I recently moved after 21 years in London zone one and probably without thinking I took photos all the time, some camera, some phone - it doesn’t matter. Only now that I’m no longer there (more in the suburbs, like you) do I realise how much my old stomping ground has changed over the years. I’m so happy you decided to make a video discussing this topic. A lot of people travel to NYC to take photos and when I ask them about their work from home they tend to minimize it because the energy isn’t the same as here. Sure, NYC has the vibe for streetphotography but there are certain neighborhoods photographers tend to photograph repeatedly meanwhile there are 5 boroughs (and yes, I’m including Staten Island even though I don’t like it for photography) to explore. As a local, born and raised in Brooklyn, I love seeing work from other parts of the city but rarely do people who photograph Brooklyn explore beyond the popular spots, specifically Williamsburg, Dumbo and Coney Island. Our relationship to a place is such an important exploration of our roots as well as documenting a place not everyone will have the chance to visit.
This is a great point. I live in Staten Island and don't shoot it as often as I shoot the city. I would love to see more work from other boroughs as well and not just the most photographed places. Josh I'm more inspired to shoot local by this great video.

@@frame-lines if you visit NY again, I’d recommend exploring other neighborhoods. Most photographers here are taking photos of the same places so I’d recommend walking downtown to uptown, starting by Bowling Green and ending Harlem. Also, if you’re unsure what side to walk through, I’d say walk along Broadway. You get to see most of the neighborhoods in Manhattan this way.
@@danicee I too was born and raised in Brooklyn. I return home for the subway and manhattan. I tend to Airbnb in Williamsburg but don’t work that neighborhood. I like downtown Brooklyn. Jay street. Borough hall. I start at Grand Army Plaza and head downtown. I don’t work the Brooklyn neighborhoods. Walking north on broadway is a great way to walk the streets. My favorite spot in the city is Union Square. I also love the 14th street subway station. It is great being able to look down on the platform or watch people one level up from the platform. Plus there is the Strand bookstore. I miss NYC. When I lived there I wasn’t interested in photography. I’d love to move back but it is too expensive for me to live there. Time moves on and so must I. Seattle doesn’t have the population density or diversity of NYC but here I am. I just have to work harder to find what I want here. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

I’ve made it a point to walk around my neighborhood and neighboring neighborhoods. It’s amazing how you can take the same route and always see something new.
I started a project locally and branched out during travels during Covid. Initially just shot around the city and my neighborhood, and as I started to travel again, I documented how other towns and cities responded to Covid. It was a great way to get out and walk.
I like how you put it because sometimes I regret not doing that because I thought they would look boring. When in reality the boring pics I could’ve taken would actually matter, as it’s part of history.
I just got my first ever photo zine printed a couple of days ago. The theme is exactly this, a collection of photos all within a short distance from my house in Brixton. It really helps to create a focus especially when you don’t have to travel far and can get interesting shots on your doorstep!
Great video Josh, i live right near where you were shooting the video, and watching this has opened my eyes again to the area , will have to make another short visit to them for my street photography

Great video, as always. Every day I take the train to the capital of my country, where I work, and then walk on foot about 15-20 minutes to my workplace, coffee in one hand, camera in the other. From early 2019 to late 2020 the city was rapidly changing as a tramway was being built from the train station up to the city center, conveniently right along my usual footpath. Of course I took photos of the process over the months. For me it was a good training for my photographic eye and of course documenting this once in a lifetime change, I would say. 10,20,30 years from now our children and grandchildren will ask us what the city looked like before and at least we‘ll have all our images to show them. The best thing is those images will be shown how I saw the city, through my eyes. On a side note, I have a friend that lives in the US and he only visits my country every few years. I posted my photos to IG and so he was able to see exactly how the city had changed over the time.
Enjoyable, entertaining video with some excellent photos. I don't live in such a vibrant area and it is enormously difficult to get enthused by my over familiar area; but you're right. You have to work at it. Oh and by the way Josh, I love you too man.
Love this video Josh! Resonates a lot with me. I'm from a small town originally, and just made a move to new york city 2 months ago. Before the move, I moved back at home with my family to save some money, in the town where I grew up, and never saw as interesting photographically, but when I was there I started walking around to see what I actually find, and actually ended up taking some of my favorite photos in that tiny town that I have so far since I've started shooting. There's definitely an importance to shooting our home town, and this made me think about a book or zine from my time there. Thanks for this one!

I like the idea of photographing your local surroundings and have been trying to do just that. This was a good video to push myself to keep doing that. I love the GFX cameras, don’t have one, but they are a great tool for photography. I have a little envy going on when ever I see someone with one but not in the cards for me. Thanks for the video, it’s making me think about how to slow down and find interest in my local surroundings.
Love this, I am a big enthusiast of shooting local. I find it much more interesting to tell the story of your local area than to travel around for capturing places we don’t have much of an actual connection with ourselves. As more of a nature/outdoor photographer, I find that it’s even less common to really dedicate to local shooting. A lot of what I see from successful landscape photographers, certainly here on RUclips, is trips around the world to shoot for a few days. It often makes for spectacular shots and good content, but there’s not much of a story to it and I do miss that. I hope more photographers choose projects locally and become ambassadors of their corner of the world!
This is the way! I mean you can travel all over the place right, but everywhere you go, there you are! Shooting locally is a great place to start a long form photo project too. You can always dip in and keep working on it, learning as you go.
Another encouraging and inspiring video Josh. I like the realism and honesty in your delivery too. We all face constraints and challenges but we can make something from those, particularly if we persist. Living in my Norfolk village constrains footfall (and variety) a bit here too. I get out on a bicycle with my camera most days and then just keep my eyes open for something worth capturing. You've inspired me to consider a train or bus to the coast as an alternative and perhaps create a project from that. Your book and its cover look very professional and appealing. You’ve certainly got me thinking…seems we share a local area and seeing all these places that I know so well and haven’t really photographed much has inspired me to get out there and walk rather than getting on the train into Waterloo
Totally agree! I moved back to Virginia after being away for 10 years, and I have a new appreciation for the land and people that I hope to capture with my photography. You know where you're from better than any outside photographer, even if they're more skilled than you! I feel like we're all taking part in a global project to document every locality in the world 🌍
I live in Los Angeles and was recently in Seoul for 1.5 years where I did street photography a ton. As soon as I came back to LA...nada. This video helped me think about LA in a new way and I'll try to shoot some today. I love my city so I'd love to put that feeling into my photos. Your new book looks fantastic and I can see your photos are getting up there with the biggies these days. I'll have to pick your book up when I get a little more settled. Cheers!

