Architecture: Insights into a male-dominated industry | DW Documentary

  • Architecture has long been considered a male domain. But that is changing, as female architects like Zaha Hadid and Eileen Gray receive international recognition for their groundbreaking designs.
What unique hurdles and challenges do female architects have to overcome on their way to the top? How do they get highly coveted commissions in a fiercely competitive industry? And to what extent do their designs and buildings reflect an alternative vision?
The female architects portrayed in this film shed light on topics from leadership and authority to the "cult of genius”, creativity, pressure, competition, gender roles and social responsibility. They talk about their own relationships to power and reflect on an industry in flux.
Regine Leibinger is building Berlin's tallest building, which should be finished by 2024. Helga Blocksdorf is the force behind a structure in Weimar clad in birch bark. Anapuma Kundoo has devoted herself entirely to the revival of traditional Indian craftsmanship, as seen in her "Wall-House”, which she built to scale for the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale.
Architecture is the only art form designed to be lived in. Though underrepresented, women architects shape this world. These are some of their stories.

Because their Constitution doesn't require it. There were women fighting in wars, even the trenches. Also wars (and some heavy lifting jobs) require physical strength to do. And testosterone as a chemical boosts this. So most people with high T levels are mostly men. If there are women doing these jobs there can only be few. Architecture (and a lot of tech jobs too) doesn't require strength to do. A few centuries ago women weren't allowed to be doctors, writers, etc. This video is about these jobs not requiring physical strength but mental faculties and dedication.

In architecture school, the only female architects I learned about were Zaha Hadid (of course) and Denise Scott Brown, the latter, was by pure coincidence because I read about Robert Venturi. I was surprised at the amount of other girls/women studying architecture, I would even dare to say that there were a similar number of male and female students.
After I graduated, I tried so hard to get internships, something that wasn't available to me when I was studying because it is not part of the school curriculum where I live, like in some countries I know. This was basically impossible, for the first 5 years after graduating, and getting a job as an architect was not an option because companies were only hiring people with 5+ years of experience, but how are you going to get experience if no one will hire you? And none of the companies at that time were willing to accept interns (Trust me, I even went so far as to offer my services for free). What some of my peers did, was work as drafters in the first few years, but that was rough, it was often not a choice since they had to pay their own studies, the advantage was that by the time they graduated ( in 8-10 years ) they had the experience to do basic work at a firm.
I wouldn't say that I was at a disadvantage because I'm a woman. The problem lies in that the market is saturated, now 9 years after graduating, there are very few openings at these architecture firms, and still very few to no companies willing to give people the training they need to grow.

The year is 2022 so you cannot look at it as if it's the 60s, that is pretty self explanatory.
Even an infant can point fingers and you will end your life pointing that finger without having achieved anything because you never wanted it in the first place. How is that for responsibility.
The sad reality to it all is that a large herd of women in this world have daddy issues, and try to punish a whole gender for what one single man in their past did or did not do for them. That is just tragic, and all it is to it is to get in touch with a psychologist and start therapy instead of projecting every personal problem out into the public which will only make everything worse for themself as well as everybody else.
PS: Men have feelings too, and most men just keep them suppressed because we are told constantly over and over that feelings are wrong, and still feminists wants more. Most men just suck it up and don't say anything. You all know that, and yet you choose to ignore it, and sitll want more of the cake.
I've never been a father in my life, so how the hell can I be responsible for you?

I didn’t really see massive proof of discrimination. Seemed like one or two anecdotes of a female architect not winning a competition or being featured in a book. I agree about it being inappropriate to say “nice lipstick” and the like in a work setting - that’s true of every work setting. But other points about architecture being “too standardized”, while ok, interesting, doesn’t support the thesis. If there’s a gender problem in architecture, this didn’t really hammer it home.

