@@jesusr925 Not exactly - in terms of hardware NES and Famicom are basically the same. The reason of difference between JP and US version is that Nintendo outside of Japan didn't allow to use 3rd party mappers (chips installed inside the cartridge that allow to make more complex games) - they only allowed mappers that were made by Nintendo themselves, which at the time weren't as capable as one that Konami used in JP version of Contra

Nintendo of Japan allowed companies to use their own custom mappers - chipsets which primarily assign sections of physical memory (storage and RAM) on the cartridge to the NES console's address spaces. They were initially meant to simply allow larger games to be made for the console, but later began to encompass larger sets of features such as quickly swapping between sets of tile data and even FDS-style sound expansion (exclusively on Japanese Famicom consoles due to overseas NES consoles moving the sound expansion pin to the bottom of the NES). This game, for example, used the VRC2b mapper. However, Nintendo of America (and Nintendo of Europe) prohibited this and only allowed companies to use Nintendo's own first-party mappers, so Konami opted to go with the UNROM mapper for overseas releases instead as it was cheap and likely more familiar for Konami's programmers. NoA's strict practices at the time probably have at least something to do with 1983.
oh hell ye! I love the Japanese Version, so much extra stuff.
So awesome!
So glad this version have adding to collection.
Nice run Pete. Always enjoy your play throughs.
Thank you, really appreciate that!
I had no idea the Japanese version had extra stuff in it.
I had no idea either until I was given this cart, but glad I found out!
That's because the Famicom was able to handle it meanwhile the NES doesn't.

Wait... Why is this version so different and has a better graphic from the US version? I'm confused
The US version didn't have VRC2 chip which allowed for graphic enhancements (source: konami.fandom.com/wiki/Contra_(video_game) )
@@Pete_Hahn Oh so that's why. Thanks for explaining
they tried to shrink the cost. the rom chip for US version was 128Kb the japan version was 256K
I HAD PLAY CONTRA JAPAN GAME IN 1989
Because you from Japan?

I used a converter, you plug in the Famicom cart into the converter then the converter to the NES. Here is a picture:

Makes no sense why they had to strip down games for the United States.
Because of Konami’s chip which was only used in Japan.

not really, especially since I've been playing it for 30+ years
Man they really butchered the american version. That sucks :/
very unfortunate that they did this to the USA version. At least the main characters weren't turned into robots like the European versions.
