How to make a glass fish replica

- Glass blowing was invented around 50 BC and revolutionised the production of glass vessels.
Watch Bill Gudenrath, a glass specialist at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, make a copy of one of the fish-shaped vessels found at Begram, Afghanistan.
This is the first time anyone has tried to replicate it.
See the original glass fish on display in the exhibition Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World until 17 July 2011.

Yep

Lmao 😂
Love the way the blue glass fades from the hot red to purple and then that deep blue.
Finally a glass blowing video without a ridiculous soundtrack, the sound of the craft is part of the experience I think, excellent work, I liked the part where the rough end was trimmed off.
Absolutely hooked at that moment. The precision! rewatched at least a few times!
I love watching a master at work, no wasted steps.
Me too
Glass is scary
So beautiful when the molten glass goes from orange to purple to blue.
I really just went through the entire comment section three times to find the Hubert Applebaum comment, but I still couldn't find it :(
It looks so simple yet difficult to do at the same time
Hola preciosa
Everything looks simple, until you try to do it yourslef.

Came for Hubert, stayed for the mellow glass blowing demo.
The dexterity and coordination of glass-blowers always amazes me. Bill Gudenrath is clearly an absolute master at his craft. Thank you for posting this video.
WHERE IS HUBERT
Chad The sad dad idk 😮😮😮
I went through every comment and didn't see him.... Found the screenshot of the video though.

Does anyone else just want to eat the molten glass? Not literally, just the way the texture looks :P
You could eat sugar glass. Looks around the same.
it's like the seen from gr inch when he eats the light bulb
It is common, humans have an atraction to certain textures. As babies to learn how something feels we will often "gum" it or use our mouths to learn the texture. Another thing that adds to this is PICCA people crave things like cornstarch, clay, sand, dirt, and so on. I use to eat 4 glasses of ice a day because I loved the texture and had a sever mineral deficiency, another odd thing I love the smell of chlorine and gasoline. It legit makes my mouth water and i get thirsty of course youd never drink it unless youre cray cray, but when i was 12 I watched my dad syphon gas out of the mower for my go kart and one day copied him cause no one was home to go get gas. HUGE mistake taste HORRIBLE lol..I know for me that I love those smells due to the fact it triggers the memory of good happy child hood experiences like going in the pool or smelling the gas in a mower in the summer time. The show my stranger addiction is a good example of this people who are not capable of self soothing and endured a trumatic event will become obsessed and addicted to these type of comforts when triggered, really rather dangerous.
GT Tree Trunkz nice copy and paste

Well ... this is art
I'd say craftsmanship rather than art, but I guess that's a matter of opinion.
Am I the only one here who just came for *the* comment?
I cant find it!
Hubert XD
Hahhahahaa me too
Yeah
Hubert!!!!!!!
Really cool! Thank you for your work :)
Hi clayclaim! I love your Clash Royale videos!
A classic example of Italian-style glassblowing. I don't know how did Afghans do it 2000 years ago.
Still, I can't help noticing, that the fish that goes into the kiln (7:15) is a different one from the one that is cut by thermal shocking at 7:40. Multiple attempts, I guess, that would be normal. Great master!
This is so freaking amazing to watch... i'm glad there is at least one profession that still requires a skilled artist to craft the product, instead of the products just being mass produced in a factory by machines
Came for the comment, stayed for the mesmerizing glass blowing
It's people like this that I call true talent not the singer or the actors but the craftsman of our world
You think singers don't have talent?
No they do but in my opinion craftsman make and create our world
Matthew Zapata I'm guessing your boyfriend is a craftsman?

