  • Former productivity commissioner Peter Harris says Rex Airlines ceasing flights to regional communities will be a “serious blow” to those economies.
His comments come after the airline entered voluntary administration on Tuesday.
“Those regional communities are not trivial - they’re very important to the economy of New South Wales,” Mr Harris told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood.

"Those regional economies are not trivial - I would expect the NSW Govt to take an active interest in this" - and yet all they've done is absolutely nothing up to the point the sole regional operator is on the brink of collapse. If they were even remotely doing their job, they would have been asking for answers from Rex why they don't pay their crews a liveable wage. Lowest paid pilots in Australia. Asking them why a significant portion of their fleet was grounded with no engines. Asking Rex why can't they attract or retain pilots or engineers. Now the entire mess is about to fall over and suddenly it's a priority... Words fail me.

REX has be overcharging customers with expensive ticket fees and held some regional areas to ransom of leaving reginal area if local councils try to bring in other competitive airlines in for some time now; should have been investigated sooner.

Even blind Freddy could see this coming. The goverment is too focused on overseas interests to worry about Australian essential services.

Airfares are too cheap. Wages for Aircraft Engineers are in the toilet, and have been on the slide for decades. There's just not enough revenue from airfares.

According to Virgin Australia they have received calls from 30,000 passengers requesting yo be rebooked from Rex Airlines.
30,000 passengers is a lot considering Rex has just 9 Boeing 737's in operation.

160-180 passengers per plane, 9 planes so 1440 seats
30,000 divided by 1440 is 20.8 round it off to 21.
21 flights isn't much, How many a day do they make?
Probably do 30,000 in a few days.

That is the crux of the problem. Those planes are expensive to acquire, I am sure you have to pay a 737 pilot and cabin crew more than you pay a SAAB40 crew, landing slots at the big airports are expensive, fuel costs are higher, landing weight charges are higher, servicing costs are higher. Why not acquire bigger twin props and expand the regional network?

@@MsJubjubbird greed and corruption, they were gambling on the liquidation of Virgin during Covid so REX used their federal government bailout to set up the major city routes but that didn't end up happening. If it ain't broke don't fix it, REX should've stuck to the regional routes, use the money to improve their regional fleet or improve regional airports to get exclusive access
