I love the era of dressing for dinner, dressing for guests, dressing to stay at home. I've always dressed up and looked presentable, even at home for myself. I use my fine china, sterling flatware, linen napkins, etc. It makes me feel good. Life is too short not to wear and use your good things❣️

Same here. I does make the difference, how we look and present to others and ourselves! I always behave different when I'm a bit dressed at home, or when I take my dog for a walk, not to mention any social event.

I was a child in the 60's and I used to sit on the train with my mother admiring the outfits of the young women dressed up to go to their office jobs, wearing suits, twin sets, heels, mini skirts and shift dresses like Twiggy. I also loved seeing the photos of my mum in the ball gowns that she wore in the 50's going to dance parties with Dad. I looked forward to growing up and dressing in such smart and elegant clothing. Then I grew up and it was the 70's. I went to my first ball and some other people wore flared jeans with their platform shoes. I definitely felt cheated by the shift towards casual dressing and not 'making an effort'. I had a nice maxi length flowy chiffon gown but it wasn't as glamorous in my eyes as my mother's satin Hollywood style gown which she had worn with satin gloves up to her elbows!

Wow I can only imagine what it must have been like to see these outfits in real time. At least you looked how you wanted to, glamorous and elegant but I understand your frustration after seeing the generation before you dress this way. Thank you so much for watching and sharing❤

I was going through old photos of my grandparents and both of them were wearing suits while taking my dad to the playground. Everyone made this effort back then and if you think about it, that really was not that long ago. Wow, have things changed. This year I plan to make more of an effort to dress up (not wear a suit) but in a modern way. I really like the direction fashion is going. The minimal The Row, Toteme, Celine, Phoebe Philo, etc is my vibe. Thank you for your analysis!

It was a different mindset: “Thank you-Please”. Having good manners was considered to be a dazzling social asset. Contrasted with today when people bark their coffee orders at the barista, rarely acknowledging his or her existence!

It is so refreshing to see the elegance of past times coming back into focus in the mainstream. Since Covid, people really have been embracing comfort, athleisure and dressing down as they're no longer dressing 'for the office'. Mina Le was recently talking about Corporate Core being a thing at the moment and wearing tailored clothing is such an easy way to look more elegant and grown-up in a post-covid era. I've a vast collection of 1950s/60s vintage dresses, suits and accessories (I was a pinup model a decade ago, and vintage trader) so it's very exciting to see the 50s and 60s elegance being highlighted again in the mainstream, as opposed to it being purely a subculture.

Mary, you are a true wordsmith 😍😍😍 I hope you know how absolutely brilliant all of your videos are 🙏🏼
This is a moment/trend I can really get behind lol!! Something about it is just so romantic to me, and I love to play around with this idea in my own wardrobe in the form of ladylike bags, mixed with my very minimal darker aesthetic outfits. This reminds me so much of my own grandmother and aunt, both of whom I swear I never once saw in “normal” clothes. There’s something actually oddly powerful and empowering about “dressing up” and I love how these incredible brands are taking on this concept with their own spin 🤎
(Btw I literally have been refreshing the Carven website impatiently waiting for their revamped debut 😍😍😍)
    Xx

Ahh thank you so much🙌 Truly I think this is something that almost anyone can do with their own existing closet and what we likely already have or borrowing from the previous generations of women in our lives. While it can be trend-driven/consumption driven it can also be slow fashion. Your family is such a treasure trove of inspiration🙏 Yes that's exactly it "dressing up" is empowering❤ Also yes, I'm so confused about the Carven website, before it was a green background now it's password only... Can't wait to see what's available. Thank you so much for watching❤

Hi Mary, anytime I see your new video, is in, I am oh boy, hold my wallet 😳😝🤪😂 i love that you bring that unique, more couture, not consumption conveyer videos. I already was kind of tired of Chanel cutesy, well don’t get me wrong, some of Karl’s time dresses, LBD, will never leave my closet, but overall I wanted something different. And you definitely gave me even bigger push, and here I am , proclaimed, only one brand bag , it’s Chanel queen, I just purchased vintage black leather Gucci mini Jackie O with silver hardware ( I never though that day will come 😳😝) I found absolutely not worn condition, and the price was a steal😜, and raiding my closet, and putting my quite a few Chanel RTW for sale. I wish I never bought quite a few Chanel RTW this year, I would definitely better spent that on PP or even old Celine PP.. Oh I love this swan style. Love scarves, hats…, sometimes I wish, that I would live somewhere more fashion forward. Love SF, but in this resort climate, it’s not much fashion going on. Even you go out Saturday night, to have dinner on the Ocean, ppl still wearing bikinis, or shorts 😳😱 so how much you can dress up🤪 Have a blessed day🙏❤️

