Just came across this video but not before I had a problem with my Truma pump failing. By accident I couldn’t get a replacement and instead got a Whale pump. What a difference! Easier to fit and a really flexible pipe making it much easier when you swap from one aqua roll to another.
Excellent. FYI - I’m still using this very same pump now, even when I thought I broke it, it was just a corroded terminal on the caravan. - so they do last!
Fantastic advice Dan. I didn’t even realise this design of pump existed. I’ve experienced exactly the same issues as you over the last 12 months with the Truma pump, so I bought the Whale after seeing this and what a difference it makes! I can stand my barrel upright now and no longer have to fill it up three times a day, despite it already being half full of water! Thanks again for the great tip.
Another great Video! Thank goodness ive had Bailey caravans with the Whale pumps for the last 5 years. Prior to that i had a new Lunar Quasar with the Truma pistol grip pump, absolutely horrid! I always remember the pistol grip part kept coming apart. So now you have a UK company showing the Germans the correct way to make their own pumps!
Thanks Dan this is really useful. We too have a Lunar Clubman and we are away in Cornwall on our holiday. Arrived yesterday and the b****y Truma pump played up right from the off. Then we had a water leak under one of the beds so not using our system at present. I have had all of the issues you have mentioned and have also been fed up with it.Was going to buy another pump now it will be a Whale. Thanks for the info 😁
The submersible pump that came with our 2006 caravan, Truma Trauma, was a pathetic dribble. Les, bent my ear about it on several occasions. So I did some homework and bought a Whale. What a difference, I have carried the original for a few months in case there was a problem but the next trip will be a pump lighter.
Hi Dan I found the truma difficult to locate and the grip constantly falling apart. Took your advice and got a whale WOW what a difference, better flow and soooo much quieter many thanks keep up the good work
Great advice, thanks for sharing, we will get a whale pump as had all the problems you had and are fed up with reattaching the jubilee clip after all our water spewed out!
Dan, this is exactly the video I needed right now! Going off now to buy the Whale as I absolutely hate the Truma one. Causing me no end of issues. Thanks so much
Brilliant! First time out with our recently purchased Sterling last weekend and we had a nightmare with the Truma pump. It had clearly been rolled fairly tightly by the previous owner, had a couple of nasty kinks so the flow was very slow, and was so inflexible that it kept rolling itself up out of the water in the aquaroll. It had worked ok on a warm September day when tested in our garden, but a cold November day on site was a different matter. A quick search on the 'net brought up your video and I'm delighted to find that whale have produced a better alternative. Mine's on order, I'm confident the air will be less blue next time out.
Couldn't agree more with the issues with the Truma pump, it's a real pain when you're on an uneven pitch. I don't know about you, but I feel the water pressure is very low with it too. It's annoying to have to buy a different pump to solve this issue though, more expense.... Great video as usual!
OMG thank you for this video, I've been at my whits end with my trauma pump. Dan you are a god, I'm on my second pump in 3 months as I thought the leaking was an issue with the individual unit, not the actual design. I had no idea you could change the brand of pump, naively I thought they were specific to the make of caravan. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Wow! When I first saw this video, I wondered how anyone could talk about these pumps for 6 minutes. But what a brilliant, detailed, and clear review! I'm very impressed, and my motorhome doesn't even use one of these external pumps!! :-D But I'll certainly be checking out your other videos now. Thanks.
Thanks for this very useful video! I had a whale-pump from the start but accidentally had it run dry (which happens quite easily). I replaced it with a comet pump which basically looks the same and was a little cheaper plus it has a 30min dry run capability. But I keep forgetting to turn the pump off in the van before I drive away in the car to get the aqua roll filled. There is much danger in damaging the pump again, so overall I'm not too happy about this design.
You must have read my mind. Exactly the same problem with my Quasar/Truma setup. I've been trying to solve this for a while. Will look into the Whale equivalent. Cheers.
