Kyle's right on. The stats don't mean anything at the end of the season if you come out with nothing to show for it. And they want to close this thing out the same way they've been doing it all year long. I can think back to the day they announced the trade, and back then my stomach dropped. Demar was leaving? And we were giving up Poeltl AND a first round pick? For a guy who was begging to be traded after a contentious year with his former team, and the one guy who defended him. If the reports were to be believed, they made it sound as though he was sitting out the season to spite them, injury or not, and I thought it would destroy the team culture they had been cultivating for years, so there was a lot of trepidation over how Kawhi would gel with the Raptors roster. I had concerns over whether he would actually play his best for a team and a city in a country he had zero desire being traded to in the first place. I'm seeing how wrong I was to have my doubts. The chemistry was slow to begin with, and with the load management keeping Kawhi out on back-to-backs, that consistent level of play and the rotation was slow to emerge, yet they kept finding ways to win. And ultimately, it's had the biggest payoff - Kawhi acknowledges that his lighter regular season schedule probably helped him to push harder in the playoffs, and preserved his body for the long run. There's a zen-like quality to this team that I haven't seen before. You can't rattle them, no matter how slim the odds are that they can recover and pull off the win. It can't just be attributed to Kawhi's nature, his calmness and quiet and assertiveness. They have added key pieces and veteran leaders in with some young superstars, and they are leveling each other off. Nobody gets too high or too low. Nobody shies away from a player just because they can't sink shots. Nobody takes it upon themselves to try and win the game unless called upon by Nick. They trust each other, they believe in one another, and they are maturing together as a unit. Normally in years past you could feel the tension building, with Casey on the sideline screaming bloody murder at the refs, and the Raptors taking unadvised shots under pressure. If they blew a lead, they used to scramble, they'd panic, they'd try to overcompensate, and then the entire scheme would fall apart. Are you seeing it this time around? Because I'm not. They are just one win away, and while emotions will be running high in Scotiabank, these guys will be in the zone, in what I assume will be their finest game of the year. Never too high, never too low. Just one win.
Very much agreed. My feelings on the day they announced the trade were similar to yours, with the added question of whether Kawhi would play for a rookie coach when it seemed he didn't want to play for Pop anymore, and wondering about whether DeMar could have actually taken the team further with a summer's worth of work and the absence of LeBron. Additionally, Nick Nurse was part of the existing Raptors system and therefore had to hold some degree of responsibility for their past failures. I don't think you were wrong to have doubts, it was a dangerous set of moves and outside circumstances, so credit to Masai for taking the chance and reaping the rewards today.
had to win because Durant wasn't there. Didn't have to see LBJ or Durant. Good job. Funny how this version of the Warriors is the WORST in history. After Kawhi leaves and the team sucks the next 5 years I'm pretty sure you won't be showing up or watching games like most of you #PaperFans
Young Kid asked a much better and simple question about being an icon all over Canada compared to Mark Swartz from ESPN who keeps drilling on Kawahi. How Kyle chuckled and said "Never asked that Before". Glad to hear Kyle explained in a kind hearted way. To all reporters, please take notes from this young kid! To Mark Swartz of ESPN: Kawahi is not the ONLY person of the Raptors TEAM. how bout Marc Gasol and his Defense to lock out other team's Bigs, or Serge I-Block-Ya (need I say more?), Pascal Siakam being the X-Factor, how bout how our Bench Players who Stepped up like Fred VanVleet and Norman Powell who provided the added Offensive Option when Danny Green got cold. And yes, Danny Green had been cold early in the Play Offs, and yes to Kyle who's matured to be a true leader. All these guys deserves so much credit.
With the way the members of the Raptures carry themselves and act, how can you not respect and root for them. A group of young men playing a team sport as a TEAM. RESPECT TO THE WHOLE TEAM AND ORGANIZATION AND THEIR LEADER-KING OF THE NORTH: KAWHI LEONARD.
I remember when Demar and Kyle were so giddy and excited during press conferences when they had the series lead against the Wizards last season, despite it being only the first round. They then proceeded to lose the lead and let the Wizards take two games, letting them hang around. The raptors advanced and put away the Wizards only to get infamously swept by Lebron in the next round. The team was still mentally weak and unprofessional with Demar as the alpha. This year, the emotional stability and stoic approach to the game is a big reason why this team has made it so far, and it's obvious to see where Kyle and everyone else adapted this outlook from. Kawhi truly leads by example and has transformed this franchise just by his very presence. I really wish he'll resign
Reading the comments, I can't believe I was part of a minority in thinking DeMar, Jakob and a pick for Kawhi and Green was a good trade for the Raptors. Did you guys forget how much of a monster Kawhi was?
