Good MORNING! I had a 68 Gibson Gold Top with P-90 pickups. years ago! I Sold It.. SINCE 1996, have had The Epi. 56 Gold Top.. I have never had a problem with the guitar! I Gigged with the Epi. In THREE DIFFERENT BANDS.. and don't see enough DIFFERENCE, brtween the TWO, to worry about.. NICE GUITAR, at a Fair Price! 😎
I upgraded my 56 gold top to tonerider Alnico 2 Vintage P90's and proper full size pots and wiring and what a difference..........................it blooms like you wouldn't believe, but on the bridge with some drive can rock with the best. It has the proper vintage tone to it now.
@@camerond8176 Ah - how cool! Been thinking about checking some other PUs… But I‘m quite happy with these actually… Probably one day though just to see… Cheers! 🙌🏻
I have the Epi 56 Goldtop too. I don't have the Gibson counterpart to compare but I do have a Gibson LP Special with P90s and I prefer the sound of the Epi. It is somehow smoother and less harsh.
First of all just to say great demo and thanks for using clean tones - impossible to judge the true sound of a guitar when they use an array of pedals and fx. The second comment is how well the epi held its own against the Gibson! Yes, I would say the Gibson had a slightly fuller, woodier tone, maybe 10-15% better - certainly not six times better which is what the price difference would be!
I have the 56 Epi that is surprising. Sometimes while playing the Epi gets a bell like undertone in the higher frequencies, I really like this sound. The Gibson has really clean strong mid to low response, I like this also! Other people hear different or use other terms to describe sound. I'm sure the Gibson has the quality that you feel when you pick it up. Great playing!
Great video...superb playing....exactly what i needed to hear...nice clean tones!!!! I'm picking up the this Epiphone 56 goldtop later today so this was very helpful with my decision...subscribed 😊
I thought the Epiphone sounded better, especially on the clean tones . They are also two different shades of Gold. I prefer the shade on the Epiphone as well. Great video!
I was reading the comments while listening to the video and it just sounded like you were playing the same guitar all the way through, just, like, changing pickups, picking style etc. I was waiting for the 2nd one, but then you started talking. (PS I really dig your playing style!)
Great playing. WOW!! You certainly show the difference in clarity between the two. Unfortunately I have more of a "muddy" budget (and nowhere near your skill) so I am currently waiting for delivery of an Epiphone '56 in Chicago blue. I already know I am going to love it (and I was born in '56, which got the wife on side with the purchase!) so I shall try and do it justice. Lovely to watch and listen to you, thanks!
You will certainly do it‘s justice! I think they are great guitars! And with a tweak here and there can sound as clear as a gibson! Enjoy! And thanks🙏🏻
That is how a demo should be. No overdrive making them sound like any/every other guitar that you often get with the player showing off how fast he can play - boring! Nice playing too. I think the Gibson had a slightly fatter sound although yes I would expect that considering the price difference.
When I'm looking away and just listening for awhile, I can't hear the difference. It's when I look at the transition between Gibson and Epiphone that I hear a very subtle difference. I think just knowing it's a more expensive guitar makes it sound better mentally. If a well known jazz guitarists like George Benson was playing the Epiphone on an album, I wouldn't even know. It would sound like an expensive guitar to me. The Chinese Epiphones are getting so close now anyways with the "inspired by Gibson" series. Throw some Gibson pickups or even some boutique handwound p90s in the Epiphone and it will sound as good as the Gibson to your ears. And it will still cost less.
Would be nice to hear about the differences in feel, build quality, etc. The pickups can easily be swapped or remedied with EQ, so they don’t really matter to me. Nice playing though!
I want to love the Gibson more, but from the sound clips you have here, the Epiphone has much more clarity and the Gibson seems so much muddier. I bought a Harley Benton SC-450 P90 GT guitar from Germany a little while back to see if I would like P90's. I know it's not in the price class by any means, but It is just killer. I can't put it down. I don't see how a Gibson could sound better, but I still want one. 😂 Thank you for this video, it really shows the differences you can have per model.