Good vid Dan ,been there done that ,got fed up of reconnecting hose ,you would think the makers would see this problem ,anyway was looking around spares shop and saw a flexible double hose right length ,fitted same ,works perfect nice and flexible, will look at whale as my pump is getting a bit noisey
I was convinced that the pump was inside the caravan and it was just a filter that sat in the aquaroll....your videos are amazing, saying that...i now have umpteen jobs to do at the weekend lol...water-pipe cleaning...gas-level checks...battery checks, although it does have a solar panel on the roof....damp-checks, have purchased a meter and will put it to good use :-) I have apps to download too, and also workout how our virgin media can transmit the F1 races to the smart tv....it's supposed to be a "weekend break" lol...
Another great video Dan and fantastic support for a great Northern Ireland company like Whale. Their customer service should you need to use it, is second to none. We have the Whale heating system on our Bailey and its great. We have had one issue with it whilst on holiday, they even sent their Managing Director to our caravan site to fix it for us, but luckily their phone engineer fixed it before he got there and the Manager Director was turned back.
Same problem here, didn't knew about this whale solution. I changed the Truma hose by a sillicon protection hose and a sillicon innertube. I have the impression that this will work fine. No force to the connector, no bends.
Certainly very useful Dan. We currently have a Trauma, and have noticed how stiff it is and everytime I refill the Aquaroll it has to be removed and refitted again. The Whale looks a much better design. Looks like you've helped me spend money again, although for a beneficial reason! Best wishes to you all.
Been having the same issues. We're on site at the moment and I have actually broken the clip trying to get it to latch to the van. Like you say it's just too flimsy. Didn't realise I could change the pump, next on the list !!
Watching this video and found myself thinking yes me too, and again, and again. Ordering a whale pump for that hassle free ease of use. Thank you for the video, most useful
Get rid of the Aqua roll all together. Just buy the Truma Ultraflow Waterline that runs straight to tap. Saying that, the Truma Pumps are very tinny and it did leak a bit even when it was brand new when I first used it. Every time you unplugged it, it felt like it was going to break apart.
Have a chat with your local roofer, ask them for a small sheet of lead and wrap it round the pump head. The weight will keep it down at the bottom where it belongs. Keep it tight with plastic pull through tie.
Lead? in fresh water? nope. To keep it down, just use a straight section of plastic pipe, split down one side. that will hold the pump straight facing the bottom of the Aquaroll.
Great Video Dan, We have a lot of customers approaching us asking for a Truma Ultraflow pump when we hand them the Whale Ultraflow pump they look at us a little 'surprised' . We advise them that we feel it's a much superior product and your words of wisdom supports this.
Hi Dan Brilliant Video. I have trouble with my Truma pump as well and Ive been blaming the onboard water pump for my problem but after watching you video I thought time for me to change my pump as well.Picked one up at the Caravan and Motorhome show I think I was robbed price wise but it cured my problem .At first fill when we set up and wanted to use water I had loads of water hammer at the onboard water pump. After just raising pump and andplacing back in the barrel a couple of times the water hammer has now gone which allows my onboard water pump to run quieter .. I thought this may help other users. Thanks again for the reviews
Hi thanks for your superb video, I've got a Sterling Eccles Ruby that has an internal Flojet pump which is turned on or off by a switch on the control panel inside, does this pump just turn on by itself? cheers
Well done dan the man. I like truma products and the company they are very professional and great at design....... however when we got our 2015 Lunar it came with a truma outboard pump and wed only used whale in all our previous vans. What an under whelming experience with exactly thr issues you said. So as ever brill video. More power to your elbow
Another great Vlogg again Dan. Can i ask you your Truma Ultraflow had the pump on the end, My Truma has a filter with a onboard pump is there a Whale adaptor for that one? been on to Whale website and it is a little confusing for me.
Have had issues with the Trauma (as you have) and do not like the design at all so going for a Whale. Do you have any advice for adjusting the pressure to avoid all the pump noise? Or did the Whale pump sort this? One guy said the pumps are supposed to over-run for a few seconds after you switch a tap off to pressurize?
