How to make a glass fish replica

  • Glass blowing was invented around 50 BC and revolutionised the production of glass vessels.
Watch Bill Gudenrath, a glass specialist at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, make a copy of one of the fish-shaped vessels found at Begram, Afghanistan.
This is the first time anyone has tried to replicate it.
See the original glass fish on display in the exhibition Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World until 17 July 2011.

It is common, humans have an atraction to certain textures. As babies to learn how something feels we will often "gum" it or use our mouths to learn the texture. Another thing that adds to this is PICCA people crave things like cornstarch, clay, sand, dirt, and so on. I use to eat 4 glasses of ice a day because I loved the texture and had a sever mineral deficiency, another odd thing I love the smell of chlorine and gasoline. It legit makes my mouth water and i get thirsty of course youd never drink it unless youre cray cray, but when i was 12 I watched my dad syphon gas out of the mower for my go kart and one day copied him cause no one was home to go get gas. HUGE mistake taste HORRIBLE lol..I know for me that I love those smells due to the fact it triggers the memory of good happy child hood experiences like going in the pool or smelling the gas in a mower in the summer time. The show my stranger addiction is a good example of this people who are not capable of self soothing and endured a trumatic event will become obsessed and addicted to these type of comforts when triggered, really rather dangerous.

A classic example of Italian-style glassblowing. I don't know how did Afghans do it 2000 years ago.
Still, I can't help noticing, that the fish that goes into the kiln (7:15) is a different one from the one that is cut by thermal shocking at 7:40. Multiple attempts, I guess, that would be normal. Great master!

The difference in temperature between the molten glass and the cooler glass caused it to blast apart at the point of contact because the glass molecules were expanding right there very rapidly. Its like if you pour boiling liquid into a thin juice glass, it will break apart, or sometimes a glass casserole will crack apart if it is placed on the cool metal of the stovetop straight out of the oven.
I always cut my glass. This is a much better technique- very clean.
