  • This video shows you how to extract a topo profile using the 3D analyst extension. Using ArcGIS you can then make a "blank" cross section (with a grid and the profile) and export it as a pdf.
Use the template provided here: www.download.ot...
To get XY data out of ArcGIS
The shapefile you created (e.g. "PG1.shp") will only have M and Z values in the attribute table.
You can either run the Export Feature Attribute to ASCII ( help.arcgis.com... ) which will export XYMZ.
Or run the Add XY Coordinates tool ( resources.arcgi... ) which will add the X and Y values to the attribute table. Then copy and paste.

I cannot thank you enough for such a wonderful and carefully thought out tutorial. I had been ripping my hairs out in frustration for a couple of years now, trying all sorts of tools developed by the GIS community, with random successes or failures (depending on the mood of ARCGIS!). Your solution is surprisingly elegant, and I wish I had found your video a long time ago, would have saved me a lot of trouble! I constantly need to create profile sections in 1:1 scale, and export them to autocad, so that further editing by my colleagues can take place. For the life of me, I cannot understand why ESRI hasn't created a tool that could do this in a simple and fast way... Thanks a million!

Still struggling to see how you created the cross section template? How do you create a blank graph area like that in arcgis?

Good video but I can't find information anywhere that lets me at least see the basemap or other layers when I'm using the interpolating line tool. I have a DEM but I want very fine scale cross sections and I can't see the locations of my cross sections from the DEM.Is there anyway to have both open at the same time?

    Dear SIGeologyOtago,
I have enabled 3D Analyst, have added the 3D analyst extension and have selected terrain in layer. Still, all the icons in the 3D Analysis toolbox (Create contours, Create steepest path, Create line of sight, etc.) are cold (not coloured). i.e. I can't select them.
What could be the reason for that?

    Dear SIGeologyOtago,
First of all, thanks for the video. It is very helpful for me.
I would have a question. How can I make a profile graph with this methode for an exact rout (like roads or rivers)?
The profile graph icon is too simple, i can not edit the graph the way i want to.
    Thanks in advance
    Beata

I cannot build the cross section when it happens to cut two DEMs raster datasets. Is there a way to do it?

    • @lukeeasterbrook8755
      @lukeeasterbrook8755 5 лет назад

I think I understand. Maybe combine the rasters into a mosaic, then run the tool on that.
