“Behind Closed Doors - The Life of an Architect” is a full architecture documentary / film that gives you an insight into what it is like to be an architect.
What an architect does is typically hidden behind closed doors. But, as architecture students, how do we know what we are getting ourselves into? Why is it such a mystery as to what an architect does? The profession of architecture might not be as glorious as it seems.
In this full architecture documentary, you will witness what a day in the life of an architect looks, feels, and tastes like (spoiler: coffee). Truthfully, the life of an architect is not all sunshine and rainbows. Despite the stress, late nights and years of rigorous study and practice . . . in the end, is it worth becoming an architect? Is the architecture life rightfully exalted?
The documentary “Behind Closed Doors - The Life of an Architect” will bring you along a day in the life of architects, interior architects, interior designers, draftsmen, BIM managers, landscape architects, graduates of architecture, intern architects and architecture students.
From morning to evening, you will experience what it is like in the life of an architect. This will help you decide whether it is something you might be interested in doing or continuing. Maybe you are not cut out for the life of an architect?
The late architect, Zaha Hadid once said “if you want an easy life, don’t become an architect”.
In the architecture documentary, you will discover what Hadid was talking about. What are these big challenges you will need to learn to overcome? More importantly, HOW can you overcome them?
The interviewees in this documentary provide an insight into their lives within the architecture profession. They share their biggest struggles, favourite moments, advice to their younger selves and answer the question “is it all worth it?”.
If you have ever thought about studying architecture or becoming an architect, this documentary is a must watch. So much of what an architect does is hidden behind closed doors. So, let us open them. Let us dive into the life of an architect behind closed doors.

Holy smokes! 6 months ago, our class was halfway through the 6th semester of architecture school. Everyone was busily trying to get their studio project done, but I had something else playing on my mind at the same time.
I had been receiving a lot of messages asking, "what it's like to be an architect / student of architecture?" “I’ve heard of the difficulties involved with the profession and education, is it worth it?”.
It made me question it myself. Why are these the most common questions asked by aspiring architects? Could it be that the work of an architect is hidden behind closed doors? It is almost impossible to get an insight into what it is like. As students, we are heading blindly into a vast profession we know so little about.
This needed to change. I set out to make ONE VIDEO that put all questions to rest. One video that would give an insight into what it is really like. One video to help you decide if architecture is really something you want to dedicate your life to.
I collected as much filming and audio equipment as I could find (I might have gone through my brother's equipment too... shhh), and set out to Baukultur - an architecture practice in Adelaide. I was taken on site visits, client meetings, builder discussions and hung around the office to capture what it is like being an architect. Man, did I realise how much I didn’t know I didn’t know.
The next week, I went to Northern Edge Studio where I met the founder, Paul. I think Paul said it best when he said, “once you finish Uni, you realise there’s still a lot to learn”.
Now, here we are. 6 months later.
The documentary is finished. Is the life of an architect worth all the stress, late nights, and struggle?
It is time to reveal the life of an architect behind closed doors.

I'd always desired to become an architect but sometimes I wish that I can just stop worrying about the future and just be a humble patient person and hope for the better.
Well hell, I'm gonna be doin allot of that when I sign up for the courses and get the requirements.
@@surajseepersad7558 It is good if you will start as soon as possible: preparation courses, master-classes - anything. It's not that stressful if you'll find something you enjoy the most. Just remember that you *can* do it, even if it seems to be hard in the beginning

@@surajseepersad7558 always start early... This my second years architecture college.. i really regret that i didnt start early.. sketchup vray Photoshop and illustrator.. its really struggle at first.. but its worth.
I feel that an architect must have the vision of an artist, a great photographer, painter, sculptor, and even a musician. One that spots beauty, or interesting detail in ways that the average person does not. I’ve always admired architects and what they do. Myself having 5 years of basic drafting classes 8th through 12th grade (none at university level) I never really did much with other than I do back bar design for restaurants & Bars and general commercial kitchen designs as an equipment distributor. I live in a 1948 cottage of a home on a river in N. IL that definitely is a nod to Frank Lloyd Wright. Every improvement over 17 years now we go for features that bring out or fit in with the mid-century design elements. The word “Zen” is maybe overused but the best way to describe mid century design in my opinion.

As a Master's of architecture student I must say your content really is top tier and engaging. I didn't think I would have the time to watch this one since you've spoiled us with so many short and sweet videos packed with info, but it came on after some other architecture videos trying to find inspiration while working on a project. I really appreciate you taking the time to share the perspectives of so many professionals at different levels. This is what we long to see but rarely have access to until after our studies. It's definitely the kind of inspiration we need when we're feeling hopeless at 2am with a head full of ideas and a blank page. I have been starting my days (and also some of those long nights) with coffee (i'm more of a tea person), I found it hilarious when you edited that they all start their days with coffee lolll. I also laughed when the one lady shared that she still pulls all nighters every now and then. I really hoped there was a point to look forward to in which that stops lol. The search for the skill of better time management lives on I guess lol. Thank you for the work you're doing. lol i can’t relate. i have been working overtime and weekends for 6 years now in an american architecture firm. i’m about to switch my career path, i think i’m done.
The most profound architects are the ones who don't say things like "architecture might bring you happiness". You shouldn't be in any career that makes you feel that way. That's a horrid way to live life.

Currently i feel miserable and regret joining this architecture school everyday, just because of the staff that is teaching us, that’s not just me, but all of us the 27 students agree on this

A bad teacher can definitely ruin your education. There's not much you can do about that, but try learning on your own and not let them discourage you from doing what you love.

I am an energy engineer by profession with a masters degree from Oxford. But I find architecture to be a very interesting field with so much applications and opportunities. I have been doing some self learning and reading books to use tools like Revit and AutoCad to help with my profession.

