I really agree to this approach of ‘de-owning’ vs minimalism because it better defines for me what I ‘need in my living space’. This is Thanksgiving weekend 2022 and I ‘DID NOT SHOP’ for more holiday things. Don’t need it. Don’t have space for it.
Years ago we had to have a storage locker and it took us 6 months to get everything out of it. We decided to not keep those items because it was costing over $100/month to maintain things we no longer were using! This wasn’t logical st all. It took most weekends to either sell, donate, discard the ‘stuff’. Not an enjoyable time and a very difficult lesson learned about purchases.
Now being a Senior and in this particular house 19 years, I started this year to again seriously examine what we need at this age (70s) and it’s been an amazing discovery and definition of what is important to me and my husband right now. More physical room-space! So as time moves forward, items have less value.
We are bombarded in our country with advertising and easy availability to get things we want. FAST! This is instant gratification!
But maintaining items for years is both expensive and time-consuming. So as aging occurs, Seniors have a tendency, in my opinion only, to live with more unused items than is necessary. So Becker’s term and yours to ‘de-own’ says to detach from the items but keep the good memories of that time. Move forward to a new life-focus!
    A great video!
    Regards, Pat in Colorado

I did that in the first lockdown, about 2 years ago, and it makes the World of a difference. I still have some problems with paper clutter, i an working on that. But having a home for everything is sooo great. I highly reccomend trying it out. It does sometimes take a couple of tryes until it really works, but it is totally worth it.

As someone who feels like I FINALLY conquered paper clutter...Dawn the minimal mom has good tips. We got an open box with hanging files and just drop stuff into a file as it comes in. The kids each have a tray for schoolwork. As they fill up, we go through it and get rid of what we don't need and file what we do.

Usually I’m not a fan of these new buzz words but de-owning made more sense the more I thought about it. Because it allows you to still love the items you let go of. I was faced with a collection this morning I did not want to “declutter” because I loved those items. De-owning sounds like a decision, rather than a throw away. I will use this moving forward with the tougher things and also when helping others. Thanks for bringing that term to light for me! Edited to add: The reason I’m choosing to de-own them even though I love them is the amount is too large. Disney tapes from my childhood. They take up too much room and we haven’t been able to get the vcr to work consistently for my kids so instead the cart of tapes just takes up room. - instead, I’m going to keep my two favorites and de-own the rest.

Im temporarily living with my mom (grateful) while my new home is being built. Builder says it will be done by June .Most of my things are in storage. Mom has a large home and its neat but she has 12 Christmas trees, hundreds of mugs, enough food to feed a small army, I cant open a drawer or closet w/o something falling out. Its so frustrating for me because I am a minimalist. It actually motivates me to give alot of my things in storage away that i don’t really need.I’m dreading having to go through her hoard after she’s gone-so unfair to do to your children. I will not leave a mess for my kids to have to deal with after I’m gone!

Kate - I love ❤️ your video on minimalism with the emphasis of deowning. I feel like minimalism to frugality is like diet to exercising.
Frugality and diet are the main constituents for being financial free and being in a right size body - but you add minimalism to frugality and exercise to diet and boom that’s the kismit combination. Minimalism won’t make us financial free on its own- but adding it to a frugal habit stacked lifestyle and it makes spending wisely so much easier. Kate I am an extreme minimalist due to people like Joshua Becker, Dawn from the Minimal Mom and Dana from a slob comes clean.- so there isn’t anything I can decluttering but the jan no spend savings challenge is my focus ❤️❤️

My deowning drama - I buy notebooks on sale - and I use 2-4 pages in the notebook then never use it again! And I mean the notebooks on sale for 17 cents just before school starts. Just can't seem to get rid of them. I have recently torn out the pages I wrote on and "pretend" its new. But I know its not a full notebook, lol. I start topical notebooks like books I've read - and only write about one book and then I'm done.