I have years worth of photos from my daily commute to and from work, and now I’m traveling to a new city every month as a personal project. Every place, no matter how boring it seems, has its own thing. Love your insight 👍
Thanks for the great video... I've always found that the best images I capture are in my daily life, those quick trips to the shops, or just nipping out with the dog. Its to that end that I've reduced my street photography kit down to something that just fits in my small bag. I found my larger cameras just started to get in the way of me enjoying the simple moments i see. So much so that it started to become a chore to plan a day out shooting. Keep up the great work 🥰
Great video. I like this philosophy and it’s nice to have the validation that it’s ok not to shoot the ‘big’ locations. I live in suburban Surrey and I’m pretty sure absolutely no-one else is taking photos of the same locations I am. I just do it for fun, but it’s exactly as you have said - my favourite photos are the ones 10 yards from my front door. This makes me want to lean in to the local photography more. Thanks!

Funny seeing my old stomping ground from a street photography POV. Wish I'd been into when I lived there! I keep starting projects but yet to stick to one, although I have got a ton of shots from walks to work. Think I'll revisit them and see if there's something to build on...
Love to see and hear this Josh. I've lived in the same south-west London area my whole life and do the same walk almost everday. Along the footpath, over to Ham House, into Richmond Park, through Richmond, over Richmond Lock and back to Twickenham. I've done it a million times and have countless pictures of the same Bridge's, Boats and Riverbanks from each season but I still find it theraputic and rewarding as a photographer. I don't miss covid of course - that would be weird - but lockdown life had a kind of tranquility to it that was soothing and something i still miss on occasion. It alllowed me to embrace photography as a hobby and to realise how lucky we are to have it as a hobby! Everything you need is right outside your door. Love it! Thanks mate.

its so easy to forget that your local area may get mundane to you, but to other people it's so interesting. I moved to australia from the UK a few years ago and I now find myself missing places in the UK that I used to think were boring. Also that bridge in Richmond is one of my favourite places around London that I've ever photographed. Thanks for sharing.
My photography improved a lot during covid. I went out and took photos of anything that caught my interest in my local walks just around where I live even blocks around, from mud and grass to well, just about everything.
Strongly agree. In addition to what you already said, I might add that one's hood is beneficial as a training ground. When it gets harder to “see” those images, as you've grown accustomed to your surroundings, you train your photographic vision and this is helpful when leaving your town, like going on holiday etc.

Good video, Josh. I've documented my hometown of Salisbury over the 10 years I have lived here in some way or other. I've done lots of little projects, mostly to keep things ticking over. Over the last year, I've focused on doing monthly zines, again to keep things moving along. My main interest, though, is the South Coast. I've documented it in various ways over the years, but have recently settled much more on using Kodak Ektar film and a Nikon F100/F5. I love travelling and exploring, but I am more interested in returning to places over time and building up a view on it. Well done for sticking to Fuji for a while, my kit is all over the place!
haha definitely dont congratulate me on sticking to Fuji, its only been like two months lol Love your dedicstion and comitment to these projects, I have so many half started ones that I never followed through

Ah, I give myself a month as some projects I am glad to finish in that time and others literally only take a few hours or a day (I call them flash projects), I did a day trip to London for one zine. I do longer-term work, but that just seems to sit on a hard drive...
Hi Josh, I agree with the comments totally. It's easy to get caught up with an exciting or exotic location but the way to better your photography is to find interesting compositions wherever you are. I live in the Detroit area but spent a lot of time in London during graduate school. The Thames in the southwest is beautiful, especially Richmond. Lucky man. And thanks for all you do to inspire us. This is basically my whole “photography life”. All but 3-4 photos on my instagram (770 in total since 2010) have been shot locally. I never go further than I can get on a bicycle and back within a day. Haven’t done it as a project, it’s just what I do. I like it though.
I live in the small town of Hinckley, Leicestershire. It can be so uninspiring at times, especially when I've walked the whole place a million times. However, im probably the only person documenting Hinckley and that is something I have to cherish and take advantage of. This is a brilliant video, Josh! Absolutely spot on 👍🏼
I live in a small town, downtown is boring for photos, but I realized that I dont walk really in some areas around the center, so I think there is always something to discover

