There's a bunch of eagle chatter up in the trees too!
There are lots of bald eagles living in md again, after the effects of DDT wore off the birds have come back.
I’m from Cecil County Md. and I help build part of the rail trail that goes from Fisherman’s Park following the river into Susquehanna State Park. This was back in the late 95/early96. I worked for the DNR as seasonal employee.
We used to meet at the dam in the morning, fish until the boss showed up. And fish in our lunch after running up to the local tackle shop to buy beers, then we would fish about 3-4hrs after work. Was an awesome experience.

I fish there on a regular basis and have to cover my truck after I launch my boat. Black vultures will chew the rubber trim and windshield wipers of your vehicale.
Vultures are a protected wildlife species that have been grossly misunderstood and have been nearly driven to extinction. They are the cleaners of our environment. They clean up most roadkill and most dead wildlife. They are pretty amazing!!! Great video!!!
I went there many times in the 80’s and 90’s but I don’t remember the vulture invasion. I saw Eagles and plenty of other birds.
This is my backyard!! I live a few minutes from here. Yes, the eagles are all over that area!!

How extraordinary, it's like a micro colony of vultures. What is the attraction to make them gather here in such huge numbers? A very differnt video indeed, but well worth a watch.

November is the best time to see bald eagles, tons of them.

Nest on power line looks more like a osprey nest. But eagles are finished with nesting by now. The young will have fledged.
black vultures. they look "stocky" compared to the turkey vulture which is more impressive in size. In my area (carbon county PA) the black vultures are migrants. i love crows. when i enter the woods they start "talking" about me. When they sound really excited, there might be a hawk they are tormenting. Very nice video, I will have to check out this area. the susquehanna is so beautiful.

I live in Centre County PA. We used to only have turkey vultures but black vultures have moved in over the last few years. And they strip the roof off the County Office Building. I haven't heard of any car damage.
Wow, I had no idea they did that. When I lived in NC we had tons of the turkey vultures around. They like to sit on the neighbor's roof in the late afternoon. Waiting for the best thermals to ride, I guess.
I had a black vulture on my front lawn this Spring, so I just watched him and thought aww he's weed whacking around my pine tree for me. "Wrong" next it was grabbing baby bunnies out their nest and flying away with them in his mouth. It was a terrible sight. He came back one more time and I screamed at him to beat it, never saw him again.

There are tons of Eagles there.
When they open the dam the fish are very active and the Eagles dive down to catch their dinner. There are many photographers there at times too a prime spit for many species birds. Nice walking path as well.
North on Rt. 1 over the bridge is Port Deposit you can catch lunch or fish there as well. Very old little town.
Hi Cliff, I did read that the dam inlet valves let through a number of fish and that is why there is a concentration of birds because it's a great feeding for them. Vultures give me the creeps lol. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💖
Love this place. 100's of eagles in the fall.
Visited this place a few times back in the 80's, went to music camp near here in the early 80's when I was a kid. There is an interesting old town on the Cecil county side named Port Deposit, used to be very unique looking. Beautiful place, hard to believe Three Mile Island isn't that far from here

Beautiful area and nice to see you explore some Maryland areas. The trail to the south is nice and further down is an old restored mill complex with houses sometimes open for tours.

If I see vultures at the abandoned house explores, I know it's going to be a good explore. Hasn't proven me wrong yet. They're beautiful birds. I hear the trilling of an eagle in the background. Beautiful day out.
Those turkey vultures love weather strips lol. They chew them right of your car.
That Dam holds some big fish
I once had a Turkey vulture fly right into my hood on my trailblazer and it cracked halfway up the hood.