Hi Dan just taken your advice and upgraded to the whale pump, not able to test it yet due to our van being in for shower repair. I am thinking about the fix for the pump turning up in the water container.
Hi Dan. First timer here with a Lunar Ultima 2015. I have the Truma Ultraflow, which came with the van. Stored in the sink bowl, it has several kinks, problem one, and lifts in the aquaroll so sometimes it's running dry, and it's sheer luck I hear it and rush out to dip it into the water. Will the whale model here replace this one? If so, I'll get one and keep the truma for a spare. Thanks so much for your advice. Les
1st time to your YT channel, but I have to say, that was excellent. Excellent video and audio quality and content VERY well explained. Will check out your other videos and will probably subscribe on the basis of this one. Regards Mark in the UK
Hi Dan. Another great video. Just purchased our first van and found your content invaluable. Quick question about this... Do you find you still have a fair amount of water in the barrel when the pump is not able to draw water?? Any tips to get the most out of the barrel?? Get the most pipe in??? Just enough to touch the bottom?? Tia. Andy
Hi Dan, we have a Coachman 575/4 7 years old with Truma system. Have bought a Whale pump to replace our Truma one. The Whale pump will not work though the Truma one does. Is our van and Truma smart switch programmed to only work with Truma pumps ? Many thanks Brenda
Hi Dan - I followed your lead and swapped water pumps and there has been a positive difference. However, it still float up in the aquaria. So, having looked at your recent video on 'The Aquaroll' I noted your comment on the 'Pump Connection' which holds the pump at the bottom of the container. So I bought one. I think you know what comes next - how do you use it? Do I have to disconnect the pump from the hose and electrics and thread it through then re-connect? Or have I just lost the plot!! Your advise would be very much appreciated. Trust you and your family are well and well have good times away this summer. Cheers. Mike
A easy fix if your confident and a bodger. I would shorten both inlet and wiring to pump connector inlet so it wont bend to the extent of breaking or and leave enough to fit in to aqua roll.
Hi Dan, We have the Truma pistol grip thingy but no pump on the end, the pump is onboard. Same issue though its a pig to fit or remove, the whole fitting on the 'van side flexes and I'm sure it'll shatter in cold weather. Do Whale do a version to replace the Truma jobby i.e. pistiol grip and hose but no pump? Buying the part you show for c£50 then cutting off the pump would be a bit steep.
Just a minor point is that the trauma (spell checked changed it from Truma to trauma which is ironic) does actually have a similar clip to hold the pipe whilst you’re refilling. It’s the little blue clip on top of I remember correctly. Having said that you are entirely correct in that it is a dreadful design for all the reasons you pointed out. Wish I’d known that whale made that alternative but I have whale now anyway as changed van.
Great product review! I didn't know that Whale did a Truma fitting but now I do I will be getting one for next season. The truma pump is glued on to the pipe which meant I could not replace it with a generic pump when I had an issue a while ago. Is the Whale one the same, or is there just a jubilee clip?
Wished I'd seen this video earlier as we had this problem recently when we ran out of water at Burford (just after dark!). Re-filled the Aqua Roll and when connected with the Truma pump got drenched when the pipe connector had come off inside the pump connector at the caravan end. As a result got drenched , cut finger and sweaing trying to get the offending Truma clip back onto the pipe once back inside the caravan iwhere there was some light Ended up repairing with a s/steel jubilee clip and some electrical tape to stop the jubilee clip touching the spade connectors. My brother had the same problem with his coming off too. Anyone who hasnt replaced their Truma pump might want to do this fix before it happens to them. Now thanks to Dans vids off fix the loo warning light and make some LED awning lights.