It’s that old adage, not being able to see the wood for the trees. During covid, I really really struggled with my photography, I’m happiest in a sweaty mosh pit capturing gig goers in the moment. During the lockdowns, I did try to do ‘local’ stuff to fulfil the gap left be the absence of live music, but the flow just wasn’t there. You’ve got some great captures here and the editing is really on point. Great video with food for thought.
Wonderful, I agree. During the past 2-3 months I started to record a bit more locally. It really helps to practice and learn from somewhere that seems familiar, yet still explorable for interesting subjects.
I love the idea of shooting local. I've done it to an extent. I had an idea a while back of shooting in the alleys rather than the main streets in town. Kind of a look at what people have "out back" and views of the "front" from "the back". We'll see how it goes. Have a great week.
Totally agree. I moved to Sweden 10 years ago, and 6 years ago I moved to a small village. I began to shoot my area, and I have to say it is really nice. Moreover, I was back in my hometown last summer and this summer, after covid, and I took pictures that I didn't think were there. It's funny to have lived in a neighbourhood for several years and never have seen it as a stage. More often than we think the best things are few steps away.
Lovely video! I absolutely agree that by living in a big city it is difficult to focus on a single project. And this little parts in between are the most captivating for ourselves. I live in Oslo not the biggest capitol, but I love to shoot my local neighbourhoods! Cheers!
Love the color grading, looks like 60's postcards. I do that also, trying to shoot a frame where there is no typical 21 century stuff present, besides the clothes people are wearing. You look like you just stepped out of a Wes Anderson film, totally dig it. Great video and thanks for sharing.
I’ve been doing a local project on medium format B&W and building up the work - it’s going to take some time - but I don’t limit myself and have just sent a photobook of images from a West Coast US holiday that was shot on Ricoh GRiii entirely in colour. I work best in projects and until I can retire won’t have unending time - so for now it’s opportunity driven. Good video thanks!
I take the majority of my photos in and around the city in which I live and it's interesting to see how different the colour pallet is in my images, even though I use Fuji too. I live up north and I don't think I could find the blue/orange/red colours that are your signature look in my neck of the woods. I often find myself processing in black and white as it seems to suit the slightly grimy colour of the city's stone buildings. I'm enjoying your book tremendously and it's encouraged me to think more in terms of building a coherent approach.
I am following a lot of landscape photographers here on YT - not because I‘m into landscape myself, but because of their intentional approach. I try to apply this attitude to my urban scenes that are mostly on my way to work or back home. Usually I am spotting a location when commuting and return for just that one location when the conditions are perfect.
So I never subscribe but I believe that I will. Love the concept of focusing on the areas near where you live. I've needed to get out of a rut & I believe that you have just inspired me. Thank you!!!
I’m just the other side of Slough, so not far from you, I love shooting my local area. I only moved here a couple years ago, so I also find it’s an ideal way to get out and about and discover my new surroundings, my (little) project is to get round as much of Buckinghamshire as I can, and maybe do a book in the future. This was the first time I visited your RUclips channel. Why travel to the North Pole or the Himalayas to get good pictures when the hometown is still the best? A good topic, and you show fantastic images in your video! I've been photographing my hometown for two decades, and it feels like I've only scratched the surface. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Yes being a hobbyist with whole schedule revolving around family I find it good to steal time in the routine and photograph the local area. Definitely you can build a routine around it. 2020 when I started film photography going to the lab to drop the rolls has become a ritual and I never mail it even though I can. And that area is now on my repeat places to shoot
Stealing time is a good way to put it, I often find I only have an hour or two spare these days. I'd also never mail film TBH, although mainly due to fear of it going missing - Thanks for watching!
this hit a spot. Josh love this advice up to today i was thinking how I cant travel due to lack of fund atm but that's a different story. But how i believe my small town will always be changing and thats the dynamic of street photography. My project is town and so far has been awesome capturing the different moods from the rainy to the dry season even to holidays and events. kudos Josh and tanx for the great inspiration and advice

shooting locally is more difficult for all the reasons you mention, but 1) that makes it good training and shooting in a new place becomes much easier, and 2) your deeper relationship with the place can produce work that has more meaning and is therefore objectively better, even it takes more time
Enjoyed the video Josh. You make some very valid points. I have just started taking photographs in my local town. At first, I just couldn't see anything of particular interest, but having done it a bit more I know where and when the light and shadows are and I have found some good backdrops for shots. Even some of the derelict buildings are fascinating.
Yes it defintely takes a bit of time, and a lot of revisiitng the same spots but it can be very rewarding when it all comes together - Thanks so much for watching!
Its interesting in the car park at the back of Premier Inn on Bath Road London... I've taken loads of photographs around there, the planes fly so low there
Moving from a city (Bristol) to the countryside (Welsh Valleys) I've had to adapt. When there are few people on the streets aiming a camera their way feels more intrusive, so I find myself thinking in terms of scenes instead of moments. Tbh I find myself photographing walking in the surrounding hills these days more than people. I love the idea of documenting the valley over time and it becoming something tangible as a collection over the next decade.

Interesting video. I have recently retired from forty plus years of professional photography. Having no brief, deadlines and budgets to work to or any market place to shoot for had stopped me picking up a camera. That changed when I decided to shoot where I live just for myself using my original Fuji X100. I have just started but I may put the images I like online if I can decide where 🤔

Ah thanks so much - I find the APSC fuji files a little tricky but the GFX files really easy to edit. Havent ever used the Q3 but found the Q and Q2 files pretty nice too!

