- Subaru of America, Inc. has released a new RUclips video of the 2011 Subaru WRX STI setting an all-time course record for the historic Isle of Man TT Mountain Course. The 5 minute 25 second video highlights in graphic detail the speed and drama surrounding rally driver Mark Higgins' lap that averaged 115.356 MPH. After the run, Higgins talks through the "moment" at Brey Hill when he momentarily loses, and then regains, control of the WRX STI at more than 150 MPH.
Driving a US specification 2011 Subaru WRX STI, Higgins achieved speeds of 162 MPH and a lapped time of 19 minutes 37 seconds over the 37-mile track, navigating more than 200 corners.
"This is one of the most daunting tracks I have ever driven, and the most terrifying," said Higgins, a Manx native. "We were only able to get two practice runs and on our second practice I had the biggest "moment" of my career. We had a passenger on the run and so coming into Bray Hill at more than 150 MPH, the extra weight compressed the suspension more than on previous runs and shifted the Subaru to the left and then right as I corrected--it was a real tank slapper. The whole thing went by so quickly that we never slowed below 110 MPH, and then we were back on the power. It was amazing and the helicopter shots really show just how hairy it really was."
The WRX STI was a production US spec car running a standard 305 HP turbocharged boxer engine. Some safety modifications were made. The Subaru was equipped with a Lifeline fire suppression system, Hockley Motorsports roll cage, motordrive competition seats, Mintex brake pads (but stock calipers and rotors), and a louder open exhaust to warn spectators of the on-coming car. The speed limiter was turned off to allow a higher maximum speed; off-the shelf Tien springs and dampers were added to accommodate the numerous high-speed jumps on the circuit, sending the WRX STI almost four feet off the ground. The car ran on street legal Pirelli P Zero Trofeo tires. Авто/Мото
I live on the Isle of Man and i can tell you now: an F1 car chassis would probably break before it finishes a lap because of the roads.
That's how I drive home when the wife agrees to sex
+smifbbx and that's how i drive when i hear you are on your way home
@@jwatters9868 Points awarded.
i love how you used all the footage you had for that massive save! thank you it was brilliant
considering this is a stock suby with a cage uprated dampers and slicks ,no engine mods heavier than std and he can lap at 117 mph amazin, mark higgins that was hell of a lap
the New record is held by a 600hp subaru
@@craneflaw2019 rofl ;) love it
@@craneflaw2019with him driving it at speeds of over 177mph
FAKE! There is no way that car has only 305hp. I added all of those stickers up and came to around 420hp
they took the exhaust off... so add 69,000 HP
Stev3 so true nice see mark out on the big "wide" islands roads for a bit
of a drive round check out 1994 MANX RALLY SS7 BRANDYWELL IN CAR
WITH MARK HIGGINS yes the guys a driving god and thats from a bike nut
and mark not to bad on one of them as well thing is mr subaru how much the
car and how much the man ???? eg m3/m5 anyone ??
Tony Pate i probably would try it with an e39 m5 :D about 30 min lap time :D you are also winnie if you reach the finish line alive i guess :D
At 1:00 he was going 150 and still managed to pull it out. He even says shortly after "I don't know how I did that." That still gets my adrenaline jumping.
Revisiting this video yet again after a year or 2, my god what an unforgettable save. This is one for the ages, rally skill coming in so clutch it's dummy
Amazing recovery, ppl say it was electronics that saved him. NO! See how far he was turning that wheel to get some deflection/grip then power down and pulled out of it! A professional driver. Do NOT try this at home...lol.
Great save!
Greatest car on earth!
The cinematography was fantastic. Captured not just what racing looks like on the outside but when you look into his eyes and all he sees is the road ahead, that's when the video pulled me out of my chair and shoved me in the driver's seat! Absolutely brilliant editing! It captured the powerful finesse of the car as well as the passion of driving one. Just awesome....
I am a proud owner of an 06' STI, still a great joy to watch videos on! Cheers!
Nice Save Ken @ 4:30
But Monsieur!...he has TWO extra wheels...& even then he almost 'packed-it-in' at Bray Hill!
Shite I love the moment he puts the pressure on the acceleration back again, Subaru bursting a low pitched sound and regaining speed. Amazing moment.
Thanks for the link!
And 5:10 for the helicopter view.
What's the point in over laying the speedo at points where it is clearly bolloks . Down shifts to 3rd and he's still doing .135 mph ?
Yes an at 160mph has not out running the chopper, good spot
Great video editing
Loved the recap of "the moment" a great surprise in already captivating video.
Says this is a US specification car - do they know how to change gear over there?
Lol yes
I bet the fq400 could beat this time.
i doubt that .
***** Why? FQ400 is tuned for tarmac, and if it would be any faster it would travel back in time.
i didnt knew that car was 80000$ .totally not worth it in my mind. You can instead get a wrx or a evo and spend on it that much money and get it 500+ hp easy
***** It is way too expencieve for the tune it has, for that amount of money one can build an even faster car, it has intercooler, piping, new turbo, new tb exhaust, and some suspension tune and weight reduction.
Nagy Szilard well thats what i said . that car is not worth 80000$
Respect for mad skills! Made that catch look easy!! Speaks volumes about the cars handling too, being able to catch it!
Great video!
Great recovery!
awesome vid, and what a save at the bottom of bray hill, i'm a bike man through and through but you have to take your hat off for that
After all these years Subaru engines still sound like their airplane roots. Awesome video. Thanks for posting it.
Great control by the driver, good video.
Mark's "moment" is absolutely the most terrifying thing I've seen in a long time. That was definately the save-of-the-century. Skill, luck, devine intervention, probably a healthy dose of all three. Fan-fucking-tastic!