We are caravan newbies; We have Truma Ultraflow, no filter + Water Hog Tank; Blue cap on pipe is too small for the water hog threaded outlet so we either need to get an acquaroll that fits the Truma pump etc or a Whale pump that fits the water hog...can you advise us? Also it strikes us that if you are on a serviced pitch with mains water, the Truma Ultraflow can take that flow without needing the pump to operate...We have a 2013 Eccles Sport 442
@@TheTrudgians Ok mate wonder if you could help please. I have got a bailey 2006 caravan. I am a complete novice to caravaning the problem I have is the pump is not turning off. It runs all the time even when all Taps are closed what could this be would I have to change the blue pump which plugs from van & sits in water butt. Any advice would be great thanks mate
Why doesn't the truma ultraflow pump fit into the barrel. Do you have to have a specific water barrel for these pumps the opening on the top is too small to put it in ??
If your like me and wondering does this pump make any difference to the water pressure in the van compared to the truma pump. Then read no further...it does...infact it’s like a power shower now compared to the once pitiful excuse of a shower produced by the truma pump. Purchased and tested this week.
Huge thanks for this Dan, I've been struggling to work out which Whale Pump model replaces that Ultraflow. We've been away twice now in our new caravan and I'm not a fan of the Truma pump so have been looking for a replacement.
Hi, we have a bailey grande pegasus rimimi used last year fine great water pressure, this year water pressure is very very low. The pump pipe was kinked and i have had to fix the metal clips back on as one came off on this pump. Do you think this will be causing such low water pressure? Thanks
Hi we also have had issues with the brand new external Truma ultraflow pump coming apart so we took your advice and upgraded to the whale pump you suggested. Unfortunately this pump is blowing the fuse every time we connect it. Have you any suggestions?
Hi Susan, Oh dear - that doesn't sound good. perhaps you have a faulty unit. I would recommend you exchange it, it certainly shouldn't be blowing fuses - it pulls very little current, so for a fuse blow i would think it is either jammed or faulty. I recommend a replacement. Hope that helps Dan
Hi very informative video. I have an older caravan, our first van. The water inlet is broken. There is a hair line crack inside the van. It's a cascade. Do you know if I can convert it to a whale?
Useful video.thanks We have the Truma system but our problem is different, namely, the system does not shut off when pressure is reached. perhaps a video highlighting the problem and the remedy?
my caravan has a Whale water system and I can say that I have had no problem with it ,but can't compare with other makes as I have only ever had whale.
Hi Dan, I hope that you are well. We have on our Lunar the Truma ultraflow system. I used it for the first time since fitting a new inlet due to the old one cracking, I had the problem of the handle getting stuck and needing to be prised out with my multi tool. Have you come across this problem and if you have , how did you solve it? Cheers Richard.
It does always feel like it may break. But I just unplug the pump from socket Then lift from barrel Refill barrel Pump into barrel then its a straight run to plug back in. When my truma pump does break I will take your advice and purchase the whale equivilant. Cheers
Thank you. Not just me having problems with the Truma pump then. To be blunt, it's quite rubbish isn't it? We managed to over bend it, causing a leak. It's so flimsy and inflexible. Not a good design at all, come on Truma you can do better than this! So I'll take your advice and fork out for the EP1642, as we have a Truma ultra flow system.
Sorry, sent that too early. What I was going to say was, I appear to have the Truma Ultraflow fitted but I cannot tell if it is the standard one, the compact or the winter. It is a bit confusing. What I WANT to do is fit a filter system so I was looking at the conversion kits for the Ultraflow. The trouble is I don't really know what I have now so I don't know if there is a replacement and , if there is, what one to go for. My aim is to filter the water coming into the caravan. It is potable water but I want to take out the taste and particulates. I really cannot work out where I am now and if there is a suitable solution. Any ideas? Ray
Hi can you do a video on noisy internal pumps. We have a 2009 Buccaneer Caravel and the pumps are very noisy I can’t find a Uk video on quietening then down or a quite replacement.
Thankyou 'The Trudgians' - like many others I've been having problems with the Truma for 2 years, way too stiff, won't turn into the Aquaroll due to the height issue and keeps blowing the hose end off! thought it was just me, like you I also had problems turning the aquaroll on its side, not least (without realising) the top cap leaks so on its side all the water slowly drains out. Also felt I was going to break the damned thing every time I connected it. So many times I've had to stand outside pressing down on the hose in order for the thing to unkink so we can have water! - excellent review on your experience, thank you for sharing .. I can see light at the end of the tunnel and water emerging the taps!!! .. just one last thing! is the flow volume from the Whale a match for the Truma?