This is sad. A documentary on architects and none of them actually started with any passion for architecture. It was all a practical negotiation of not-engineering balanced with couldn't-find-anything-more-interesting.
Great documentary for those studying and needing a reality check. This is so important for those that eventually head into the industry. This is not just a career or job it’s a PASSION. As someone who has worked in the industry for 15+ years as a junior technician all the way to director of a multi-discipline company and then return to university recently to complete my bachelors degree I have found this inspiring and reinvigorated me. I’m am pressing on to complete my degree this year and finally get back into the workforce. Great job, I look forward to seeing more content.

Almost 3rd year as an architecture student, didn't failed any of my majors which makes me happy but doing loads of plates makes me so stressful and exhausting. Which I've think of myself in the future if I've finished architecture maybe i would be a lonely man and couldn't enjoy my life :/ sorry for bad english
Would it be fair to say that architecture as a profession entails business, salesmanship, and branding/marketing? Trying to build a business and vying for clients?
That would be very fair to say. I think those traits are relevant for a lot of professions too. They would be more common for someone doing their own work, whereas an architect or graduate working for someone wouldn't have as much of a focus on those things, though they would still be relevant.
The fact that we create footprint that last years makes architecture wonderful and it makes architecture different compare to other fields. That the reason why I like architecture.

I'm a licensed NCIDQ certified interior designer, for years, in the US. The only professionals I enjoy working with, besides really good and honest contractors, are architects. I do not enjoy working with too many other interior designers, they don't think like I do. Should have been an architect and designer combo.

You know my fellow architecture mates, I've just got my license degree in Architecture. That was lots of harsh moments, and heading now to Master degree.
I feel that those 3 first years were the most exucriating, and now that the master is coming, I feel relieved, not that it will ask even more work than before, but that I will start to touch a new layer of this discipline: research.
For those having hard times studying architecture: if you feel that passion tingling you, don't ever give up, you can do it !

I’m on the last year of my master’s and I still feel like I don’t know much and not talented in architecture specially in designing. So I’m super afraid of applying for jobs and embaressing myself in the office.
That's a fairly common feeling for architecture students, don't let this discourage you! I can't remember who said it in the interview (I'm sure it was more than one person), but they said you can't possibly be prepared for what it's like inside a practice until you join one. Just like joining architecture school, you knew nothing about how to design, draw or use architectural software, but you picked that up once you started. Good luck

Off topic: Are you guys german with no german accents at all or are you guys americans/english living in Germany? Haha I was wondering cuz if it's the second case then it would be damn weird cuz I've never seen that much americans at one place...and the first case is just impossible haha....i was asking because I saw this german phrases (it is german, isn't it?)
Haha Baukultur is a German word, yes! But we are from Australia. We are very lucky to have no/little cases where we live.
It's a profession based on mythology. Low pay . Maximum mental stress. Unless you are a star architect, mondain daily work based on standardized techniques. You are employed and unemployed based on the slightest economic shift ... soon to be obsolete based on the exponential evolution of AI

As seen in this video, there's definitely pros and cons. For me, I love it. But, as Chris mentions, it's not going to be the same for everyone. There's really only one way to find out!

I might be biased, but UniSA has been great. I'm sure any University in Australia would provide a similar experience. It's more about how much you put in which determines how much you get out of it. Good luck!

I've been a nurse for 33 years. Nursing education is similar to the education of an architect in that it is continuous. Standards of care change and you are constantly updating. You have to take what you learn in university and pull it out and synthesize that knowledge with the real world application everyday. I'm watching this because I made a choice, nursing versus a degree in architecture. A kind of " what if had made a different decision, what would my life look like npw?"
That's pretty awesome. How do you feel about it now? Are you glad you became a nurse?
@@kylesinko If I could go back in time I would choose becoming an architect. There is no perfect job but nursing didn’t give me that sense of fulfillment like I thought it would. My opinion of modern medicine changed over the decades and the care I gave in ICU seemed more like torture to the patient. I switched to OB and once again, what we do sometimes causes more problems than it solves. I have mixed feelings about it, I’m a big believer in preventative medicine. Stay out of doctor’s offices.

Sitting hear watching this as a fully qualified architect at the age of 48...... It was my dream to become an architect.. BUT all things considered and the amount of work and study involved, and the total destruction of what an architect is within the industry. (Gone are the days when the architect was the main figure within a project). I always contemplate that I should have chosen a better path, (medical or finance). Architecture is a calling...

This video is great and there is great insight in it. Although asking if architecture is worth doing and what it is like to work as an architect at people whose only job was as an architect is not realistic. And the sad reality is that it is very difficult to find people who were once in a different profession because architecture is a very long course to get into or change afterward.

Bodybuilding… I do love buildings and I have made sure about studying and becoming an architect by my question is do you think an architect will be able to workout everyday and kinda have a sport career beside his work? I mean basically for bodybuilding you just need an two hours a day for a workout and consistency with food…
Hi Parsa. Thanks for the comment. It'd be like having any hobby on the side. Most of the architects I interviewed spent time outside of work doing things they love. It's all about setting aside some time for what you prioritise in life. It is definitely achievable.

Just started masters, feel crazy overwhelmed but learning so much! Really enjoyed the 'after school' perspective of this. My professor who recommended i go for masters worked with Zaha Hadid in London, and he prepared me with that exact quote mentioned in your summary. Every industry has it's pro's and con's, I just wish more people had a better understand of the extent of how much work goes into architecture (both as a student and in practice). Great Chanel!

Pretty hilarious how one of them went to Europe and was incredibly inspired by the richness of its old architectural cultural heritage, and then years later - like virtually every other architect of our day, is now laboring away at making the kinds of soul-less, horrific, spirit-eroding dystopian steel/glass box modernist architecture that is devouring modern cities.
