That was a cool officer. Maybe you could use a radiator or 2, possibly ac condensers to cool the oil down some before going back into the holding tank for the turbo supply, might help the turbos to survive the heat a touch longer.
As a previous comment said, you should lay the burn barrel horizontally to give a substantial increase in burn area. That'll really help this thing get going! Also, your air inlet may be blowing ash up through the turbines, thus creating the gray smoke. If you lay the barrel on it's side and change the air inlet such that it doesn't churn up ash, you might get a wickedly powerful and clean burn!
Needs a furnace brick or ceramic tile to deflect incoming O2, and the way it angled into the barrel will really stir up a cyclone. SIMPLE STARTING METHOD, you have a truck that puts out exhaust, USE IT. Pipe the truck exhaust into the TURBINE side, as a practical means of spooling up the turbo. Maybe too hot on the compressor, and the gasses are depleted of O2. Insulate the burn chamber, loosing an excessive amount of heat. May want to place a water tub under the tank, should it 'China Syndrome'.
Once the fire gets hot enough there should be less ash. The grey smoke was probably from the waste oil. He could also mount the turbo's a few feet away from the burn tank to help keep the heat down on the turbo's too.
And the RUclips algorithm kicks in...Just had a Bobby McBoost thumbnail pop up on my "may be interested in" list....seems these rigs can produce thrust. Love your infectious work ethic and general love of life.
Upgrades to do: Line inside of barrel with refractory bricks, will stop the inside metal of the barrel from burning away. Get a better oil pump, turbo need higher pressure oil to last longer. Also find some way of cooling the oil and try to have the least resistance possible for the turbos oil drain. Try to find some way of stoping chunks of wood from being eaten by the turbo, not really sure of a solution that would survive the conditions of the inside of the barrel but maybe you guys can think of something.
The best set up would be to make a concentric pipe-in-a-pipe which has lots of holes in it. That contains the firewood, and only part of the turbo's air is used to provide oxygen to the fire. The rest of it is used to cool the combustion chamber, and mix with the hot combustion gases so the air temperature at the inlet of the turbine is lower.

I use a carbonator from a soda dispenser on my home built turbo jet engine. has all brass parts, has good volume and way more pressure than you need. Have a second one to run the diesel injection at 150 psi.
Glad the cop was decently chill at least, and interested in what it was doing. If you had not put the oil in there it probably would have been less bad as far as smoke goes. Been seeing a few videos of these now and I kinda want to build one myself at some point. i'm thinking it would be cool as a sort of rocket mass heater. Whole thing would be encased in sand/concrete and have ductwork or water lines going through it or something to harvest the heat.
For the burn oil, why don't you plumb a line in with small hole/nozzle and inject it in then you can control the amount and when and make it a cleaner burn.
It's hard to get a cool cop anymore. I would like to thank him for being that way. As citizens we appreciate it when they just aren't totally out to get you.
Due to the large internal capacity you need more wood. It will carry its own if you stacked up the inside top to bottom with wood, no need for the oil. It would also turn into one massive glowing red tank. I think if I built my own with the same tank I would fabricate four turbos to all plumb the exhaust off the top in a fashion where they all line up with an internal spiral of air. Then plumb the intake side into the bottom in a fashion to create a spiral of air that aligns with the exhaust up top. I would also fabricate hard steel lines for the oil and add a water cooled intercooler nearby covered in ice to cool the oil before sending it through the pump and back to the turbos. Better yet, draw up the design and hand it to a titanium exhaust fab shop to create a functional piece of art all burnt blue and purple.
Use a oil only burn setup! I bet Chunks of wood probably whipped the turbo out. If you can spray oil in with a pressure washer syile spray, or fuel injector it will burn clean and be easy to shut off quickly. So far this thing is awesome!
That is one cool officer, doing his job with restraint and respect. Even showing some interest and knowledge of the principle, honestly I’m surprised he wasn’t more harsh about the amount of pollution you were making! 😳 That was definitely a dirty burn!
I was on the edge of my seat terrified that the oil smoke would burst into flames like run away diesels can do. Please consider that and make sure the oil, I'm assuming it's used, doesn't have any contamination like gas or diesel to name two. I'm a pyro and almost became an organ donor from pouring my own used oil on a bed of coals and fresh wood that basically insulated the coals and provided a lot of surface area for the thin coating of oil to vaporize and violently ignite. Anyways, subscribed.
Cop was chill... Until the district attorney gets a hold of his report and files something on behalf of the epa. It's not the last Hunter will be hearing about this.
You could burn off a lot of that smoke. You've basically made a wood gasifier. That would make the exhaust a lot cleaner and you could actually do something with it.
having built a couple of these, granted on a much smaller scale... your oil returning at such a high temperature means you don't have enough flow. Also, you need to introduce your air into the top of the tank and make it swirl in a cyclone action, you have too much fuel at once. adding a perforated tube on the fresh air injection acts as a check valve and helps the whole system work much better.
