It always bothered me how people would downplay Big Boi like he was just Andre's weed carrier. I've said this before and I'll say it again, Big Boi is just as good of a rapper as 3 Stacks.
I think 3000 was more palatable for the artsy/experimental types lol That's not to say that 3 Stacks is a punk or weenie at all, but Big Boi definitely kept it more "hood" and straightforward than 3 stacks. But this what made them so great. The group is basically is yin and yang.
Fantastic record! Ive listened to there first five records over the last few years and they are really something special. Last i heard they are reuniting for a tour and new album :-) I'm excited!
This album is the comfiest hip-hop record ever made. The deep, bottomless oceanic production, the disembodied scratches, the space theme, the melancholic vibe and the personal lyrics. It continues to blow my mind that andre and big boi were only 21 when they made this album. Just fucking geniuses, nothing else to say.

Aquemini will always be better than ATLiens imo but ATLiens is still a classic. Outkast has arguably the best discography in Hip-Hop and one of the best of all music
Rappatiligoe0419 agreed. outkast & the roots have the best discographies. I would give the upper hand to the roots since they have 2-3x as many albums and they are all great
A tribe called quest never had an album that wasn`t above average in some way, Run The Jewels will get in that argument with a couple more records as good as the first 3

you literally could have chosen any Outkast album and you couldn't have gone wrong. I would have preferred Aquemini or Stankonia but I still love ATLiens
always liked this one more than aquemini, which is definitely also a classic, but as far as cohesiveness and vibe goes, atliens takes it. it doesn't waste your time with skits, it's got insane song concepts, and the melancholic tone of the album, specifically the production, is unique in hip hop to this day. smoothest rap album of all time
/I just bought the album on vinyl. I remember hearing the album back in the day, but I don't really remember it. I love how you review albums because you just talk about it and don't really play a lot of the music in the background. I might be the only one out there, but sometimes I'll buy an album and wait to hear it fully on vinyl before I can fully talk and tell people about the album! My point is I didn't want to hear any of the tracks in the review. I just wanted to hear what you had to say about it. Overall great review. 9 out of 10. You made me more hyped about hearing the album again after so many years. It should arrive tomorrow. Keep doing these kinds of reviews!!!
This has been one of my favorite albums of all time. The way it kicks off with Two Dope Boyz sets the table for the first half of this album. I absolutely love the scratching on Wheels of Steel. I was in high school when it came out and I think this is the album that pulled me away from the west coast G Funk music into a entirely different world of Hip Hop. It has definitely stood the test of time. If I could pick two duos from 20 years ago to come back and drop albums this year... Outkast and Black Star.

This was beautiful and quite accurate, Anthony. ATLiens was the first album I ever bought. One thing to consider about the lull you mentioned at 11:45, I believe this album was made to be a cassette tape. I first bought it on cassette and Wheelz of Steel was the end of side A. I think the back end was decidedly more experimental, mellower, and featured more of their label mates.
You have gotten very good at captivating the listener while being concise and purposeful with your reviews. The result of over 5 years of doing this I suppose, but it really shows in your classic reviews.
I like how you contextualize the album with the time in which it was released. It helps putting everything in perspective and understanding the album better.