I’m working on some local projects, I guess that can mean geographically or personally, which I’m not sharing yet until it’s ready. Very very slow progress tho - always too tempting to go central when I have a free Sat / Sun.

i can't really comment on local photography projects, but i can comment on local photography. I believe taking photographs locally is just a practical way to improve one's photography skills. Because it is in the local area, you can access the place multiple times a day or week. You can observe changes that are taking place. You can experiment with new techniques again and again and again. Failure will be not be devastating because you can always come back the next day or the next or the next. And i supposed taking photographs of your local area makes you might make you appreciate your local community
Love the video I find it very inspirational. I try to photograph my area locally. I'll drive to specific spots that I think could make good photos. My biggest challenge though is safety. I live in south africa and crime is quite a thing here. Most people don't feel comfortable walking in the streets nevermind with a camera. I've done some photo walks, but I can never just focus on shooting and looking for spots. I find that going in groups is better and safer but it's not a regular thing then. I would love to just walk every weekend without worrying about my camera being stolen

A great topic. I love to travel but I have little ones to tend to so they tend to be my greatest subject. I find for local shooting it's all about finding the right hours for the right light and mundane things will appear in ways you did not see them before. I'm attracted to the GFX stuff because I love Fuji but never really liked Xtrans sensors for color grading (brilliant for film sims and video output though). Do you find the GFX output a bit easier to grade?
Yeah the GFX sensor is so much nicer than the xtrans - it was also the cheapest of my three Fuji cameras (used) the regular 50s has come down nicely in price at the moment and I don’t think it’s worth spending more on the sii
I feel like that with anything in life. If you think you'll find answers on the other side of the world... it might be necessary to go there to realise that what you were searching for was at your home all along.
Thank you for this video. Looks like I will be doing more local image seeking. I am not doing this voluntarily. This isn’t due to FOMO. My best images come from NYC. I live in Seattle. That is a long distance to travel. I typically go to downtown and walk around. Downtown Seattle is nowhere as rich in photo opportunities as NYC. When life gives you lemons make lemonade. I have an inner ear problem that affects my balance. The PT has written into my treatment plan to walk at least 20’ per day. I’m not going downtown every day to walk. The alternatives are the city park ~ a km away. There is also the main commercial street in my community. It too is about the same distance but is only two blocks long. The next community north is a 10’ walk and is twice the length as my area and more activities on the street. 20’ away is my favorite park and another commercial area larger than my own. Just walking to make my PT happy seems stupid to me. I don’t have music loaded on my iPhone. Yet. The solution is bring a camera with me and notice what presents itself to me. I love walking the streets of NYC. The streets bustle with people. Some of the people appear to be eccentric. Good photo opps. Seattle streets aren’t as active and the people seem more typical. Now I’ll have to search harder to find magic on the street. Now I’ll have to find what I haven’t been looking for closer to home.. Lemonade. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
In late 2019 I traded a fuji 50s for a 100, and that wasn’t a good move. The 50s is a great camera, and I think better suited for the resolution of the lenses. I also like better the color rendering. Congrats
I agree completely with you about photographing where you’re from and taking the time to build up and carve out that view. It’s also not as pressurised and you don’t get FOMO! Love the pace and tone of your videos Josh - and looking forward to getting your book 👍🏻📸
I think you learn a lot by photographing the same old boring hometown over and over again. Yes, it sucks sometimes - but IMO if you can make it work in your boring hometown, you can make it work everywhere. Also the photos of your hometown get better over time by themself. In 20 years you have a nice photographic documentation of your hometown. And when you look at them then, you don't see composition or leading lines, you see a time you probably wish back.
@@frame-lines damn the brand I am going for is Nikon and they have a Z lens 40mm f/2. Funny how the price from 35mm to 40mm in Nikon is huge but I don’t think f/1.8 vs f/2 is much of a difference.
Mindset has a lot to do with it, for example I consider my own locality pretty uninspiring, but the photos are there, I just have to find them. It could be at macro level or shooting from different angles etc, but yeah I agree that travelling abroad can be or is often less fulfilling as the senses are overwhelmed.
Your neighbourhood in SW London looks a decent area for street photography involving people. I live close to a small town out in the shires. Not only is there less happening but people are far more reticent about being photographed. I could make a project out of quirky small businesses and the buildings they occupy but I am not too motivated by that yet. A day out in Manchester or preferably London is far more appealing and motivating.
Ahhhh yes, FOMO is certainly a real thing in the social media space. Can be tricky to not get caught up in it from time to time. I find local vs travel photography a bit like cooking a steak. You can cook it with a blowtorch or a cast iron pan. Like you said in the video travel photography is a very rushed (torch like) activity where local is a low and slow method. The shitty metaphor I’m trying to make is the steak (photo) will taste (look) better the longer it takes and more care you give it. I’ll see myself out 🥩📷
I think there's a danger when travelling of only getting the photographs everybody else takes. I'm sure I'm not alone in going somewhere new for only a finite amount of time and realising that I'm just taking 'tourist photos'. so photographing one place over and over and over again--a place that you know well--allows you to go deeper and see things that are easily overlooked, not to mention being able to shoot places in numerous lights, numerous weathers
I can attest to the fact that sticking to One camera brand saves a lot of mental agility: lumix GH5s for video (on sticks or on a Gimbal), lumix G9 for proper photography or handheld video (lovely IBIS) and GX9 purely for street. . . . . .and then I saw that X-Pro 3 for a bargain price and now I have to suffer Fujifilm menus . . . . “I just formatted one memory card and now you want me to start all over again to get to the second memory card”? 🤦♂️
Yes i'd probably go the same way with Lumix if it wasnt for the X-Pro 3 which I really like for street - Agreed though, the menus arent great, lumix have the best out there I think.
@@frame-lines but there is just something special about the X-pro 3 that means I will be keeping it and yet I have no interest in any other Fujifilm cameras . . . . When I grow up I will probably go the S5 iiX route 🤷
Perfect walk around camera. The GFX. 😀 “street photography” is so overdone now and cliche. Just stick to your local area. How many people walking around XYZ big city or shadows of people walking around can we possibly see? Especially in high contrast black and white. 😅 I’ve done the same thing. Every weekend I go to the same temple. For a couple of years now. The monks think I’m nuts. It gets really frustrating walking the same small area a million times and usually nobody there. I used fuji but I let go of it. The files just have that typical digital look. I think that’s why some still prefer the XT1. I’ve since moved to Leica. Just 1 camera and 2 lenses. It’s so small and compact. I chose older lens designs and the photos look nice and organic? If I can use that term instead of the digital look of fuji. I also enjoy the manual process of a rangefinder better.
Ha yeah I see that for sure - that’s why I like the xpro , gives me that analog feel, it’s definitely amplified in leica systems though. Your long term temple project also sounds super interesting

