The nice thing for me is that the reader, unlike many others, avoids trying to use exaggerated accents and speech effects that can often be distracting to the listener. His voice is clear and very enjoyable to follow.
I do admire all those who volunteer to read for audio books. Unfortunately many for librivox are ear shattering or simply not very good. But this David Clarke is more than excellent. I love the stories and Mr. Clarke's voice and diction are enchanting. Thank you so much. These stories have saved my sanity during a difficult time. I dread when I shall come to the end. Cheers
I, too really admire people who choose to read for others. Problem is so many of them are totally unacceptable, horrible readers.i feel guilty complaining because I know they do it for nothing, but my goodness, it can completely ruin a book when you get bad readers. What a great joy when you get someone like David Clarke, beautiful voice and perfect diction! Thank you
I've only recently found your audio books. I enjoy them so much, they've become like an addiction. I refuse to listen to any books narrated by anyone but Mr. Clark. Thankyou. 😊
Oh! Thanks so much! Great voice, so rare on Librivox, even I do respect all the volunteers on Librivox, but , honestly, hard to listen to the most readers. This reading is perfect!
it's hard to believe the reader is a Librivox reader - he is soooo very good - i could just listen to him read for hours. (probably an actor :) (as we all know a lot of Librivox readers are really not "listenable" (sic) at all.)
alexa penn I think we can all agree that you shouldn't join the choir if you can't sing. I just haven't heard ANY good female readers from the US and I have listened to many audiobooks. If you know of a good audiobook performance by a woman, please let us know.

For those who complain about the quality of narration, I would suggest it might be useful to increase your reading and listening capacity. When I listen to audiobooks on RUclips, I always set the speed to 2. I follow along fine at this increased speed, sometimes even following along reading in the book itself. If you do this, the sped up voices all sound the same and the issue goes away. Try it, you might be surprised.
The Empty House is an interesting story in that ACD had to create something plausible to bring Holmes back from death...the story is hardly believable but, we want Holmes to live forever and gladly accept this wild adventure as gospel...
Who is David Clarke, the narrator? When I do a search all I'm bringing up is Sheriff David Clarke. Update, I believe I have found the reader, He seems to be from UK now living in Texas, a citizen volunteering his time, I am surmising
The best damn narrator in the whole damned world. DC’s other readings are every bit as good. He is the only one who does justice to ACD’s Sherlock Holmes. The only reader worthy of reading these timeless stories.
lol my favorite one was the girl who was riding a bike and everyday saw someone the same distance behind her on another bike. Sherlock should of asked her was this other guy 2 dimensional and always on the floor in full black when the sun was ahead of you?
Too many errors in pronunciation and inappropriate accent. A classic story from this era is ruined by incorrect delivery. You can’t deliver dialogue supposed to come from Sherlock Holmes with these errors.
The more I listen to this book, the more I see parallels to what Agatha Christie claimed was her detective. Question; what is the difference between plagiarism and Copyright infringement? Or is it just a different word for the same crime.
I revisualized it, as I did with the mobster character from Chicago done with a Southern accent;) I appreciate the efforts made to hear the stories as written, as screen adaptations vary, and character casting ioften strays from the original writings, and never is as good as one's own visualizations...
The nice thing for me is that the reader, unlike many others, avoids trying to use exaggerated accents and speech effects that can often be distracting to the listener. His voice is clear and very enjoyable to follow.
Six hours in and I'm still not tired of the narrator's voice. That's a rare thing. Thank you, Mr. Clarke. :)

Absolutely. The best.
+globalman Sherlock has been getting me through tough times as well.
Me too!
+globalman Then you can listen to Chesterton's The Wisdom of Father Brown, & The Innocence of Father Brown...
+James Hart ???? Not sure what you mean. Is that a title? or?
The narrator's voice and diction are enchanting !

Thank you for this upload. Love the stories and this narrator is awesome. Listened to the whole 11 or so hrs.
Really nice reading of this excellent book!
Thank you, I enjoyed this very much. Perfect narration.
A wonderful reader second only to the great Great Greg Wagland .
This Librivox reader is a real performer and by far the best. Most are American females with that throaty, nasally affectation; truly grating.
there are plenty of people who are just as bad - including men for pete's sake! and, yes, they are grating!
alexa penn I think we can all agree that you shouldn't join the choir if you can't sing. I just haven't heard ANY good female readers from the US and I have listened to many audiobooks. If you know of a good audiobook performance by a woman, please let us know.
Great narration thank you
I much prefer the english accent. I tried but cant get into stories with an American accent. This is very good.
Are you British? It's funny, I can't get into the stories with a strong English accent.
As G.B.Shaw once said that the Americans Have not spoken English for centuries.