Buns is a star ⭐️. One of my biggest issues is my husband. For example my kitchen cabinets - my husband has a problem - he has an addiction to buying coffee mugs. We have so many they no longer fit in the space allotted. He got mad when I donated some in the past. I had to buy a storage box to put the overflow. My plan is to wait a few months until he has forgotten them and then I can donate them. I hate clutter and do my best to de-own things I’m not using. But the love of my life is the problem. I don’t want to de-own him so I have to work around him. 😀

Currently in the process of decluttering my English courses, notebooks, books, grammar books... as I find myself now when in doubt checking on the internet.
I came to Ireland to learn English in 2008, spent 6-month in an English school for foreign students and have kept since all notes, books, paper copies..., including prints from my courses. Every afternoon after classes, I would type my morning lessons to help me memorize things (and also because my handwriting can be difficult to read, even by myself sometimes) and print them. I would keep original notes + printed papers. Well 2022 is now more than the time to declutter them. I might just keep one grammar book because I really like it!
I also need to bring to the donation centre a box of "decluttered stuff", all in one box but still taking up space. I bought a few months ago a mitre saw and need a place to store it instead of my office desk as currently. So I need to free that space.

Great video! I’ve been in a major de-owning mode for about a year. I have sold many items on Facebook marketplace and donated tons to local homeless organization. My mission is to have less stuff and CLEAN flat surfaces. Think of how it feels when you walk into a hotel room. It’s clean & has clear surfaces. Less clutter means less stress and less guilt.

Ha, Ha, Ha, Kate. Found the notification last night 🌙. Time was what I call, 0 dark thirty. West coast. So I set my phone alarm to 3am, went to bed and slept through the alarm. I tried. I really did.

Ok. Up at 7am my time. Made coffee ☕️ and am starting to declutter an antique (no not me) side board in order to put my macrame cord and accessories in. I am one person who never uses the dining room. Turning it into my small business area. Oh God, what do I do with the table and chairs I never use. I guess it's bye, bye for that too.

Hi Kate, firstly I love your cat, he made me laugh today...I have a cat called Betsy, who also does what she wants, and totally gets away with it, as she is just too cute!! Secondly, thank you for this video today, it really resonated with me. I feel like my things are breeding, and no sooner do I clear one area, it fills up again. Both my kids live away from home now, but I still have so many of their things in the attic. My daughter is in rented accommodation and then moves abroad in the summer, and my son is at University, so neither have their own homes right now. There is sooooo much stuff in my attic, I just don't know where to start. My problem is, that I attach emotions and memories to each item, and I can remember when it was bought, and the memory it evokes when I look at it. If I get rid of it, somehow I think I will get rid of the memory too! Anyone else have this problem? xx

Betsy does what she wants! LOVE IT! And HECK yes I have that problem too often. This year though, I'm like what do I want, CLUTTER or peace...the heck with it. I'm getting rid of it. If I REALLY need to see it, I'll take a pic of it. I won't have to hold it to remember. What I'm really trying to do is get rid of everything that evokes ANY negativity or bad memory. PEACE!

How did I miss this one? So sensible - and you are a lot of fun with it, Kate (not to mention that adorable boy and the equally adorable Buns). How lovely that Joshua Becker stopped by! I've been watching his stuff for a while but you know how the YT algorithm is, I haven't seen it for a while. So I'm heading over to get this concept into my head, and encourage the algorithm to show me more of his stuff. I am subscribed already, after all!

I feel like my algorithm is messed up a bit right now. The last 2 videos did not get pushed out as usual...maybe because of algorithm or they suck?? BHAHAHA JK! So happy to see you as always Amanda!

Also, i think it was the Fly Lady who said "You can't clean clutter." I'm also keeping in mind your own wonderful comment recently that not every space demands to be filled. That's what I'm aiming for this year - some blank spaces. I'm overwhelmed thinking about where i'm going to start though....

New to your channel and binge listening while I am packing up things and have to put most things in the basement. I'm getting floors done in the living room, highway, foyer, and all three bedrooms. So as much as I can get out of those rooms has to happen in one room was used as a storage room because we don't have an outside storage building. So it's been quite the project. I have thrown a lot of stuff out and donated to a couple of different places. I'm running out of time to get everything moved because the flooring and the bedroom set is coming in quicker than they anticipated. So, I have to resist the urge to stop and go through things. I have decluttered a lot but I'm having to just throw things in boxes and take it to the basement and those will have to be gone through after all the work is done. I am determined not to bring anything back upstairs to put in the rooms that's just going to add more clutter. In the past, I have moved about every 10 years so it was a good time to go through things. But things really accumulate. And I have a scarcity mindset because I grew up with grandparents who made it to the Great depression and was taught that you never throw anything away because you never know when you or someone else is going to need it

Very timely video for me. I discovered I had a mouse in my kitchen towel/plasticware cupboard so everything came out and got washed. I was amazed at how many dish towels and scrubbers I have. Then there's the plasticware. Do I really need 8 ice cube trays? No!
