  • Blessed Alan de La Roche was a Dominican friar and priest who lived during the 15th Century. He was an eminent theologian and was famous for his sermons. Blessed Alan was chosen by the our dearest Lord and the Blessed Mother to promote once again the prayerful recitation of the Most Holy Rosary after many if not most of the faithful had neglected to pray it for more than a century. It was most appropriate that a spiritual son of St. Dominic should be chosen for such a great work. Blessed Alan began his holy mission in 1460 after a special warning from Our Lord, Who wished to spur him on to preach the Holy Rosary. The Son of God and Son of Mary literally spoke to Blessed Alan from the Sacred Host during the Sacrifice of the Mass. Our Lord asked His chosen priest: How can you crucify Me again so soon? Blessed Alan responded: What did You say, Lord? Jesus answered: You crucified Me once before by your sins and I would willingly be crucified again rather than have My Father offended by the sins you used to commit. You are crucifying Me again now because you have all the learning and understanding that you need to preach My Mother's Rosary, and you are not doing so. This terrible reproach of our Lord aimed at Blessed Alan, caused the Dominican Friar to resolve solemnly to preach the Rosary unceasingly for the rest of his earthly life. Blessed Alan did not seek to change the Rosary. He did not add novelties to the prayer or increase the number of mysteries, nor did he seek to subtract prayers or shorten existing ones. He simply reintroduced the Holy Rosary to a people that had forgotten this very powerful prayer. But the liturgical revolution that radically changed the Holy Mass of the Latin Rite would become a revolution against simple piety that would eventually infect the Rosary. We were told by liturgical reformers that the Old Mass was lacking…that it needed to be updated and reformed…that it didn’t meet the needs of modern man. We are now told that the Traditional form of the Rosary was not as Christological…not as Christ-centered as it ought to be…that it required new mysteries that would enlighten and illuminate those stuck in the Middle Ages. And so, we are led to believe that the Holy Rosary, given by our Blessed Mother to St. Dominic was somehow defective and needed to be reformed and updated. What we need is not novelties but rather a man like Blessed Alan to preach the traditional form of the Rosary. For more please visit www.reginaproph... & remember to say 3 Hail Marys for the priest

During the religious persecution in Ireland ,when Priests were hunted down and killed ,and the people were deprived of Mass, the Rosary is what kept the Faith alive ,it was called The Dry Mass.

A Dry Mass is actually a different devotion, which involves saying the prayers of the Mass except for the offertory and Canon. Certainly, the Rosary was also crucial in maintaining the faith in times of persecution.

Actually the original Hail Mary was the second part only. Then the angelic salutation was added. The Holy Name of Jesus was also added some time later. So the Hail Mary actually changed over time to what it is now. These changes were ratified by Church Authorities whose authority Our Lady respects (which is why she always told visionaries to go to their priests or bishops (St Bernadette, Fatima, Juan Diego etc). So please don’t think the rosary just dropped down from heaven as is and that humans can’t be led by the Holy Spirit to help put these things together (the holy bible is a case in point) Even the beautiful decade prayer ‘Oh my Jesus’ was added after 1917.
And regarding historical proof of Mary even non-Christian historians of Jesus’ time acknowledge her in their ancient writings so claiming she didn’t exist is simply ridiculous. And pointless.

I thought the Luminous Mysteries were to bring out issues with today's problems:
    Baptism of Jesus
=> Some parents are not Baptizing their children. Something Grandparents demand it and parents do it to get them off their back..
    Wedding at Cana
=> Fidelity and the sacrament of marriage => divorce and remarrying is out of control. I get asked if I'm married. When I say I've been married for 27 years. I'm then asked, "To the to the same woman?"
    Proclaiming the Kingdom
=> Desire for Holiness. Maybe turn off the R rated movies and sitcoms, stop gambling and give to the poor, stop voting for pro-abortion candidates so long as they meet your needs, etc.
Also, stop comparing yourself to others and compare yourself to Jesus.
    Transfiguration
=> Spiritual Courage, which seems to be lacking. Politicians twisting the teaching of the Church to get votes or go with the crowd. Speaking out against abortion.
Institution of the Eucharist => The TRUE PRESENCE of Jesus in the Eucharist. Some are doubting. Including priests. Back in the 70's, the tabernacle was next to the door. I see people walk in front of the tabernacle and not even genuflect or bow.
I agree that it was defined by St. Pope John Paul II, but he prayed a lot over it. I love tradition, but these Mysteries are still praying the Bible and concentrating on Jesus through Mary. All Mary wants is to lead you to Jesus and His Truth.
I might be wrong, but I have turned my life around by praying the Rosary and the four Mysteries.

