my dear older brother passed yesterday from Coronavirus, and all i wanna do is hear John Hurt and this kind of Blues...So glad you guys are carrying the torch. John Hurts music means so much....Benedict's percussion is so perfectly done....thank you for this beauty...
I never knew what the blues was till I was on my own, lonely and miserable. John's tunes helped me carry on through that lonesome valley, and it'll help you walk it too
...i'm crying 'cause it sure brings back the folk singin' blues-pickin' guitar playing of the old coffeehouses in The Village, Virginia Beach, Chicago's Old Town and San Francisco's North Beach where this style of music flourished.......it's ALL gone now....they took it away from us...but it still lives on in our blood.....
So here I am. Still wishing still dreaming still hoping that, wifey and I could be meet these guys. America’s deep music history. This is pure joy. 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
Met these folks at the Augusta Heritage gathering in WV. I had a Piedmont style class with her for a few days. Great memories. She was dedicated to teaching this style of music. Great to find she has a solid following on RUclips.
I started on a country blues kick a few months ago. I bought your CD's and book. I keep backsliding into my usual style of using a thumb pick and short-strummed chords. I really need to internalize Valerie's finger picking style! It sounds so perfect.
Oh wow that's excellent,i have only been introduced to your work as of this evening from Reddit.I love it though, blues is an addiction of mine! Anytime i feel stressed or down Mississippi John Hurt is a good form of medicine for me.I will definitely check out your work more, are you on Twitter?
I discovered this song on RUclips being performed by S. Grossman and C. Marsh a couple of weeks ago. Since then I've been checking out many different performances on RUclips, including originals by Rev. Robert Wilkins. There are a lot of good versions. But I keep coming back to your's. Maybe it's that Valerie's voice is so well suited for this song. Maybe it's Ben's percussion that makes it distinctive. And, of course, Valerie's fingerpicking is simply wonderful. It's all excellent. Thank you.
Absolutely love this. Wish ya'll would re-record this on a less windy day. Still awesome as is, and out of numerous versions of this song I've listened to, still my favorite even with the wind noise. Please keep doing what you're doing.
@@TheBiggusdee This was an impromptu video taken without any of the usual equipment. I think we're sharing more of an experience here as opposed to a sound. But thanks anyway for your thoughts.
@@PiedmontBluz Yes, lovely music, so relaxed. Just a pity about the wind noise. I'm a film-maker myself, and always try to carry a mic with a windshield.
@@TheBiggusdee This video was made on a.casual cross-country trip, before we had any idea that we'd ever perform publicly, so carrying any kind of equipment other than our instruments would have been farfetched. Even these days, we simply do what we do, occasionally capture what we can, and share it if the spirit moves us. We're not really trying to document ourselves. We leave those kinds of activities for those who consider playing music to be their career. Lol!
I heard Mississippi John Hurt a few years ago when I was in a very down place in my life. It impacted me so deeply, I took up the guitar just to learn how to play that sound and be a part of it. I've had more hope for the future since. You play these tunes so true to what I hear in them from those original recordings. I'm so glad I found you. And another vote for Massachusetts if you can make it up here. Please keep posting this videos if you can. Thanks!
John Hurt has influenced musicians all over the world. His music was my introduction to Country Blues. That was a long time ago, and he continues to inspire me even today. This particular song isn't one of his. That's No Way to Get Along is a Rev. Robert Wilkins song. He was another great Country Blues musician, and worth checking out. Thank you for your kind comment. We hope to play in Massachusetts one day soon!
Actually, Wilkins did "That's No Way to Get Along" first, and changed the lyrics to create "Prodigal Son" after becoming a minister. Bands like the Rolling Stones covered this and many other pieces created by the early Blues masters. I've always preferred the originals. Something about the Rock & Roll covers always sounded a bit off.
@@PiedmontBluz good info! I agree about the original recordings too. I do give the Stones and a few other bands in the 60s credit for working to bring the blues guys into the mainstream and getting their music in front of the world. There are several greats that would probably be buried in obscure history without some British kids in the 60s. Of course I am omitting Led Zeppelin who did them so dirty. Zeppelin owes Willie Dixon alone millions of dollars. The song sounds great and it’s so refreshing to hear someone doing traditional music correctly
it just doesn't get any better than that. That's the best version I've heard. I wish I could see her fret hand. There's one part I can't figure out what's she doing. She's the only one I've seen who plays it like her. She's awesome !
I agree with Richard.. I have found several versions.. and one done by Sarah Rogo. but Valerie there is not only your voice that is well suited.. its the tempo and the cadence you both put into the song. Have you ever thought about doing a " lesson" on how to play this.. Your way???? I think it would be greeted with a lot of positive response. .. I really want to hear more of you two.. Kudos to you two for keeping the old folk blues alive and well. Any chance we will see you on the west coast of canada some day???????
