  • We're going for gold in this one. This is the Epiphone Les Paul '56 Gold Top. It sports a pair of P90 pickups and is an ideal instrument for all kinds of six string madness. I take an in-depth look into this guitar, as well as provide some sound samples, both in a mix and solo, to give you the best experience before you pick one up for yourself. There is always room for another guitar on your rack and P90s are a must!

    When asking 'why' questions about Epiphone, the answer is always financial.
    It's a budget guitar that's built to a price point. Things can (and do) change throughout the production run, because cheaper alternatives are sourced.
    You can get very good ones - I had a 2001 Epiphone that I owned for 10 years.
    Ultimately, when asking why the did something, the answer is, 'to save a few bucks'.

    I have the 2017 version of this guitar. It has the fattest neck I have ever played but honestly you get used to it very quickly. The P90 PRO pickups are simply the best. I have a Gibson Les Paul with P90s and I much prefer the Epiphone--smoother and less harsh. And it does the "woman tone" to perfection--neck pickup with the tone control all the way off with just a touch of gain. I love it. BTW mine weighs just 7.8lb.

      The 56 series is truly a gem in the Epiphone line all the way through!

  • @BengtNordsten
    @BengtNordsten 4 месяца назад

    I have the ebony version. It's made like a '56 Gibson goldtop, and all the standard creme/pink plastic, but black lacquer finish, making it an oddity (though probably not rare). The era's Standard had a maple cap, and the tone would be a bit "crisp" for single-coil pickups, so it got the warmer HBs. The straight-up (non-goldtop) Custom was black on an uncapped mahogany body, with black P90 pickups, ebony fretboard, gold hardware, black knobs and pickguard; the ebony fretboard was intended to create a crisper tone, roughly approximating the Standard model's maple cap. The "ebony goldtop" straddles these models.
    Stories vary, so either Gibson has a surplus of goldtops or kept having finish issues, and they just blasted 'em black. Late in life, Ted McCarty said, "We were having more and more of a problem getting real good clear mahogany from Honduras. We’d get mahogany and it’d have streaks in it and whatnot. So that Les Paul Custom ... was not a sandwich, it was solid mahogany - but painted black. So, you had some with streaks in it? You made Customs out of it! Dolled it up fancy with binding and other things on it, and sold it for a higher price.”

    I was able to find one of these a while back. The Epi 56 Gold Top is a Home run in my book. This thing is built like a tank. I think for they are the best bang for your buck out there. The problem is finding one.

      They are crazy on the used market. A red one like mine came up yesterday for like $600 and someone in a Facebook group I'm in snatched it up so quick! Epiphone would make a killing if they reissued them! Look at the JJN guitars and how well they sell/sold. We can only hope!

      One last question for you, because we were both thinking the same about this guitar. I was thinking of swapping out the pickups also. I find the middle position with both pups on to be my favorite tone wise. The bridge and neck a bit dull on their own in my opinion. This is my first and only P 90 guitar. What pickups are you thinking about installing? I’m all ears on this…..lol.

    I bought a new one of those in 2010. Amazing axe and it was only $400 back then . Love the p90’s. Thick ass neck but you get comfortable with it in two minutes. Yours looks like the gold color is a little mellower than mine . Mine has really big sparkle flakes . Cheers!

      Mine is a bit of a different beast. The neck isn't super thick, at least not as thick as my 1956 Pros. It's not anything bad, just I figured it would be a 50s neck. The color is a bit of an oddity, I agree. Not very vibrant but I dig it nonetheless. Thanks for watching, dude!

    Started by liking the vid, but ended up being of the opinion that it would have been significantly better if there was more genuine sample of proper / pure tones that the instrument provides rather than distortion / metal tones. Surely a 'proper' review would address the true tones of an instrument rather than enhancements - of any description, other than perhaps reverb - such as distortion / overdrive. Even the poorest of instruments can be heard as sounding 'good' when significant distortion / overdrive / metal pedals are added? Just my take. Bring it on. (BTW, I own one ... a Feb 2006 Chinese manuf in 2006. Just purchased it today 2nd hand. I have a Gibbo of the same description and other guitars but I wanted a cheaper, yet solid Gold Top LP version, for other reasons. My comments are sent in good faith.

    I’m about to buy my first epiphone,
    Please help me, this one “56 gold top” or a Les Paul standard Plustop Pro?
    Any suggestions??

    • @Electric.Flamingo
      @Electric.Flamingo  2 года назад +2

      It really depends on the sound you want. Humbuckers are thick and round, which is what would be in the Plustop Pro and P90s in the 56 are punchy and throaty. The 56 will have a thicker neck than the Plustop, I would think since it's spec'd like a 50s.
      Long story short, if you want a humbucker sound with a thinner neck, get the Plustop. If you want a P90 sound with a thicker neck, get the 56.