It's not the perfection of your action that God wants but the use of your God given "free will" to "act" in a manner that is pleasing to Him regardless of its imperfections. It's pleasing to God to see that you're willing to try over and over again until you get it right just to make it right for Him. Love is truly measured in your actions. "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you." So do it; keep asking God in humble prayers everyday and one day it will be given to you. Not only does reading the meditations prevent distraction while praying the Holy Rosary, but the meditations, in and of themselves, provide such a deep, rich and humbling account of the Life, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Our LORD and Savior.
Prior to being aware that meditations on the mysteries even existed, I merely recited the Rosary, often considering it a chore. Now I can hardly wait to pray the Rosary because the meditations make the mysteries come alive.
In the live chat of the Rosary that I follow on this platform, one of the prayer warriors types out the meditation for each mystery of the Rosary, for which I'm so grateful.

It's something I remembered to do again, how my mom taught us to recite the rosary. For example - "Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee, blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus (who was crucified for us) (whom thee gavest birth to) etc.
So, there right after "Jesus" insert the mystery being recited and finish with the rest of the Hail Mary, for all the mysteries.
It may seem longer, but your rosary will seem to be more fruitful because even how should I put it, quicker, because you'll know which mystery it is at every Hail Mary, even if you don't have a rosary in hand, at times.
You'll remember which mystery you're at, making praying the rosary so much more attentive, more fruitful.
      Thanks mom.

Adding the mysteries doesn't make sense in light of the rosary being "Mary's Psalter", i.e. a means of the laity to join the religious in praying the Psalms by praying 150 Hail Mary's. However, in meditating and imitating Christ through this devotion, I think the Luminous mysteries are beneficial. In the original devotion, we move from the joyful mysteries of Christ's birth and childhood and then immediately to his sorrowful mysteries of his death and resurrection. The luminous mysteries fill in the space that would be Christ's life. I don't see how this lessens a person's piety or detract from the original devotion by including these mysteries.

      @here_we_go_again2571 4 года назад +3

      Ned Lawrence,
      If I remember my church history correctly;
the early Christian church used to consider
Wednesday to be "Mary's Day". If I am not
mistaken, this is still true in the Eastern
      Orthodox churches.
If Wednesday is seen as the first day of the
"Marian Week") then saying the mysteries
in order from Wednesday makes sense for
      Wed, Thurs., Friday and Saturday.
      OR
YOU COULD DO AS THE FRANCISCANS
(see below) and then say the Glorious
      Mysteries on Sunday.
I am sure after the Crucifixion, on the
next day (Saturday), that Mary must
have been reflecting on the joys
of her life with Jesus. She may have
believed that he would resurrect as
well as, possibly, have some inclination
of the crown of eternal salvation given
to those who persevere in their faith.
We don't know, the scriptures are about
Jesus, not Mary. Church tradition is
what speaks of Mary's life after the
      Resurrection.
As I recall from this video (#1 of 3 links,
given below) the Franciscans say their 7
decade, "Joys of Mary" rosary on Saturday
[consisting of the mysteries of the:
      *Annunciation* ,
      *Visitation* ,
      *Nativity* ,
      *Presentation at the Temple* ,
*Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple* ,
      *the Resurrection* ,
      *the Assumption/Coronation of Mary*
      (treated as one combined event)
Of course, that would leave Monday
and Tuesday (more or less) "out of
      sync." ???
But there are other Marian devotions
      (e.g. "7 Sorrow's of Mary"- chaplet
and the "3 Hail Mary" - chaplet)

The Luminous Mysteries are a suggestion by Pope Saint John Paul II, who only ever meant to propose one more set of meditations on the life of Christ that he deemed were important for our times. Baptism, obedience, conversion, Christ's fulfilling of the Law and the prophets, and the Eucharist.
They are not traditionaly part of the Rosary, and as a Christian you have no obligation to pray them, but they are a beautiful and rich addition! There's no reason not to pray them. A lot of thought went into this suggestion by the Pope Saint.