Stuart Lawson hi Stuart - glad to have helped. No the flow rate isn’t the same. It’s far far greater. It really is light & day. Also after months of usage I must add that initial priming and air locks are now also vastly improved. Hope that helps.
Hi Dan. I really like all your videos there all really interesting. I have a question can these whale pumps still be used if the caravan has an onboard pump . I currently use a truma pipe so I have a plug on one end and just a filter on the other end.
Quick question - do you hook up the pump when refilling without removing from van - and have you had any air locks / issues with this? I always used to remove the Truma pump completely - but this Whale option seems to encourage not bothering? cheers
Hi, I have an internal pump which I’m having no end of trouble with it constantly trying to pressurise (definitely no leaks!) can I remove my internal pump and just have the external one?
Yeah, i see no reason why not. new housing, and attach the existing wiring to the new terminals. If you use the Whale housing, they have 3 terminals (2 for power, 1 for illuminating the pump in use led) and an inbuilt pressure switch. The housing requires a 12v feed (always on when the pump is switched on from the panel) - so this might be the neatest solution for you.
Hi Dan, Having problems with a Bailey Discovery with the Ultraflow system fitted. We can only get hot water for approx 3 mins tops, then the combi will stop heating water, the hot water icon on the display flashes and we get a nice smell of hot metal/plastic through the vents? Could this be down to a lack of flow from one of these pumps or more likely a combi fault?? Thank you.
Hi Mike, i would look at the flow that the pump is pulling through. it maybe the pump pipe is kinked, or some debris in the pump filter. i would recommend you speak with your dealer though and see what they suggest.
Dan thanks for this. I do have a couple of Q's though - I presume the pump needs power - where does it get this from? I have a new 2017 swift conqueror. It came without a pump just the truma filter lead & so im guessing this pump/filter wont effect the onboard one?
Hi Steve, Okay it might be best to check what you have in your van. These are submersible pumps that take the poor from the connection on the side of the caravan, it sounds like you have an inboard pump. You can call Whale and check what they have for you in terms of upgrading. I hope that helps. Dan
Just came across this video but not before I had a problem with my Truma pump failing. By accident I couldn’t get a replacement and instead got a Whale pump. What a difference! Easier to fit and a really flexible pipe making it much easier when you swap from one aqua roll to another.
Just upgraded my old van to the ultra flow system and decided to buy the whale pp off the back of this video. Brilliant advice
Excellent. FYI - I’m still using this very same pump now, even when I thought I broke it, it was just a corroded terminal on the caravan. - so they do last!
That's brilliant. Thank you for the video. 👍🏻

No problems.

Very interesting, thankyou. Just about to purchase my first second hand 2 berth caravan and find your videos invaluable as I'm a complete novice.
Oh Dan you need to think outside the box! Get a spade dig a hole drop in the aquaroll and hey presto problem solved!

Hi, thank you for your advice on the whale pump v the Truma - I have had the same problems so I will be going for the Whalke next time
Hi Dan. I agree. The Whale is a much better pump assembly all round. It is a bit longer than the Truma as well so suits more situations. Steve.
Hi Steve, yes thats a good point also.
Take care
Dan
Thanks for that we are always having pump trouble and go through so many, will take a look at that one..
At last! a quick easy explanation, thanks Dan, saved me loads of research!.

Do you have any advice for adjusting the pressure to avoid all the pump noise? Or did the Whale pump sort this? One guy said the pumps are supposed to over-run for a few seconds after you switch a tap off to pressurize?
Is the new pump you bought a more power full pump
Les
Very useful video. Do the caravan indicators and pump auto-stop still work as they should if you use a Whale as opposed to a Truma?
Thanks for that. I have had the same problem so will give this a try.