I recently moved after 21 years in London zone one and probably without thinking I took photos all the time, some camera, some phone - it doesn’t matter. Only now that I’m no longer there (more in the suburbs, like you) do I realise how much my old stomping ground has changed over the years. I’m so happy you decided to make a video discussing this topic. A lot of people travel to NYC to take photos and when I ask them about their work from home they tend to minimize it because the energy isn’t the same as here. Sure, NYC has the vibe for streetphotography but there are certain neighborhoods photographers tend to photograph repeatedly meanwhile there are 5 boroughs (and yes, I’m including Staten Island even though I don’t like it for photography) to explore. As a local, born and raised in Brooklyn, I love seeing work from other parts of the city but rarely do people who photograph Brooklyn explore beyond the popular spots, specifically Williamsburg, Dumbo and Coney Island. Our relationship to a place is such an important exploration of our roots as well as documenting a place not everyone will have the chance to visit.
This is a great point. I live in Staten Island and don't shoot it as often as I shoot the city. I would love to see more work from other boroughs as well and not just the most photographed places. Josh I'm more inspired to shoot local by this great video.

@@frame-lines if you visit NY again, I’d recommend exploring other neighborhoods. Most photographers here are taking photos of the same places so I’d recommend walking downtown to uptown, starting by Bowling Green and ending Harlem. Also, if you’re unsure what side to walk through, I’d say walk along Broadway. You get to see most of the neighborhoods in Manhattan this way.
@@danicee I too was born and raised in Brooklyn. I return home for the subway and manhattan. I tend to Airbnb in Williamsburg but don’t work that neighborhood. I like downtown Brooklyn. Jay street. Borough hall. I start at Grand Army Plaza and head downtown. I don’t work the Brooklyn neighborhoods.
Walking north on broadway is a great way to walk the streets. My favorite spot in the city is Union Square. I also love the 14th street subway station. It is great being able to look down on the platform or watch people one level up from the platform. Plus there is the Strand bookstore.
I miss NYC. When I lived there I wasn’t interested in photography. I’d love to move back but it is too expensive for me to live there. Time moves on and so must I. Seattle doesn’t have the population density or diversity of NYC but here I am. I just have to work harder to find what I want here.

I started a project locally and branched out during travels during Covid. Initially just shot around the city and my neighborhood, and as I started to travel again, I documented how other towns and cities responded to Covid. It was a great way to get out and walk.
I like how you put it because sometimes I regret not doing that because I thought they would look boring. When in reality the boring pics I could’ve taken would actually matter, as it’s part of history.
I just got my first ever photo zine printed a couple of days ago. The theme is exactly this, a collection of photos all within a short distance from my house in Brixton. It really helps to create a focus especially when you don’t have to travel far and can get interesting shots on your doorstep!

Great video, as always. Every day I take the train to the capital of my country, where I work, and then walk on foot about 15-20 minutes to my workplace, coffee in one hand, camera in the other. From early 2019 to late 2020 the city was rapidly changing as a tramway was being built from the train station up to the city center, conveniently right along my usual footpath. Of course I took photos of the process over the months. For me it was a good training for my photographic eye and of course documenting this once in a lifetime change, I would say. 10,20,30 years from now our children and grandchildren will ask us what the city looked like before and at least we‘ll have all our images to show them. The best thing is those images will be shown how I saw the city, through my eyes.
On a side note, I have a friend that lives in the US and he only visits my country every few years. I posted my photos to IG and so he was able to see exactly how the city had changed over the time.
Enjoyable, entertaining video with some excellent photos. I don't live in such a vibrant area and it is enormously difficult to get enthused by my over familiar area; but you're right. You have to work at it. Oh and by the way Josh, I love you too man.

Love this video Josh! Resonates a lot with me. I'm from a small town originally, and just made a move to new york city 2 months ago. Before the move, I moved back at home with my family to save some money, in the town where I grew up, and never saw as interesting photographically, but when I was there I started walking around to see what I actually find, and actually ended up taking some of my favorite photos in that tiny town that I have so far since I've started shooting. There's definitely an importance to shooting our home town, and this made me think about a book or zine from my time there. Thanks for this one!

I like the idea of photographing your local surroundings and have been trying to do just that. This was a good video to push myself to keep doing that. I love the GFX cameras, don’t have one, but they are a great tool for photography. I have a little envy going on when ever I see someone with one but not in the cards for me. Thanks for the video, it’s making me think about how to slow down and find interest in my local surroundings.
Love this, I am a big enthusiast of shooting local. I find it much more interesting to tell the story of your local area than to travel around for capturing places we don’t have much of an actual connection with ourselves. As more of a nature/outdoor photographer, I find that it’s even less common to really dedicate to local shooting. A lot of what I see from successful landscape photographers, certainly here on RUclips, is trips around the world to shoot for a few days. It often makes for spectacular shots and good content, but there’s not much of a story to it and I do miss that. I hope more photographers choose projects locally and become ambassadors of their corner of the world!