Gudenrath is a glass blowing badass. Such skill and precision. He's truly peerless.
why is this so relaxing to watch
Jun Ng you made me lol
Jun Ng idk...im little high but it was funny
Jun Ng You ruined your own joke
Jun Ng ....literally bringing up conversations from 30 days ago lmao
Jun Ng lol no! this must just piss you off haha
I was just watching his confidence level... he was making that stuff so flawlessly...
I just find this absolutely fascinating. I have always admired people who have this skill with glass and crystal. Stunningly-beautiful, but relaxing to watch too.
The difference in temperature between the molten glass and the cooler glass caused it to blast apart at the point of contact because the glass molecules were expanding right there very rapidly. Its like if you pour boiling liquid into a thin juice glass, it will break apart, or sometimes a glass casserole will crack apart if it is placed on the cool metal of the stovetop straight out of the oven.
I always cut my glass. This is a much better technique- very clean.
For those of you that don't know, Mr. Gudenrath is a true master of his craft, and an expert on Venetian glassworking
Came for *The Comment* stayed for the content
This the first video I have seen where you actually not only are witness but actually see what the artist is doing. I mean actually seeing the scoop of glass, actually seeing a bubble start inside the glass.... it is amazing as an artform but this video sure is an excellent piece of work showing off the magic of it all.
I've scrolled until the end of the comment section and I never found Hubert.😔 Hubert why?😔🖐️
WAAAAAA
Question:
Does this guy EVER make mistakes? I mean, he's so good at this that he makes this look SO easy.
Bills a forensic reconstruction specialist on these as well as a glassblower. He's not just trying to replicate the finished product but give as much insight as possible into how the ancients did it.
This is relaxing to watch idk why.
yea
In the beginning it looked like a lightbulb
True
i cant be the only one who wanted to see the bubble pop
this is by far the best thing i have seen all week!
I feel like everyone here within the last 6-8 months came here for Hubert. I'm guilty as well
praise this craftmanship
Best part of this was watching the bright red fade to blue/purple, this is too cool
That blue glass is gorgeous.
this is amazing
Not enough people in the comments recognising just how fancy this fish is. This is perhaps the fanciest fish I've ever seen 🐠
Amazing!
Ive seen alot of horses and vases but this is the first fish its really amazing.
Blown glass is such a beautiful and elegant art. Learning how to create beautiful sculptures with this technic is definitely on my bucket list!
That fish looks adorable!
Glass blowing can be dangerous, but it looks cool and fun, as long as you're VERY careful, safe, and trained in the arts of glass, you can show off you're creativity!
u are so creative ,hat's off to all who knows to create beautiful glass souvenirs it's good see so relaxing
Hubert where u at
the way his hands move, like watching a chef cut sushi or a surgeon, real skill
that fish tail removal technique is just tooo cool
This is a beautiful work of art. No meme required
That was nice. When I was in high school we worked with molten metal, but we just bored it into molds. I wished we could have made glass.
7:50 I legitimately said 'wow' out loud. That's a neat trick.
I knew a woman who worked at Epcot who'd creating candy sculptures. It was a lot like this!
I did as well. It is amazing to see what they can do.
Oops, maybe lead diamonds for the fishes eyes too? Either way, it's a really cute fish!
And that kids is how u make a bong
this video was so relaxing for some reason
Anyone who came here from dank memes page

I find this video oddly satisfying 😏

CAME HERE FOR HUBERT BUT the COMMENTS GONE NOW :(
We didn't delete it. Where'd it go?
someone said that Hubert deleted it himself apparently
I love that the actual channel with over 350k subscribers replied to this comment 8 years after the video was uploaded.
Hubert deleted it? :(
Technically that was the first time on camera! Bill does at least ten or twelve practices first. Because Bills just that insistent on being precise.
Now that's craftsmanship :)
Only just seen the meme and came here to check see if it was true
I was not disappointed
oh my god.... if I tried to do that ,I would just mess it up
what an art
amazing creativity👍👍
The fish replica is awesome 👌👌
These guys are unbelieveable. Some of that stuff, like when they guestimate by eye and get it exactly right where the piece is supposed to go, doesn't look possible.
Holy crap that little trick to get the end to pop off was soooooo cool. xD
amazing. salute for the skill
This was so satisfying to watch!
It sure is a piece of art!!!
such intricate piece of work! impressive!
This is in my list of 100 things to do before i die its defiantly in the top 20
Amazing I've been making glass and it's harder than it looks but fun and I practice everyday no joke
Fascinating, thanks ! But I would have loved to see the final result.
Lovely bit work.
it's too satisfying for me

Really amazing work
This job is hard either you hurt yourself or you mess the job. Wow welldone sir!
I thought, that's weird. Why didn't they show a picture of what the original looked like? I did a google search, and it's because, as skilled as this man is, made something that vaguely resembles the original xD
Wow I didn't know you can melt glass. Always wondered how these were made.