I was a college freshman when I went to see Pope John Paul ll speak during his visit to Philadelphia back in 1980. I still remember his sermon on morality. I will say this concerning the Rosary. Popes are elected according to the Holy Spirit and whatever they decree on matters of faith is divine guidance from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity and is God Himself also. Therefore, if a change was made to the Rosary by the Pope, it was made under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Such was the case if the addition of the Luminous Mysteries. I see nothing wrong with such a change. With all due respect to Blessed Mother Mary, God is still allowed to will as He pleases.

    So here’s a thought:
St Dominic was given the rosary around 1208. During that time, the second [petition] half of the Ave Maria wasn’t implemented or even said.
The official form of the Ave Maria as we know it today, was given in the Roman Breviary in 1568.
All of that being said, even without the luminous mysteries, we are already saying a longer form of the rosary than was given to St Dominic, meaning, even now we aren’t saying exactly the way the Blessed Mother gave it.

The Church was given traditions, that were protected and upheld, and these changes in the Church had been prophecied about long before.
Fr. Hesse, and Lefebvre, explain very well about these changes, since Vatican 2, and they Changed the Mass, which had been codified that it can not be changed, not even by a Pope, which was written in the earlier Roman Missal.
The 15 decade Rosary is the one in which we were given, therefore we should obey our heavenly mother, and Pray the Rosary, her way. Otherwise we could be being deceived, we need to discern everything. and Satan seeks to destroy all things Holy and he often does so subtly, and could even make something unholy appear holy. But, the Rosary is not a catalog of everything Christ did and it's not suppose to be. It's not even supposed to be a catalog of every major highlight. Why? Because the structure is reflective of the 150 Psalms, hence "Mary's Psalter."
Otherwise, we might as well keep making more mysteries so we can cover everything that Christ did on His mission.
If the Rosary had 70 Mysteries or adjusted the Hail Mail count to 20 per decade instead of 10, would it still be the Rosary?
It certainly wouldn't be what Our Lady gave to St. Dominic. It certainly would be the just the 15 mysteries that Our Lady wants us to pray per the message of Fatima.
One cannot take a devotion and morph it into something that destroys it's intrinsic structure, symbolism, and chronological flow and call it the same thing. And one shouldn't come along and act like they are wiser than centuries of Pope, true Saints, and Our Lady herself, seeking to add more mysteries and thereby breaking the Psalter/structure of the devotion.

This devotion existed before St John Paul II instituted them. But to avoid confusion, and to avoid the boldness of thinking we know better than the Blessed Virgin, we should avoid calling these mysteries the rosary, and we should not let it replace the daily rosary - even on Thursday. It should only be used as an additional devotion if you wish.

In my opinion the luminous mysteries are a wonderful devotion alongside the traditional rosary😊 they are an important supplementary thing to contemplate! Baptism, preaching, marriage, deification ,and the institution of the eucharist!
I think it might just come to the interpretation of how the rosary works. Is it only effective if we contemplate the exact mysteries given by Our Lady? Or, is she also pleased by the same prayers, even done with Latin and singing, while contemplating mysteries she did not list? I mean, the eastern Catholics contemplate other mysteries and yet we call that rosary an acceptable form of prayer. Not inferior at all to the western version. You also have the carthusian rosary. You also have the relatively big tradition of adding an extra decade for the souls in purgatory.
By no means is this a license to replace the Holy Rosary with something new entirely. You have 15 mysteries given by Our Lady. A Holy and venerable tradition . Given to fight against the albigensians and other heresies. Now, tack on 5 more that were drawn mostly by a saint, asked to be done by a saint pope, which all fight against the modern heresies of today.
Honestly, If these 5 mysteries came out 100 years ago no trad would have a problem with them. It's just it's from a time when the Church at large does whacky things in general and it just seems safe to reject anything novel barring a serious miracle.