For the female teachers it was perfectly ok, but when evee (4 and one of the last kids in the class i worked with and for about 6 months) (she was the youngest, the other kids moved to different classes) gave me a hug at the end of the day, another students mom thought this was "inappropriate" despite the fact that my female assistant teacher (i was the lead teacher) had just gave her son a hug. She reported me to the director and I got bitched out and placed on "probation" (from the school not legal) because of my actions. I asked what about the female teachers who constantly have physical contact all day with every child. the response was "the parent's don't have an issue with it" well this parent also happened to dislike me because i asked her to help me correct her sons behavior (he liked to hit, and after he punched another little girl in the eye and she had to be sent to the doctor I was getting fedup with it) *she didn't like her child being anything but "a sparkle of sunshine who does no wrong"...I had never had a single accusation of inappropriate behavior from any other parent and often got asked if i'd babysit privately for quite a few of the students. Yet because of this accusation a newsletter was published by the school which specifically banned the males from any physical contact with the children (there are cameras everywhere, nothing could happen anyway) well a few parents from the class below mine read this and "asked questions" as to why this is now an issue, they explained that a parent had been concerned about a child hugging a male teacher" well unfortunately they took it in a very "over the top" manner, and when they found out it was my class (these parents children were weeks from being moved into my class) they threatened to remove their children from the center and "protest" against them. So I was fired from my position (missouri isn't a right to work state and our contracts could be terminated without reason) My kids cried, were upset, and begged me not go. I sound like such a terrible teacher right? well 2 weeks later the center was closed because one of the female teachers had been found actually hitting several of the kids.. she received no charges and only lost her job.. I faced an investigation, lost my job, and because "my reason for dismissal" was listed as inappropriate contact with children" i haven't been able to find another job in childcare/teaching. even though there was no inappropriate contact in any way shape or form. People are struggling across Europe and the world and this is what you go with?
While some things can come across as sexist, it is anything but. People paying the bills like familiarity, it gives them reassurance and when large amounts of money are involved, they like security.
We have had 2 female Prime Ministers in recent years here in the UK, Teresa May cried when she lost her job as PM but not for the victim of Grenfell Tower.
The current female Prime Minister, Lizz Truss managed in less than 20 days to wipe off 500 billion pounds from the stock market, make mortgages go from around 4% to 10.5%, increase inflation forcing the Bank of England to come in and buy 65 billion pounds of debt all for 45 billion pounds of tax cuts for multi-millionaire and billionaires with no solution on how to pay for it.
    An excellent ambassador for women.
This is why people should never be chosen based on gender.
Get over yourself, you're not entitled to anything.
Men built most of what exists, often under extreme conditions, where would we be as a society? as a world? without them, chasing our food in fields with spears. Men are not at fault for building the world, so bore off with the "poor me" the world is a terrible place for women rubbish.

