Apparently Satie remarked that he liked the part at quarter to eleven in La Mer. Guess Cras took the times a little more literally than Debussy...

This work is actually different from Debussy's in one important aspect: it's a mariner's experience of the sea, a Navy man to be more precise. It's anthropomorphic. Debussy's work is elemental in that it's about the sea itself, without any human involved.

Exactly what I wrote in my biography of Cras (2nd edition to be released Dec. 2021)

Yeah, I don't get the similarities to La Mer. I mean, there are some similar elements sometimes in the orchestration, but this is still a very original work. That 3rd movement is definitely amazing and high quality.

Wow what a cheaply made knock-off of Debussy's La Mer (as completed by C. Debussy) ! Nice try.

Come on, it's not a cheap knock-off, is really a great piece. Not as much as Debussy's, and it will be always suffer for its clear inspirational source, but it's still well made and more original than the average Impressionist minor composer. :)

      @@SPscorevideos sorry, it was a joke😂
I was remixing a comment on an Artyomov piece that said 'Wow what a cheaply made knock-off of Scirabin's Prefactory Act - III. Transfiguration (as completed by A. Nemtin) ! Nice try.'

      Totally gratuitous.
      You're obviously - and seriously - misguided.

From what I know about Cras he was pretty high-minded; certainly no mere hack. Other than the subject I don't hear any connections to Debussy's piece. If this beautiful composition reminds me of anything , it is early Roussel, say AR's First Symphony. There is something archaic, plainchant about that and there is no such in Debussy's La Mer. Might as well compare it to Anton Rubenstein's " Ocean" Symphony. ( No.)