I think it’s wonderful that you do so much with your rosary. We like reading a short devotion before each decade, and often add in other prayers as you’ve done, such as a line from from a litany before each Hail Mary. We don’t do it this way every time, however, because there isn’t always time for more than a simple rosary.
As to what is / isn’t allowed, the rules for private and public devotions are different. Though there’s nothing wrong with praying the rosary in a wide variety of ways privately, it’s important to note that not all prayers are approved for public devotion.
As to your mention of adding the St. Michael prayer at the end of each decade and again at the end of the rosary, this practice actually goes way back as a simple way to honor St. Michael and invoke his powerful protection. My husband has been doing this with his own rosaries for a long time for that very purpose after finding the suggestion on a traditional Catholic website about spiritual warfare.

The new mysteries are not bad in themselves because they have the most sacred of all prayers and the holy mysteries are very good. If it had been added not to replace but as an extra devotion, like the litanies or chaplet of mercy, the holy wounds, the seven sorrows rosary, etc. it would probably have been okay. But to intermingle it with what had been given directly from heaven, and erupt the order of the rosary is almost an insult to the most holy Mother of God. Father gives an excellent presentation which I agree with whole-heartedly. St. John gives us a summary of the 15 mysteries in his Gospel, very first chapter: "He came unto his won (the Joyful Mysteries), His own received him not (the Sorrowful mysteries), but to all who did receive him, he gave power to become sons of God (the Glorious Mysteries. Not only that, but the number of fish counted at the end of St. John's gospel, 153, exactly corresponds with the number of Hail Marys in the 15 decade rosary. St. John may have been enlightened about the rosary to come, since he was given care of the most holy Mother of God.

I used to not pray the Luminous. I try now to pray them once or twice a week (and the full rosary daily). I try. I find them very helpful.
They seem very fitting for the attacks on marriage and the Eucharist, the need for us to be transfigured into Christ and the need to repent (3rd luminous) and to be reminded of our baptism and baptismal promises. There is great grace in meditating on them.
John Paul II said the rosary was his favorite prayer (see his Encyclical).
In any case it's OPTIONAL only. Nobody has to pray it -- that's John Paul II's own instruction on the new mysteries. No need to pray it nor to attack it.

I would respectfully propose a third way. I had trouble with saying the Luminous Mysteries in the daily pattern of the Rosary but they are very well-suited to Eucharistic adoration. If one says the Rosary in the traditional cycle and says one set of Mysteries each day, the traditional balance is perfect. If one says all three traditional Mysteries each day then the Luminous Mysteries can provide a further meditation during Holy Hour. The Luminous Mysteries are an addition and should not subtract, detract, re-order or disorder the original devotion. The Luminous Mysteries are a reverent way to prolong the devotion and not a distortion to compare with the vivisection of the Rosary proposed by Monsignor Bugnini. Some people love novelties for the sake of novelty and they were eager to rearrange and personalize even a holy devotion given to us by Our Lady for the nourishment, formation, perfecting in faith and salvation of souls. St. John Paul II did not suggest supplanting the traditional order, others rushed to do that. I would also point out the six (Brigittine) and seven decade (Franciscan Crown) rosaries used by many people for many centuries to offer more devotion (not less). These devotions are authentic and salutary.

The Word of God mysteries include:
      1: the Gospel is veiled (read 2 Corinthians 3:13-4:4 and John 6:48 & 56).
      2. Jesus is tempted with a perversion of scripture (read Matthew 4:5-7).
      3. Jesus Christ is the WORD OF GOD (read John 1:1-15, 8:12, 12:46 and 18:37).
      4. Christ’s Church is the authoritative source for interpreting scripture (read John 3:11 & 4:31-42).
      5. Jesus interprets the scripture for His Church (read Luke 24:13-35).
      The Incarnation mysteries include:
      1. God’s image;
      2. The Type of Incarnation;
      3. The Incarnation;
      4. Christ’s Human Nature;

Imagine thinking Jesus and Our Lady would be upset with us saying Hail Mary an additional 50 times and for us reflecting on His ministry.
These rad trads who border on sedevacantism are amongst some of the most bitter people I’ve ever seen.
This is coming from someone who prefers the TLM.
    Update:
I’m sorry for calling some of you sedevacantists, I realize those who call themselves traditional but have no problem removing the Tridentine Mass are not traditional Catholics.
I ordered a traditional 54 Day Rosary Novena “Little Blue Book” and am going to start saying the Rosary as it was given to us by Our Lady.
That is, the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries.
Please pray for my family and I, I want to take my family to the SSPX but my wife is barely returning to Mass and is resistant to the TLM as the Novus Ordo is all she’s known.