This is the way! I mean you can travel all over the place right, but everywhere you go, there you are! Shooting locally is a great place to start a long form photo project too. You can always dip in and keep working on it, learning as you go.
Another encouraging and inspiring video Josh. I like the realism and honesty in your delivery too. We all face constraints and challenges but we can make something from those, particularly if we persist. Living in my Norfolk village constrains footfall (and variety) a bit here too. I get out on a bicycle with my camera most days and then just keep my eyes open for something worth capturing. You've inspired me to consider a train or bus to the coast as an alternative and perhaps create a project from that. Your book and its cover look very professional and appealing. Totally agree! I moved back to Virginia after being away for 10 years, and I have a new appreciation for the land and people that I hope to capture with my photography. I live in Los Angeles and was recently in Seoul for 1.5 years where I did street photography a ton. As soon as I came back to LA...nada. This video helped me think about LA in a new way and I'll try to shoot some today. I love my city so I'd love to put that feeling into my photos. Thanks for the great video... I've always found that the best images I capture are in my daily life, those quick trips to the shops, or just nipping out with the dog. Its to that end that I've reduced my street photography kit down to something that just fits in my small bag. I found my larger cameras just started to get in the way of me enjoying the simple moments i see. So much so that it started to become a chore to plan a day out shooting.

Great video. I like this philosophy and it’s nice to have the validation that it’s ok not to shoot the ‘big’ locations. I live in suburban Surrey and I’m pretty sure absolutely no-one else is taking photos of the same locations I am. I just do it for fun, but it’s exactly as you have said - my favourite photos are the ones 10 yards from my front door. This makes me want to lean in to the local photography more. Thanks!

Love to see and hear this Josh. I've lived in the same south-west London area my whole life and do the same walk almost everday. Along the footpath, over to Ham House, into Richmond Park, through Richmond, over Richmond Lock and back to Twickenham. I've done it a million times and have countless pictures of the same Bridge's, Boats and Riverbanks from each season but I still find it theraputic and rewarding as a photographer. I don't miss covid of course - that would be weird - but lockdown life had a kind of tranquility to it that was soothing and something i still miss on occasion. It alllowed me to embrace photography as a hobby and to realise how lucky we are to have it as a hobby! Everything you need is right outside your door. Love it! Thanks mate.

its so easy to forget that your local area may get mundane to you, but to other people it's so interesting. I moved to australia from the UK a few years ago and I now find myself missing places in the UK that I used to think were boring. My photography improved a lot during covid. I went out and took photos of anything that caught my interest in my local walks just around where I live even blocks around, from mud and grass to well, just about everything.
Strongly agree. In addition to what you already said, I might add that one's hood is beneficial as a training ground. When it gets harder to “see” those images, as you've grown accustomed to your surroundings, you train your photographic vision and this is helpful when leaving your town, like going on holiday etc.

Good video, Josh. I've documented my hometown of Salisbury over the 10 years I have lived here in some way or other. I've done lots of little projects, mostly to keep things ticking over. Over the last year, I've focused on doing monthly zines, again to keep things moving along. My main interest, though, is the South Coast. I've documented it in various ways over the years, but have recently settled much more on using Kodak Ektar film and a Nikon F100/F5. I love travelling and exploring, but I am more interested in returning to places over time and building up a view on it. Well done for sticking to Fuji for a while, my kit is all over the place!

I agree with the comments totally. It's easy to get caught up with an exciting or exotic location but the way to better your photography is to find interesting compositions wherever you are. I live in the Detroit area but spent a lot of time in London during graduate school. The Thames in the southwest is beautiful, especially Richmond. Lucky man. And thanks for all you do to inspire us.

This is basically my whole “photography life”. All but 3-4 photos on my instagram (770 in total since 2010) have been shot locally. I never go further than I can get on a bicycle and back within a day. Haven’t done it as a project, it’s just what I do. I like it though.

I live in the small town of Hinckley, Leicestershire. It can be so uninspiring at times, especially when I've walked the whole place a million times. However, im probably the only person documenting Hinckley and that is something I have to cherish and take advantage of. This is a brilliant video, Josh! Absolutely spot on 👍🏼

It’s that old adage, not being able to see the wood for the trees. During covid, I really really struggled with my photography, I’m happiest in a sweaty mosh pit capturing gig goers in the moment. During the lockdowns, I did try to do ‘local’ stuff to fulfil the gap left be the absence of live music, but the flow just wasn’t there. You’ve got some great captures here and the editing is really on point. Great video with food for thought.
Wonderful, I agree. During the past 2-3 months I started to record a bit more locally. It really helps to practice and learn from somewhere that seems familiar, yet still explorable for interesting subjects.

I love the idea of shooting local. I've done it to an extent. I had an idea a while back of shooting in the alleys rather than the main streets in town. Kind of a look at what people have "out back" and views of the "front" from "the back". We'll see how it goes. Have a great week.

Totally agree. I moved to Sweden 10 years ago, and 6 years ago I moved to a small village. I began to shoot my area, and I have to say it is really nice. Moreover, I was back in my hometown last summer and this summer, after covid, and I took pictures that I didn't think were there. It's funny to have lived in a neighbourhood for several years and never have seen it as a stage. More often than we think the best things are few steps away.

Love the color grading, looks like 60's postcards. I do that also, trying to shoot a frame where there is no typical 21 century stuff present, besides the clothes people are wearing.

