    Yoooo, so glad you posted this! I’ve been cutting for a year now got 8 clients I cut in my home and I want to take it to the next level. I love cutting hair and it’s truly my passion and I want to take off with it...I fear since I don’t have a license that I won’t be respected if I choose to go in a shop and ask to work! I love it though and I know I’m only going to grow in the craft and get better because I study it, I eat it, and practice it! In your opinion should I try to work in a shop at least part time?

    • @KevvThaw
      @KevvThaw  5 лет назад +9

      Love it bro. Focusing on the everyday, and passion behind the craft will take you far. In my opinion I wouldn’t go into a shop until on the path towards getting a license or a solid plan to get on the path soo . Fines are hefty for unlicensed barbers. If you take that risk, be fully educated on the risk your taking. But I suggest taking care of those 8 clients giving them incentives to bring more, and grow natively until you go on the journey.

    Congrats on your channel, man. I graduated from Paul Mitchell in Maryland as a cosmetologist on Jan 5, 2019. I passed my written two weeks later and passed my practical the following week. You sound like you're trying to convince yourself why you shouldn't take your practical. Just do it. What's stopping you? There's gotta be another story we're not hearing. You have the passion, the skill, and the schooling, now get that lincense and become a licensed professional. Wishing you the best.

I finished at the end of October, I’m still waiting for mine so I can go and take it. It’s offered once a month. My message here was more so to focus on the craft, and think of a license more as a check point.

    In barber college rn. I feel if your gonna cut hair you should at least keep your sanitation on point. Getting a license is more about knowing how to be clean and safe from disease. Anybody can cut hair but sanitation and quality is how u separate yourself from the pretenders

    • @KevvThaw
      @KevvThaw  5 лет назад

      I’ve heard this position to. Anybody can be clean too. Regulations for your state are just a few google searches away lol. It’s a lot harder to learn how to fade than to memorize skin ailments. Lol

    • @deagle1720
      @deagle1720 5 лет назад

      But i think it's safe to say there are more self taught unlicensed barbers lacking proper sanitation than Barbers that hold a license. Going to school and really learning about what nasty things people can have on their head and hair (the science of it all) should make you more likely to be more sanitary than someone who is not as knowledgeable of the dangers of being unsanitary in this industry.

    Very insightful video, Kevv. Thanks for sharing your opinion, as well as those of your fellow barbers. Is there any part of you that wishes you were in a salon using more of the skills you learned is cosmetology school? I would assume a cosmo has the ability to charge/make more (based on the prices of those services) while actually servicing fewer clients. I always wondered if there’s room for a well rounded “barber” in a salon.

    • @KevvThaw
      @KevvThaw  5 лет назад

      I actually struggled with this idea for a while. I went into cosmetology school so that I could learn women's hair and apply that to men's hair. I wasn't interested in a salon. But as i saw more of the industry i questioned my intentions as if i kind of sold myself short. I came to the conclusion that I didn't. I want to work in a barbershop and do men's haircuts. The amount of money I make will strictly be contingent on the amount of value I bring, and I plan on bringing a lot, lol. So i'm not worried about that. You may get fewer clients but you stay with those few longer. There are multiple trade offs there. I'm happy where I am though.

You missed the point. the idea is don't let not having a license stop you from loving the craft, honing your skill. there may be circumstances that you're in right now, (being too young, being in college, not having enough money, etc) that hinder you from currently having a license. But don't let it stop you from honing the craft. it's a simple concept my guy.

      I’ve cut hair for 25 yrs without one. And let me tell you what. Alllllll you need is the infection disease course. You don’t need to go to barber school!! That’s a joke!! If your good at what you do and as far as I’m concerned have been certified in the infection disease control as I have been. Then what’s the problem???

    I had to do 1500hrs. Nothing wrong with cutting. But you should not be in a shop nor considered “professional” if you do not hold a license....period.

      @Third Eye Nation Actually no it is not....Not even close. The whole point of going to barber college is to acquire the knowledge base(in it's entirety) and to "become" and legally to operate and considered a "professional". The conversation nor topic has nothing to do with someone becoming successful. If you, as a barber, care about the profession......do it the right way. Cuttng hair in a shop with no license nor the planing to ascertain professional credentials you are just an armature. Personally, someone like that would get ran out of our shop. Why should you be subject to the same, walk in the door clientele, as the license barber. You are basically cutting into his/her income ratio.

      This is a lie. Getting a license has nothing to do with knowledge, and it doesn't make you professional. It makes you... licensed. Meaning the state ALLOWS you to work. This requirement was set in place so it could be regulated by the government. Pretending like it's anything more than that is ignorant at best.

      I’ve worked in shops for 25 yrs now. Never had a license and I’m a high end top paid barber . I work in NYC. I absolutely can’t stand people that conform to the government. Why the hell would it matter if a person can cut hair and does what they are suppose to that’s allllll I care about!!
