I always thought company's made money to stay in business... and I see so many subscribers complain (for real) they didn't get their full money's worth... If every subscriber got their exact amount they paid or got more then what they paid how does the company make money??? granted if you pay $40 and you get a box worth $5 maybe be a little upset... but still BUSINESSES NEED TO MAKE MONEY.
I don't have this subscription, but I do have mystery tackle box, and it is all about introducing you to something you have never used or in this case played. Yeah there is a lot of over stock in there and filler but sometimes you get something you read about or never seen before and it forces you out of your box.
You kinda had me going until the reversal 😆 I always tell my kids not to ask a question unless they are prepared to get an answer they don’t like, and the same applies here. Don’t invest in a mystery box if you aren’t prepared to get something you don’t want. Being disappointed half the time builds character 👍

VGM - Satirical box opening - Captain Algebra solves the equation for those not understanding what they sign up for. Never knew Quartet got a console port release. Used to play the arcade cabinet back in the day at Aladdins Castle Arcade with a buddy. Cheers

If you hate aliens you'll love Quartet! The first line on the back of the box for Quartet. The game is a port of the arcade side scrolling shooter, but only two player because the SMS doesn't support more than two controllers.
Nicely played, Cap. I've never subscribed to VGM, but based on what I've seen from your videos, you definitely get a variety of games from them. Also, nice score with Quartet! That's an old favorite, although since it lacks two of the characters from the arcade, maybe it should have been called Duet. Or they could have stuck with the Mark III title, Double Target.
The variety is why I love VGM. I've gotten some games that I would never have picked up on my own that have been a lot of fun. Quartet seems pretty cool so far, I had no idea it was an arcade game. I'll have to track down a box and manual eventually.

I choose to not count the value cuz in my mind I’m paying for the surprise. Sometimes you get crap, sometimes you get gold. I feel the latter usually makes up for the former. But I have to take breaks from the boxes now and then when I need to.
VGM is a Christmas gift I buy for myself each month. I agree with you, I never talk about value. If you average everything up you are breaking even. My favorite thing is getting games I did not think about. You may love Rainbow Six on the N64 and I bet you have passed it a hundred times in a game store. Now you have an excuse to try it out.

lol, I always expect close to values of price I pay for the box which I get 5 games for 44.99. I never say anything unless I don’t get close cause over time boxes work themselves out and I show the prices each month to show that . VGM people are great people. I respect them .
Not quite sure why I was called out in this video...especially when 99% of my videos for VGM are positive? The thumbnail you showed was from a video where financially speaking, it wasn't just low, it was extrememly low, in which I also stated that you can't win them all and that it was what it was, I also brought up how I wasn't even going to message them about it. Joe however, always wants to make things right and even personally went and hand selected another title to send me. I didn't ask for it, and even told him that wasn't necessary, but that's just the kind of person he is. I've also spoken to him and spent time with him on multiple occasions and have never had a single bad thing to say about him. Does VGM always get it right? No, no company does. But they do a damn good job and they always do what they can to take care of their customers which I mention in every single VGM video I do. I'm not sure if the "for the clicks" comment was directed at channels like mine (can only assume so since my channel is one specifically called out...), but that's not the case at all. There's no bad vibes between myself or VGM and there never has been. So much so that Joe and I were even talking about how it would be funny to take a shot at the trolls that always say "you know them so you only get good games" by having Joe do a cameo in a video. I've never had any beef with any creators on the platform, nor do I care to. Always available to talk and to clarify any misconceptions, gotta admit though, this felt done in poor taste. Lol But in all seriousness, I wish this video came out sooner before I sent out an email to them for the value of my box 💀💀 At first I was fine with being under valued this month and my one complaint was them sending out games for a genre I didn't like that I emailed them about a month prior which they said sorry about and sent out replacements. But then reading comments like "you've been robbed, I'm sorry they sent you crap games" got to my head and then I emailed them an additional time saying I was disappointed with the value of my box to which they sent out more games on top of the two they replaced And now being extremely humbled by you Im now feeling bad about asking for more games when i should've listened to my first notion of just being fine with it. Hell I remember seeing a video of this guy complaining that they sent him "bad stuff" and going on about how he has no games as he's just starting out and that vgm should do the justice thing to do and give him a "good" game from the get go and I disagreed with that because I know it's a mystery service, plus he didn't email them a list to curate his box.. 😑 Now granted yes people are allowed to have their opinions on getting something like a Mario or a Zelda and the value on what they paid for, but if you're just going over the top mad about it without thinking about it just stop the service and go to eBay or Mercari because at that point it's a nitpick and you're just making a good service look bad to people for no reason. The breakup finally happened, hopefully you jump to the Retro Game Treasure side of things.............. Totally on board with this one, I remember at one point when I was doing unboxings, someone decided to tell me how much the games were, and how much the entire bundle was, and I'm like "I don't care" for me, this was a way to get some cool games, and I've been able to get some cool games like Snake, Rattle, and Roll on the NES, and Arkanoid, and many others, they've even involuntarily contributed towards a collecting goal, I wanted more Tony Hawk games, and they ended up sending me Tony Hawk Underground 2 and that was really cool, didn't even need to tell them I was trying to get some of them. Now when it comes to loose games, I've told you before, if it's cartridge based games, I don't care, the boxes don't matter much to me, but for a disc based game, I would like the case, but even then it's no big deal, I could either find an blank DVD case and print out my own label (Black label preferably) now the condition argument is super lame, I understand we want things to be in pristine condition, but these games are super old that have been from home to home, who knows what they went through before they came to you, you can't just walk into any retro game store, or pawn store, and expect every used game to be like new, and also I get sometimes these games just don't work for whatever reason, but they've always sent a replacement to me. Of course this is subjective, but sometimes you aren't going to get good games from them, and what I've done is I'd toss them into my trade in pile, and use them to get games I do want, or hey maybe someone on the internet will get Super Metroid and not like it, and someone might be like "Hey, could we do a trade?" so there's many ways to exchange them for things you want, but if there's a game that doesn't seem interesting, give it a chance, you never know it could be great, and the worst that could happen is the game sucks, and you move on. Great video Cap, and honestly I'm kinda pushing myself to start doing them again, maybe in 2024? By the way, Lego Batman is really good, and the second one is actually my favorite so, good box