Amazing recovery!
Nice driving skills 👍🏻👍🏻
Totally awesome!
The Dip at Road Atlanta was one of the scariest corners I've ever taken in my life and I was only going through there at 150 of so.
200 mph would be freaking insane.
very nice run
I saw the bumper cam perspective for where he got crossed up at the bottom of the hill, I thought he was toast.
The aerial footage shows just how sideways he got, just brilliant control keeping it together and gathering it all back up, absolutely topnotch driving.
nice catch!
i want to try this! Good save at end!
That save that he pulled off was absolutely amazing. Great car control.
that was a sick save!!
That is just quite amazing. What a driver. What a car. Thanks for posting this video and letting is share the experience.
nice catch bro
By watching this.. i am proud to be an owner of a subaru sti tsurugi edition❤🇯🇵
EPIC....great video, AMAZING Driver and THE BOSS RECOVERY!!
Make me want to take my 2012 STI with a stage 1 tune out for a serious spin in the snow. Awesome video.
Good save!!!
awesome recovery
Very impressive driving! I have to admit, being in the passenger seat would have been scary but amazing! And only two practice runs, even more impressive!
Really impressive driving there. Wow.
Great save at the end
Amazing car control to correct the near 'off' !!
Great video, great Car and great Driver!
amazing control!
thanks for the ride.
nice save !!!
Fantastic save, that mis-matched downshift says it all. One busy guy.
That was an amazing driving.
Amazing driving.
One of the best car videos ever
The stinkeye sti sedan is the most underrated STI so far.
Thanks for the video, Subaru! I wanted for a long time to see a modern sport car going all out in the Manx course. Awesome peformance!!!
There should be other cars !! I think bikes still more dangerous!!
But that was a great display of skill and heart.
Checking in from Trinidad and Tobago gr8 driving
I JUST LOVE THE SOUND IT MAKES
Great driving and just shows how good the bikes are to get round in 18 minutes.
Big respect to Higgins for recovering that one at 150 mph. What makes that even tougher is that you cannot lean on throttle to pull you out at all, as you are coming in 6th gear, at the time of roll the engine speed is to low for any significant pull power! Kudos to Higgins, you could see the seriousness of it in his eyes and face!
Holy crap even I held my breath when that went side ways.
the mods are in the description. its got pads, "off the shelf" tien coilovers, an exhaust and better tires then factory. the cage helps with rigidity im sure as well.
Damn, that was a really good recovery.
Great vid! Really puts in to context John McGuiness`s practice lap at 130mph AVG (manx TT 2012)... He hit over 190MPH at the Sulby speed trap!
Haha! that man corrected himself so well, his front tires didn't even lose their line! Well played, sir.
Wow hell of a driver and what a save!
Interesting Tony Pond set a record in 1990 in a Rover and achieved 160mph back then, and he only had two wheel drive.
What I like is that it did not change the engine and tests the true power of 2.5 boxer!!!! NICE VIDEO AND NICE STI
He looks so calm!
that is incredible. doing what this man does is worth just for the intense feelings alone. I've felt a fraction of what he felt with my '96 subaru impreza on gravel road at a little over 100km/h, but I doubt I'll go anywhere near the skill level of this guy. amazing
That was some crazy shit skill driving at those speeds!! Dang!!
WOW! Awsome vid- I wish Subaru would run the Solver State Classic in Nevada sometime...
What a save! at over 150MPH at Bray Hill had me off my seat just watching it damn!
Amazing...salute bro
Just appreciate the skill. Amazing ability
To people complaining about editing, full version is on subu's channel
Our 21 year old Subaru is awesome,so hard to imagine a nice one like this to actually drive like that
Skill! Props.
3:26 They say it's not sped up but, LOOK AT THAT HELICOPTER!
3:07 is just beautiful to watch ....the raging WRX comes shooting out of the shadows into the sun as seen from the heli-cam.
That segment will definitely make it to an ad at some point.
That last bit of absolutely fantastic. I got an adrenalin rush just watching him correct himself going about 130MPH. Incredible driving skills to say the least!
Awesome control to bring it back from beyond the limit
that was pretty damn good!
I'm a biker and I love the TT , but I've got a lot of respect for Mark Higgins, a brilliant rally driver and Isle of Man legend. That lap is not slow, and a car is much wider than a bike so it was a very impressive effort, you've much less road available.
That sound, wow!!!!
FREAKING AWESOME!!!
Love it! There's just something about the sound of that boxer engine that makes me tingle all over, LOL!
And the recovery, bravo! I'd say in a lesser car you'd have eaten that wall.
Excellent video!
What a great save an what a great scooby!
Anyone who can average over 110mph at the TT is a bad ass. Weather it be in a car or on a bike, it takes mad skills and balls of steel.
Props to Mr. Higgins and Subaru for an amazing run.
Great Pilot !!
Please upload the full length video..
So speed doesn't always kill... Great sound, btw.
Great skills
My dream car used to be a lambo
But after a full year of being a car enthusiast it became a 2004 subie wrx sti
Gotta love that boxer 4!!
I honestly am amazed at how fast that car was going the entire time. Simply incredible.
Amazing driver! Wow
you didnt even bother to read the description, did you? great job on speculating..
I was there watching it in person and I can say this guy can drive.
@3000ST1 exactly. the bikes are insane, i can't say i've seen anything crazier than the bikes, but man mark higgins can drive...so happy he's on the subie team..
of course you have to consider the fact that this was a stock subaru, not just any ridiculously expensive sports car.
Did you bother to read the description?