I’ve been doing a local project on medium format B&W and building up the work - it’s going to take some time - but I don’t limit myself and have just sent a photobook of images from a West Coast US holiday that was shot on Ricoh GRiii entirely in colour. I work best in projects and until I can retire won’t have unending time - so for now it’s opportunity driven. Good video thanks!

I take the majority of my photos in and around the city in which I live and it's interesting to see how different the colour pallet is in my images, even though I use Fuji too. I live up north and I don't think I could find the blue/orange/red colours that are your signature look in my neck of the woods. I often find myself processing in black and white as it seems to suit the slightly grimy colour of the city's stone buildings. I'm enjoying your book tremendously and it's encouraged me to think more in terms of building a coherent approach.
I am following a lot of landscape photographers here on YT - not because I‘m into landscape myself, but because of their intentional approach. I try to apply this attitude to my urban scenes that are mostly on my way to work or back home. Usually I am spotting a location when commuting and return for just that one location when the conditions are perfect.
haha yeah I have done the same, or sometimes jumped off a train or bus early becuase something looks interesting to photograph..
So I never subscribe but I believe that I will. Love the concept of focusing on the areas near where you live. I've needed to get out of a rut & I believe that you have just inspired me. Thank you!!!
I’m just the other side of Slough, so not far from you, I love shooting my local area. I only moved here a couple years ago, so I also find it’s an ideal way to get out and about and discover my new surroundings, my (little) project is to get round as much of Buckinghamshire as I can, and maybe do a book in the future. Yes being a hobbyist with whole schedule revolving around family I find it good to steal time in the routine and photograph the local area. Definitely you can build a routine around it. 2020 when I started film photography going to the lab to drop the rolls has become a ritual and I never mail it even though I can. And that area is now on my repeat places to shoot
Stealing time is a good way to put it, I often find I only have an hour or two spare these days. I'd also never mail film TBH, although mainly due to fear of it going missing - Thanks for watching!

this hit a spot. Josh love this advice up to today i was thinking how I cant travel due to lack of fund atm but that's a different story. But how i believe my small town will always be changing and thats the dynamic of street photography. My project is town and so far has been awesome capturing the different moods from the rainy to the dry season even to holidays and events.

shooting locally is more difficult for all the reasons you mention, but 1) that makes it good training and shooting in a new place becomes much easier, and 2) your deeper relationship with the place can produce work that has more meaning and is therefore objectively better, even it takes more time

Enjoyed the video Josh. You make some very valid points. I have just started taking photographs in my local town. At first, I just couldn't see anything of particular interest, but having done it a bit more I know where and when the light and shadows are and I have found some good backdrops for shots. Even some of the derelict buildings are fascinating.

Its interesting in the car park at the back of Premier Inn on Bath Road London... I've taken loads of photographs around there, the planes fly so low there
Moving from a city (Bristol) to the countryside (Welsh Valleys) I've had to adapt. When there are few people on the streets aiming a camera their way feels more intrusive, so I find myself thinking in terms of scenes instead of moments. Tbh I find myself photographing walking in the surrounding hills these days more than people. I love the idea of documenting the valley over time and it becoming something tangible as a collection over the next decade.

Interesting video. I have recently retired from forty plus years of professional photography.
Having no brief, deadlines and budgets to work to or any market place to shoot for had stopped me picking up a camera. That changed when I decided to shoot where I live just for myself using my original Fuji X100. I have just started but I may put the images I like online if I can decide where 🤔

Ah thanks so much - I find the APSC fuji files a little tricky but the GFX files really easy to edit. Havent ever used the Q3 but found the Q and Q2 files pretty nice too!

I’m working on some local projects, I guess that can mean geographically or personally, which I’m not sharing yet until it’s ready. Very very slow progress tho - always too tempting to go central when I have a free Sat / Sun.
Firstly thanks so much for picking up a copy Adam, it means a lot. Also great to hear you're also working on something like this, the temptation of central can be quite strong sometimes but I am also like, how much time can I realistically spend doing the same thing at Oxford Circus right?
@@frame-lines exactly. I think I’m just going to go in on days when something interesting is going on. It is a lot of weekends tho (I’ve researched quite a bit), otherwise I guess local!
i can't really comment on local photography projects, but i can comment on local photography. I believe taking photographs locally is just a practical way to improve one's photography skills. Because it is in the local area, you can access the place multiple times a day or week. You can observe changes that are taking place. You can experiment with new techniques again and again and again. Failure will be not be devastating because you can always come back the next day or the next or the next. And i supposed taking photographs of your local area makes you might make you appreciate your local community
I've produced two books so far and am working on a third. Quite a number of the photos were taken locally 📷👍

Love the video I find it very inspirational. I try to photograph my area locally. I'll drive to specific spots that I think could make good photos. My biggest challenge though is safety. I live in south africa and crime is quite a thing here. Most people don't feel comfortable walking in the streets nevermind with a camera. I've done some photo walks, but I can never just focus on shooting and looking for spots. I find that going in groups is better and safer but it's not a regular thing then. I would love to just walk every weekend without worrying about my camera being stolen

I don’t use film simulations but we just made some presets that work quite well on Fuji JPEGs! Cheers

A great topic. I love to travel but I have little ones to tend to so they tend to be my greatest subject. I find for local shooting it's all about finding the right hours for the right light and mundane things will appear in ways you did not see them before.
I'm attracted to the GFX stuff because I love Fuji but never really liked Xtrans sensors for color grading (brilliant for film sims and video output though). Do you find the GFX output a bit easier to grade?
Yeah the GFX sensor is so much nicer than the xtrans - it was also the cheapest of my three Fuji cameras (used) the regular 50s has come down nicely in price at the moment and I don’t think it’s worth spending more on the sii