We used to go fishing there all the time when I was a kid in the 70s
Around 1970 the shad were about wiped out when the dam shut down a lot of water flow and the Shad were caught in pools of water and died from lack of oxygen. You want to see Eagles , during the winter they congregate there at the Dam, The highest number of eagles on the east Coast. They eat off the fish that are killed going through the turbines. 1972 after Hurricane Agnes dump all the rain on Pa, They had all 52 gates open . the water reached 118 ft behind the dam, They were going to blast a hole in the levee between the Railroad and the river. on the east side of the dam. so the water would not go over the dam. The water never got that high.
Vultures are'nt the prettiest bird but, like bats and mayflies, they are very benefitional to the enviroment.
Kind of the understatement of the century. I, however, find American Black Vultures to be adorable!
What a great spot. Great shots of terrific birds. Since these vultures are good at tearing things apart; I think they can do that with parts on cars. Also, their droppings are pretty nasty and would probably damage the paint on a car.
I have a bit of advice, Cliff. When you scan with the camera; go a little slower. The scenery is hard to admire when you scan too fast. You do a great job overall and pick very interesting and lovely spots for all of us that watch your channel to enjoy.
Shad are "anadromous" - they spend their lives in the ocean and come into the river to spawn (similar to salmon). The PA Fish Commission was originally created to restore the shad population in the Susquehanna River.
Puts me in mind of the Alfred Hitchcock movie, The Birds lol

My brother and I used to fish at Conowingo Dam in Cecil County years ago. I haven’t seen vultures since that time until a year or two ago. I had a dead animal carcass on my property. I think it was a raccoon or something. Then I saw one of the beautiful colored vultures. Bright blue, red, yellow and green. Where it came from I don’t know because I hadn’t seen any in the area for forty years.

You can tell the difference between young Turkey Vultures and young Black Vultures by the length of their tail. The Black Vulture has a much shorter tail. The crow calling is a Fish Crow.
The reason for the warning sign about the vultures is because they will peck at the windshield wipers and rubber molding on the parked cars. Some people have had over a thousand dollars of damage when they damaged the molding around sunroofs.
I’ve lived in Md. for 59 years and I had to Google Conowingo. I moved to a private lake with a wildlife sanctuary about 6 yrs. ago and was shocked to find that Md. has some pretty serious predatory birds. I have Turkey Vultures here and they will destroy the paint on your car, their talons scratch the paint right down to the medal.
That's new to me seeing all of those vultures up there. I used to ride up to dam all of the time. Did you take the tour (off camera)?

Wow, those vultures act like geese hanging around a pond. probably they get spoiled being fed by humans
The younger the vulture, the further up their head the feathers are still growing. With each molting, their "featherline" recedes, their beaks begin to look more bone like, and the skin on their heads lightens a little bit.
These were almost all definitely American black vultures. ABVs tend to be more social, and less afraid of humans. Turkey vultures on the other hand, often are seen in groups of less than 4 or more, often can be seen in a group of black vultures because their sense of smell is actually more keen. As much as I hate to admit it, American black vultures are opportunistic jerks in that they use their power of numbers to force Turkey vultures away from a carcass after the Turkey vultures have been the ones to show them where the food is.
The sign is also because as juveniles if they are not the ones searching for food or if they are full already they are extremely curious, playful, and destructive. Cars make a great thing for them to explore and pull apart.
That sign is incredibly common in parks in the Everglades and Florida. Lol

They were everywhere
I was there today. I parked closer to the dam, and I didn't see any vultures near the cars. They were mainly at the entrance.
I think you call a large gathering of vultures, a "congress of vultures"...pretty accurate...
Actually, Congress is a group of chimpanzees.
Vultures are a Committee, venue, or volt while gathered. In flight, the form a kettle.
And when a group of Vultures is feeding on a carcass (and I SO wish I was the one who dreamt this up!)
They are referred to as a wake.
The dam used to have a fish lift so they could go upstream to spawn. Is it no longer operating??
There are still two fish lifts in operation, but shut them off after the spawn.

Ya know what's odd?.....I've never seen a vulture on a nest. For over 40 years I've hiked, camped, fished, hunted, farmed....been outdoors as much as I can....But I've never seen a vulture nest.
Vultures are more of ground nester.
They often nest on rock overhangs or in small caves.
why so many vultures? didn't think they congregated like that except to migrate
Since vultures gather where there is death, maybe the dam and the high-powered electrical wires are killing a lot creatures and attracting so many vultures.

Eagles aint no picnic either in 88 a farmer put out 5 dead sows and theyre mustv been twenty of them 50ft from the road i was walking on. They didnt want me there and flew right near me squaking get outta here human. I damn well did

Just another little tid bit about birds, they poop every six minutes. Where I lived in the mid west we had issues with Canadian geese, bird poop was always everywhere, disgusting. Sorry this is what I always think about whenever I see birds congregating like this.
Watched them at Codorus State Park pull the windshield wipers off a Cadillac Escalade.