Another great, useful and informative vlog Dan. Looks a great product, thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Great product review! I didn't know that Whale did a Truma fitting but now I do I will be getting one for next season. The truma pump is glued on to the pipe which meant I could not replace it with a generic pump when I had an issue a while ago. Is the Whale one the same, or is there just a jubilee clip?
Hi , would you have any ideas on how to free the impeller, only used twice and it’s seized.
Wished I'd seen this video earlier as we had this problem recently when we ran out of water at Burford (just after dark!).
Re-filled the Aqua Roll and when connected with the Truma pump got drenched when the pipe connector had come off inside the pump connector at the caravan end.
As a result got drenched , cut finger and sweaing trying to get the offending Truma clip back onto the pipe once back inside the caravan iwhere there was some light
Ended up repairing with a s/steel jubilee clip and some electrical tape to stop the jubilee clip touching the spade connectors.
Always great info from you Dan. Thanks!!
Thank you !
Did you the whale was quicker to pump the water..we have Truma it takes forever to fill ,?
Hi can you please tell me how would you clean the food grade water pipe that you use on a serviced pitch ???
Thanks Dan, lots of helpful advice.
No problem, glad to be of service
Dan
Hi Dan , any tip on getting the air out of the Truman pump when setting up . Thanks Jason
Hi, we have a bailey grande pegasus rimimi used last year fine great water pressure, this year water pressure is very very low. The pump pipe was kinked and i have had to fix the metal clips back on as one came off on this pump. Do you think this will be causing such low water pressure? Thanks
Hi
we also have had issues with the brand new external Truma ultraflow pump coming apart so we took your advice and upgraded to the whale pump you suggested.
Hope that helps
Dan
Link to Amazon states its 12 Volt? Is it electric?
Thanks for this.
Hi. Does this pump fit the Bailey ranger 2008 500/5 caravan? Thanks.
my caravan has a Whale water system and I can say that I have had no problem with it ,but can't compare with other makes as I have only ever had whale.
Brilliant. My problem solved. Thank you so much.
Cheers
Richard.
Do you find the whale gives better water pressure ? I have the truma and find the pressure disappointing. Great videos BTW
Morning,
Yes the flow was a marked improvement. I did initially put this down to the pipe not being kinked when inserted into the aqua roll.
Dan
It does always feel like it may break.
But I just unplug the pump from socket
Then lift from barrel
Refill barrel
Pump into barrel then its a straight run to plug back in.
When my truma pump does break I will take your advice and purchase the whale equivilant.
Cheers
That's what I thought. Pretty simple really 🤣
Would make the video too short though 😜
We have a 2009 Buccaneer Caravel and the pumps are very noisy I can’t find a Uk video on quietening then down or a quite replacement.
hi dan great review lots of usefull info for future reference thanks
It sure does! Thanks again .. just bought the Whale from Amazon!
Hi Dan. I really like all your videos there all really interesting. I have a question can these whale pumps still be used if the caravan has an onboard pump . I currently use a truma pipe so I have a plug on one end and just a filter on the other end.
Nice one anyone got any good ideas to stop the noisy pumps that creates vibration through the swift caravan
Yep gotta agree, the whale pump is loads better
does the caravan not have a pump
Hi Dan,
Having problems with a Bailey Discovery with the Ultraflow system fitted.
@@TheTrudgians Thank you. We have the van booked in for a look over.
Nice info, do you know if whale do a hose kit for a serviced site for the ultraflow?
Hi yes there is - have a look at this, it includes an adaptor for the Truma Ultra Flow systems.
amzn.to/2mm0Att
thanks dan thats my problem sorted
Dan thanks for this. I do have a couple of Q's though - I presume the pump needs power - where does it get this from? I have a new 2017 swift conqueror. It came without a pump just the truma filter lead & so im guessing this pump/filter wont effect the onboard one?
Hi Steve,
Okay it might be best to check what you have in your van. These are submersible pumps that take the poor from the connection on the side of the caravan, it sounds like you have an inboard pump. You can call Whale and check what they have for you in terms of upgrading.
I hope that helps.
Dan