When the Luminous Mysteries were added, something didn't seem right, as they dealt with mysteries not directly related to Our Lady, except possibly the Wedding at Cana. Since they were optional, I just ignored them. I'm glad to see my spiritual insight has been confirmed. My only complaint is all the lovely Rosary prayer books have disappeared, or have been altered to include the Luminous Mysteries. It all seems so disruptive and disorderly for no specific purpose.

Back in college, I was praying the 3 mysteries and I felt that the Divine assistance has always been with me., things that sometimes would / could become awry would get resolved easily. I felt protected by God.
When I started praying the 4 mysteries, somehow, I did not feel the same protection that I had then. That even completing the praying of the 4 mysteries was a big struggle. Back then, I just assumed that the struggle is a sacrifice that I have to make.
Then one day, as i was out of time to pray the rosary before mass, I decided to pray only the 3 mysteries. Lo and behold, I felt happier, lighter and the struggle to pray the rosary disappeared.

This got me thinking. What if one prays all 4 mysteries? The psalter is prayed in one day so the whole rosary ( all 15 or 20 decades) should be prayed in one day. Will adding 50 more Hail Marys a day be bad? I’m sure it is not bad but it is not necessary for holiness as I’m sure the Blessed Mother knows exactly what is needed. If you only pray one mystery a day then use the traditional pattern: J/S/G and on Sunday, pray depending on the liturgical season. It becomes a problem when you pray the 54 day rosary novena, that’s when I don’t pray the Luminous mysteries because it throws it off. Now where it got me thinking, I don’t have to pray all 4 mysteries. I can just pray 3 because that’s what was requested by the Blessed Mother. Mother Mary, help!

  • @GaiaOne
    @GaiaOne Год назад +2

I don’t get it. Yes, the rosary is wonderful. But, how can honoring Jesus possibly be bad? I pray the rosary in the order of Jesus' life - Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, Glorious, in rotation. If the original rosary brings you closer to God, wonderful. If the Luminous Mysteries bring you closer to God, use them.
Really, I don't see the problem.
I love the Luminous Mysteries. Especially the wedding at Cana and institution of the Eucharist.
I agree that the Luminous Mysteries on Thursday is awkward. That's why I pray in the order of Jesus' life.
Not all change is bad. Nobody is twisting arms here. If you like the original, then use it. If the newer form works for you, use that. Whatever brings you closer to God, use it. I don’t think Our Lady would have a problem in exalting her Son with additional mysteries.

Adding the 4th destroys the 3 which is the faith of the Holy Trinity. Adding another 5 decades destroys the original 150 angelic psalters. Adding the last supper destroys the faith that the Holy Mass is the sorrowful mysteries the offering of the Purest Lamb Jesus on calvary. It supports the protestant theology that the mass is symbolism to the last supper.

I see no problem in adding the luminous mysteries to the traditional rosary. If you want to stick with the traditional then do so. The choice is yours. Also I think it is important to highlight that the Catholic Church is always evolving. It is likely that new prayers and devotions will be added in the centuries that follow through future saints in response to serious world issues that may arise. Time does not stand still. I feel fortunate to live in an era where I can go to mass and pray the rosary.

Spot On Father! There is absolutely no need to alter the Most Holy Rosary. It was given perfect from the Blessed Trinity to Our Lady, then from Her to St. Dominic. I refuse to believe that any addition or alteration improved the Rosary or added anything to it whatsoever. Ave Maria!

I see the Luminous Mysteries as the filling in the missing part of Our Lord life on earth in the Mysteries...meaning... We have the Joyful Mysteries (Incarnation and childhood life of Jesus), the Sorrowful Mysteries (Passion and death of our Lord), the Glorious Mysteries (Resurrection & Ascension of Our Lord), and now we have the Luminous Mysteries which is the revelation of the Lord through his teachings and ministry... So there it is, the complete mysteries of Our Lord. I personally think it would make more sense to pray Luminous after the Joyful but before the Sorrowful...