I like to think only of the future Tower cities connected to maglev Trains worldwide, because that’s what we should have been building since 1900-ish. Each tower city would need to have all things, from indoor gardens and fields, possibly underground, but each house would have its own greenhouse. The fields could be vertical, without soil. Look them up on RUclips. But I think every tower could and should be massive, so that no one would have to go outside much, if they don’t want to. There would be a footprint that might be the size of 6 to 10 large stadiums, and might even have 2-4 stadiums, for events like games, big dances for people of different ages. There should be homes of different sizes, because some people might need to live alone, but some families will like having sort of mansions where their whole family can live together, until it’s too crowded! So they might need removable walls to change as needs arise.
There should be vehicle rentals, especially since there will be a need for them for a while, but I hope in the future there won’t be a need for any vehicles. There should be tall ceilings and doors to avoid feeling cramped, maybe 12-14 feet doors. Every home should have a large balcony, the side of a yard today, but with folding movable glass doors to increase or decrease the size easily. Very strong nets to prevent falls of people and objects such as childrens’ balls, and even bigger things because children can often purposely try to throw something (like a tricycle!) over the (clear) balcony wall. And they can’t be supervised at every second, so everyone needs to be safe, both from high up and down below. The living room could become larger with a small yard with artificial turf, or a smaller living room with a larger yard. There are many ideas, I’m sure.
If all towers look the same they’d be faster to build worldwide.
Of course, building T&T can’t be done with the capitalist wage system. There must be equal wealth worldwide, to end poverty, and give everyone a wonderful chance at life, because happy people just makes everyone happy! Oppression is what causes all the unhappiness, and crimes, and insanity, like mass murders.
There might have to be group homes for children whose parents die, or don’t want their children for some reason. Maybe a teenager becomes unruly and they just want him or her to go live somewhere else until they either grow up and become a better person that stops rebelling, or many problems.
All people should own all things worldwide. So all people can work part time. And in T&T there won’t be as much work. The way we do business and life now, by scattering out on the ground, with small houses and far away workplaces which is awful, and forces everyone to need their own vehicles, which also kills many parents of children making their lives miserable! Many orphans (most?) end up homeless when they turn 18 and have no money! No one’s going to give them $30,000 to help them make a life of their own.
Speaking about money, we can today eliminate money because most of it is just numbers in computers. And the wage system called capitalism is why millions, billions worldwide, are homeless and starving to death! Either eliminate money outright, or give everyone a Universal Basic Income, or redistribute money equally worldwide, or something else. Because capitalism is obviously slavery, and wrong, and the cause of all homelessness and crimes and wars! In USA it’s easy to see, because when someone is earning $7 an hour and gas costs $7 a gallon, and someday even more, it’s obvious that the problem is the wage system, it’s not the answer, and the wage is just insane, and unequal wealth is insane. Equality means equal wealth worldwide. I keep harping on that every day on RUclips, and someday it will happen, because capitalism is eliminating all jobs with automation. So we should start a Revolution maybe, so all nations can start building T&T.
It will also help save the earth to build only T&T, because the land can be given back to wildlife, like in Mumbai the people are being forced into the wilderness where leopards etc are attacking people and dogs and eating their children and pets. No one is safe on the ground anyway! Rising ocean levels are destroying millions of people worldwide. But we also need to quickly build thousands of desalination plants worldwide ASAP. We need to destroy capitalism to have happy people worldwide by ending oppression, stop the work, and have EQUALITY WORLDWIDE! And stop all wars ASAP! Wars are caused by the few rich people, but they force the poor to do the killing in military JOBS worldwide. We must all change.
What about the people who don’t want T&T?
They’ll be free…to kill their whole family in their vehicles!

I have to repeat myself over n over to get them to listen to me. In the end i just don’t give a damn, i just work to get my paycheck. The less i have to do the better. I like working by myself, I don’t really like being told what to do. Too many chefs ruin the dish. Sometimes ppl just talk but not really doing anything, or don’t have the skill to think thru the concept all the way to execution. I think i just picked the profession because i like to draw. And i like being in control of the project. I know so much that i foresee the issue because i practically build the building in my head and in the computer software. I still got laid off due to covid, even after all i did. That’s when i decide i just do whatever i want n not wanting to care anymore. When I was in school, we were taught history of architecture started with Greece then rest of European continent. Rest of the world is just beneath white ppl. Firms promote white male mostly for decades. I was told that I’m not suited for management due to the way that I talked. Oh sorry. if I don’t talk like elitist white male. architecture profession is known to be filled with prim madonnas. And No Harvard is NOT the best schools. Lofty professors and Lofty theories don’t solve our overpopulated cities and traffic congestions. All in all…Blue collar vs white collar. Elitist vs Workers. I left AIA like many nonwhite architects. Yeah. Good documentary. Thank you DW for shedding a light on the masses. Architecture profession has changed but NOT ENOUGH!! We need to continue advocate what true equality. inclusivity. diversity really look like for all. And no men don’t speak for us. AIA is an antiquated organization.