Excuse me if I am critical. I hope this will help you to become very successful in the future on your channel. I am trying to make a decision right now whether to buy Gibson P90 pickups or Epiphone P90's to put in my guitar. To tell you the truth this video doesn't help you very much. Why? 1) You keep playing with the volume knobs which means you are skewing the volume for each pickup. I don't think you are doing this maliciously, you just don't realize for us who are trying hard to do accurate A-B comparisons it makes it impossible to make an accurate decision. Please turn the volumes on the guitars, and the tone knobs all the way to 10 and leave them there. 2) You should do short clips of playing the EXACT SAME RIFFS on each guitar so once again we can compare accurately. When you play different riffs on different parts of the necks, once again it is impossible to make an accurate assessment. If you want to emulate a channel that does things right check out Darrell Braun Guitar. Follow and learn what he does and you too can have three quarters of a million subscribers, make tons of money, and have top name guitars sending you free gear. This is not meant to chastise you, but rather to raise you up to a whole new level. Your camera, and audio capture is top notch. Sometimes love comes with a pat on the back, and sometimes with a kick in the butt. I hope this helps, and not hinders. Elon Musk has come to fully realize that the secret to success if failure. When asked how his new rocket design, the one he just built is going to do, he replies, "Oh, it will fail." Say what? Yup, he knows that when it does fail, he will see why it failed, and fix it on the next one. The next one may fail also, then finally he develops, learning from his failures, the ultimate rocket that works every time. I wish you fame and fortune. God bless you.
Thanks, Bob! I'm comparing the entire guitars here, not the pick-ups only... In the second part of the video I do play the same (more or less - not note for note...) without touching the volume and tone knobs (I think). How a pick up reacts to changes to the volume and tone knob is also interesting I think anyways... Thanks for your feedback and kind message! Cheers! 🙌

Cheers! 🙌
Usually, I have a hard time telling the difference, but the Gibson is a much fuller sound with less muddiness in this comparo
Epiphone sounds great for sub 1k though
@@drgnslyr221 I agree! Cheers!
The overall sound, I think the Gibson is superior. Mind you for the cost difference you would want and expect that to be the case.
Though I do like cosmetically the felt between the strap pegs and the body, a nice little extra touch.
I do agree! Cheers!
The Gibson isn't superior over Epiphone not one bit
@@thepatriot4355 „superior“ is obviously a subjective term...
@@PhilipCzarnecki well you used the word superior and I know especially the 2021 Customs Moderns and prophecy Models compete with any Gibson head to head I have a Epiphone les Paul Custom Koa has a Koa Cap and its high end same with my 2021 Epiphone Modern Figured Sg it's also high end and has a 3/4 Maple Cap

Many may disagree, If you're content to believe that, then please do.
Far be it from me to say to you otherwise.
I am just not sure why you felt you had to challenge my comment. As I stated (The overall sound, I think the Gibson is superior). Not, (I definitely think the Gibson is superior).
Unless maybe you are not so sure as you think you are?
If you like more Epiphone that is wonderful and you enjoy it.
All the best to you.
nice groove....reminds me of Frampton...
Thanks! Not really familiar with him though...

also a Les Paul player...
@@nicestrat I‘ll check him out!
How do they compare on build quality, is there a big difference?
How will the Epi sound with the Gibson P90’s? 😀
Honestly, I don‘t see a difference!
Good thought! Great, I‘d think!
What is a fair price now for the Epiphone?
I sold it already… in case you ask for that…
@@PhilipCzarnecki there is one for sale here locally - wondering if the price is fair - $420
What kind of scales should I focus on if I want to play like your intro jam?
I‘m using the myxolydian, lydian and dorian scale... I‘d focus on the major scale and all it‘s modes and also on arpeggios. I‘ll try to do videos about these things on my channel as well - so please keep asking!! Thanks
I would have prefered some simple riffing. Unless you play leads all the time this comparison dosn’t do much. Nice playing though.
If you put 10's on the epiphone it may sound the same as the Gibson
Very likely... The pick ups do a difference as well I think...
@@PhilipCzarnecki yes, but in the mix without looking which guitar is playing it might be difficult to find the difference, but yes Gibson has more clarity!
¡Brillant! Así se testea una guitarra!
Gracias!! 🙏
The music "background" I way too loud. I can't hear the guitar enough
was the epiphone setup?
yes!
I have a 2009 epi 56 gold top but I converted it to a Deluxe ( Mini Humbuckers) because I jut don’t care for the looks of the soap bar P90 pickups. I also added Gibson Deluxe tuners, Tusq Nut and PIO Caps. I love the feel and shape of the neck compared to the epi standard as well as the weight (solid guitar) and clarity is achieved. I may go ahead and change the .022 caps to .047. I will also change the bridge and stop bar and the guitar will be excellent.
How can you tell? There's so much processing you could use a $25 strat copy up there and it would sound the same!
Yes! 🙄
U played the Epi better tho
maybe🤷♂️
Gibson
Yes!
The Epiphone looks and sounds better.
aahmmmhh
