  • Welcome to Pastel Painting 101: In this lesson I will teach you how to Paint Amazing Pastel Landscapes in this EASY tutorial for new artists.
I believe this lesson is your gateway to mastering the beautiful art of pastel painting. Whether you're picking up pastels for the first time or looking to refine your skills, this video is crafted just for you.
We start with the basics, breaking down complex art principles into simple, easy-to-understand concepts. Learn about composition, how to use color effectively in a landscape, and why value is crucial in creating depth and impact in your artwork.
Next, I'll guide you through the foundational stage of creating an underpainting-a key technique in pastel art. This underpainting will not only enhance your final piece but also give you a solid base to build upon, ensuring your floral landscape comes to life with vibrancy and clarity.
As we develop the colorful floral landscape, I'll share numerous tips and tricks that I’ve gathered over the years. From layering colors to achieving texture, you’ll gain insights that will help you progress your skills swiftly and effectively.
So grab your pastels, and let’s create something beautiful together. You can do it, beginner artists! Let this be the first step towards your journey in becoming a confident and creative pastel artist.
I'm planning on making a Part 2 where I will share helpful pastel painting product information for new artists. It can feel like a vast sea of products when first getting started, so I hope to guide the beginner pastel artists to make choices that will be affordable and productive. Until that video is produced, you may want to check out these suggestions for new artists from my Amazon Shop.

Nice tutorial. I was most happy at the end of the video when you mentioned that you almost quit soft pastels because it was so frustrating. I learned that it is normal. I too "almost quit" (Almost decided to give my soft pastel set away). Thanks so much for mentioning that one will get better with lots of practice.

Wow. I really enjoyed this video.I’m painting along with you on this one. I followed the 3 rules of color values and depth of field theory. I like the magenta color.Of course I always tend to go a little crazy with the colors once I get started.haha. Thanks again and thank you for the tip on the 70 percent alcohol. I’m still working through some issues with where to put my neutrals and the extra dark pastels…I can’t identify the dark colors real well but I’m working on it.Thank you for your help. I’m not sure, I may be a patron, I got your email and I wanted to let you know that I am not very good with computers yet. I am however really enjoying your videos and learning a little at a time.Sometimes I thank the Lord for just a little knowledge at a time and other times I get somewhat frustrated. It’s like I learn something and then the next week or so I feel like I’m not progressing as much as I want. The main thing is I thank HIM for blessing me with joy and peace eternal life and a healthy passion for art. Thanks again and bye for now.

Thank you for sharing your amazing gift!!! I absolutely love your paintings!!! You’re so talented and everything turns out beautiful. I’m dying to work with pastels. From watching you I really wish I could handle soft pastels but the feel kinda makes my skin crawl 😢not sure how to over come that feeling. And in so silly because I spent an arm and a leg on my pastels. And barely have I used them. Do you ever use oil pastels ? I also have those and would love to see a video !!! God bless and thanks again for sharing your gift ❤

Thank you so much for your kind words! And you might try wearing gloves to paint with. That might do away with the sensation of touching them. Most people just use the medical plastic gloves. Perhaps that will work for you!

Yes, please do Part 2. I have not tried pastels. I worry about the dust they create. I watercolor and oil paint ( without OMS, only linseed oil for medium). I am wanting to try oil pastels, though. I think your instructions apply to oil pastels. Thank you for all your excellent videos with such clear explanations! Love it!

Thank you so much for that comment Sylvia. That’s a good point about the dust with soft pastels. I will try to include that in the video tutorial. I have some suggestions to keep the dust at a minimum.

I got the Blue Earth "Nomad" set, very good for landscapes, with both bright and desaturated colors!