Na he's just the pope and a saint......wake up people...y r we rejecting the tradition of papal God given authority and yes....could it be the Hly Spirit???

At what point does prayer become wrong? This is very legalistic. I wonder if I'll listen to a homily next on how my mental prayer is incorrect. I do the Luminous Mysteries. It prays my heart's desires for my family, friends, and the world. Openness to the holy spirit, do whatever He tells you, repentance, trust, proclaiming the gospel, desire for holiness, becoming a new person in Christ, participation in mass and adoration!! Thank you JPII for giving me words to pray for those I'm responsible for!!

The Luminous Mysteries are perfect in the Rosary because the Traditional Rosary totally lacked the all important events of Jesus' ministry, which are extremely important parts of the life of Jesus Christ. To leave them out is to give an incomplete picture of Jesus' life, and in turn an incomplete meditation.
The whole thing about Paul with his Trinity of comments on Christ's life is irrelevant because Paul didn't know anything about the actual life of Jesus, just His death and Resurrection, which are the ONLY things he ever spoke about.Paul completely ignored all the important teachings Jesus gave us.
The objection to the Luminous Mysteries being on Thursday and being awkward is crazy. Traditionally, Our Lady wanted the ENTIRE Rosary prayed everyday. Praying only 1 set of Mysteries each day is an unfortunate innovation that takes away ALL the Blessings associated with the Rosary, because Our Lady wanted the ENTIRE ROSARY prayed everyday, and the Blessings are only for those who do so. So the addition of the Luminous Mysteries fits perfectly in during the course of the day, with the Sorrowful Mysteries being prayed during the 3:00 Holy Hour during which Jesus Himself told Saint Faustina that all believers should meditate on His Passion during this 3:00 Hour. So at 3:00 to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and then the Sorrowful Mysteries is the perfect devotion for this most Holy Hour.
You can pray the Joyful Mysteries upon rising in the morning after your morning prayers, the Luminous Mysteries around noon, the Sorrowful Mysteries during the 3:00 Holy Hour, and the Glorious Mysteries before bed. It makes the perfect rhythm of prayer/meditation throughout your day, and all your daily activities should be worked around these Rosary times, not the Rosary fit into your mundane activities.
And the 15 Promises of Our Lady for thise who pray the Rosary only apply to those who pray the WHOLE ROSARY everyday, which now includes the Luminous Mysteries.

So much history is being twisted/left out in this video, and there's plenty of unnecessary bias. The "OG" Hail Mary didn't have the second part (Holy Mary, Mother of God...) so how can you bag Archbishop Bugnini for wanting to return the Rosary closer to it's earlier form when "tradition" is apparently the gold standard?
Another thought... What about the 'Oh My Jesus' Fatima prayer? Our Blessed Mother requested that it be added to the Rosary. Our Lady gives us a perfect example of how appropriate it is to reform prayers of the Church according to the needs of our age (for the salvation of souls).
The Luminous Mysteries address the pertinent issues of our time.

I hate when ultra-traditionalist make a fuzz about literally the most insignificant detail. The luminous misteries are optional, if you don't want to pray them, then don't, it's ok, but don't be so obnoxious. Adding 5 optional misteries to the Rosary doesn't change it IN THE SLIGHLEST. You people really have a problem. Please stop, stop.

After listening to your talk and all arguments, the question of "what is wrong with the new luminous mysteries?" Is still unanswered. I like tradition, but there is a limit when people surpasses to the line of what is good and noble to a phariseeic attitude. Be careful brother, the talk, though informative, is adding more combustible to this divisory fire that is obviously consuming the Church slowly.

First check the initial history of the rosary. The form now was developed over the centuries. Second, the Luminous Mysteries is NOT a product of modernists. The mysteries were authored by Saint George Preca in the mid 1950's specifically at first for his community on Malta. Finally, the rosary is a DEVOTION and not dogma so you can pray it however you wish.