I believe that makes young people wanna know more about the origins of Hip Hop. And as an old school Hip Hop fan I would like to see you reviewing more old school Hip Hop albums (especially The Pharcyde- Bizarre Ride II)
ATLiens was that album that REALLY paved the way for these two and acted like a bridge into the next level of their career. I feel like while Southernplayalistic was INCREDIBLE and NOTHING sounding like it in 1994, if they never evolved from that album, then they would have most likely not become the ICONS they are today. People forget that Outkast is one of the few if not the ONLY a hip hop group to TRULY balance commercial AND critical success. I mean we all have our own favorite Outkast album, but the facts are that ALL of them are multi-platinum AND pretty well received. This is a testament to not only the genius of Outkast but the DUNGEON FAMILY as well. But damn you know Atlanta was on FIRE when this dropped shiiiiit 96 Olympics, the upcoming Freaknik '97, etc. Damn I love the 90s lol
I had this album on replay for years, I didn't realise why it appealed to me so much until i matured into adulthood, Andre's versus are somewhat poetic , the content was mature. I listen to some of the 90's hip hop now and realise how basic the content was, even basic MC's had value though; when you look at early hip-hop collectively at least. Thanks for the reviews man, love the channel. If you ever have time could you make a video that lists recommendations of great albums in other genres for those who love hip-hop. I know this is vague but I would like to give other genres such as punk a listen but don't know where to start. I know taste is subjective so this may be a hard request. Thanks again.
i have bin only bin subscribed for less than than a year to you brother but this is the first time ive commented , i see all your content . your always spot on. much love to you and your passion. misael from mexico
in my opinion this was outkast best album .. from start to finish i still dont skip their tracks i just let the album play . as far as their other albums they have a couple good songs here and there and then their albums just got weird atleast for me lol. but ATliens is straight up classic
Great review and review choice! During the mid 90's it meant a lot to have Black rap artists entertaining us with beats and themes other than being paid major $$$ to glorify killing in the community because of the poverty we all were experiencing. Pharcyde, Tribe Called Quest, Arrested Development... some of these groups were a beacon for Black youngsters at the time who weren't just fans but actually dealt with the realities the group rapped about. Outkast's music depicted the artistry, tragedy and positive affirmation. Appreciated the stroll down memory lane!
im a HUGGGE outkast fan... i love all their albums except idlewild, which still has its gems (Hollywood divorce).. tbh idk what my favorite album is.. stankonia is my fav album from them
Andre 1997 Yeah don't get me wrong there's some tracks I like on Stankonia but I just felt it had a very inconsistent tracklist and a lot of the songs just felt too experimental and many felt like filler. If the album had a shorter more concise tracklist then maybe I'd rank it higher, but for me I prefer Outkast's other albums more. Perhaps it will grow on me though and I've just been to quick to judge.
Kaizer-Man it will man trust me i felt that way tooo, but then i listened to it frequent times and it just clicked.. songs like toilet tisha, slum beautiful and stanklove are the most unique songs ive ever heard in my life.. the album felt like an experience.. gasoline dream had a huge rock influence which i didnt fuck with at first but hearing it again and again i understood why it belonged there and how it resonated so well with the album so well... every sound is new and refreshing every song feels different... they even had a cypress hill type feel on xplosion
MyNameIsGhost All Kanye before Yeezus, Madvillainy, ATLiens, Aquemini, Take Care, House Of Balloons, Illmatic, and Liquid Swords are some of my favorite hip hop/R&B records.
This is the most important album in the history of hip hop (Aquimini is the most important album in the history of music). Thank you for this review of this classic album created by the greatest musical artist in the history of music. 99% of music has influences from the iconic group and that's most prevalent in looking how influential the South is in hip hop and popular culture in general. Most people don't know that they were producers as well since they went under the name Earthtone III (as you mentioned). Knowing they curated every aspect of these legendary songs puts them head and shoulders over any artist they could be compared to them. In 97 it was either East or West Coast and those sounds and styles over saturated the market this was a brilliant side step of the norm from that time as we've recently seen with Kendrick's To Pimp A Butterfly and Childish Gambino's Awaken, My Love. What they did with obvious jazz and funk themes respectively, Atliens did with airy space sounds and early forms of melodic flows (which is the norm today). I could literally write a dissertation on this album. In fact this album inspired a short story I wrote in 07 for the 10th anniversary of the album. I guess in the last sentence alone you can tell how life changing this album was for a 11 year old kid from San Diego and transforming him into an Atlien. #IAmOutKast #OutKastGeneration

Outkast is Hip-hop.
How it is when it ain't all peaches and cream.
Thanks again.

those Prince albums in the back best mean you'll be dropping a Prince review this week.
Damn son Where'd you find this
7:39 when I thought it was safe to sip my tea, and quickly found it all over my keyboard
Outkast definitely influenced many hip hop artists since albums like this
Great review and review choice!

MynameisBob BUT NOT AS GOOD AS THE DEVIL AND GOD
Can any of y'all enlighten my ignorent ass and tell me to which artists the albums yall are mentioning belong to?
Dormammu Brand New
Ryan Smith i just heard daisy recently and i'd put it in between tdag and deja entendu -- it's better than deju but not as good as tdag
MynameisBob i would cry tears of happiness if he reviewed any of brand new's albums
One of the best verses on this album is the Mosquito at the end of wheels of steel. Killed it.
im a HUGGGE outkast fan... i love all their albums except idlewild, which still has its gems (Hollywood divorce).. tbh idk what my favorite album is.. stankonia is my fav album from them
Stankonia is probably my least favourite :P (not including Idlewild as an Outkast album though)
Kaizer-Man it needs to grow on u, it is veryyyy different...
Andre 1997 Idlewild is great
This might be my favorite review of yours

Can't wait to ear their next project
Milanus outkast wil never make an duo album again
shotgunrage18 check big bois twitter. It ain't confirmed but... hope
read the interviews about how Andre acts when Big Boi ask him to work together, he pretty much acts to good for him and blows him off, its so sad.
Its crazy that 20 years later and Andre's verses are still highlights of the year.
I still sorta feel like you should have reviewed Aquemini instead of this
TheLastSliceOfPie atliens is way better
Elison Martinez Da Art Of Storytellin' Pt. 1 is like their best song duuuuuuuuuuuude
all their albums are classics so it's whatever
Frank Wave TRUE
TheLastSliceOfPie Why their best albums were their first two
This is the most important album in the history of hip hop (Aquimini is the most important album in the history of music).
BRING BACK CAL CHUCHESTA
When you said on Twitter an Outkast review was coming, I was expecting Stankonia, but this is great because I like ATLiens more.