After reading some of the comments, I'm also going to add that you are more likely to have success in the vertical configuration. You don't need more surface area for burn, you need more and better air distribution. More surface area will cause it to continuously become more "rich" until it over smokes and snuffs itself again. If you really want to get technical with it, the ratio is about 5:1. 5 parts air to flames and 1 part air to the coals. My preferred method is to run one long pipe all the way to the bottom, weld a cap on the bottom of the pipe, then drill a series of holes along the pipe to distribute the incoming air. Make the holes point along the wall of the tank to create circulation, and do not drill any holes in the middle 1/3 of the pipe to provide a mixing area. It's hard to make a recommendation, but I use a 1/4" drill for a 3" pipe, and stick to the 5:1 ratio. 5 holes in the bottom 1/3 means 15 holes in the top 1/3 ect. It helps to also make the pipe easily removable so you can quick pull it, drill a couple more holes, slap it all together, and give it another go while the coals are still hot. Eventually it will take off and the turbo will self regulate. A few more tips: start with a small fire and get it going, then add more fuel. The lack of oxygen will prevent the wood from burning before its actually needed and it won't snuff out so easily. Add something that resembles a plumbing trap but with 2 ball valves so you can pour in waste oil or diesel fuel while it's still running and the liquid fuel will just puddle into the bottom. open top valve, fill pipe, close top valve and open bottom, in goes oil or fuel. Make sure you have some sort of bust disc built in, I've blown out the side of a 1" thick tank with a waste oil burner. If you get lucky enough to get a hot clean burner they can flash and bang pretty hard after adding more fuel and restarting.
The fact we are so worried about this new green deal and then you saying hold my beer is epic!!! Love all this redneck science stuff!!! Keep it up!!!! Once my hoodlums move out I'll be able to afford to do this type of awesomeness!!!!
Conventional fires generate a lot of stuff that shouldn't really be allowed to get through a turbine wheel. I've seen a lot of these on RUclips that die pretty quick because of all the stuff that gets blown through the exhaust end of the turbo. Dunno how someone would filter out all the stuff coming off the fire and leave behind just the hot gas, but that would be one of the things to extend lifespan. Temperature of fluids is another issue. Great project you got here, and more solidly built than a few others I've seen thus far. Awesome work.
Staggered plates with some holes inside the burn chamber before the final outlet going to the exhaust turbine on the turbo. Basically it's a labyrinth setup where gravity does most of the work keeping junk out. You don't want it restricted much as velocity shouldn't pick up too much until the gases go into the outlet pipe. To keep most chunks from getting too stirred up in the first place the incoming boost air entering the chamber should go through some kind of burner pipe or diffuser.
Haskel air over hydraulic pumps are made in California, I use them in our plant on lots od different equipment and they build 4000 psi pretty easy. Just a thought, Jeff from Pennsylvania
If the system is optimized enough and gets hot enough this can be a really clean way to burn stuff. It smokes a lot only because it is not getting hot enough.
PTO on the pickup & run a vain pump for the cooling oil. Majority of the smoke, I'm sure you know, came from the oil dropped into the tank so use a oil injection or just be patient getting the fire started it'll work...oh BTW have you heard of the new invention, they are calling it a comb... LMAO 🤣😜
Very cool. Have you considered a secondary burn on the exhaust? I'll bet there's a lot of unburnt goodness there. Less smoke, more flames....yes... More flames....
Definitely burning old oil isn't a good idea unless the fire is already extremely hot. Old oil, when burning already, burns hot and quite clear without a lot of smoke, but all that oil with little to no fire is a disaster. Hope you guys get it going really well with a lot less smoke. I would, if you were out in the middle of nowhere, use coal instead of oil. Coal, once burning burns even hotter, stays lit through hell and high water, and just makes for a better bed of coals to start from. Also, if done correctly, using coal and wood would create a lot less smoke and a crap ton more energy.
I'd say don't do the donuts... The star of the show is the burn-barrel, so concentrate on its operation - the donuts don't add anything, IMOO. Looking forward to seeing the big turbos in action!

I absolutely love it. The tree huggers are gonna have a big one lol L0 Al
LMAO 🤣😜
I see you used a leafblower and heavy oil, thats exactly what id suggested in the fail vid, glad it worked...
Bro the EPA is gonna be all over this 😂
I was waiting for this one soooo much, it felt like months😂.
please colab with colin furze someday
I can't turn away watching it burn, I feel like it is just going to explode so be careful and hit the like button people
JEEEZE if the Giant Tank, Two turbos, 2 Air freeging hoses, and bottles to of gas wasn't enough; he adds Nitrous to it the build 🤯
cool cop, he was chill.... if you want to smoke out the area go to the wizards house. Allan has space and few neighbors.