Ahh I'm so sorry I don't want to promote too much oversumption but I also can't help when I see really great fashion🤣❤ Yes I definitely don't want my videos to come across as commercials lol! Same, tired of the cutesy as well, personally. The Gucci Jackie is gorgeous, congratulations!! Honestly, Chanel is so expensive these days, it's worthwhile to try another brand! Honestly looking at Jackie Kennedy for some spring/summer inspo - lots of lace and sheer materials. I could never wear a Bikini but love those classic Marilyn swimsuit moments. Thank you so much for sharing Giedre❤❤❤

Was really inspired by the video and I just like the direction your channel is going.
What surprised me the most was that it was from 5 months ago, and now we are in those autumn collections and you can just see that elegant, lady like vibe everywhere... even in mass production houses like Zara and Mango. Mango website even says "sixties revolution"

What an excellent interpretation of this trend! Swan…to me says , ‘perfection,’ and I like it! On another note, today, as promised, I went to Bergdorf’s and up to the fourth floor for the Phoebe Philo collection. It was a small alcove allotted for it, but light and open and not cramped. The staff were super kind and I was able to handle every garment and look them over well, checking finishes, linings, pockets, buttons….one negative…very cheap buttons….plastic on all shirts and blazers. Cuts were still big, and the sizes on display were ginormous! The long black trench with the big turtleneckish collar was gorgeous, and I was surprised to see that it was a denim or a twill…too heavy for me to wear…I am 5’2” and 104lb…and OH on the heaviness note; there was an ultra fuzzy coat, car coat length in both dusty pink and off white, that literally had to weigh at least 15 pounds. Totally serious and I even spoke about it to both an associate from Bergies, and a husband who was waiting on his wife to try on pants…the husband said why? And the salesman said they were coming out with a full length version that would be even heavier!
Finally, two items that i believe you had expressed interest in, first the big long collarless white smock shirt…it was there in all its crispness and in both of its appearances on the rack it was placed between a pant and a blazer of the same fabric, so my take on it was that they were to be worn as a suit…so I guess the shirt hanging out from under the blazer?? And the zippered pant…very cool….white denim ones…with a full zip up the back of each leg and even going through the back pockets splitting them in two….it was really a fun time, 🙂🙏🏼🌺⭐

Thank you so much for this report🙌 I hope you were able to find design inspiration from this visit AC❤ Ohh good to know about the buttons, I know the reverse collarless shirt I got the buttons were mother of pearl. Ohh I can imagine those mammoth furry coats looked ultra heavy. I definitely want another white collarless shirt, thank you for letting me know. Yes I noticed that Phoebe Philo was wearing in the recent New York times Interview the cropped jacket over the pin-stripe shirt, definitely not the typical way to style a shirt. Ohh so cool to know the zippered pants were there. Thank you again for sharing your experience❤ ❤ ❤

  • @Citrus1992m

I hadn’t heard of swan style but had been contemplating this idea of putting more effort into my style and getting inspiration from the past. It’s a tricky thing to balance and still look authentic-not costume-y or overdressed. I think elegance is at the essence of this style though, and without that, this look would just feel “off”.
Loved this video and the images!
As I develop my style and curate my wardrobe, I will definitely keep these icons in mind. ❤

    • @MarysRoom
      @MarysRoom  7 месяцев назад

Yes I think there is a fine line. Sometimes it's really about just looking at what is already in our closet, that special accessory or piece of clothing we don't wear as much and integrating it into our style. And if it doesn't work that's OK too, but knowing it is something that does take effort, and effort is part of the process. Thank you so much for watching❤

The bitter nasty thought erupting from my deepest self is… we can’t dress like trash forever. Just most of the clothing designs for at least 20 years have been trashy, with the culmination being the trash bag purse costing thousands. Money should actually buy something worth getting, I think. I’m so hoping this not just a one season flash trend.

It seems like, at this moment, there are two opposing strains playing out in fashion. One is the quiet luxury, the ladies who lunch which is elegant and classic.
The other is the ripped jeans, everything massively oversized, and often looks like the wearer bought it at Goodwill. (I believe this to be a variation on the ‘90s era flirtation with designer grunge.) Another strain of this one seems to be the nasty, vulgar kartrashian overly sexualized way of not dressing. All of these is a big “no” from me. As someone who grew up on a ranch in Texas, I find the ersatz rodeo wear just odd. Either wear the real thing or not at all.