It does seem to fall into the realm of "scrupulosity", this down playing of the Luminous Mysteries. After all, the Fatima prayer was added as well as different Holy Orders having differing forms of the Rosary. I do not think our Blessed Mother minds more ways to contemplate her Son's birth, Life and Passion. If the Rosary was never changed by adding to it, there might be a case for not adding the Luminous Mysteries. Besides, it is what's in your heart that matters and your disposition of humility, not repeating word for word . That could be empty recitation.
In group Rosary Prayers (i.e. before mass) some say it so fast, I wonder how they can be even thinking about anything.
I also wonder why this set of mysteries is so repugnant to some? Because they genuinely don't think they should be said or because they come from a Vatican II Pope. I myself do not believe in Vatican II or it's resulting changes, they have brought nothing but harm to our Church. However, these popes are not rotten through and through. John XXIII, Paul XI, JP II, Benedict XVI have all contributed some very important things like Humanae Vitae and in JP IIs case more awareness of Divine Mercy and more devotion to our Blessed Mother, Fatima and Guadalupe. His travels were like an awakening of Catholics everywhere. Their actions and words, unlike Francis, did not stem from pure evil. Francis has brought his anger, sullenous, unkindness, and simply meanness. I see nothing wrong with praying more mysteries of Christ's life and death.
    This pope

Thank you, Linda. I believe the Luminous Mysteries are important particularly in these times. The emphasis on the importance of Baptism, the value of traditional marriage, the necessity of familiarization with the words of Our Lord through holy scriptures, a desire to follow the example of Jesus so that we may imitate Him and acclamation that Jesus is truly present in the Holy Eucharist are all components of the Mysteries of Light. I believe most Catholics would agree Pope Saint John Paul II had unquestionable devotion to Our Lady, that Our Lady protected him during his pontificate, and she was his inspiration. We, as Catholics need every spiritual weapon at our disposal, to fight the battle before us.

  • @AndyYoung789

Well, John Paul II sat on the Chair of Peter and is a canonized saint with higher authority than a religious - even if he was canonized. Then there is the matter that the classic rosary ends at the Temple when Jesus was only 12 years old...and picks up again just before his crucifixion. Thus Our Lord's 3 years of teaching and ministry is missing entirely, so a strong case could be made for including the luminous mysteries. It's an interesting point about Peter catching the 153 fish paralleling the number of Hail Mary's in the traditional rosary. However, strictly speaking, that isn't normative because rarely does anyone pray all 3 mysteries together. Rules are made for general practices, not rare exceptions as Father Gregory Pines points out.

    1) The Baptism of Jesus: The rise of "I'm spiritual, but not religious" is reason enough to meditate on this.
    2) The Wedding at Cana: Divorce, cohabitation, gay "marriage," and all other forms of mockery for the sacrament of matrimony show this might be important too.
    3) The Proclamation of the Kingdom: How often have we heard that someone's catechesis was sub par? Sounds like this one is very valid as well.
    4) The Transfiguration: "Jesus was just a good teacher or a prophet, but He wasn't God." Nuff said.
    5) The Institution of the Eucharist: We've all seen the polls on what Catholics actually think the Eucharist is, and it's not pretty.
Yeah, looks like Pope St John Paul II knew that we would need these mysteries for our times.

We needed 10 years of 'Theology of the Body' homilies and papal
publications to reinforce our understanding of the theological
foundation of marriage, but that doesn't seem to have helped our current
pope and his German advisors much. Nor (so-called) Catholics.

When St. Dominic got the Rosary, it was not how we say it today. The Albigensians were the ones that attacked Church teaching and the Rosary was to counter their attacks. Today Baptisms are way down. So are weddings - and gay weddings are up. And why do we need to be reminded that we need to share the Faith? CCC 1816 says sharing the Gospel is necessary for salvation. And does everyone need to be transfigured into Christ? Of course! And the Institution of the Eucharist is needed as we have seen how 70% of Catholics do not believe in the Real Presence. I pray all 20 mysteries every day

The rosary was given to us by the Blessed Mother having JP to add another mystery doesn’t conform to the 150 psalms and he’s basically kind of arrogant saying that the Blessed Mother presented some thing that wasn’t complete or lacking. I’m sorry, but I will not pray the luminous mysteries.

I don't know why folks get hung up on this. How about a novel idea... pray both luminous and traditional. Shocking. How horrid to say more than a rosary a day.
