  • first time setting up a crosscut saw with jointing/filing/testing. after all was said and done, the willow was really grabby on the saw and I think I'm rocking too much in the cut and creating points that my rakers hang on. I need to work form. rakers are all at .012, teeth set to .015.. pulled OK noodles, no whiskers, just short ones, but the wood is getting pretty old/ dry at this point. I need some green stock to test in.

Looks like winter has set in for you. I suspect that any movement in your stands will work against you. Thanks for taking us along.

Yeah, MN dropped some snow on us recently. The temps are starting to get lower too. But you're correct, as soon as the stand moved a little the saw wanted to bind. I'll be making a proper saw bunk here soon. Thank you for coming along with me!

Thank you! It's been fun learning to file, and look forward to learning to run the saws better too!

I'm an amateur crosscut saw filer, so this was helpful to know what to set my rakers to for cutting (I've been getting fine dust, haha)

I am too! The crosscut saw manual is quite helpful and the crosscut saw filer videos on RUclips here are helpful videos put out by the US forest service. Glad I could help! That .012 is a good starting point I think and a recommendation I've heard frequently. But you may find you need to go a little longer or shorter depending on the wood you're running it through. I'd start longer, test cut, then keep filing/swaging down a little at a time until you like the way it's cutting. Best of luck!

You seemed to be hanging up a lot on your strokes. I often see that with sawyers who don't "pull straight" and bend the saws toward their bodies as they cut. Next video set up your camera to sight down the length of the blade and see if you're curving it. I don't like Jemco saws but I've filed lots of them. I usually set that flat plate at 0.015". If you plan to use it as a single bucker, file your lead rakers at 0.012" and your trailing (pull) rakers at 0.010" and see how that works. Since you put more forward energy into the push stroke, the saw will bite deeper. Are you back honing your set and cutting your rakers with a sloping (Anderson) gauge? Frozen wood can get frosty as the blade gets warm traveling through the kerf and freezes up on the way back in. Get some diesel on that saw.

I definitely was hanging, and you're correct. I found better cutting once I got more comfortable/even with my stroke. I unfortunately do not have an Anderson/slope filing gauge currently. I just filed the rakers a bit thinner then swaged to the pin gauge set at .012 and cleaned up the bottom edge of the swage with a small round file to take any rolling out. I'm going to be looking for a sloped gauge, however, as what I did isn't very precise overall. And I didn't even think of differentially filing the rakers, makes sense though, I'll try that on one of my other saws. I do intend on primarily single bucking. Thank you for the advice!

As far as lubricants, I keep forgetting to pick up diesel or some citrus cleaner... I have an old squeeze bottle I'm intending for that purpose, but just need to do it haha