I have tried multiple other services as well. Personally I think they are the best service of the current ones available. If I have ever had issues with missing games, broken games or duplicates that were their fault they have fixed it and quickly fixed it too. Value is subjective but from a monetary standpoint only. I have came out ahead far more often than behind. Probably at a 2 or 3 times ratio. The biggest thing a lot of people don’t understand is that these are mystery boxes and they are a business. If you want specific games you need to just go buy them. If you want specific condition you need to go buy them. As far as the bigger tubers using them for views. I don’t think it’s a problem as long as they are not being disrespectful to VGM or anyone else. Well said Cap! 🤙🏻
I agree that it is the best one of there. When I was looking at getting one of these mystery boxes I spent a lot of time watching VGM unboxings and Retro Game Treasure unboxings and VGM always seemed to be better games. I know that VGM isn't for everyone, but I've always enjoyed the boxes which is why I continue to get them every month.

That's the point, I was doing exactly what others do that is ridiculous when it comes to mystery boxes. Im not going to lie ive stopped watching certain vgm youtubers because all they do is complain about the box. I was afraid id have to stop watching yours. But as soon as i saw the first part of the video i knew what you were doing and was laughing the rest of the of it

I was struggling not to laugh out loud. I need warning labels so I don't watch this stuff on break. The rainbow six game could be interesting. I haven't played much of any of them though. Next time rip on quartet some more. It's a port of an arcade game that was four player and when Sega ported it they needed to limit it to two. So how dare they send you a game with a misleading name. That being said it is a fun game. I haven't beat it yet.

Totally on board with this one, I remember at one point when I was doing unboxings, someone decided to tell me how much the games were, and how much the entire bundle was, and I'm like "I don't care" for me, this was a way to get some cool games, and I've been able to get some cool games like Snake, Rattle, and Roll on the NES, and Arkanoid, and many others, they've even involuntarily contributed towards a collecting goal, I wanted more Tony Hawk games, and they ended up sending me Tony Hawk Underground 2 and that was really cool, didn't even need to tell them I was trying to get some of them. Now when it comes to loose games, I've told you before, if it's cartridge based games, I don't care, the boxes don't matter much to me, but for a disc based game, I would like the case, but even then it's no big deal, I could either find an blank DVD case and print out my own label (Black label preferably) now the condition argument is super lame, I understand we want things to be in pristine condition, but these games are super old that have been from home to home, who knows what they went through before they came to you, you can't just walk into any retro game store, or pawn store, and expect every used game to be like new, and also I get sometimes these games just don't work for whatever reason, but they've always sent a replacement to me. Of course this is subjective, but sometimes you aren't going to get good games from them, and what I've done is I'd toss them into my trade in pile, and use them to get games I do want, or hey maybe someone on the internet will get Super Metroid and not like it, and someone might be like "Hey, could we do a trade?" so there's many ways to exchange them for things you want, but if there's a game that doesn't seem interesting, give it a chance, you never know it could be great, and the worst that could happen is the game sucks, and you move on. Great video Cap, and honestly I'm kinda pushing myself to start doing them again, maybe in 2024? By the way, Lego Batman is really good, and the second one is actually my favorite so, good box

Had to add to my comment after seeing your overview at the end. VGM is a great company. I love a good mystery box. I have been with them for over 3 years now myself. I have tried multiple other services as well. Personally I think they are the best service of the current ones available. If I have ever had issues with missing games, broken games or duplicates that were their fault they have fixed it and quickly fixed it too. Value is subjective but from a monetary standpoint only. I have came out ahead far more often than behind. Probably at a 2 or 3 times ratio. The biggest thing a lot of people don’t understand is that these are mystery boxes and they are a business. If you want specific games you need to just go buy them. If you want specific condition you need to go buy them. As far as the bigger tubers using them for views. I don’t think it’s a problem as long as they are not being disrespectful to VGM or anyone else. Well said Cap! 🤙🏻
I agree that it is the best one of there. When I was looking at getting one of these mystery boxes I spent a lot of time watching VGM unboxings and Retro Game Treasure unboxings and VGM always seemed to be better games. I know that VGM isn't for everyone, but I've always enjoyed the boxes which is why I continue to get them every month.

Great episode, all great points, I'm in the same opinion as you. I do these boxes for the fun and excitement. Plus, nice to get something in the mail you can count on that is fun instead of bills and other bad news.

That's the point, I was doing exactly what others do that is ridiculous when it comes to mystery boxes. I don't care who is more successful on RUclips because I do this for a hobby and don't put the time into it to grow faster. I am also not a partner, I've just been subscribed for a long time. Im not going to lie ive stopped watching certain vgm youtubers because all they do is complain about the box. I was afraid id have to stop watching yours. But as soon as i saw the first part of the video i knew what you were doing and was laughing the rest of the of it

Quartet was a great arcade game. The port should have been called Duo instead 😂.

The rainbow six game could be interesting. I haven't played much of any of them though.
Next time rip on quartet some more. It's a port of an arcade game that was four player and when Sega ported it they needed to limit it to two. So how dare they send you a game with a misleading name.
That being said it is a fun game. I haven't beat it yet.
