crappy game!
As you know, it gets better, and it’s never really that bad if you’re playing and getting more experiences.

This reminds me. I played knebworth in Hertfordshire recently . One of my playing partners was saying that he had a hcp of 6 whilst being a member there. My hcp is 14 but I play a barkway, a longer and windier course. Knebworth has no rough to speak of and very generous fairways and so I was able to take him to the cleaners. Your hcp reflects your game at your optimum under the conditions you play. knebworth is a lovely and friendly track. I wish I could afford to be a member there as I’d think that I would be a single digit golfer too!

I do want to thank you for the inspiring Coldplay ripoff music. It's just what I needed.
Seriously, I feel your pain. Every time I really look forward to a nice golf outing (something other than the usual home course rounds) I play like shyza. Golf can really deflate a man. I used to think the "mental game" aspect of golf I heard everyone talking about was for the tour pros and their psychologists, but I now realize it is MOSTLY mental. If you're not in the right frame of mind or you're thinking about something else, it's going to be Whoopi Goldberg out there.

I'm currently playing a HC around 16... I don't HAVE an A-Game! LOL. It looks like a beautiful course, though, even if it was colder than you'd planned for. The greens really seem challenging (I don't remember seeing you hit so many 3-putts)! Remember, for many of us playas, our mid 30s are "the good old days" that we reminisce about... getting old sucks, but remember that it's a privilege not granted everyone. Being tired makes concentrating and maintaining a good mood difficult, but sadly, there's not much you can do about either on the course but to keep that in mind and try to stay positive; you've advised us about judging distances as the course goes on and concentration is the same- focus decreases over time.

In a round like this I feel it's very important to focus on the positives, and as you said, you realy hit some very good approach shots. We take the good and move on, know that we can do better and next day come back stronger. External factors like cold and sleep are going to affect and limit our ability to play to the best of our potential, but we take our own singular peaks in these situations. Awesome approach shots mate.

Interesting comment about the impact of turf. I live in North Texas but visited England in April. Immediately I was taking beaver-tail divots and striping the ball like never before. Come back to Texas and the slightest fatness is penalized by the clay/dark-soil turf with very short Bermuda grass. Turf definitely affects course-to-course differentiation for the individual that course ratings don’t necessarily take into account.

Matt, I'm a sports scientist, and both those things: no sleep and not feeling comfortable with your movement weigh heavily on performance. I hate feeling constricted. I started using a gilet/vest because my range of movement feels better than with a golf winter jacket. As for sleep - not too much can you do when the fire alarm goes off. However, I have had my international-level athletes use autogenic training, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided meditation to get to deep sleep quicker if they have problems sleeping. Good luck on the tour.

Scotland, the home of golf, and you're dressed to go snow skiing. Lack of sleep and f-ing cold, you did well. The pros NEVER play in this. 🙂

Cold, wet and tired is no way to play a round. Sometimes it's just as fine to grab a seat in the clubhouse and _watch_ someone else play.

That course looks hard af. Greens especially. No shame in some of that downheartedness. It's not all Guns n' Roses out here.

That shot at 7:59 makes it worth it though.

Playing on lack of sleep is awful. Mental mistakes come fast and furious. Reading putts is impossible. The only thing you can do is grin and bear it. The next round will be a breeze, though