Looks like I will be doing more local image seeking. I am not doing this voluntarily. This isn’t due to FOMO. My best images come from NYC. I live in Seattle. That is a long distance to travel. I typically go to downtown and walk around. Downtown Seattle is nowhere as rich in photo opportunities as NYC. When life gives you lemons make lemonade.
I have an inner ear problem that affects my balance. The PT has written into my treatment plan to walk at least 20’ per day. I’m not going downtown every day to walk. The alternatives are the city park ~ a km away. There is also the main commercial street in my community. It too is about the same distance but is only two blocks long. The next community north is a 10’ walk and is twice the length as my area and more activities on the street. 20’ away is my favorite park and another commercial area larger than my own.
Just walking to make my PT happy seems stupid to me. I don’t have music loaded on my iPhone. Yet. The solution is bring a camera with me and notice what presents itself to me.
I love walking the streets of NYC. The streets bustle with people. Some of the people appear to be eccentric. Good photo opps. Seattle streets aren’t as active and the people seem more typical. Now I’ll have to search harder to find magic on the street. Now I’ll have to find what I haven’t been looking for closer to home.. Lemonade.

In late 2019 I traded a fuji 50s for a 100, and that wasn’t a good move. The 50s is a great camera, and I think better suited for the resolution of the lenses. I also like better the color rendering. Congrats
I agree completely with you about photographing where you’re from and taking the time to build up and carve out that view. It’s also not as pressurised and you don’t get FOMO! Love the pace and tone of your videos Josh - and looking forward to getting your book 👍🏻📸

I think you learn a lot by photographing the same old boring hometown over and over again. Yes, it sucks sometimes - but IMO if you can make it work in your boring hometown, you can make it work everywhere. Also the photos of your hometown get better over time by themself. In 20 years you have a nice photographic documentation of your hometown. And when you look at them then, you don't see composition or leading lines, you see a time you probably wish back.
What’s your preferred lens to use everyday for local photos? 35mm or 50mm?
40mm these days I’d say!! The lens on the GFX is 40mm equiv
@@frame-lines damn the brand I am going for is Nikon and they have a Z lens 40mm f/2. Funny how the price from 35mm to 40mm in Nikon is huge but I don’t think f/1.8 vs f/2 is much of a difference.
How are you finding Lightroom with Fuji files? Doing anything to avoid the Fuji worms?
No issues with the GFX files - the x trans ones are a bit trickier but happy with how I can get them looking now …
Mindset has a lot to do with it, for example I consider my own locality pretty uninspiring, but the photos are there, I just have to find them. It could be at macro level or shooting from different angles etc, but yeah I agree that travelling abroad can be or is often less fulfilling as the senses are overwhelmed.
Your neighbourhood in SW London looks a decent area for street photography involving people. I live close to a small town out in the shires. Not only is there less happening but people are far more reticent about being photographed. I could make a project out of quirky small businesses and the buildings they occupy but I am not too motivated by that yet. A day out in Manchester or preferably London is far more appealing and motivating.

Ahhhh yes, FOMO is certainly a real thing in the social media space. Can be tricky to not get caught up in it from time to time. I find local vs travel photography a bit like cooking a steak. You can cook it with a blowtorch or a cast iron pan. Like you said in the video travel photography is a very rushed (torch like) activity where local is a low and slow method. The shitty metaphor I’m trying to make is the steak (photo) will taste (look) better the longer it takes and more care you give it. I’ll see myself out 🥩📷

I think there's a danger when travelling of only getting the photographs everybody else takes. I'm sure I'm not alone in going somewhere new for only a finite amount of time and realising that I'm just taking 'tourist photos'. so photographing one place over and over and over again--a place that you know well--allows you to go deeper and see things that are easily overlooked, not to mention being able to shoot places in numerous lights, numerous weathers

I can attest to the fact that sticking to One camera brand saves a lot of mental agility: lumix GH5s for video (on sticks or on a Gimbal), lumix G9 for proper photography or handheld video (lovely IBIS) and GX9 purely for street. . . . . .and then I saw that X-Pro 3 for a bargain price and now I have to suffer Fujifilm menus . . . . “I just formatted one memory card and now you want me to start all over again to get to the second memory card”? 🤦♂️
Yes i'd probably go the same way with Lumix if it wasnt for the X-Pro 3 which I really like for street - Agreed though, the menus arent great, lumix have the best out there I think.
@@frame-lines but there is just something special about the X-pro 3 that means I will be keeping it and yet I have no interest in any other Fujifilm cameras . . . . When I grow up I will probably go the S5 iiX route 🤷
Perfect walk around camera. The GFX. 😀 “street photography” is so overdone now and cliche. Just stick to your local area. How many people walking around XYZ big city or shadows of people walking around can we possibly see? Especially in high contrast black and white. 😅
I’ve done the same thing. Every weekend I go to the same temple. For a couple of years now. The monks think I’m nuts. It gets really frustrating walking the same small area a million times and usually nobody there.
I used fuji but I let go of it. The files just have that typical digital look. I think that’s why some still prefer the XT1. I’ve since moved to Leica. Just 1 camera and 2 lenses. It’s so small and compact. I chose older lens designs and the photos look nice and organic? If I can use that term instead of the digital look of fuji. I also enjoy the manual process of a rangefinder better.
Ha yeah I see that for sure - that’s why I like the xpro , gives me that analog feel, it’s definitely amplified in leica systems though. Your long term temple project also sounds super interesting
